Curb Rash Repair on Black Wheel

- How to repair mild curb rash on black wheels without using bondo. I used Duplicolor Filler Primer as well as Duplicolor Acrylic Enamel and Gloss Clear Coat.
I applied mild sanding to the wheel lip using a dremel tool and a 120 grit sanding wheel. Normal sand paper can be used if you don't have a dremel tool.
After sanding down the damage to 1/16 of an inch deep, the Filler Primer did a great job of filling in the curb rash. End result was better than anticipated.
Items used:
Filler Primer: amzn.to/2HQEUT8
Acrylic Enamel: amzn.to/2TI75Fe
Gloss Clear: amzn.to/2CMj5A6
120 grit sanding wheel: amzn.to/2FIuz8u
just scratched my new rims at a drive thru and dreaded looking at the damage but this video makes me feel less bad
Yeah, it’s the worst. Hearing the scrape then anticipating the carnage. Amazing what a little sanding and paint can do though. Good luck!
Just happened to me as well today, pretty bad because the spokes got hit too
Me literally 30min ago
Brah same! (Literally rn)

Narrow drive thru curbs.....the pain of seeing the damage
Even if it’s not the exact way I chose to repair my wheel, it’s still a useful video to watch.
There ya go! Appreciate it 👍
This really helped me. And you’re outlook makes sense they’re damaged so can never be 100% only close. Nice vid thumbs up
Marcus Jacobs exactly! Hard to get a 100% fix when you’re not repainting or powder coating the entire wheel. So far the repair has held up and I’ve got no complaints. Thanks for the comment!
I nailed a Curb this morning after spilling my coffee. Will be doing this after I get my alignment fixed. Thanx for true video
Hey man, it happens! At least you have a good reason for the incident. Most don’t. Best of luck!
How did it go
Sean A good
I was debating doing this, it plasti dipping the rims 🤔🤔
I just scratch my front passenger side rim. Watching this video definitely makes me confident I can repair the scratches myself. Thanks
Yeah man, definitely! I was surprised at how well it turned given my limited experience doing this.
I curbed mine recently after 3 weeks of purchasing the car....the worst. feeling. on. the. planet. :(
@@pukus123 it’s like dropping your phone glass side down on concrete. The worst.
@@pukus123 frr
@@pukus123just did this, and I legit cried for like 30 minutes 😭😭😭 so here I am
Haha, funny to see you working on the same AM wheels I’m about to fix up myself. Thanks for sharing!
Haha! That’s awesome! I really like them for the price and design. Hell of a lot better that the stock turbine wheels I had! Good luck with your repair!
What wheels are these I have them but I can’t find them online
A couple of suggestions. Stick old playing cards between the rim and tire while painting. Way easier than masking. Spot putty and light sanding will handle those gouges pretty well.
Great idea! Makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the suggestion 👍👍👍
Fast Fix, secret brother of Chris Fix 😉 ... Thnx, this is very helpful 👍 I got curb rash cause 2 dumb pedestrians walked out infront of me. They're supposed to look both ways and yield when traffic has right of way, but you know how it is, not too many bright people in NY.
Oh wow…that’s ridiculous. People sometimes just don’t think… haha, I wish Chris was my bro. He could do all the fixing!
Curbed the shiit outta my Jeep SRT8 and believe it or not, this method worked for me.
I can totally relate to what you said.. Looks great at night from 10ft away lol..After all my Jeep isnt a show car. Its an AWD 1/4 mile beast
Love to hear it! Haha, yes exactly man. It’s about the speed and relative clean look. Be safe out there and stomp it! 👍
Just scratched my rims three days ago. I'm definitely going to try this. At least they're my spares now, since I got new rims anyway.
It’s the worst, right?! The sound is devastating! You know exactly what it means and the result is always as bad (or worse) as you imagine. Best of luck on the fix! At least they’re your spares now. Thanks for your comment 👍👍👍
Pretty good job! Gonna have to do something like this to a rim I just got on my glossy black rim. I’m more concerned about the tire that now has some cuts around it. Stupid 18in tires cost a lot here. At least $200
Glad you liked! Yes, tires sound like. More pressing issue. 👍
Nice Job! Just bought a set of wheels that have a bit more rash than yours but will try your method. thanks for the video...
Ralph Babusci yeah man, best of luck!
You can lightly sand down the filler primer and reprime to remove those deeper gashes.
Yes, agreed. That’s certainly something you can do. Thanks for the comment!
do you know what grit I should use?
