Just sums up the yearning and hopes that follow ypu throughout your life. Beautiful. The guitar lead is so part of the whole soul of this number. Never tire of it. Thanks for loading it.
As a kid I had what school officials called “pacing problems.” Just rocking back and forth and walking back n forth. I became an attorney. I also taught school myself. But I remember when I was at my worst as a kid, I had an astute teacher that gave me musical therapy and I was introduced to the symmetrically beautiful composition of Steely Dan as I “walked it off”. Thank you for sharing, during the morning hours my beloved sister of memory, Bente, passed and without great music I've listened to all day, my heart could not accept this passing nor heal from it, it is so extraordinary, it also was there for you ...
You've got exceptionally good taste. ❤ There was so much great music being played in the 60s, but the 70s is the standout decade for me. In the 80s I discovered jazz, but I still listen to my 70s recordings regularly. This is my favourite Steely Dan song. 😊
I am from Sri Lanka. My age was 14 when I hear this song in the radio 1974. Now my age is 54 I still listen to his songs when I have fee time. Do it again song also nice song. Grate songs, never die.
I wasn't even born when this song came out. I would come along a few years later. I came of age in the 1990s, which meant of course that I wasn't supposed to like this stuff. You know because of "grunge" and "alternative rock" and besides it was what my dad listened to. But I love Steely Dan and this song is wonderful.
Wow, I know I'm getting old when most of these guys and girls are OLD or dead . At 59 I still believe I lived during the best time for music. And I thank God for that. The future of America looks bleak.

This is what has been lost with the Classic Rock Era; it wasn't just Zeppelin and Floyd and the Stones and the Beatles; it was Steely Dan and Yes and Savoy Brown and you can run the list for a quarter mile and not repeat yourself. Meanwhile Classic Rock stations of today's radio make it all seem like what we all despised in the day, top 40. RIP Walter. RIP Classic Rock, one more time.
The cream always comes to the top , after all these years I think if I wanted to hear my favorite play list I would just put on Steely Dan's greatest hits, boo,ya!!
Funny how that works isn't it? From generation to generation....but most of the musicianship is gone now. It's all blend ins, electronics and how many dancers (distractions) you can have standing behind you. Just perform. Most don't even SING anymore. We had singers that covered the whole spectrum of color, race, creed, religion, etc. Now it's just electronics and gimmicks galore! I hear a lot of talking, but not a lot of singing.....all about anger and death and poverty and injustice, and war, but not done the way our generation did it, where the outcome you desired was...peace! Not more anger.....and ignorance.
@@russhenderson2009 Perfectly stated. If you listen to Marvin Gaye's "whats going on"....He sings about what were still dealing with today(unfortunately) but the overall message is positive and uplifting.

Steely Dan songs are most often a work of art. Like a painting hanging on the wall, each time one revisits there is another insight, another feeling, another twist of interpretation - totally unique, very creative, timeless and inimitable.
The Dan is one of those bands whose sound is absolutely UNMISTAKABLE. Complex and yet easily enjoyed. There will never be another. 63 here and still a big fan of THE DAN.
This was a great song back in 1974. I too was a teenager, a little different I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I was getting ready to deploy to Okinawa when this was a hit. Sad time for me had to say goodbye to my cute girl friend. After 2 months on Okinawa she mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter" broke my heart.

I’m an avid listener of Steely Dan’s music, at 67 years old I still think that they were and are one of the greatest bands ever. Harmonies and the sheer musicality with superb musicians makes this band one of the best.
Steely Dan is just so damn good. They are eternal and forever. I don't think you can get tired of listening to their music. You can always come back to their music and writing.
Agree with all on this thread. As a recreational singer songwriter I learn all the time from SD but I still just enjoy the feelings I get from every song (bar Riki if I’m honest). But when I need an emo change I’ll go to JJCale. Complete turnaround. I luv him and learn to take it easy. That’s about it I think ...

