I think one of the battles of well-fitting jeans, especially in classic denims, is that we're applying the fit and movement expectations of a wool or cotton smart-casual trouser to a fabric weight and seam construction which was never originally intended to fit that way. It's a case of "style" and "fit" becoming conflated on a garment type that wasn't historically originally designed to fit, fall, or move in the same way as we now want it to
This was great! No lie, I’ve probably donated $800 worth of jeans this year because they don’t fit as good as two pairs I purchased two years ago. I’m still searching for the right fit and this gave me a better idea of what to look for.
The worst is when you are a size (EU) 35, but 35 does not exist. 34 is slightly too tight, and 36 requires a tight belt to keep up. WHERE IS MY SIZE 35?????? Ugh. Point is, I totally relate to donating jeans. Now, I always order 2 different sizes and return the ones that don’t fit.

Alot of people dont look at rise/take into account where the pants sit, and they also measure their hips need to measure both hips and waist to understand if you buy high rise pants, you should wear them as so and go by your waist. Where as if you buy low rise/plan to wear pants near your hip you should be measuring your hip.
I've run into problems in the past year as I've transitioned away from skinny jeans into straight cut. I opted for Levis's 501s, but my problem has been with the waist sizing. Every other pair of jeans I had before getting the 501s fit perfectly in a 32, but for Levi's a 32 was wayyyyy bigger. When I tried on a size 30, they fit much better in the waist but were very tight in the thigh. I just decided to go with the 32 and make adjustments to them. Now I know what to look out for when getting new jeans. Great video and especially great editing :)
After a lifetime of ill fitting jeans I found my perfect style: slim fit. I went all in and sunk a lot of money in slim fit denim in all the seasonal colors. Life was good. Then one day I made the fateful decision to start "hitting the gym" and made a point of "not skipping leg day". Fast forward one year and now my coworkers are accusing me of wearing skinny jeans. I wanna scream but you just gotta laugh at the tragedy. I used to wonder about the gym bros and their ridiculous looking skinny jeans but now I get it. They're victims of their own success. I can actually roll them up to put my socks on lol, hell you could probably do squats in them.
Slim straight fit works pretty well for me because it's tight around the right and rear but loose around the calves so it doesn't look like I'm wearing a girls jeans.

Typically the makers of men’s garments tend to flatter us with their waist sizes. If one buys a pair of 32 inch jeans then when measured it will usually fit a size 34 waist. That might be why some people suggest sizing down. When it comes to jeans my go to brand is Naked and Famous, who provide detailed size charts for each of their designs. It’s worth noting the variations - even if you go for the same cut for a different pair, the sizing might not be the same. I often have to get my jeans shortened slightly, so I wash them before getting it done to allow for shrinkage.

I discovered your channel via Rose Anvil and you are doing some cool stuff, thanks. My cop-out jean buying method is to find one brand and size that fits, in my case that's Levi's 501s, 32W 36L, and just wear those for the rest of your life. And ALWAYS wear a belt, we're not animals. I agree, manufacturers' tolerances can be a problem. I once bought two pairs of Levi's online with the same 32W 36L size and one pair was an inch shorter than the other. My local Levi's store changed them without an argument but I'd say the quality control isn't what used to be.
When I buy a new pair of STF 501’s I like going in and trying every size 36 to see which one fits me the best. There’s little variance in manufacturing and you can really nail a pair down the rest of the way like this
Thank God brands, some brands anyway, introduced the athletic cut. I'm a big guy with muscular thighs and calves and jeans never really fit well. I like those with a bit more room in the thigh that taper below the knee to at least make it look like I vaguely know how to dress myself. My favorites so far are the Bonobos Premium 4-Way Stretch Jeans. Great video!
For years I have said we have all these stupid laws on the books, why don't we have a simple law that would require a size is a size across all manufacturers? A 32 waist is a 32 waist no matter the manufacturer. I know shrinkage would be an issue but it could be accounted for. A size 10 shoe is a size 10 shoe everywhere.
I started wearing the Shrink-to-fit 501's from Levis during college - I still have my first pair which are over 10 years old now. I bought two more pairs about 3 years ago now but I've only developed one of them, the other sits untouched in my drawer till I need them. I've found the right way to make them work me - once they're broken in and shrink up a bit they fit GREAT. I am just under 6'2'' with long legs. I get the 33'' waist and 36'' length so I can cuff. They're a bit short w/ the cuff (about 1.5'' cuff) but a big part of how jeans will fit/look is dependent on the shoes you're wearing with them. When I wear some Chuck 70 hightops they look great, my 8'' leather boots, Clarks Desert boots. If I wear my Adidas Gazelle's or low top chuck 70's... IMO, they look funny. Michael's video about fit from a couple years back (carrot fit) is also really good.