What did you do to do the final cleaning and removing resin? I literally just damaged my rim today and was dreading the damage and thinking I was going to have to buy a new rim or basically repaint the whole thing. You have made me feel much better about doing a repair.
Hello. To remove the over spray, I used xylene. It took it right off and did zero damage to the wheel / original paying. Yeah man, it sucks, but it can be fixed. Best of luck!
Nice work and very good on the details
Thank you very much!
Great video boss, time to try it, just bought my material today
Saul CF Good deal! Hope it turns out well.
Nice job! I was wondering if we could jus hit the whole rim with the clear coat. Mine seem to b dulling. From when I had them dipped on purchasing my vehile
Hmm, I’d be hesitant to do that over a dip. I’d ask the shop who dipped them if clear would be a good idea.
Thank you!!!! Seem easy enough for me to do then other video tutorials 😁
Glad to hear that! Feel free to let me know how it goes for you.
This looks pretty good man, cheers for tutorial.
You bet! I appreciate the comment!
just throw in a little paint prep and wet sanding and this video would be perfect! good job though thats a good quick fix haha
Kyle Hewitt it definitely was! Thanks for the comment!
Hey bro thankyou for this great video could i use Acetone/nail polish remover to remove the overspray? Will that effect existing paint on the wheel or just the overspray thankyou
Hello. Those should be relatively safe. I used xylene which is pretty nasty stuff and it didn’t do any damage. Best of luck!
@@FastFixRUclips thanks
Awesome video man - quick question, would it be possible to do this when the wheel is still on the car? Or would that cause the primer to not settle in the gouges properly (given that the wheel would be vertical instead of horizontally lying on the floor)?
Actually, I hadn’t thought of that, but I would tend to agree with your logic. Gravity would probably have a negative effect on the results if left on the car in the upright position. Good thought man. I’d take the wheel off and be on the safer side.
@@FastFixRUclips Gotcha I'm thinking the same, thanks for the response!
Wow. This was a very great video!!! Thank you!!
You’re welcome! Glad you liked 🤙
great video...did this today. Why did you use more filler primer in the deeper scratches?
Glad to hear you liked the video. I suppose I was okay with the way it turned out and was happy enough with the result to not spend more time applying more filler. 👍
Wow very good video. I’m about to try this on my hfp wheels
Those rims are nicer than the car!
Anthony C 🤣🤣🤣
Do you think a regular milwaukee drill will have sufficient rpms for the flap wheel? A drive through carwash effed all four of my rims in one shot. Good video also, thanks.
Oh wow…sounds like the car wash owes you rims! But no, I’d say the rpms of the drill wouldn’t be enough. I don’t think they go much beyond 2000 rpm. If memory serves I was using 4000-8000 on this job.
Acrylic Enamel Spray Paint, did you use flat black or gloss black ?
I used gloss to match the existing paint. It wasn’t perfect, but close enough.
I have matte black rims, would you recommend not using the clear coat because of the glossy finish or use a different paint color to match close to matte black, for example, flat black paint rather than glossy black? Thanks in advance.
100% use flat paint and a non gloss clear for your matte black rims. Just do your best to match the color...it’s not going to be perfect, but close enough counts on this job IMO. Best of luck
Thanks for the video bro. It reassured me that I need to go see a pro.
I think to get pro results you have to hand it to a pro. Wise move for those kinds of results. I appreciate the nice comment 👍
It looks pretty good
Thanks! Good enough for me anyway 😂👍
do black rim srar h easily? nice video bro
Hello. Yes, unfortunately they do scratch easily. And thanks for the compliment, I appreciate that! Cheers!
Great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey bro! Love the cobra style wheels. Looking to buy the same set for my fox. Tough to tell, are those 18” or 17”?
Yeah man, they can’t be beat for the $$$! They are 17”. Got them from Americanmuscle.com. Came with mounted and balanced tires too. Although you can buy the wheels only if you don’t need tires.
How long did you wait to put the rim back on car and was able to drive with it
Hello. I waited about 24hours if I remember correctly. Did a big burn out that same day and the paint held up!
Love the video very detailed.
De’Marlon M thank you! I appreciate the comment. 👍
Never in my life scratches rims never , until I got a truck and threw some 22 fuel rims on . Maybe the wide tire stumped me . Scratched the first one on the second day . 2’nonths later got the second back . Fml what’s worst is it’s the red milled fuel the Color seems like two tone
Oh damn man… yeah it’s the worst. Especially nice wheels like yours. Mine were on the less expensive side…only 17” and no complicated milling. Best of luck on those.
I scratched my wheel in a drive through because my wife was talking too much 🤣😂
Did you sand the primer before you sprayed the gloss black?
