After seeing Steely Dan in concert at the U. of Toledo in April 1974, I discovered a promotional copy of their 1972 debut single, "Dallas" b/w "Sail the Waterway," in the listening library at Bowling Green State U. in the fall of 1974. I loved drummer Jim Hodder's easy-going lead vocal and "Skunk" Baxter's elegant pedal steel guitar, so when I learned that Poco covered "Dallas" on their 1975 album, "Head Over Heels," I bought it for that song alone. It was decades later before I learned that Steely Dan pulled their single off the market for fear that it would label them a country-rock band. By 1975, ABC/Dunhill Records realized that "Dallas" would fit newly-signed Poco like a glove. How right they were!

Saw an interview with Skunk today mentioning this song. What a fabulous effort. Jim Hodder was a great vocalist when he was given the chance and great pedal steel from Mr Baxter.

Apparently the singer on this track, Jim Hodder, drowned when he was middle aged. Truly a sad way to go 😔

It really does. It was the then drummer, Jim Hodder on vocals. He also sang Midnight Cruiser on Can't Buy a Thrill. And unfortunately he drowned at the age of 42.

Until today I always thought of this song as a POCO song, and after doing some research which brought me here to give this a listen. While I am a HUGE SD fan--and I love I.G.Y.--I have to say that to me this is still a POCO song. More Southern California Country Rock (think Eagles before there was an Eagles) than SD. Good that SD did record it, but I think I will give it a miss and not replace the POCO version on my playlist.

Yeah, but Fagan and Becker wrote it. I actually heard it first from Steely Dan.

My first familiarity with it was also via Poco, but I've seen the writing credit for years and wondered, well, when did Fagen and Becker DO this? And the answer: a single release pre-"Can't Buy a Thrill". It isn't very Dan-ish, but I really like it. AND Poco's version, as well.

They said it got dropped because it was sounding too country , they didn't want that to be there style.

Wow! Actually a good song, catchy and energetic but it doesn't have what we would call aSteely dan sound because of the vocals.I like it anyway!

The lead vocals are sung by drummer Jim Hodder, who sang lead on "Midnight Cruiser" on the first Steely Dan album.
