Good video for those looking for extreme fades, and very good points made about not overstressing the washing aspect. Personally I don't like this kind of extreme fading, I think they look artificial and just plain over the top, but then again, I grew up wearing jeans in the '60s and 70s and they were good quality and faded naturally, because as a kid and teenager we didn't own multiple pairs, most people had one pair they would wear until it got very worn, and then you'd buy a new pair to overlap for a while so you had a good pair to wear when you needed to look less casual, and the heavily worn pair that was supremely comfortable that would be used for hacking around, playing outside, doing chores, etc.
The thing I find the most paradoxical these days with many denim heads is that they either have so many pairs they never get to the well-worn stage, and that the search for extreme fades means that the jeans are washed so rarely they start to blow out and tear long before the denim has faded overall and become worn to that soft velvety stage that is impossible to fake and that only lasts a few months before the jeans start to fall apart.
I rarely see people these days with a really nice pair of faded worn jeans, they either are super dark, artificially faded, or have these modern extreme fades that lack the elegance and subtlety of a naturally faded and worn pair that have got that way from natural use and occasional but not excessively rare washing.

I often cheat by buying nice used jeans for 1/3 or less new value . One of the things I've learned along my 'denim journey' is how conditioned we are to constantly wash our clothes.
As you said, hanging clothes out in the sun with a nice breeze is a severely underrated way to save time, wear and tear on your garments, and of course gallons and gallons of water.
Great vid and tips for us all. Pretty cool you even got a special guest in the comments section! 🤙

    Hey Fjorde,
    Great video and great info!
If I could add something about the 6 month advice. I’d say 6 months is usually the time it takes for wear patterns to fully form and be somewhat faded. When they look like this it’s a good time to think about washing your jeans, the longer you wait the higher the contrast.
That said, if you wear your jeans hard everyday you might get there sooner than 6 months. Or if you don’t wear your jeans as often you may not be there at 6 months. Not everybody will be at the same place at 6 months, or you may have a stubborn denim that just doesn’t fade as quickly. I’d say once you really notice a real difference in the contrast of your wear patterns, that’s a good time to consider washing.
Personally, I get to this point, and then I’ll wash semi regularly. Maybe every 2 or 3 months, to accentuate the overall fades (and sometimes I’ll throw in a little bleach into the wash). I find I get to a vintage look much faster this way. The dryer will also help this process, after all the dryer is another opportunity for your jeans to be tumbled around being slightly abraded for 60 minutes. Only do this if you know what you’re doing or are willing to roll the dice with the results. The dryer can also create that marble effect (which I don’t mind), because you’ve got that wet ball of denim being slammed around the machine.
    Keep up the great work!!

No matter how many times I hear you reccomend bleach and dryer I just cant bring myself to do it.
I wear them hard for a few months then start to keep and eye on the crotch and the overall smell and greasiness. Any signs of crotch wear is an immediate wash. This is generally end game for my jeans as I dont repair. If you catch crotch wear early you can regularly wash your jeans say every two weeks and they will last if its thicker denim for a few years. Holes in other places i dont mind

My machine in the USA is not great for this; even if I stop it before the spin cycle, those lines can still happen. Very annoying. I just washed some 21oz unbranded brand and I got those lines, BUT, since I had turned them inside out, the effect was minimal. May not be visible in the long run. Not too worried about it but I would be very careful with heavier weights since they get stuck in the same position in the machine and repeated movement keeps hitting the same spots over and over.

But if you get a pair of IH in your favorite cut… that’s a great first pair. I’d recommend 25oz as the best weight for fading, but thats really heavy. Like, they will stand up on their own like a cardboard box. Try something in the 18oz range. The IH-777S-19L is a great pair of you like a tapered jean cut. 👊👊👊

Is there anyway to prevent blow out? I find it kind of stupid these jeans makers can't come up with jeans that don't blow out. We need kaizen mentality here.

I’ve ruined many jeans by using spin cycle. I guess I need to buy more pairs. 😂

Man I've put my jeans on spin cycle and in the dryer and they look totally fine. They're jeans dude, no need to treat them like dress pants!

If the spin cycle creates problems for you, you might need a new washer.

The only time I've ever had a blow out was with the one pair of jeans I wore for six months without washing. Not worth it! Just wash your jeans. Fades will come, just wear them and forget about them
