I’m a personal experience vlogger. These are my experiences living in the Philippines. My idea is to share the adventure of everyday life and the travels I enjoy. My travels starting in my teens, the destination determined the route to get there, but the perpetual excitement was seeing what’s around the next corner. Stops along the way and just the general adventure of exploring the Philippines, the people and their culture.
Makati Lifestyle & Budget $1,200 to $1,500 per month
After eight days in Makati and BGC this series is covering the life style and minimum budget you should expect to need when living there. The idea is showing a place some people will need to feel comfortable when coming here. There are plenty of western amenities to lessen the culture shock when you first arrive. Or maybe this is the lifestyle you're hoping to find and enjoy. Please let me know what you think!!

After eight days in Makati Greenbelt area I am sharing my experiences. Also from that experiences I have come up with a couple of budgets for living in that area. In the last video I showed seven different apartments / condo rentals as an example of what's available and the price points there. You should check it out. You might be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

I spent eight days in Makati Greenbelt area. I went there with the idea to assess the area for expats who want an easy safe place to land when they come to the Philippines. Costs of living, rentals, restaurants, food etc. These two videos cover what I have found there. This video takes a look at seven rentals with price ranging between 15K. and 45K. Take a look

well is going to be tough to convicting my Filipina to live in Makati even my monthly budget is over $2000 USD a month I can hear her say " oh no Makati is too pricy " 😁
I'm sure you'll find a place that is a good fit. Best of luck to both of you.
Wow that was a quick 8 minutes, I could easily watch 20. I'm in Siem Reap (Cambodia) now, and it's awesome, but I'm feeling the Philippine pull.
I would like to experience Cambodia some time
@Ex-Pensive_Expat Just a thought. I have a perfectly good apartment here. Maybe we could swap places for a week or two. Or, I'd be more than happy to stay here and show you around, with the only small exception that my place is a studio.

Go to Angeles City and check it out. Clark City used to be Clark US Air-Force Base, see if you like it too. I understand there are U.S. retired vets around the area. Gotta place there at the Marquee Residence but I am afraid to retire there due to inadequacies of healthcare services.
I've been to Marquee many times. I was at SM Clark Yesterday. I live in Porac

I think you identified the main problem with regards to affordable living in Makati/BGC - it comes down to "temptation". The temptation to live in a high-rise condo, the temptation to eat out, the temptation to shop, the temptation to party every night - basically, the temptation to constantly spend money. This is certainly the problem for many Americans living in the US. If you live in the provinces of the Philippines, these temptations are likely to be lower, simply due to lack of easy access & availability. So, perhaps if you avoid the temptations, without making yourself miserable, living in Makati/BGC can indeed be nearly as affordable as living in the province.
My comment about temptation was 100% only about food. Like when you're walking past one of the hundreds of restaurants. The only budget I increased was the food budget from $250 in the province to $400 in Makati / BGC.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Yep, but it applies across the board. I did forget to include the temptation to buy an over-priced coffee. Most Americans seem to behave this way. Not all, ofc. But, most. Just my opinion. :)
Some people have all kinds of vices. I never try to imagine someones depravity when estimated everyones potential budget
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat lol... :)
I love these videos, thanks. Do these buildings have underground parking spaces available? If yes, any idea of the cost?
Yes Most of them do. I am not sure about the cost of renting a parking space

Okay
I think my preference is still more rural, but to change it up visiting a place as clean and nice as Makati can still be really nice. Great video. Timeline is really looking like April. Exactly on the 1 year goal!
Good Job my friend!!

Thank you Marichel. Yes, Thank you for noticing. I try to explain what it is like here financially and culturally. Then people can have real information judge if life here is for them. I only speak to my own personal experience and never about anything I don't know first hand
It really amazed me how cheap things like going to the movies were in Cebu City compared to here in the United States.