I agree 100%, the manufacturers are using a marketing ploy, "comfort" which is B.S. because if one wears their 100% cotton denim in a way they find comfortable instead of whining about the size differences between manufacturers, styles, fits they would figure out that 100% Cotton breaths so it is cooler in the summer and the fabric lasts longer.
@@nahguacm I never knew of that being an issue before unless you are wearing your jeans to loose and the extra fabric getting to much friction from rubbing together.
@@nahguacmYou think stretch works better for cycling? My experience is that stretch pants are less durable over all but never really thought about bike wear specifically
I once bought 21oz jeans unsanforized in size 28 as my first pair, I downsized instead of up sized by mistake, and the pants technically didn't fit me after soak, but I forced it to fit pass through my hip bone when the pants was wet and I sat down to button it, numbing my balls for months, eventually though the pants fit me, it shrank again on the second wash to a lesser degree, and a little bit again on 3rd wash, but after sometime it stabilize and it fits me on the hip and waist I think the positive the upperblock of the pants is really on it's maximum stretch and won't stretch out of size and won't turn saggy ever, the downside was the pain to breaking in the new pants after first soak, and recurring tightness over the few first washes until all the tensions is stabilizing
Buying jeans is a lottery. Manufacturers size labels don't apply to the jeans the label is on!!! There is no quality control for sizing. After all these years, how can a waist measurement differ by two inches?
i wear a 29 x 32 Levi 514 slim straight, it is my all around favorite. I probably could wear a 31 waist without tension, but i prefer to wear them tight with my shirt out. Unfortunately Levi's has made many changes to the cut and fabric content of the 514, i only buy the older versions used now.
You can also get jeans Made to Measure from some brands. Doesn't even hike up the price too much imo. I get my jeans from a Dutch brand, Atelier Munro, and they have anything from easy stretchy jeans to natural indigo selvedge jeans, with multiple steps in-between, something for everyone, regardless of where they stand on the denimnerd scale.
Honestly you’re fantastic. And you make great videos. Thanks for putting your heart into it. Also this was hilarious because I am a guy that doesn’t fit into most jeans and I just went ham with some Freenote Cloth… had to size up waist 1 size but got the thighs and arse to fit. The mobility knee raise test is key for me. Also glad I bought bigger. Haven’t washed yet either. Supposedly will take it down a size again? Or tailor the waist. I turn to Mamoa for my fashion choices these days. Wear them hard and let them hang.
Do you think its possible to just rock varying fits of jeans instead of going the same exact dimension in each area across varying styles? Like sometimes I enjoy having a slimmer silhouette and sometimes I enjoy a looser drape, But rarely do I enjoy the same style in differing cloth.
I recently noticed this advice, and my jeans have been fitting much better than before. that is to say, diff fit + correct size and less tight tensioned slims. However, the issue I run into now is that with these... "barely hugging me fits / waist" they will sag ever soooo slightly, therefore making the whole pant lose its shape holding and mroe like a droopy pant in butt / crouch. not like terrible, but just not how when its on the waist. but If i size down 1 on this straight fit to be correct on the waist, then boom, there goes the tightness on the hips... its a struggle. a thing.
I’ve constantly had fit issues for the last couple years purely because of my thighs, but my feet are generally on the smaller end of the spectrum and as a result my ankles too. So usually even if I find a pair that fits in both thighs and waist, which is rare, they then feel too baggy around the ankles. I might just resign myself to going and getting all my jeans tailored in the future
I’d love to see you cover height too height has always played a big part into what jeans I buy because some seem to be made for the jolly green giant and others made for the seven dwarves
the best fitting jeans i've ever worn were, funny enough, just a no-name Asos brand I got on sale. Instantly bought 2 more so i wouldn't have to worry about finding more jeans that fit for the foreseeable future. They're actually decent quality too, 100% cotton and reasonably heavy denim
I've noticed that Levi's tend to be around an inch bigger in the waist than the true waist size. Wrangler Cowboy Cut tend to be true to waist size. I'm a woman but wear men's jeans because I'm tall and have narrow hips. Wrangler Cowboy Cut Slim Fit 32x32 fit me perfectly. Levi's 501 require me to buy 31x32. Levi's 501 used to fit true to size many years ago.
It took me a LOT of time to find fitting jeans and my actual fix is to actually buy baggy jeans that fit my waist and then tailor them. Because 4 years ago I was skinny athletic (martial arts, BMX and Surfing) but since 4 years ago I decided to invest more into martial arts and I started lifting weights. Now I weight 90kg (200lbs??) and I'm 180cm (5'11) and EVERYTIME I buy jeans that are supposed to be straight cut, they actually become skinny on me. And for whatever reason, in my country, they make pants for people that have big bellies and skinny legs, because my waist is size 44/46 (34/36 US size) and the pants' legs always become skinny on me.
