I put on my new raw denim jeans on april 26, 2015 and around that time I also watched this video. In 2 days my jeans will turn 1 year without a single wash. They look amazing with all their creases and such and today I'm washing them for the first time and I'm so excited!

Want to begin with dry/raw denim?
Cheaper: Unbranded, Cheap Monday, certain Nudie Jeans, Levi's STF
Medium: Naked & Famous, A.P.C. Atelier laDurance
High end: Momotaro, Iron Heart, Samurai, Somet
For clean freaks: one guy got his jeans tested at university at the beginning and after months of wearing: bacteria levels were not different from one that was worn just one day. Smell depends on your own hygiene and what you do, no one can smell anything from my dry jeans :P

It's funny reading the number of comments saying that not washing your jeans is disgusting. The CEO of Levi's said at a conference that he hadn't washed his jeans in over a year. I never wash mine and there's absolutely no smell. Obviously if you spill some food on them you'll want to sponge it off but there's no need to throw them in the washing machine.

I have been wearing US made shrink-to-fit (STF) Levis 501xx jeans since 1970 so I have a lot of experience with "raw" jeans. I don't believe your recommendations are practical. Before washing, Levis STF 501xx jeans are way too big to wear. So much that it is hard to believe they will shrink enough to fit, but they do. If you buy too small a size so that they fit when unwashed, then you can never wear them again once they are washed. Levis STF 501xx jeans are so stiff you can't wear them before washing. Even after the first washing and drying they are still too stiff. I have to wash them at least twice before they don't hurt.
My beliefs are that anyone who buys Levis STF 501xx jeans that fit them before being washed is wasting their money, and anyone who wears them before washing is a masochist.

They might not smell, at least not that much, there are bacteria called AOB (Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria) that develop and they consume the smelly ammonia. AOBs are really beneficial bacteria can remove smell, heal wounds, reduce acne and help keep your skin clean.
You might think that cavemen were really smelly, in fact this might not be true because of AOBs. If you stop showering with soap and use just water after 2 weeks the smell of sweat will go away and stay away, I tried it and my acne also healed up really well during that time. The bacteria is also used in some hospitals to spray directly on wounds to help them heal faster and better. There's also a commercial skin care product.

Decent video, it covers some very general knowledge. But misses a few key points. I think as an average not-in-the-know viewer was to watch this, he or she would assume that unwashed denim is this new phenomenon. And while it certainly has made a comeback within the last decade or so, unwashed/selvedge construction jeans are about as old as time itself. That's why people like myself enjoy them. it represents tradition, an Era where things were simply built better. the 'self edge' lining comes from the old shuttle looms, which bind the ends of the fabric neatly and clean. This is how denim was ORIGINALLY produced. Owning a pair of Cone Mills denim is like putting on a piece of history. In the mid-late 70s companies started using a much faster denim production technique known as projectile looms. While they can weave denim in higher volumes and in much shorter time, leave these very frayed/messy ends to the fabric, which is much more likely to unravel than your traditional selvedge cut. with that out of the way, as far as the smell goes I have never had a problem with that. I'm 6 months strong into my 17oz Cone denim from Left Field NYC (Made in the good ole USA) and I have no odors whatsoever. and I wear these jeans pretty damn hard. I guess it all comes down to personal hygiene? I shower twice a day so my likely hood of smelling like shit is low. I see pre-distressed jeans as asinine. Since the factory methods of distressing the jeans are extremely tough on the fabric (they often get washed and dried with basalt stones lol) it's like buying a brand new car from the dealership but they "broke it in" for you by adding 15,000 miles on it.

I found it curious that you hadn't mentioned the sizing/shrinkage factor which is critical to unsanforized denim. My cheap LEVIS STF get the hot water tub soak for an hour, then drip damp and out on until dry. This is the raw denim custom fit method, THEN wear without washing for extended period.
A critical component of the goal.for me. My 34' inseam is now 31' and perfect!

