As someone who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes (controllable) and high blood pressure, one of the main reasons i am looking forward to relocating to the Philippines is access to cheaper fresh produce, seafood and meat. Also, not constantly exposed to processed foods and the marketing of it. Throw in a gym membership and those conditions should not be an issue.

Thank you for doing this video. I'm astounded by the selection and prices of food there. We think everything we have in the USA is good. I am looking to retire soon and will be leaving the US. Your videos are very helpful for those of us who are wondering what our retirement dollars will get us there. It's nice that some expats can go there and live like royalty but I like seeing videos that show a more realistic budget for most of us. And, it's not just about the money, as the people there seem friendly and the markets and stores are very clean. You are truly living the good life! I envy you!
Yes. It's the people and culture that have kept me here. The budget is for everyone to know exactly what to exapect. You saw the two bedroom house for $91 a month along with basic bills. When you have that covered then you can envision your options. But to truly accept a food budget it helps to see it and hear it from the vendors them selves
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Absolutely! You covered everything perfectly. I've been watching all of your videos, and your remodeling expenses were very eye-opening to me as well. Great job on this channel. Province life is the good life for a reason, very easy to live at what ever level you want eed. That was a very decent rental for the price. Even by my province standards. Good video.
For a westerner one thing I highly recommend is a vacuum sealer for meets and fish to keep it as fresh as possible. Depending on where you live it could save you from shopping as often if you have to travel far.
AWESOME video. I am excited to relocate their soon. As a member of Paralyzed Veterans of America on a tight fixed income, I am glad to discover a place I do not have to worry about becoming homeless. Looks wonderful !
This was the most amazing video on grocery shopping and finding things one would need to deal with every day life of feeding ones self or two or more. I don’t even know how to say thank you very much. I appreciate this video so very much. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Saw you over on Paul's and checked out your channel. Love the short, to the point informative videos. You cover a lot of ground without the waffle. Cheers!
Wow!!! Once again you did it. 👏 hypermart will be my higher end marker and S&R for the cheese if i have craving for western food,...while im still learning on how to budget my money in the Philippines...thank you for this info...very inspiring that there's other options in life bisides working till old age in America...