Hello. Nope, sure didn’t. I’ve had zero adhesion issues. Thanks for the question!
Hey i have glossy wheels, should i buy the same black spray that you used and the gloss clear, or can i buy the GLOSS black spray and not use the Gloss clear spray?
I used the Clear coat for a protective layer, not to get the finish I wanted. I think it’s up to the user... however, I like the idea of a protective later on the paint.
This was a real help for me... Thanks...how did you clean up the over spray from the wheel?
Glad to hear! I used xylene. Took it right off. Thanks for the comment!
Can I use regular sand paper? I don’t have that tool, what grit do you suggest
You can use sand paper, but it’ll be a lot more work. I’d argue against using human power only and try and buy or borrow a tool like the one I used. As far as grit goes, I’d match what I used. I believe it was 230 grit or near that. It’s been a few years since I did this video. Thanks for the question. Hope this helps 👍
I did try this but when putting on the last coat of the gloss for the first time it started to alergate. When reading the directions on the bottle is says to use duplicolor wheel coat. I have to start over and try the wheel coat before the gloss finish to hope it fixes it that time.
Hmm…I’ve not heard of that happening. How’d it turn out the 2nd time?
Hey man, repairing my rims also! But wanted to ask how long did u wait before removing the wrapping on the wheel after completing the task?
Hello Robert. I gave it 24hrs to cure. Thanks for the question!
Blueoyster5 thx man, appreciate the feedback! Also since the paint was dry when u removed the wrapping, it didn’t remove any of the paint off the rim did it? Trying to avoid having to repaint them again. Last do you think if I removed the wrapping while the paint is wet it will dry at the same rate, unfortunately I will not be able to have the wheels off for 24hours due to the fact I have to repair two rims
Oh, I see your problem now... honestly, I didn’t think the can said 24hrs was required. It may have been 12hrs. Regardless, I don’t see too much risk letting them dry for 12hrs and pulling tape. I don’t think removing the tape will have any effect on dry rate. Should take as long as the can says it does. Hope this helps!
Blueoyster5 thank u very much! Yes u were very helpful thank u!
I have a wide deepish scratch in the middle of my alloy that I don't think the filler will get smooth, is there anything I can use to fill the scratch and rub down?
You’re probably right. The filler won’t be able to fill a gash more than 1/16 of an inch deep. You’ll need a metal filler for that. Just google “aluminum wheel filler” or something similar and I’m sure you’ll find something. Best of luck.
@@FastFixRUclips thank you I'll give it a go!
Hi , i have put some metal filler but i wasnt able to remove it completely via 80, 180, 400 grit sandpaper by hand, since it looks uneven ...should i use sanding machine with 180, 400, 800 etc disc pads ??
Hmm, we’ll you don’t want to sand off any of the metal on the wheel, only the high spot you’re trying to get rid of. That maybe difficult, but if you’re careful you can do something that looks good. I don’t think you need the fine sanding disks like 400 and 800. Just be careful with the course grit disks and go from there. I wouldn’t be afraid to use a dremel on those spots, but not a large sander. You wouldn’t have the control necessary for a clean fix. Best of luck!
@@FastFixRUclips thanks. May be i will start by hand with 400, and go upto 600. Followed by spot putty , then primer filler....then sand again by hand from 600 grit onwards...may be go upto 2000...hope that would fix...
Oh I see, I misunderstood your first comment. You haven’t yet applied the metal filer, correct? I don’t have any experience using metal filer, but I assume it will sand away easier than the wheel itself. You may not need the course grit paper at all, but your experience will have to inform that. I think you have a good plan. Best of luck!
Nice job!
Thank you! I appreciate the comment.
Good video. But I gotta ask it took more than a blink to cause that long of a scratch. Sleep at the wheel?
Hahaha, no I parked too close to a storm drain that had a corner that stuck out. When I pulled away, scrape... it was a brutal sound...
I filed mine down primed it and paint used compound and buffed it out polish
Hello. You did it the better way! Thanks for the comment and have a great day
Impressive! Thank you 🙏
You bet! 👍
Were you able to do anything with that tape line?
Yes and no. I smoothed it out, but it’s still noticeable if you get close. It’s not perfect, but best I could do with what I wanted to put into it
Can this be done with the wheels still on the car? I just scratched my charcoal /grey-black matte rims, and taking them off would be a pain. Also do you recommend a brand color for something like that?