Might have been mentioned before but freezing temps _don't_ kill bacteria. What will remove the bacteria is to heat the jeans up to 110F. Also, studies have shown very little increase in bacteria on unwashed jeans when compared to washed jeans.

One thing to note is that washing raw denim is really a catch 22 situation. If you dont wash them you'll get nicer fades but you'll almost certainly get a crotch blowout. If you like the look of patches then it's fine but it's not a matter of if it happens, it's when. My two older pairs have it and I've had to get them patched.

501 shrink to fit requires a wash to shrink to your body. This does not mean to throw them in the machine, but to turn them inside out, put hot water in the tub, soak the jeans for an hour, hang them and let them drip dry, then get some towels and soak up the rest of the water. Then wear them while they are damp until they dry. Do not wash them again for about 6 months repeat.

    Hey Alpha, long time follower here. There are some inherent problems with wearing ANY new clothes without washing, espcially denim;
    1) dyes and chemicals used in any new clothes (especially denim) will be in direct contact with your skin and open pores as your body temp goes up. Lots of science on this, not going to write out stats.
    2) garments shipped from overseas are bathed in pesticides because of legal regulations.
    3) people try these things on sometimes, and some people are filthy (I know from 7 years of working retail fashion from macy's to armani).
**HAND WASH at the very least!**

Good video but there are a couple things I wanted to add. The whole 6 month rule isn't always true. It all depends on how much fade you are able to get on your jeans. if you wear them more rigorously then you might be able to wash them even earlier. And when it comes to the stink, you just gotta make sure you keep yourself clean. I've been wearing my pair for 7 months now and they smell fine. they had some smelly days but i did what i had to do to keep them on the clean side.

If you want a correct pair of jeans for about 80$, get a pair of Unbranded (they're sold at Urban Outfitters).
For 140$ you can get a pair of Naked and Famous.
Usually for a little bit more cash, you can get a pair of Nudie,APC,LVC.
Most of the time the brand of your denim will effect how it's fading, and how long it takes to fade.
If you have alot of cash to spend, look for Iron Heart, Pure Blue Japan, Momotaro,Oni etc.
I spray my jeans with Lysol and let them hang outside. They smell allright

Selvedge denim is not about having a stronger seam, that comes from the stitching. Sure, the edge of the fabirc is less inclined to fray than a raw cut edge, but non selvedge jeans are merrowed which prevents fraying. Selvedge denim refers to jeans cut from narrower denim fabric with that beautiful selvedge edge on the fabric. Because the fabric is so narrow (~30") the pattern pieces are placed with the outside seam along the edge of the fabric . This makes the best use of the fabric and gives that prestigious seam visible at the cuff.

I also prefer the look of fresh raw denim than worn. You can get raw denim and wash them after buying them ,raw denim comes starched as it makes the fibers easier to weave. By removing the starch the jeans are less abrasive and fade more slowly. You jeans will still fade but at a much slower pace.

Yeah if all you do all day is sit at a desk, and then hit up the local microbrewery downtown for happy hours, yeah it will take 6 months to get some wear. If you are in the trades, you work hard for a living and the same amount of wear can be accomplished in just one month. Or two months. Results vary on denim and how hard you work.

the term selvedge isn´t fully explaned here. a selvedge jeans is thigter woven then a regular jeans. The selvedge line on the inside is exually the side line of the fabric role. a thigter woven fabric is much stronger then a normal fabric. This is why a selvedge jeans is also much more durable then a normal jeans.

Oh, and once you're ready to wash them, put about 1 inch of warm water in your bathtub, put a little bit of Woolite and if you want you can also add salt in the water.
Let your jeans soak for a few mins, then wash them with your hands. The more you play with them when you wash them for the first time, the more indigo will go away.
And obviously hang them to dry, never use the drying machine.

