- In this video I team up with Dan Hurd and go his most expensive gold nugget claim. While we were flying the drone we noticed multiple gold dredges in the river that didn't belong to Dan. The police showed up and confiscated the tiniest amount of gold possible due to the claim jumpers hiding the stolen nuggets. As of today March 6th 2021, most of the thieves had their FMC (Free Miners Certificates) removed, and now possibly being charged. Now because this is Canada and the police don't take this stuff seriously, I think they will only get a slap on the wrist. My team and I have recovered information including their full names, several photos, and even a few fingerprints from garbage they left behind in the event there is another encounter, or if they try anything irrational after this release. I nearly always feel bad for people like that. If they could figure out something better they would, sad that this was their best. Understand how Dan would feel too. One of those no win situations. It's dumb and gets me in trouble but I would have offered them a deal to mine my claim for a legit %. Try to educate them. No idea if they would be receptive or not. Sorry man. ❤⛏

Poaching here in Newfoundland is/was a big thing anyone caught with salmon nets out or hunting things results in everything being seized, boats, equipment and vehicles. insane that they were just allowed to walk away and do it again on someone else's claim.
like Pauly said if they had a pan and were farting around for a day you can be forgiving but that kinda set up meant they're out for profit and have been doing this for sometime you don't just have a dredge lying around.

So it's been a while and I heard through Mineral Titles Branch that the RCMP didn't file any charges for theft in this case.

It's one thing to find a person with a pan and boots, as in, they were hiking around, a scoop here and there. But when you find them with all that camping gear and equipment. That was not a day trip.
The thing that is not being talked about is you don't bring that type of equipment on a "whim". They scouted and found this as a potential spot. They found enough from prior panning to warrant bringing in that much equipment.

I do enjoy the adventures you and Dan share with us. But, if doing so is going to enable criminals to find your claims and steal from you, I would rather you not share so much detail. It is sad how just a few horrible people will always ruin things for everyone.
In Western Australia claim jumpers lose all their gear. Everything gets lawfully seized by police.
I think that's the same with the US too. It's brutal how "nice" Canadian law can be 😔

I really want to move to Canada..... Had Romanian friends who moved here from there. They said they wished they would have stayed in Canada. Everything is better there they said... I've heard that from several folks.

@@trureef2319 The video was in Canada but ok. So was EVERY COUNTRY in the world. It has been a constant cycle of one group or tribe fighting another and taking their land and resources. Since the dawn of man. So everywhere is stolen a million times over so it doesn't really matter. It will all change hands again and again.

First time viewer here, I've only ever gone panning twice in my life. Even though I was a child it was relaxing while on the water and rewarding when you found even the smallest of flakes! I'm glad you guys were able to help Dan out with those poachers so he can continue to work his claim in peace!

I used to watch Pauly's video because what he was doing was interesting but the video itself was just ok. Now his video/editing/storytelling is phenomenal plus what he is doing is interesting making him definitely my top 2 or 3 youtubers of all time.

I was prospecting around my area miss read my map. Ended up on one of dan's claims. Found a way to contact him told him about my mistake. Said sorry. Never made that mistake again. There's honest mistakes. Then there's this crap
That's how you deal with it though. You just apologize and 99% of claim owners would forgive you.
Just stumbled on this, the stellar production value down to the editing & sound drew me in. Legit thought this was a Discovery or History series I'd never heard of.
The balls it takes to go out that far into nowhere and steal from strangers is insane. You’d find 100g of gold before you’d find a body.
Claim jumpers are no good that it happened to me and a friend they actually stole our dredges and camping gear we eventually caught up to them well the rest of that story is private said to say we took care of business. Story had a happy ending we came out with over 100 ounces and great memories nothing like prospecting on the river in northern California

I used to dredge there until the damn 'temporary' moratorium that lasted over a decade. Can you dredge there again? I know a good spot or two.
No dredging in California sorry to say I still know where there are pounds of gold but you can’t get in there it’s now been designated a state park

@@RedDeckRedemption Depends on your location how it is legally defined or what general rights are conferred on the owner or lease holder of the property. In the U.S. and Canada, a mineral right is real property, generally for resources at, (or on), surface level and below. Mineral rights can exist below waterways -- meaning the owner or lease holder does not have specific rights to the waterway, but does have specific rights for the earth below them. There are certain states, (I'll use Alaska, where I'm from), that do confer common ownership to waterways -- however -- that does not include mineral rights. Take, for example, the Peters Creek, (Petersville/Mat-Su Borough). Note that on both the upstream and downstream drainage of Peters Creek from the planned Recreational Gold Panning area are closed? The State owns the mineral rights to the area where recreational panning and dredging is allowed without permit and there's markers telling you where you must stop along registered claim boundaries. You can look up information specific to Alaska via Alaska Mining and Diving's webpage, (tons of links), that'll also include other states & a bit on international gold prospecting, or visit the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for further information.

