I am happy that you are able to handle the differences in the way filipinos do things. I lived there for almost a year and I could just not get use to their ways. It is not only how slow and no respect of your time they have there, it was (is) just mostly the whole "they just don't care" attitude that I could not adjust too.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat 1 month in BGC 1 month in Angeles City 5 Months in La Union (beautiful) 4 months traveling though 9 other islands and 40 or so others places there.. It was not the Philippines that made me go back home. It was I just could not adjust to the way of filipino life. If you never live there and only watch RUclips you will never really experience for yourself if it is a place you can live.
It was frustrating for me too for a long time. But I actually didn't have a choice to leave. As it ended up I stayed in one area long enough to start making friends. Then branching out. Over time and getting to know people better I understood how and why they were that way. Life here for them was always on a slower pace so their expectations are different. It's because of those differences they can be happy while dealing with things that drive us up a wall. I still get frustrates sometimes but my inner pace of life has also began to chill. So the angst I feel now is not what it was. The trade off is I appreciate joy in a way I never appreciated. But that is from and province pace of life. The change for me has been a bit like quitting smoking Hahaha.... only over time. Changes in attitude and changes in attitude. Change for me has never been easy nor did I ever want it until I had it

Excellent video! Really opened my eyes to the fact that it will take some time to adjust to the cultural shock. Also the difference in the food culture will take some adjustments from what you're saying Now, as for the "trolls", and their comment on your sunglasses, you can simply laugh at them spending "mucho" dollars to get something that do exactly what your 90 peso glasses do. A fool and their money are soon parted. In some future videos i would love to find out more about the food culture and possibly info on your food choices as they may be more in line with my own tastes. Thanks for everything you do on this channel, Cheers Ross.

Hey, I've just recently found your videos, and I've been enjoying them so far. I laughed when you asked if anyone has seen a Filipino restaurant. There a three within 10 miles of my house. I really like Filipino food, but there are some things that aren't for me, we all like what we like. I've been to the Philippines a couple of times already, getting ready for retirement in a few years. I'm glad you are enjoying your retirement, can't wait to be able to say the same thing!
Look me up when you get here. If I had known about Philippine restaurants I Amy know more about the food before I came. My living GF in San Diego was from the Philippines and we never went to eat at one.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Thanks, I'll be sure to look you up. I've dated a few from the Philippines, and we never went to a Filipino restaurant together either. LOL. Keep on enjoying the good life in the Philippines.

Hi Theresa Nice to see you again. I am working on the next one now. I will be doing some a little more plain to show the everyday normal scenery which to me is also fascinating.
Great video explaining your everyday life there in the Philippines! I enjoy your content! Keep it coming and relax and have fun! Take care and God bless!
Each video you make gets better and even more informative than the last one, and I would never have thought that could be possible, so thank you very much again! I loved what I was seeing, and appreciated every word you said! I am so similar in the way you describe yourself of how you were before you came to the Philippines.....except for the brand name items, I have never wanted brand named stuff as it was out of my financial reach and I was okay with no name stuff. I have collected many items of unimportant value or worth, because I struggle to throw out. Don't get me wrong, I am not a hoarder, I just have some furniture I bought over 40 years ago and some from twenty years ago, I just don't replace things for the sake of wanting an up to date trend I think it goes back to everything was so hard to attain in the first place , so it is equally hard to get rid of. I need to become a minimalist and to find the courage to do something about my 'existence' in the UK. I cannot wait for your food video, as once again I agree with all you say fatty meat, it is not for me, neither are intestines or chicken feet, so it will be interesting to see where you buy food and what you make...as you say we have to eat at least twice a day. Looking forward to seeing you again soon, take care.

Also I am always very open to suggestions so let me know and time you have an idea my friend. Maybe the type of videos that will help encourage others to come experience for them selves. See there Nicola because of your comment I think I'm getting a general idea of what could be one of my best videos. Thank you again
Adaptability is the main quality required, many people seek a western lifestyle in a lower cost country like the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and so on, or expect to be able to live the " holiday lifestyle " because they've been there once or twice in their life and quickly find out it is not sustainable. For me it looks like you've adapted well and live thoughtful and within your means and asess everything on what value it adds to your life and needs. You soon find you don't need much for true happiness and a balanced life, certainly not " things " that often just become a liability rather than enhancement, love your choice of lifestyle with experiences over materialism and time to emerse oneself in a culture different than our consumer based Western lifestyle, keep it up ❤

@@KuyaStorm I would ask an airlines that question as you're looking to buy tickets. I've always liked butcher shops, farmers markets, and Fair food...any Ray Bans I've ever owned disappeared somehow. $1000 a month will allow a person to survive almost anywhere in the world, but in the Philippines, that makes you middle class, with all the comforts. Great vid.
Yes thank you Larry. And part of that point is you don't know what's waiting for you until you're here a while. Hey that's a good topic for another video. Thanks again my friend
When I was a kid, we would gather at my grandparents farm in the fall to take apart a cow and turn a couple of pigs inside out. (make sausage) The pork cuts here are different, to accommodate the way they cook. The beef looks like six people with machetes surrounded a Carabao and kept hacking until it was in chunks small enough to sell. They never developed the production and processing infrastructure needed to produce a tender, juicy, steak. Why would they if there was no market for the finished product? You know you're dating a province girl when you bring home a live chicken and she starts thinking in terms of "rice? or noodles?" instead of names for the new pet.🤔
I also grew up in LV, went to Montgomery JR Hi, and then to Kearny High School and SDSU. This was during the 60s and 70s. Darrel did a fantastic job landscaping my front yard where I live in Carmel Valley now, before he retired. My front yard is the envy of my neighborhood. He put his heart into it, just like what he does today in the Philippines. I am not surprised.

