- We messed around with ‘Were You Blind That Day’ a bit and gave our best effort at making it sound especially clean. Tell us what you think!
For those of you who don’t know, ‘Were You Blind That Day’ is a “Gaucho” outtake and precursor to ‘Third World Man’.
enjoy :)

I wonder how finished that “I can swear there’s no one there” line is. It’s so u usual but soooo cool. As is most steely Dan.
Very powerful line!
I prefer it to anything they did in the official Third World Man Version
@@kma5699 to be honest, me too.
There's s Rabbits playlist on Spotify as well
Fun fact: The instrumental track is the very same one used for Third World Man. After the whole Second Arrangement fiasco, Fagen/Becker had to scramble to find a replacement. The song in question here was an outtake from Aja and Fagen simply re-recorded the vocals. At the time, SD were attempting to sign with Warner Bros. but MCA said they needed one more album to complete their recording contract. SD wanted to go with Warner but lost that battle in court. MCA gave them a deadline that was very tight, hence the inclusion of Third World Man. It was far easier to just do vocals than a whole new song.
Hmmm... Larry Carton stated that this solo was played by him during The Royal Scam recordings (according to Wiki) Was Larry wrong?
Larry Carlton said it was from the Royal Scam sessions 🤷🏻♀️
Hmmm maybe it was. I just read somewhere it was Aja.
This mix is insane
I totally agree
Heaven xx
Sounds like a million bucks on headphones!
Steely Dan music never finishes to surprise me and to give me great emotions!😊
Carlton at his best. 💖
This channel is golden... It's so hard to find SD rarities, as opposed to, say, Beatles...
Appreciate your contribution.
That is exactly why we started this channel. You said it perfectly.
Very nice!! I prefer the lyrics to Third World Man but this is very, very cool to hear!! Very cool!!
@The Dan Vault … beautiful “remastering” effort. Sounds crystal clear…thanks for uploading! I really look forward to every clip you post.
This is a very valid question to the Self. 🙂
Wow! You cleaned this up so well! Fantastic! Thank you so much
This is beautiful. Terrific job!
Great Memories

Soudns incredible.
The Luciana Souza version is lovely
A wonderful surprise!
Superb!
Very strong vocals
insane mix bro - thanks a lot for your dedicated labour of love!
Our pleasure buddy !
This is an interesting insight into how Fagen and/or Becker wrote lyrics, it seems that they used word association and fit narratives around it.
This has some similar patterns to Third World Man lyrically ("throw down your disguise/we'll see behind those bright eyes..."I saw the fireworks" etc) but I think the overall story is completely different? If I interpret this right, this song is about an armed robber's remorse, and Third World Man is about a soldier fighting/had fought in a conflict, perhaps the Argentinian Dirty War.
This is interesting because it suggests that they weren't completely rigid on what songs were about/the lyrics, they shifted lines around to fit very different songs. As someone who is absolutely fascinated with how they came up with their lyrics this is a great insight.
I interpreted the lyrics to potray an indifferent, corrupt authority, turning a blind eye to all sorts of injustice and tragedy, and addressing said authority.
I love your insight!❤
That was AWESOME!!!!!
Very inspiring
Thanks for this, It's delightful!!!
Wow! Great work.
you killed it with this one, man