Why are inseam length and waist width not the same. Some brands like h&m have 28W/28L but others it's always 28/32 or 28/30 why is it different, is there a reason
I agree, unfortunately in today's world we're not supposed to show are physiques off because it's not the politically correct thing to do, especially in a world of obesse couch potatoes, the rules have flipped, now the fatso takes priority.
I found lots of jeans in my size at Burlington and I swear some of the jeans had super long legs despicable being 30 inches in length. Such inconsistency in Jean length. Ugh.
for the last several years, I have the habit of trying on 2 to 3 pairs of the same size jeans. I have noticed that even though they are the same size, for example 34x32, each one will fit me differently. After trying them on, I purchase the one that fits the best. I have this issue with Levi's and Lucky Jeans. I have Levi's that are the same style, but different colors and they fit completely different. For example, I wear Levi's 541s, the darker color I wear a 36x30, if it's the lighter blue, I have to wear a 34x30. Drives me crazy.
@@chrismarland6568 i like bravestar strongman, some wide leg red tornado jeans, and those are really the only brands I've had luck with. I tried Gustin, cult of individually, unbranded but they were made for skinny dudes. The strongman ones are probably my favorite as a dude with big thighs
@@chrismarland6568I’m still in search. Tried on over 50 pair of jeans, maybe too picky. Might just get oversized jeans with a good waist and tailor them all
I have multiple pairs of Levi's and even though they have the same measurements and are the same model 2 of them are almost skinny on me while the other one fits almost perfectly being almost too large. I had the same issue with their t-shirts, some XLs are perfect, others are obviously small. Again same style of t-shirt and everything
As a female it gets complicated when the waist height stylesnkeep changing. High waist is a completely different number than low waist. Then you throw in loose fit or fitted and it gets confusing.
I can't get the top block right. I should be 32" waist but I need to go for 34" to get enough room in the seat. I have no jeans cos of this. Jeans used to fit me fine before I started going to the gym 5 or so years ago, but haven't been able to get a pair that fits since
The biggest problem I have is the crotch area. Yeah, that's embarrassing. The fabric around the fly will crimp or fold inward instead of lying flat. I have found this to be mitigated by correcting the rise of the pants. Unfortunately, it can be expensive because the rise is really two measurements: the (1)front and (2)back rise.
I have bought a pair of Edwin jeans, and now just watched your video 😂 I check using the hand methods and its all good. A question tho, 100% cotton jeans or blends? Is it a measure of quality? any advantages or disadvantages?
A caveat that should be mentioned is that some fabrics stretch more than others. IH 21oz is one that the owner can expect about a half inch stretch on the top-block. Size these too loose and you get that saggy-seat which is an objectively poor outcome. Otherwise sage advice.
I learned today that, apparently somewhere out in this wide world, there are jeans with Velcro (hook and loops for all the copyright lawyers viewing) flys. Wild!
I don't wanna feel like I'm reading too much into things, but I feel like there's a hint about who you're talking about in the way you say tailoring so frequently... Also is too tight jeans the reason why mine always go in exactly the same place? I've tried so many brands.
When I try on 32" waist pants, some fit me perfectly, some are too loose, and some are too tight. WTF? Why can't clothing manufactures measure the same? Maybe jeans shrink when washed, but aren't they supposed to be preshrunk (I'm talking to you Levi's)?
My Problem is that my Jeans always have a LOT of creases in the knee area. It really annoys me. I never had Jeans that just fall down on my legs normally, they always crease, no matter If they are wide or slimmer fitting. Any Tips?
@@derlangelehrer5663 if the knee bags go away when you wash them but come back after a few wears it's the stretch material. It gets stretched and hangs loose
Ok so you give advice about the top block but you yourself are between sizes so none of these actually fit you? I’m so confused as to how I’m gonna get my right size when you can’t?!
I think your waist to hip ratio may potentially play a role too. If your waist to hip ratio is a 1 or more, perhaps could be a factor why you would generally look bad in jeans.

I got completely distracted every time that gorgeous Grand Seiko was in the shot and had to rewind multiple times to follow. Thanks.
Oh the spreadsheets I made when buying my Iron Hearts... but GD if it wasnt worth every second for the perfect fit!
Juicy hair and great video👍🏻. Thank you for the insight into jeans 👖
Why are inseam length and waist width not the same. Some brands like h&m have 28W/28L but others it's always 28/32 or 28/30 why is it different, is there a reason
Body is what matters
Your physique is the most important fashion component
If you get the right fit it doesn't matter as much. But yes I agree.
I agree, unfortunately in today's world we're not supposed to show are physiques off because it's not the politically correct thing to do, especially in a world of obesse couch potatoes, the rules have flipped, now the fatso takes priority.