Best way to live! Very fun is good
At about the 5:50 mark, that resto is called Soban K-Town grill. They have branches in BGC, Greenbelt Makati, and a few other places. An order of the fresh pork belly Samyupsal costs 220p, and comes with 5 delicious side dishes which you can reorder as many times as you want. Sides include a very nice green salad, potato salad, bean sprout salad, sweet and salty peanuts, and Maangchi, which is similar to the Japanese Tamago, which is similar to egg frittata. The food is not only healthy and tasty but the resto also has a nice modern vibe to it. There are many other places like this in BGC and Greenbelt Makati offering good food, nice ambiance and great value 😮😋😁 There are also many high end gourmet options for those that want to splurge. Something for everyone 😊
Thank you my friend!!!
ARE YOU GETTING LAID?
This place got on my radar after watching another vlogger do "15 places to see in 2025." Your footage was great! Looks like a nice and clean area, especially for PH.
Yes It is!!
When I see the shops you show at the start of the video, I can’t help but notice the disconnect with the monthly budget mentioned in the title. Surely, Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, or Burberry, where a simple handkerchief costs over $400, don’t seem to align with that premise. It makes me wonder if there’s any real purpose to living in an area surrounded by luxury items that one’s budget doesn’t allow them to afford. It’s not so much about temptation, but doesn’t it risk building a sense of frustration over time? I mean, I used to live near Monaco, where everything revolves around luxury, real estate, mega yachts, high-end stores, and so on. Average-budget people would often visit, dreaming that one day their lifestyle might somehow resemble what they saw. Until, of course, reality hit them, like when polite security guards would gently turn them away or push them aside to make way for a VIP, maintaining a proper distance from the plebeians. Sure, Makati isn’t as exclusive as Monaco. As you’ve shown, some basic activities like dining out or catching a movie remain accessible. But there’s still a certain dissonance in living in a place where much of the surroundings don’t match the average social security budget, leaving time as your only real luxury, or at least, the time that remains for people of our age.
The temptation in my comment was simply the food in the restaurants because the aroma is everywhere and nothing more. The point is if those stores are there it should have any western amenities one could want. Same as in San Diego or San Francisco. I've never had that point of view from living in or around such establishments in either San Diego or San Francisco and they have all those same stores there.
@ That was not intended as a critique of what you said or implied in any way. Speaking personally, I have always been able to find a sense of comfort regardless of whether I am surrounded by struggle or luxury, by people or material abundance. However, I think there is a deeper question worth considering here, which is the sense of belonging we feel within a certain class or environment. This is not simply about external circumstances but about the congruence, or lack thereof, between one’s surroundings and one’s lifestyle. For instance, just as some wealthy individuals might find it unsettling to live next to slums, people of modest means might feel out of place when surrounded by extravagance, such as luxury shops in impoverished areas. These mismatches can sometimes create tension or even lead to societal issues like crime or alienation. It seems reasonable to suggest that finding an environment that aligns with one’s budget or social class might offer a more balanced and harmonious way of living. Neither too little nor too much, but something that feels proportionate to one’s circumstances. This is just a personal reflection, but it strikes me as a principle worth pondering.
I love this series of videos. My wife and I are putting our plan together to move to the philippines in the next 5-10 years. we are looking at Makati , BGC and Batangas City/Lipa (were family lives). We are trying to decide if we should rent / purchase a condo or a house in Batangas.
That will depend on the market at the time. I think I would wait There is a glut in the market at the moment

Thank you my friend. It's comments like yours that keep me motivated
Hi Darren, your computation is just assuming that a man does not have any savings and living off from monthly pension?
My assumption was no saving and only on average social security about $1,950 as of 1/1/2025. The budgets are design to give you what you need to set aside each month. Nothing to do with what a person actually spends. If your baseline budget is $1,200 and that would leave you $750 net spendable if your income is $1,950 each month. Now you can buy flight tickets and book hotels and get on with your own personal life style. Everyone is different. Some may set aside $400 a month for saving and so on
@Ex-Pensive_Expat i watched couple of your videos and just subscribed, i got your point that an americal would have a handful of budget in usd and can live well because of the capacity to pay. to your perspective, what would be the long term goal for staying in ph, is it just to live comfortably or explore other areas?