Does ironing jean good for jeans. thinking that i could help killing the bacteria and virus attached to it especially this time of pandemic. is it good? thank you

Don't follow the 6 month rule. If they stink too much, wash them; if not, keep wearing them. I feel that the freezer method doesn't really work. It's bacteriostatic, not anti-bacterial--it just stops the bacteria from growing for a while.
Also, it is advisable to own one pair of dark denim (raw or not) for occasions when you have to be a little more presentable (i.g. dates, dinners, etc.)

This seems interesting and all but I think I will go buy some jeans that were distressed in the factory and call it a day. Personally I don't care to smell like a dead hobo's exploded ass for a year just to get the same effect. Maybe this works out better for people in cooler climates where you aren't instantly drenched the second you walk out the door during the summer.

+JLConawayII In my experience raw denim doesn't really smell after aging too bad... Alpha sort of made it seem like the wreak. If you put your nose up to them sure they might smell a bit, but they're not terrible. Of course, that's my experience, living in Michigan. There are many ways to combat this too. A lot of denimheads say that at some point you HAVE to wash, or else the bacteria will eat away at the pants and cause them to rip much quicker (in places like the crotch where you don't really want rips).

doesn't smell as bad as you think I have a pair I haven't washed in about about 18 months but you cant really tell unless you stuff your nose in them. No one has ever noticed any odor coming off of them.

If anyone sees this: you DO NOT have to wait 6 months to wash your raw denim-just wait until they develop a level of character you are comfortable with (or wash when they are gross!!!!)

This is important. Putting jeans into the freezer DOES NOT KILL BACTERIA. It may kill some, but most will just thaw out and live on.

  • @johnnybluejeans1979
    @johnnybluejeans1979 11 лет назад

The thing he didn't mention, and should have emphasized, is that people get raw denim mostly for the custom fit, not to get custom fade patterns. You wear them damp and they form to your body. No need to wear them for six months. Also, not everyone lives in the southeast and sweats through their jeans in two days.

What's always worked for me is to put a spray or two of cologne on the inside rise/crotch area of the jean. Freezing is also great, but I've found that it does not have to be done that often, unless your jeans are put in an unusual situation in a days wear that entails unplanned or unexpected activity.

  • @MrRudeboy45

its not the fact that its raw which makes it more expensive. Alot of companies that specialize in raw denim use better materials and they are constructed better. You can find alot of raw denim which uses selvedged denim. It is an old fashioned way to make denim, which uses rare machinery. depending one where the company gets the denim can mean a higher quality, more durable material

Ha Ha. Putting jeans into a freezer is just dumb.
Q: Why does frozen Chicken smell EXACTLY the same as frozen Shit?
A: Because nothing frozen solid has a smell.
Also. Nobody has ever smelled bacteria.
The smell we get comes from their waste products. Cold doesn't' make that stuff go away.
Freezing won't make a rotten hamburger smell nice when its thawed, now will it?

    • @travisbaley7337
      @travisbaley7337 9 лет назад +3

Petra Smith You don't science, do you? The smell of chicken and feces is not the same as body odor. Body odor comes from bacteria that live on/in you. Even the smell of your own flatulence comes from bacteria that live in your intestine. As Aaron put it, freezing the jeans will kill the bacteria that have transferred to them. Most living things will die when frozen for an extended period of time. And because these tiny organisms have died, they no longer exude an odor.

I really love these videos, but what about those of us that don't have $100 to drop on a pair of jeans? What about us living on a tight budget that still want to look our very best?
Have you ever considered doing a video about how to build a basic, budget friendly wardrobe?
Also, where can I get cheap but decent quality fitted V-necks? A lot of people recommended target, but their fit doesn't work for me. My usual medium is far too tight, and the large far too long on my short 5'7" frame.

After wearing out countless pairs of stretch jeans in months, I got my first pair of APCs. I wear them exclusively around the house and steam them occasionally. Sure it'll take longer to get that fade but they'll be customized and more durable than the stretch garbage they're selling. My boyfriend doesn't complain about the smell so I think I'm good. I don't think his APCs smell either. When and if they do, we can be gross together for a few months :p
