March 1973 I had just completed US Air Force Basic Training. I was waiting to start Security Police Tech School at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Back then we got paid in cash. I went to the BX and bought a mid-sized portable AM/FM radio. As I was walking across the pedestrian bridge to the barracks I switched it on and this song started at the beginning. Perfect timing and burned into my brain. This song always takes me back to my carefree 19 year old self just starting out on the adult portion of life. It’s been a great journey.
I was in basic training from the end of June till the middle of August,we might have crossed paths,I also was 19,I can get mistey eyed listening to these tunes,I don’t think the now generations get it,don’t get me wrong I love how my life turned out,3 kids and 6 grandkids, thanks for the memories…
Sitting here ouzo and beer chasers listening to steely Dan and others of days of old remembering the good old days when good music was plentyful with meaning soul
I grew up in the UK during the seventies. Saw quite a few of those at that time. I just Googled some images to remind me of them. Very nice indeed. Enjoy the ride 🙂
The first Steely Dan song I ever heard on the radio was Do It Again. As a 12 year old kid, this haunting song captivated me and I've been a Dan fan ever since.
In 1972 what group could add Ravi Shankar, Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell, Elvin Jones, Ron Carter and Dr. Lonnie Smith to a rock/pop jazz influenced song and get air play on every radio station in LA and knock it out of the park in every way? Steely Dan that's who!!!!!!
❤ Pops would pick me up from work in Westwood Village in his 1970 Dodge Coronet with a 440 engine you could hear him coming Steely Dan would be playing on the radio station REST IN PEACE POPS ❤😢
How many of us can relate to our youth and remember when we were warned about dangers to avoid? And we went 'back, Jack, do it again". We kept doing things again and again, wheels turning round and round. Until we STOPPED finally. But so many of our friends did not. And we lost them.
I clearly temember this song when i was 12 back then, what a cool groove snd melody/lyrics, first time i heard of steely dan, bbecaame one of my fav bands of alltime, imagine this is your first notable song, always in the radio, it still holds up over 50 yrs later.
Truly. They only had three full band albums, and then Fagen & Becker stopped touring and brought in session musicians. Aja is considered the best of the lot. I like them all. Enjoy the journey.
This song right here just hits different I’m 24 going on 25 and this music just don’t get any better man I wish I live in this time to hear all the good music 💪🏼💪🏼 my mother and father are about 60 something years old and this is all I grow up listening to beside oldies
..Their lyrics can fill a book of poetry. The song above illustrates good writing. The meter in each line matches the one above. The flow is smooth. The rhyming pattern is A-B-A-B. You don't NEED melody or sound to read the lyrics and appreciate great writing skills. That's one reason I've always been a fan. I'm a writer so I have to highlight anyone with skills who practices creative writing. Compare this with other song writers. You'll see the huge difference in the quality of the lyrics. Most are forgettable, Fagan & Becker's words come easily even if we haven't heard the song in years.
Amen Brother. i was 10 in '70 and listened to my older sibs spin 45's during the 60's, but the 70's with Albums and the Evolution of The Stereo, Musicians and Talent was like the 60's were Black and White and the 70's Became Neon Lites and Full Cinematic Color....And the Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill changed Lives.
... and not having made enough merit นุญ to break out of that cycle on way to that ultimate quest of nirvana, it's those three defilements that get us all the time: greed, anger, and jealosy. up and down, all the time. that merry-go-round called denial. if "Do It Again" doesn't speak closest to the Four Noble Truths, I really don't know what does. deep here.
When I was Jack Kerouac in my past life, I knew there would be coked out troubadours to explain the Dharma to the fat and lazy, so I pushed my life to the end, and I now run a riverboat casino on Lake Tahoe.

They will never make music like they did in the 70s man those were the days❤
Definitely, the terrifying changes taking place were corporations (military industrial complex!) tail wagging the dog!
for a young man to be born in 78 , my dad had a great taste for music, guess what it rubbed off on me ,,, Do it again
You don't get bands that play these good music anymore/ Good old days/ where were you people/ my time /😂❤❤❤
Steely Dam is one of the best best bands/ and their music is affective and thrilling. 😊❤❤❤😂
In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water
And you fire 'til he is done in but they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin' as they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend
In a room with your two-timer, and you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one and she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin' you'll be on your knees tomorrow, yeah
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man
Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again

I’m 70. First time I heard this in 73 was a great conclusion to Woodstock!
I didn’t do Woodstock, but I loved the music. Still do. Makes me remember worry-free days. When the parents paid the bills!! 😅
@@Robbielou-t1u Definitely the parents fault and not the rapidly increasing bills and cost of living

Best fking sexy guitar solo around period!!
Great studio band. Fagan and Becker had the best session artists. Skunk Baxter rarely toured with the Doobies either.

Sick ass jam
Bass player walked ALL over this 😩
How is Steely Dan so connected to the Air Force? I did 20nand still love this band?

This song is about the futile nature of pursuing sustained pleasure in this world. The wheel of samsara (bhavacakra) turns round and round.