@@JussTreddn Interesting point, my state, South Australia is almost all private property with mineral rights extended to the the centre of the planet (presumably), unlike other states here, but permanent waterways are actually Crown land and you can legally walk through the middle of someone's property if you have the stones. (hint, local police aren't actually good with access laws here and farmers like guns). As long as there is flowing water, we can prospect 3 metres on either side: caveat, you can use a pan, shovel, classifier and/or detector. Sadly, if you have the money, the government will allow expensive exploration and compulsory purchase land for a mining lease; the reality is they love big projects like Olympic dam and stifle little guys. Private property owners usually like to see cash before access just to test.

Being a backyard prospector, metal detector hobbies, and rock hound. I thank you so much for calling the Police. People like that destroy the fun and adventure for every one. There are plenty of clubs you can join and go out in a group or with a friend. I like what you said about some one just recreational prospecting is no big deal. (time stamp 12:00) You find a nugget or two or an nice gem stone. May be some relics and you call it a day. These people were doing this on obviously industrial scale.

Mineral trespass-Penalty.
(1) A person commits the crime of mineral trespass if the person intentionally and without the permission of the claim holder or person conducting the mining operation:
(a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation or stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation;
(b) Enters a mining claim posted as required in chapter 78.08 RCW and disturbs, removes, or attempts to remove any mineral from the claim site;
(c) Tampers with or disturbs a flume, rocker box, bedrock sluice, sluice box, dredge, quartz mill, or other mining equipment at a posted mining claim; or
(d) Defaces a location stake, side post, corner post, landmark, monument, or posted written notice within a posted mining claim.
(2) Mineral trespass is a class C felony.
That Class C felony means. Less than 25 years but 10 or more years in prison.

In the US the “claim jumpers” lose everything they brought to the claim. Charges should be pressed against them to make a point and hurt their wallet. They knew they were in the wrong and they damaged your car too.
Claim jumpers and cattle rustlers aren't killed any more, but we still don't take kindly to them.

If the gold dredgers are charged, the charge would be for " Making changes in and about a stream" the fine would be about $250.00 and possible loss of equipment. If Dan wants to be compensated financially, he would have to sue them. Given that these alleged claim jumpers are driving old wrecks, collecting from them even with a court judgement might be a problem.
They've conveniently dug a shallow grave with that dredge. Just sayin'...
When the drone captured the final devastation done, you could see just how little of the area was actually excavated. Let alone they probably left the sulfide sands not knowing the roasting process. Would make another video swooping the camp with them detectors.

The problem is you never know if the other guy is packing and the fact that laws differ significantly in different States and Countries regarding use of a weapon even in self defense. Everyone is not John Wayne.

Here if they catch you claim jumper , they take all of your equipment , you leave with nothing but a hefty fine . Why they didn’t do that I didn’t understand? Personally I would like to have seen Dan take all of their equipment including their vehicles , put it up for auction and recover some of his losses . They knew exactly what they were doing and should pay for the consequences .

Terrible thing is, these people in remote regions are your neighbours - Not some City-folk, travelling to claim jump....just slimy, criminals looking to exploit lack of policing in wilderness areas...
Good for you for calling police! I can't believe that the cops didn't seize everything and arrest those claim jumpers, though!!! I hope they got huge fines. If the cops won't do anything, I hope that Dan will press charges! You can even name & shame those bad guys on RUclips! Show their thieving faces and license plate numbers! I know you're probably too nice of a guy to do that, but other claim owners deserve to be able to recognize those jokers.

From the video it looks like they only got a slap on the hand and told to not do it again.
If they found a significant amount of gold they will be back and with larger numbers and spotters to warn them.

Dredging is banned in BC for lic miners and jumpers. The gear is legal to own but not use in rivers etc,.
The equipment is useless to Dan, it's illegal to use. That scale was to big for you average gold miner. They have done that many times before and never got caught.

Did the Police confiscate their equipment? If they are really serious about claim jumpers, seems as if you are caught red handed they should take it until the fines or penalties are paid in full to prevent it from happening to someone else. Some sort of automatic restitution for the owner should happen also and if they do not pay then sell the equipment to cover it.

They should be arrested because not only are they claim jumping, they are trespassing, polluting, and stealing. Pressing charges are the best way to stop this type of activity.
If it a fish bearing river in Canada, Federal Fisheries has the power to take vehicles, gear and levy heavy fines.

“I didn’t know,” is never an excuse. It amazes me how people think that is an excuse for breaking the law. Where I live in the US, I have witnessed that 1st hand from a fish poacher while talking to the law. Knowing the rules is a responsibility that everyone carries.