@@marichelmaltese8736 That plan has worked so well of me here. I looked every where for a few years before I decided o come here. It's the English speaking that won me over for the Philippines
Very informative, and thank you, as always by showing the variety of places there are available and easy accessible to buy your food. The supermarket wasn't a bad size at all, with a great selection throughout, that hypermarket was bigger than anything we have in the UK, you could spend more than you want to! I have seen on other vlogs that have also shown that there are many shopping areas ranging from wet markets, to supermarkets. With a huge selection of goods including imports, so you can eat what you want...at a cost but worth it if that is what you fancy. There are also road side stands where you can buy fruit, veg, coconuts. Most foreigners do not like all fillapino foods but do find alternatives, and that includes eating out, except some food is often sold cold and we do tend to prefer hot served meals The selection in the Costco store was brilliant too, you can buy all things for the home there and I would imagine the prices were reasonable for quality goods. That house was very good value for the price per month. And yes like yourself, I would paint and clean the entire house if I were to rent it which wouldn't cost that much considering the labour charges there. Unlike your place, this one is furnished and although the furniture and kitchen and bathroom is not to my taste, if that were my base and most days I spent were out and about I could live with it for the money. On a personal note, I would love to know what you mean when you say social security. Is this a benefit you get in the US that you can still get while living abroad, as you don't mean it to be the same as a pension, which you receive when you reach a certain age like 65 for instance and you can be living anywhere in the world to continue getting it. You have seen a lot of the Philipines in your two years there, and still intend to travel, do you have a favourite area so far? The humidity would be my main concern, and the mosquitoes, but I would imagine both vary as to where you are, and whether or not it is rainy season. I recently watched someone visit Bagio, I liked whatI saw but would have liked to see moremof it. It has the cooler climate which makes it more appealing although its all on a mountain so walking uphill can often be a challenge, lol. Sorry, I didn't realise just how much I was waffling on...this comment is huge. Thanks again for your vlog, so well narrated and put together by the way!
Social Security from US government is the national pension we all pay into. I haven't seen a mesquite problem here and the humidity the last month has averaged under 60% from the times I've checked. There is a lot of misinformation or over stated information about the Philippines. Half of the states in America have hotter and or worse humidity than here. I have several Baguio videos. Let me know what the think. ruclips.net/video/iT-K9sE_Z-I/видео.html. ruclips.net/video/4BibEJxtDgY/видео.html. There are two videos for you and I have more coming
Thanks for sharing this link in your comment to me on the other video. I've actually watched this video. I don't know why I didn't give it a thumbs up. Certainly did this time around Thanks again dude
Another brilliant video, thank you!🙏 That house could be a perfect landing place for someone, as you said. Get a 3 year lease and spend $2-$3k doing it up, and you'd have somewhere nice to start out from. I like your house a lot better though, but my favorite was the "2 for 1" in an earlier video that needs more work. Landing in Manila in within 48 hours, can't wait to start checking the place out for the first time!🙂 Your videos are raising the bar for other vloggers in the PH, and great to see you started memberships now too. I've got some other ideas too, that I'll mention when hopefully we can meet up for a beer or something. Keep up the good work!👍
Thanks for the honest portrayal of the simple life in the Philippines. I retired a few months ago, and after paying for Meta Care, I have $1200 left for my expenses. With the way price gouging has driven the cost of everything up since the Covid Pandemic, moving to a place like the area you live in or some other Asian countries looks better everyday 😀 😉
Hi, Ex. So fun to go along with you and see the shopping opportunities. Def an advantage being closer to the city and have access to anything you could want. The rental deals you find are unbelievable! Can’t wait to go to the Phils someday. Liked & subbed. Really enjoy your vids 👍👍
I'm pretty far out in the Providence in Bohol. Just a few mini marts, but the market is good. And the prices may be cheaper here than where you are at. Painters make 700 pesos or $14 a day here.
Thank you for noticing Jerry. There is so much generalization out there and they all feel their way is the only way. I like for people to see first hand. Did you see the little house at the end for $9! USD per month?
@@jerrywagner4690 So to me what made this nice was some one could 100% visualize not only the market but this house is also available now to rent. Like a package deal lol
