      agree 100%. The first week I heard Mdou I felt like I entered a new timeline. I've been listening to him and Bombino and Tinariwen this past year because I haven't felt this inspired to hear something so completely new and unpredictable to my jaded guitarist ears. I'm 50 and haven't been so pleased to hear something this new since the post punk new wave in the late 70's and early 80's.

    • @weldmaghreb
      @weldmaghreb 4 года назад +86

      That's because their music is based on heritage from arabic/islamic music modes and African sub saharan rhythms, which both are big on improvisation and giving space for the soloist to be creative beyo beyond the written notes ..so the harmony follow a more flexible and an unpredictable logic to it .. and that's why the closest thing in western music to this is Blues, Jazz or Soul , specifically James Brown , where string instruments would play rythmes and break some conventional rules, or play between the standard tones ... applying western and contemporary instruments to eastern music modes becomes like a recipe to marvelous music

    I lost my mom to cancer exactly a month ago, so my wife got me tickets tonight to see this group. I didn't know Mdou Moctar before today, and I wasn't feeling like going anyway. But I wanted to show my wife that I appreciate her - so I went.
    I really enjoyed the show, but when they started this song, I immediately connected with it. I don't know what it is, but this piece absorbed me Completely! The solo tonight was even better than here. Everything about this song is amazing. I am trying to get a sense of what the words are, but the music translated so much energy, emotions, peace, pride, sorrow, and joy, all at the same time. It really is a timeless peace. I am so glad I witnessed this live. Today consider myself a Mdou Moctar fan.

    What I later realised when I got to know this musician: it is like the circle of time has reached its starting point again. The blues came from slaves from West Africa to America, there it inspired rythm and blues into rock, fuelled a talent like Hendrix... who in turn again influenced this musician in Niger. I like it a lot, already put him on "follow" on Spotify . It deserves a bigger public, very grooooovy guitar music! It is a really unique style of playing, it is like he treats the guitar both as a percussion instrument and a harp. Those flowing tones almost make the guitar "sing".

      Apparently his lyrics are about traditional values & have earned the respect of their local religious leaders, who would typically shun any western influence. And sadly I must say I think they are right to take up the music but leave the typical western rock n roll "values."
      "Mdou Moctar hails from a small village in central Niger in a remote region steeped in religious tradition. Growing up in an area where secular music was all but prohibited, he taught himself to play on a homemade guitar cobbled together out of wood. It was years before he found a “real” guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth. In a surprising turn, his songs began to win over local religious leaders with their lyrics of respect, honor, and tradition."

    Was lucky enough to see Mdou open for Tame Impala a month ago. Liked him so much I made plans to see him when he comes to DC later this summer. Super excited. His performances are Mind Blowing!