Do you have to report to the Philippine government where you live? Do you object to having to obtain an Exit Clearance when leaving the Philippines? Are you concerned about being held responsible in a road accident? I know that you take public transportation, but what do you think about foreigners being held responsible for damages regardless of who's at fault?
I think people driving need video cameras. When you apply for a visa extension / get an ACR card or drivers license they will require an address same as the US does for foreigners. The video is respected by law enforcement if you have it. Foreigners are usually held responsible partly because it's assumed they can afford it. We are a guest in their country so they get to make the rules. I do not object to any Philippine rules. I feel it's not totally fair foreigners are held responsible for damages. But like a DUI driver is alway 100% responsible. If we were not driving we wouldn't be held accountable. This is their country not ours. I feel lucky to be here
@Ex-Pensive_Expat I like to hear from expats on the ground who relish life in the Philippines in spite of the way the Philippine government imposes restrictions and conditions on the lives of people, citizens and expats alike. I can't even get a Filipina to join me in a third country because the government forbids her from traveling abroad without permission. Ugh!
There have been a fair amount of Filipnas ending up in Sex slavery. That is why the government has clamped down on that. There are 10 million over seas workers and many of them women. It may not help to know that but there is a reason for it
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat I'm aware of the vast numbers of Filipinos who are disrespected, deceived, held hostage, abused, murdered, mistreated, cheated and outright violated. It happens to many people, not just Filipinos. I'm a US citizen. I'm not prevented from travel to most places. Filipinos are held hostage by their own government. Filipinos need the freedom to run their own lives and decide for themselves.
I love your attitude, thank you.
Thank you David!!
$1,200 to $1,500 per month ??? that much there? But I think the level of comfort is significantly different right?
It's the financial center of the Philippines and very much western compared to the rest of the Philippines

Love watching your videos especially when it shows actual prices and what you get. It makes it real. How much would it cost to hire an interpreter and guide for the day? So when is the first BBQ at your place? That outdoor space just screams smokey char ribs with sticky sauce and a cold beer.
Soon I hope. Just waiting for the place to get finished
Wow that food is impressive. Thanks for sharing this with us. for now i'm just dreaming about going back there but a man can dream right. my wife is having built a 450 sq ft house on her parents land (possibly squatted land) in Zamballes and she is having it built ridiculously cheap. Shes been here with me for over 13 years. Zamballes is home for her. But man its really busy place there, at least where i stayed when i went there in Feb. 2011. i am a people watcher so i loved it. if i hadnt had a 13 y/o daughter that i thought needed me i would have stayed there. i left the US a disabled old broke down man of 43 and when i got there i was Sir Bryan. Upon arrival i soon had a beautiful 24 y/o fiance. i couldnt wipe the smile off of my face. i love the Philippines.

I would suggest people to have a 401 or something like that cause from what I hear social security could be 30% less by 2031. I question on how things will change in the Philippines over the next few years. I hear the call centers are all going to AI meaning lots of people will be out of work.
Well I know it's not working for me in the US. I will especially want to be here if it drops by 30%

hello, thank you thank you so very very much for taking time out of your day to show and share this great information to us out here!!!! Lord's willing I plains are to come there and live.... been asking the bank am unable to get the right answer about the Navy Federal Bank.... is there in the Philippines. 🎉 can you help me out!...????
Yes I think so.
Though I don’t have a Navy Federal Bank, what is important, if you plan to transfer funds from your bank to the Philippines, is to establish a remittance process. There are several remittance companies that can handle this. You can also open your personal dollar account in a Philippine bank and directly wire your money via internet from there to your Philippine bank for a service fee. You can do all of these if you have internet banking.
I googled it and didn't see a location in the Philippines
I use Remitly.