Do you know if the groceries offer plant based meat products? For health reasons I can't eat meat of any kind anymore so I have become a vegetarian. Fruits, veggies and pastas and breads go along way but I do occasionally crave a burger. In those cases, I default to the plant based products. They have come such a long way. Some brands for reference is Impossible Meats, Beyond Meat, Gardein, Morning Star. Just not sure if they have made it to the PI yet or if they are marketed maybe under a different brand. Like your videos. Keep up the good work my friend. Thanks.
I think I have seen it. You should be able to get those things at S&R which is a store chain owned 40% by Costco. You might be able to look o line at their website
I eat nothing out of a can except for the occasional can of spam which I first boil in water to remove a great amount of the salt. You will get to know your neighborhood public market(s) very well and also some farmers that you can buy direct from if you are open to making friends. We avoid Restaurants 75% of the year as we enjoy cooking/BBQs.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes I got a lot of requests. I just needed a way to do it in a way I would enjoy watching. I thought the house at the end was one of the best ways to bring it all together, The rent part is always so ambiguous and this time it was exact and so the budget was able to be too
Glad to see the channel progress. Budget videos are always good, because prices are always changing, and your island may have different pricing than others.
Yes that is true. But I avoided it because so many are saying don't come or you can't live on less than a certain amount. So I figured a way to do it in a way I felt comfortable. Thank you again my friend!!
Another home run. My belief is that one should emerse themselves in the local culture. Shopping at the local markets, supporting the local economy, is the best way to do so. It's great seeing all avenues of food shopping, but my money would be better spent at the market. There are outlets that have the must, but I love the introduction to the local economy. I must also add one more thing, moving to the Philippines, remember the metric 😂.....2.2 lbs equals 1 kilo.🎉🎉🎉
Most budget videos that are made do not give a realistic picture of life as an expat or retiree in the Philippines. This video is realistic. People think they need thousands of dollars to live well here. You can live well in the Philippines with a budget of 1000 dollars. If you act normal. I live among people. Just go to the market and buy almost everything we need from the locals. Plenty of choice and fresh. Everything depends on your own behavior and lifestyle. I know expats who can get by with $600 and I also know those who can't get by with $ 5.000.My wife and i do it with $1,000 a month. Rent, electricity and internet cost us around 160 dollars per month. The largest budget is spent on food and that is around 400 dollars per month. We buy all food locally and fresh in the market. Everything above this $560 expense goes towards trips to the beach, cinema ,karaokes etc. We don't lack anything at all. We live in La Union, 70 km from Baguio in a small town. Where you as an expat or retiree should definitely stay away is in big cities. That is something for tourists and that is very more expensif .
Wow. I couldn't agree more. Your story is awesome and one not often enough told.. I have want to go video there as part of my northern Luzon series. I have made several in Baguio and have several more to go. I would love the chance to get to meet you and your wife when I get up that way.
Another great video! I will retire early in 2 years, and I plan to live 6 months in my country an 6 months slow travel SA Asia. This home base style will be perfect for me,rent a place for a year for a price of a plane ticket to Europe!
Soda and other products (ketchup etc.) in the Philippines is sweetened with sugar. In the US they us high fructose corn syrup. I think that is why it is healthier in the Philippines.
Thanks for your very honest review of the choices that are available. Once again your prices are spot on. My favorite supermarket is Pure Gold Duty Free on base because I'm on base almost every day. There is plenty of parking by the door and very few customers. There is rarely a wait in the check out. When I put my cart out the door a guy will push it to my car and put everything in the trunk. He gets P5 or P10 and thanks me profusely. For me I don't think that I would ever move from AC it has everything I want.
great video and perspective.... My goals are the same... It's My retirement My plan... and to make the adjustment in a different country on my financial terms and ideas.. Taking a slow and constructive pathway living and traveling in the Philippines and Asia... You have a very practical and systematic approach that is reasonable and doable.. This is very refreshing to see a fellow American who has his head screwed on correctly.. Instead of so many who come to the Philippines and fall for the first girl to look at him and take all his money and savings... Bravo... keep up with your video ideas... You have a wonderful way of showcasing and communicating your idea...
Thats 1 thing i cant complain about here in Central Pennsylvania we have an abundance of fresh produce n meat especially w an amish farm every 2miles😅 every Saturday they go door to door w a buggy train selling goodies for very cheap

