- The early Steely Dan song Dallas, from the plus fours EP, released in the UK only. The bass and drum tracks; isolated by AI separation experienced a reduction in the low end and increased treble respectively. Additionally, noise reduction was performed on each isolated track.
Just watched an interview with Skunk Baxter. He was asked about this song, he said Becker/Fagan thought it was too country, and since it was their debut album, didn't want to be considered a country band, hence they dropped it from Can't Buy a Thrill.
Just saw that. Great sounding tune. I had to hear the hole song. Reminds me of the 1970s, what a great time it was.
I think it’s a real shame Becker and Fagen didn’t care for this and Sail The Waterway, and left them off Can’t Buy A Thrill. They’re still part of SD’s history, and deserved to be as available as their other songs. I mean, I even think these are better than certain tracks that stayed on. And now, with a lot of their masters gone, it’s only these videoed that’ll keep them remembered.
even SD's bad songs are better then many bands hits
thankfully the +fours record exists alongside these videos.
Even the stuff that Becker and Fagen didn’t like is great.
Jimmy Hodder, great singer and drummer . During the Pretzel logic tour they had two drummers Jimmy and Jeff Porcaro who was like 18 or something. For a while they were a red hot touring band ....check out the bootlegs x
yeah, they thought it didn't measure up. But it's undeniably catchy. The "bye bye" refrain is yet another hook they dashed off and it keeps me coming back. That they would leave it on the cutting floor ... just adds to the lore
Why am i todays years old when I found this barely known Steely Dan song?
Fagan thought it would confuse new fans into thinking Steely Dan was a country band.
Actually pretty good quality! Thanks for this.
Poco's cover of this song is amazing
particularly Poco's live version from the last roundup without the studio strings
There’s a DES stereo mix of this song that’s quite good. Worth looking for.
thats quite a tease damnit.
Excellent!
It's great SD history but I see why it was left off.
Who is singing?
Jim Hodder, their drummer, just like in Midnight Cruiser from the first album.
Is Walter playing bass?
Walter played bass in the tour of 73 as they had Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter on guitar. Since they never lacked for great guitarists, he probably played a lot of the bass in the studio as well (early years).

I can see why Walter and Donald didn't care much for this one. It was like much of the other folksy stuff on the radio at the time, Mac Davis style " Me and You and a Dog Named Boo"; in a word, pedestrian.
Good, but not Becker and Fagan good.
Too harsh of a critique. This and Sail the waterway are first class country rock
"not Becker and Fagen good"?
They wrote them, and, at one time, obviously thought enough of them to release them as a single ahead of their debut LP, which fearures some cuts that sound not unlike these.
Reminds me of late 60s Steve Miller (like "Kow-Kow") but with Cat Stevens on vocals. Really cool song. Too bad they left it off the debut.