@@user-tg6el6zc4tyou have that perpetual victim mind set.
I found lots of jeans in my size at Burlington and I swear some of the jeans had super long legs despicable being 30 inches in length. Such inconsistency in Jean length. Ugh.
Loved the Bo Burnam lemon scene 👌🏼👌🏼
Literally only one pair of jeans fit me perfectly, Levi’s 512 which I scored for only $14.99 at Target.
Same here. Best fit from Levi's
Ha! Love the @stridewise reference at the end. The man does squats!
for the last several years, I have the habit of trying on 2 to 3 pairs of the same size jeans.
I NEED TO KNOW THE DESIGNER OF THE ORANGE RINGER TEE WITH THE TIGER YOURE WEARING!!!!!
Thick boys like me struggle with real denim. Damn near impossible to find stuff that fits ok
Have you ever found anything from any brand that works? I've got thunder thighs myself
@@chrismarland6568bravestar strongman are the ones I've had the best luck with
@@chrismarland6568I’m still in search. Tried on over 50 pair of jeans, maybe too picky. Might just get oversized jeans with a good waist and tailor them all
Juicy hair Mikey, juicy hair!
Love all your videos man.
Bit confused on my sizing now lol, I can do the palm test no issue on my jeans but the button has a crease at the top.
The thought of a balding solution reaching out and saying "we think you'd be a great fit as a sponsor" makes me laugh.
As a female it gets complicated when the waist height stylesnkeep changing. High waist is a completely different number than low waist. Then you throw in loose fit or fitted and it gets confusing.
That last comment he made was beautiful, and 100% about
I can't get the top block right. I should be 32" waist but I need to go for 34" to get enough room in the seat. I have no jeans cos of this. Jeans used to fit me fine before I started going to the gym 5 or so years ago, but haven't been able to get a pair that fits since
Now this is quality content! 👌
On what not to wear they fit the waist last and have the person tailor it. I think tailors are key.
High rise with a long torso doesn't work if your waist is low. It just makes for a crotch of the pants that's too low.
I have bought a pair of Edwin jeans, and now just watched your video 😂 I check using the hand methods and its all good. A question tho, 100% cotton jeans or blends? Is it a measure of quality? any advantages or disadvantages?
I want to see the extremely graphic version of measuring... why?
This is very informative, thanks mr. Snail.
A caveat that should be mentioned is that some fabrics stretch more than others. IH 21oz is one that the owner can expect about a half inch stretch on the top-block. Size these too loose and you get that saggy-seat which is an objectively poor outcome. Otherwise sage advice.
That's nice. May we see the more graphic version of this video now?
Just casually watching a man put his hands in his pants...
You watching Married With Children? 😂
I learned today that, apparently somewhere out in this wide world, there are jeans with Velcro (hook and loops for all the copyright lawyers viewing) flys. Wild!
What’s the watch you’re wearing I’m liking it
I don't wanna feel like I'm reading too much into things, but I feel like there's a hint about who you're talking about in the way you say tailoring so frequently... Also is too tight jeans the reason why mine always go in exactly the same place? I've tried so many brands.
The snailien fit !!!
Which Grand Seiko are you wearing??
Great video. Does taking in the waist result in a weird new seam and does it cost much? Id be doing this to ~300$ selvedge denim.
Take a look at the seem running up the back of the seat. That is usually what they take apart to trim the waist.
question any news on the mammoth jacket?
great content love you levis collection
6:43 really caught me off guard 😆
When I try on 32" waist pants, some fit me perfectly, some are too loose, and some are too tight. WTF? Why can't clothing manufactures measure the same? Maybe jeans shrink when washed, but aren't they supposed to be preshrunk (I'm talking to you Levi's)?
I love jeans
are you wearing an omiwatari on your wrist?
Then add a inside the wristband firearm. Yea... i haven't figured it out
Very informative. I have a question though, how do you avoid knee bags? Do I need more taper or less or does the issue happen else where?
Bigger difference/taper between the thigh width and shin width, I'd say.
Shout out to this dude living the ThuLyfe using Shant lol... 0:38
Michael taking his fashion cues from 5 year old me at the weekly cub scouts meeting
Brilliant video
Love your watch by the way.
Nice Grand Seiko!
Depop haul?
My Problem is that my Jeans always have a LOT of creases in the knee area. It really annoys me. I never had Jeans that just fall down on my legs normally, they always crease, no matter If they are wide or slimmer fitting. Any Tips?
Like they pull tight or they’re loose? If they are loose in the knee and have bags it’s likely due to elastane or spandex. Stick to 100% cotton
@@darktoster one of them is a 501, so its straight fit. I think it has around 70% cotton, I did Not know that would make such a difference
Is it just me, or is Michael’s hair looking super juicy?
Wolverine hair!