So very nice! Thank you 😊
I'm making a karaoke video for this song, so I transcribed the lyrics. In case someone pokes through the comments looking for lyrics:
Smokey Sunday
Ah, you look so unconcerned
While you watch that b-town(?) burn
Were you blind that day?
Bloody mayday
When the wild ones did their looting
And your boys came in there shooting
Were you blind that day?
You, safe in your disguise
Who lives behind those eyes?
I could swear theres no one there.
Were you crying out
For the ones who took the fall
When the hangman took them all?
Were you blind that day?
You
Safe in your disguise
Who lives behind those eyes
I could swear theres no one there.
I saw the fireworks
On the day your slaves were freed
Without one man fit to lead
Were you blind that day?
Nice thank you for posting this
Is anyone else here from Rabbits? Great song!
Great sound but the cool guitar riff following "the day your slaves were freed" (or "I just sing that Ghana rondo" on Third World Man) isn't in this mix. It IS part of other mixes on RUclips.
That's the best part of the song, IMHO.
This was planned for Aja right? Then was remade to third world man for Gaucho?
First recorded during the Royal Scam sessions
!
The song could be about "Kristallnacht" in Nazi Germany. Maybe "B-Town" is actually Berlin. And the lyric "YOU, safe in your disguise" is referring to a traitor who turned his fellow Jews in to the "Hangman" who took them all.
I always thought it was about MAD
I thought this was third world man
It is. Name change, new lyrics.
Well done what is the word he says in this line “ while you watched that ______ town burn” . Still can’t figure out that word. Best version i heard on here.
"while you watch that d-town burn" (downtown?)
It’s actually b-town

what happened to the rarities night vid?
Weird edit at 1:42. Needs a re-do. Was the guitar solo section taken from the actual Gaucho mix?
Indeed, also at 4:05 on the timeline, it reverts, I believe back to the GAUCHO mix, or portions thereof, without Carlton's winding down guitar solo ad-libs.. I TOTALLY have an open mind to those who give special care & tedious treatment to restorations; I hope they continue, for that was the PRIMARY REASON I did the original "out-of-phase" restoration to "Were You Blind That Day" on December 28, 2019. It took me a long time, with many re-do's, before I got it right and posted it, insomuch, it was downloaded, copied and re-uploaded by different You Tube channels. That was unnerving. However, this here, from what I can "hear", is a true-to-true attempted phase correction, stereo enhancing & proper re-master, however taking some production liberties; using portions of Gaucho's "Third World Man" to put the creative cherry on the top & finish off the job. I have no problem with that. I really appreciate when true, professional audio engineers, work copiously hard on their true & true, prized-projects. But those who simply take others work down, save it as a compressed, lossy format .MP3 or .MP4 & simply re-post it on their own channel...is a very, very low-brow...at best.
Good job "The Dan Vault" on your work.

It was recorded during the Royal Scam sessions. New lyrics, new name and added to Gaucho after The Second Arrangement fiasco.
Steve Gadd is on drums. He didn't play on the Royal Scam sessions. Pretty sure this was recorded for the Aja collection of songs. @@SwedestThing
@@johntabaccoWhen the song was reworked to follow in for The Second Arrangement, they added Gadd. Larry has stated it was during the Royal Scam sessions.
Gotta put those tasty Carlton licks during the last verse and the outro back in! Fine job otherwise.
Isn't it an outtake from "Aja" that was resurrected for "Gaucho?"
I think it goes even further back to royal scam
@@DrRetro11 … yes, I read a Larry Carlton statement a few years ago that also confirmed he recorded his guitar solo part for “Were You Blind…” during his session work for The Royal Scam sessions, but Donald Fagen seems to have a different recollection of that exact time period.
For now, I’ll go with LC’s memory here. He knows exactly what he was paid for…and when…
I believe it’s a royal scam outtake. And Donald just slapped new (in my opinion), worse lyrics on it during the recording of Gaucho after the second arrangement was deleted.
Nice cleanup job! I've never heard it sound this good. The song is broken as presented. The choruses in particular are just nowhere lyrically. Smart to change them almost entirely. This is fine but "Third World Man" is just classic. Thanks for sharing though!
One day I forced myself to pick my favorite Dan song. It wasn't easy. As most Dan fans, my favorite is the one I'm listening to at the moment. I eventually chose Third World Man. This version is cool, and of course I'm biased, but the lyrics just don't fit the mood of the song.
if it's not their best song, it's bloody close.
I can never decide if it's the music or the lyrics I love most