Thank you for sharing this video. We are coming in June for good and we can't wait to shop at the public market where everything is fresh. Yes Facebook is a little better than Email. I see Facebook several times a day and can have private conversations. If I am traveling I may not see my email for several days. FB is the same as RUclips::: FB account:: Ex-Pensive_Expat
I really enjoy your channel and appreciate you teaching us about life there. What is the visa situation now? Is travel every 90 days a necessity? How often does someone who retires there forever have to leave the country, and for how long. Thanks. From the Midsouth USA
The Visa extensions are for 30 day periods if you're a tourist here. There are several types of visas. But you can renew then every 60 days up to 36 months and then you must leave for at least a day or two. So once very 3 years at this point. Thanks for your support
For myself, my wife and our 5 kids including the visa extensions, food and all the other important things like transportation, education, internet. I account for $1500 for my wife and I. Then $175 per kid under 18 in addition. This comes out to 155,330 pesos per month. This is a lot better than spending $2300 on just an apartment in Wake county NC.
probably the most helpful budget - grocery video i have seen yet. was a little worried about small sorry sorry style shopping. thanks , probably a bit of a western Question but can you get grilling pellets for grilling?
My wife and I have a house near Santa Ignacia, Tarlac. When we're there we do most of our food shopping at the local public market for our meals and the prices and quality is good. A lot of times the way that meat is presented isn't in the most sanitary manner, but it will be fresh. We buy our veggies, eggs, chicken, pork chops and sometimes even a beef at the public market and it's always good tasting and cheap. You're money can go a lot farther if you buy your food exclusively at the public markets.
Thank you for sharing and breaking down the cost, food and rent house. It seems we can live here and save lots of money from my pension money. We love to do missionary work for the Lord.
The variety of fruits are just insane, forget the regular staple of oranges, pears and apples like what we have here. Thanks for the visuals of the markets.
Your welcome. Just to name off the available fruits would not do it justice. That is why I needed to go to the market and video it if I was going to do a food budget
Another video well done, Sir! "...I usually just say 'thank-you, Karen'..." 🤣👍 More than enough selection for me if I lived in or near town. I think I'd leave that place 'as-is' on the outside & 'hide in plain sight'. Maybe fix the leaks over the patio/dirty kitchen, do a few small projects inside & call it good.
Hi Darrell. Great 👍 video with great and important information. You're the best so far, has far has showing different food shopping places for different budgets. Thanks and keep up the great work.
I'm glad you appreciate that! People kept asking me to do a budget. I felt I needed to do one everyone could relate too. So doing it this way is what I came up with
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat,..It was well done. Great 👍 job Darrell. I also appreciate you featuring less expensive houses or apartments for rent. Perfect episode for me always thought I would have to be near Manila for such stores. I plan on being native as much as possible but nice to know the comforts of home are available.
My gosh I never knew. Them grocery stores are awesome and with the little markets the food selection is much better than the USA. Great video Thank You 😊
Great video, sadly in Ilagan where I go they don't have the large grocery stores like the ones you showed, bit smaller with less selection, but things can be expensive in those stores, quite a bit more than British grocery stores. Yes everything is full of sugar and salt, even plain chips taste sugary, gross! but the markets are fantastic for fruit and veg! I get a bit annoyed when I see videos of guys saying you need at least 1500 or 2000 dollars a month over there, you and I both know that is certainly not true. If your good with money your dollar will go a long way! great video dude, i'm off to Philippines May 24 for 4 weeks!
Thank you for the comment my friend. You'll be in Ilagan when you return? I want to get up in that area even if only to drive through. I've noticed there are no roads to or along the coast there??
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Hi fella, Yes I will be going to Ilagan, I have no idea about roads and travelling there, all I know is it's a 12 hour bus journey from Manila to Ilagan!
Just watched you on Paul’s channel, another well presented and informative video, I have a house in Sta Maria Pangasinan but mostly in Australia at the moment, thanks 🫡from 🇦🇺Aus
Depends on the region. I've been to Surigao and Butuan, Surigao is very limited. Butuan is pretty good. It's like living in city with just one kroger and a couple IGAs vs a city that has 4 Walmarts and a Costco.
Yes exactly. Like I said in my video there are areas that won't even have a Pure Gold without driving 30 minutes. But they will have public markets. And the ones that don't have the larger stores won't need to worry about the upper end of their budget. They will live on even lower than $600.
Maybe start with coming for a vacation. It's the beauty of the country that brings people here and it's the beauty of the culture and people that keeps people here
Just happened to find this channel. Awesome! I am close to retirement, and wont have much of a budget. I live simply, and this would be well within my budget. I would definitely rather live in the province than in a city anyway.
We shop the local market and Pure Gold here in Baler. I have been here just a few months and already lost 10 lbs! Could of been more but i like beer its 46 pesos for a bottle of San Mig lite from our Pure Gold. A bottle Jameson cost you 923 pesos. I've noticed ingredient labels contain less here as well. If your border line diabetic a healthier life style here would benefit you!
Fun Fact: Costco is the biggest retailer of alcohol in the USA and maybe the world. When I lived in the PI, Quezon City pre-Covid, I can't remember the exact price but I lived on filet mignon and had my San Miguel delivered to my door. If it weren't for the fact my employers were assholes I'd still be there.
For one person $600 to $800 a month is reasonable. If you have two people it should be $1500. But what you all don't understand is that $1500 USD is 87,502 pesos. At the current exchange rate of 57.00 pesos per dollar as of April 16 @ 1400 hours. The reason I am giving the numbers is that there are families here that make less than 10,000 pesos a month and survive with a family of 4. If you make over 10,000 pesos a month you are considered rich here. $87,502 is enough to pay everything and have extra. You can live like a king on this amount here.
I was carful in my video to only point out what was in the video. The house @ $91 plus utilities etc add up to $241. Then there is food. I think most people make at least close to $1,000 in reality. I was showing what they could get for under $600 and took them to the market for proof. I use 55 peso to the dollar conversion rate because that is an average net after cost of conversion from Dollars to Pesos. BTW What makes you think I don't know what $1,500 converts too?? Just curious. I was asked to do a realistic budget and so I did. Starting with the food at the Public market. etc up to S&R. So rent $91 plus fixed cost $241. Food is a personal choice
What 10,000 pesos considered rich?? that is considered already below poverty in Philippines .My brother declared his salary as 10,000 pesos a month so that he can avail the hospital with zero bill in the Government hospital. If 14,000.00 pesos above then the hospital bill discount will be a of lower percentage . So mostly rich Filipinos will go to private hospital only.
One point I have to make. Not everyplace in Philippines has the selection of stores you have in Angeles Cit area. In my town I have to travel 7 hours to S&R market or take a ferry boat to Duma. I look at this as a weekend getaway then get groceries. But your video is spot on right on the money. I just wanted to point this out. Not every town is the same when it comes to Western standards.
Yes you are absolutely correct and that is your choice. We are lucky to have that freedom here. I was in a small town in Northern Sumar and the only way to get there was a 30 minute boat ride out of Catubig. I thought in my video I had made the comment that some places are so remote they would only have a public market and even the Pure Gold would require some travel. I want to get back down to the Duma area and do some more videos. What area are you in??
I had to stop the video at 11:10 and comment. Americans are NOT more health conscious!! The potato chip/candy aisles are Humongus here. I just got back from a 5 day cruise and I have never seen so many OBESE people in my life!! I work in healthcare and do MRI and yes I see a lot of them, but this was tragic. Thanks for keeping it all real. The more I watch, the more I want to go.