@@charlesmaeger6162 thanks. I loved them from the time I was a kid and they influenced me greatly as a songwriter. I am a jazz musician and back in music school studying music therapy. I love turning the younger students on to this great music. We are generally asked to use 'client preferred music' when providing music therapy interventions. It seems Steely Dan is loved by all ages, once folks are exposed to their musical genius. The way they fused genres- rock, jazz and pop (think the #11 hit tune, 'Peg', and how wildly popular it was back in 1978), I honestly think Steely Dan is one of the most sophisticated groups to ever exist. They are truly one of a kind.
Ain't that the truth. One of a myriad of reasons that today's music is so bad is that a lot if it, regardless of the genre, is written and produced by the same writing/ production teams . The same writers and producers are behind hip hop, country, and pop songs. I read about it a few years ago. Back in the 80s, 70s, and 60s, songs were written by GROWNUPS who actually experienced life and wrote about said experiences. Sure there wer teen idols and bubblegum music, but they weren't as prevalent as they are today.
My mother forced me to take piano lessons, and I must admit I got pretty good with the classics, but Bach got boring and I wanted to play anything by Steely Dan, so I attempted to play the songs by ear. Mom surprised me one day with sheet music, and to this day I still have it. Donald and Walter have been around in my life for as far back as I can remember, and I will never forget how their music soothed me.
I agree. Summer of 1974, I was in the United States Marine Corps home on 30 days leave, before I transferred to Okinawa. Remember this song and other ones before kissing my girlfriend goodbye. Another 1974 HS alum here. I didn't know how great this music was at the time as I was lamenting the passing of Hendrix, Morrison and Joplin. Disco was in the air and there was a resurgence of 50's music with American Graffiti and Happy Days. Steely Dan, Zepplin, Alice Cooper, Skynrd, Aerosmith, Stones, Boston, Yes, Elton John, Pink Floyd...just a few of the many great bands.
That guitar solo by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter so impressed me as a 14 year old kid in 1974, and still does now at 64 in 2024. 50 years later it's still a treasure of musical art. We had such great music to grow up to!
Fun fact-skunk Baxter is a largely self taught rocket scientist who did trajectory calculations for nasa. No shit, right? Edit- had the details wrong. He testified for a congressional committee and consulted with the pentagon on missile defense technology. My bad.

Right? Stellar musicianship and writing will do that. Not to mention production, which was always on point. With good headphones plugged in, one can get lost in all the details that you'd otherwise miss out on! The Dan rules.

Dave, it's like ordering a smorgasbord...when you get these dudes, you get all flavours, and they are all prime...kia ora from New Zealand....I left high school in 1973, and these guys, Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, John Mayall, Jethro Tull...man...the talent and the sounds...oh, and Tommy Johnson from the Doobies...and probably a few more that I've forgotten...

This album lived on the turntable in an apartment in London where the curtains rarely opened , I think I’m one of the only ones still alive out of all those lost souls , I thought I’d listen to see what memories it brought back , and I’m sitting here at 71 wiping away tears ,,music is powerful
Yes, tears... Seems these guys, more than others, somehow, were the soundtrack/background music of our lives.

Like an old friend. Xoxo
Wow that's amazing
Great story. Peace.
Thank you for sharing, during the morning hours my beloved sister of memory, Bente, passed and without great music I've listened to all day, my heart could not accept this passing nor heal from it, it is so extraordinary, it also was there for you ...

That Guitar Solo by Jeff “Skunk” Baxter is just epic.
I love this guitar solo too!
The best guitar solo of all time IMO
I got to meet Skunk Baxter at a paid appearance at a local music store. I was pleased to find him an humble and gracious gentleman. A great musician.
Wow, I didnt know that was Skunk. That solo always gave me that tingly feeling up my spine. Pure perfection!
Always thought a guitar solo should move the song forward and I can think of no better example than this one.
Its 2024, i was born in the 90s and i only listen to 60s, 70s, and 80s music. Steely dan is one of my favorites
You've got exceptionally good taste. ❤ There was so much great music being played in the 60s, but the 70s is the standout decade for me. In the 80s I discovered jazz, but I still listen to my 70s recordings regularly. This is my favourite Steely Dan song. 😊
Agree I'm your age an older rock'in girl.HA 😂
Congrats young man you'll have the greatest taste in music...forever!

Yes this is real music wish I could go back
Born in the right generation, having access to good music like this
There is no "wrong" generation, ever hear big band jazz? Mozart? Louis Armstrong?
I wasn't even born when this song came out. I would come along a few years later. I came of age in the 1990s, which meant of course that I wasn't supposed to like this stuff. You know because of "grunge" and "alternative rock" and besides it was what my dad listened to.
But I love Steely Dan and this song is wonderful.
1974, I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I had this cassette and worn it out. Id go back to 1974, and stay.
When the day comes I hope I've already passed because that would definitely Marc the end of I !!!

I can remember my mom slamming the music I was listening to in the 70's...... compared to the crap of today, this stuff is GOLD!

@@charlesmaeger6162 thanks. I loved them from the time I was a kid and they influenced me greatly as a songwriter. I am a jazz musician and back in music school studying music therapy. I love turning the younger students on to this great music. We are generally asked to use
'client preferred music' when providing music therapy interventions.

+gameblor You are dead right there!!! Its a shame really as there must be great talent out there but all we get is manufactured crap.
Check out Mac DeMarco's 'Salad Days' on RUclips, he's kind of doing an imitation Steely Dan, but its okay.