Skysdalimit247 I have the same question my jack is dooky and doesn’t even lift my car off the ground so I don’t really have a choice
Sorry to hear that! As far as brand matching goes, you’ll be hard pressed to find an exact match. Unfortunately all you can really do is get close. Unless you’re willing to have a custom batch made up for you. But honestly, close will be close enough. I don’t even notice a difference with mine. You can do this with the wheel on, but it will be a pain.
The real question is, how long will that paint last before it starts to peal
So far, it’s looks as good as I did when I completed the project. That video is 5+ years old maybe older. Wheels look great with no complaints.
Nice vid 👌🏽
Thanks!
Good job bro! Looks good!
Thanks!!!
can I wash my wheels fine after doing this or will the paint peel
Hello. No man, you’ll be good to wash them. Just give them enough time to cure. I’d say 48 hours or so. The clear coat will help with longevity as well.
What primer & paint did you use??
Hello. I put links for the paint and primer in the description. Thanks for the question.
How did you clean up the white residue and tape lines?
Hello. I used Xylene. Took it right off.
@@FastFixRUclips Hey i used your video to repair curb rash on my black wheel but I got the exact masking tape lines you had at the end... What can I do to remove them ? I saw you answered Xylene but I don't know what it is etc... If you can explain me that would be awesome ! Thanks !

Same thing with my new 2017 340i :(
How did it last though?
Still looks the same. This video is several years old.
Did you find two sprays of high gloss to be enough to match a shiny black rim?
Yes, two was enough. It matched the gloss of the wheel quite well.
Helped a lot man
Awesome! And that’s good to hear. I appreciate the comment 🤙
Great Job. Did you use clear or gloss clear for the finish? Trying to use your method as I hit a crub lol
Thank you! I used Gloss Clear to match the finish. Thanks for the question 👍
Could you use normal clear coat ?
Hello. Can you clarify what you mean by normal clear coat? Like the non-gloss type? If so, yes. Just match the finish of your project.
Look good to me
Thanks!
Any recommendations at to what grade of and paper I can use if I don't have a sanding wheel?
Frank M hello. I’d use 240 or so. You’ve got room for error there, so starting a little on the corse side won’t hurt. The filler primer will fill in any sanding marks, but it’s not a bad idea to smooth it out wirh finer grits.
@@FastFixRUclips thanks
Will the primer really fill up deep curb rush?
MLP.A-Len in my experience it did. As long as the rash was not too deep. You can see on the video how it didn’t fill in the larger cuts, but did fill in the less deep sections. The can says it’ll fill up to 1/16 of an inch. I found that claim to be accurate. For my purposes, it worked great.
@@FastFixRUclips I'm not that confident sanding my rims, so, If there's an easier way I'll do that instead. I'll try this one. Thanks!
MLP.A-Len well, keep in mind sanding will help knock down the larger gashes and help the primer do its job. Not to mention if there are ridges and rough areas, sanding will smooth those things out. But if you’ve got minimal damage, the primer alone might do the trick. Best of luck!
What kind of sand paper u use
I used 220 grit with the dremel tool
Do you have a link to the dremel and sanding wheels? I can't find any rotary tools under 5000rpm
Hello. I don’t have a link, but the dremel is the standard multi-use tool that you can find anywhere. Nothing special about it. You should find the sanding wheels in the same area as the dremel. Thanks for the question.
6 months later and I can’t find one under 5k either smh
How has this held up to wheel cleaner and just daily driving? Paint stayed on?
kris moe I don’t use wheel cleaner, so I can’t speak to that, but I would assume the paint is resistant to those types of cleaning agents. I only completed the fix a couple months ago, so no real wear and tear. I’m confident it’ll be a lasting repair however.
He so what grade sand paper would you recommend if I’m doing this by hand
S550 Danny I’d use 120 grit which is the same as the sanding wheel I used. I would also get a few grits more abrasive and less abrasive just to have other options should you need them. Sand paper is inexpensive, so might as well get a small assortment. Best of luck with your repair!
Blueoyster5 Yeah that was my thought, I was just wondering what the baseline should be, if that makes any sense lol. Thank you ! I’m trying it today
S550 Danny yep, makes perfect sense.
Blueoyster5 it’s done ! I gotta admit I was pretty nervous going into it but it turned out to be super simple and it looks sooooo much better
@@s550danny Excellent! I was nervous too, but the results speak for themselves. Glad it turned out well!

I got too involved with The Bachelor and could find the time...
You should have used body filler, then primer, then paint.
Samy Belmont the purpose of the video was to demonstrate the effectiveness of the primer filler combined with a small amount of sanding. Bondo certainly could’ve been used, but was not the intent of the video. Thanks for the comment.