This was the most amazing video on grocery shopping and finding things one would need to deal with every day life of feeding ones self or two or more. I don’t even know how to say thank you very much. I appreciate this video so very much. Keep doing what you’re doing.
You're welcome my friend. Thank you for the kind words!!
We loved the way you present your video and your analogy and of course you being an optimist .
How Thank you!!

@@marichelmaltese8736 That plan has worked so well of me here. I looked every where for a few years before I decided o come here. It's the English speaking that won me over for the Philippines
Great information. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Nice to see you again. Thank you my friend
Another great video my friend. A lot more affordable than I originally thought 😊
I love it here more every day and that's over two years now
Very informative, and thank you, as always by showing the variety of places there are available and easy accessible to buy your food.
Most foreigners do not like all fillapino foods but do find alternatives, and that includes eating out, except some food is often sold cold and we do tend to prefer hot served meals
The selection in the Costco store was brilliant too, you can buy all things for the home there and I would imagine the prices were reasonable for quality goods.

From all the people that are on utube you are best down to earth and very intelligentperson
Thanks, this was a perfect breakdown of what, where and the cost to buy food. So helpful
Yes I was asked to do a budget video and realistically food is probably the biggest variable
Another brilliant video, thank you!🙏
That house could be a perfect landing place for someone, as you said. Get a 3 year lease and spend $2-$3k doing it up, and you'd have somewhere nice to start out from. I like your house a lot better though, but my favorite was the "2 for 1" in an earlier video that needs more work.
Landing in Manila in within 48 hours, can't wait to start checking the place out for the first time!🙂
Your videos are raising the bar for other vloggers in the PH, and great to see you started memberships now too. I've got some other ideas too, that I'll mention when hopefully we can meet up for a beer or something.

These videos are great. the value for money is incredible
Thank you Mark. I watched videos for a few years before I came. My videos are about the things I wished I had seen before I came
Thanks for the honest portrayal of the simple life in the Philippines.
I retired a few months ago, and after paying for Meta Care, I have $1200 left for my expenses.
With the way price gouging has driven the cost of everything up since the Covid Pandemic, moving to a place like the area you live in or some other Asian countries looks better everyday 😀 😉
It has worked well for me. I can't imagine going back to how it was. I couldn't afford SoCal any more and have no idea where I would be.

I'm pretty far out in the Providence in Bohol. Just a few mini marts, but the market is good. And the prices may be cheaper here than where you are at. Painters make 700 pesos or $14 a day here.
Yes it's the same. Some charge more and I will go by contract so if it takes them an extra day or two I'm paying them the same regardless
Very informative video, you are really helping people to make informed decisions.
Thank you for noticing Jerry. There is so much generalization out there and they all feel their way is the only way. I like for people to see first hand. Did you see the little house at the end for $9! USD per month?
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat yes I did, just a little worried about the health care, should people be worried?

You might be able to look o line at their website
informative and entertaining. congrats!
Thank you much!!
That's awesome. What area do you live? I have made many friends here and also prefer cooking my own meals
Really like and appreciate you doing this kind of video!👍
Thank you. More to come my friend
Great vid! Always wanted someone to cover this topic this well.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes I got a lot of requests. I just needed a way to do it in a way I would enjoy watching. I thought the house at the end was one of the best ways to bring it all together, The rent part is always so ambiguous and this time it was exact and so the budget was able to be too
Great video. For me you are the go to guy, when researching life in the Philippines.
What are you researching. Maybe that will give me a good idea for a video
Thank you for the kind words my friend
Well said!
Exactly. Then slow traveling with an inexpensive home base will actually allow you to travel even more
Soda and other products (ketchup etc.) in the Philippines is sweetened with sugar. In the US they us high fructose corn syrup. I think that is why it is healthier in the Philippines.
Good point!!
S&R has Australian Beef sometime cheaper than local beef, and the cocked taste is Amazing.
Nice to know!!

God bless you man.. Five kids!!
probably the most helpful budget - grocery video i have seen yet. was a little worried about small sorry sorry style shopping. thanks , probably a bit of a western Question but can you get grilling pellets for grilling?
Probably if not you can always order things. Many people order a lot of things on line here. It takes a few days but pretty reliable
Yes. It's much fresher and less expensive . One thing here though is I have never heard of any one getting food poisoning

Absolutely . Congrats on the weight loss
Hahaha.. What a great story Dr. Always good to see you
Public market looks awesome.
I love them they are so colorful. Especially if you love fresh fruit and vine ripened. Everything including meat fish etc is fresh
Nothing I've had to say was about Filipinos or 10,000 Pesos or medical?? I'm a bit confused.
Hello my friend im antonette friend in the seminar.nice video my friend
Wow!! Thank you so much!!
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat I'm in Dipolog in Mindano a short ferry ride from Duma. My wife will be back in May getting things set up for our retirement move.
@@michaelatoz580 I definitely plan to return to Duma and several places around there
Good information, thanks for doing this!
Thanks. You're welcome buddy. Nice to see a familiar face lol
wow vegetables are about 50% cheaper there than here in manila market. pork and chicken price though is the same price here in manila.
Here pretty much everything is grown with in a miles from the market
Chicken soup with a native chicken is absolutely fantastic!!
I'm from San Diego and it just seems there are more health conscious there than what I see here in the province.
Love the video, but you didn't tell us the location of everything...please advice where your house is located and where the amazing markets are. Looking forward to moving there.
Yes. The location is Porac Pampanga. in my newer videos I do mention where I am
New sub. from Old Dog. I have been living in Angeles for a year and looking to move further out. I completely overlooked Porac for the reason i didn’t expect it to have so many stores. I doesn’t look so bad at all.
Come out for a visit. I'll meet you there.