Thanks for the great info! Seeing I only eat meat, eggs, and very limited veggies (no carbs/fruit/sugar) guess I will have no problems adjusting to the diet lol.
Another good video. Something that struck me watching this video and it may seem silly. Many expats talk about how MUCH you need to live on. Its never how 'much' you need to live on. I guess my interpretation of that is, being a minimalist. Acquiring things is not the key to happiness, at least for myself.
I actually try never to say "you, us or we" in my videos because that's what leaders do. I see myself maybe as an example and only about myself. As in my budget video. People can see for themselves the costs or price points they would choose giving themselves their own personal budget not mine exactly. Because unless you made all the same choices as I did my total would be nearly irrelevant in your situation. That's why I showed the actual markets and actual prices. Then you're able to do your budget as you would make your choices for you, your family or what ever
Next week I will be returning to have a 3rd Skin cancer removed. I have a large head ( 7 7/8)and it's the most comfortable hat that covers my head including my ears.
Less stress and minimalism is just what i need in life and really looking forward to a diet video, as a bodybuilder who eats a high protein healthy diet its going to be a challenge to try and find the ingredients for that in PH.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat Im thinking mainly frozen lean chicken breasts, fish, beef and im big into yoghurts and low fat dairy products. It seems these are mostly found in imported supermarkets? But as long as you can get animal proteins and vegetables any diet can be put together.
It does take a while to get used to the country its not for everyone its a developing country that's not a criticism of the Philippines. But a lot of things are not the same as living in a developed country all countries have their problems but i still say the developing world has a lot more issues that's not to say you can't have a good life in the country but you just have to accept the country for what it is.
Absolutely correct my friend. That is why I suggest people come for an opened vacation. Then just do a slow journey as long at it's interesting to them. If not just head back home with an interesting adventure as memories
Exactly. I need sometimes to remind my self I am retired and don't need to stress for time. You still live in Angeles? Do you ever got to The Drake or Far East Papi's?
@Ex-Pensive_Expat Sure. But I'd rather not be on camera if that's OK with you. Lunch time is best for me on a Tuesday or Thursday. July 8th I'm travelling to Palawan and will be there all week. So sometime after that.
You're right.. smoking and beer is a huge cost factor.. Finding local foods you like to eat is a big help.. I cook and I can eat any food ever I have encountered. That helps.. I can do 90 plus degree weather also with a fan or 2. Big help. Public transportation is no problem. Just mosquitos and Flys in my house would be a pain. 😂
No mosquitos in my house. Flys occasionally but rare. Just keep the dishes clean and take out the trash. No problem here with bugs of any kind. Much worse in the states than I have found here. I'm from San Diego
This was a big concern for me also, but so far I haven't found mosquitos or bugs to be a big problem at all, hardly ever see one. But rainy season has just started, so I guess the real test will be over the coming months. I've asked many locals if they've ever had Dengue Fever (one of my concerns) and I haven't yet met one who has had it.
I never asked if they were certified. I would ask around and get a referral . I'd give them a small job and if they did good then I would give them more. Or I would see them doing a job then walk up and ask them. Yes the construction here is basically the same type.
I will be coming from a week or two in Thailand. Depending on available flights it could be Cebu Maktan, Manila or maybe Clark. I've got a lot I'd like to talk to you about relating to comparative lifestyles.
lol same as me for the food, I’m like, don’t chop up the chicken! No fat, no bones, try to just cook for myself when I’m in the Phil’s.. if you ever find a pasta sauce that’s not horrible, let me know what ingredients you buy there… please.. lol Hope to get a chance to say hi when returning later this year.
You can be laid back anywhere but it’s harder when everyone around you is in a hurry 😂 This morning I had some pineapple juice from the Philippines! I’m in the US and this morning I ate some figs from Mexico, pineapple juice from the Philippines in a cup made in China.
I have heard the phrase many times here, and other videos; "....in the province" What does that mean since the maps don't represent your area as a province. In Canada we have our provinces which are easily distinguished from the others. Thanks bud.
Can you get good quality venison, goat, rabbit, beef for a reasonable price? I don't mind cooking if I get a night off a week. We hunt a lot here so you can't get any more organic and free range.
There aren't any deer to hunt in the Philippines. You can get rabbit and goat but it isn't dirt cheap. Quality beef has to be imported and it's expensive. Local chicken, and pork are comparable to prices in the US. Seafood is abundant and cheap, it's where you'll see a great value.
Well when you're retired you get every night off. lol. Yes you can get all of those fresh or just buy the animals live until you're ready. Now that's fresh. The meat is still warm as they're handing it to you.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat bit of home kill, fill the freezer. From all the wild meat here that would be the biggest culture shock. Can't have a whole animal for $3 with a days work

You and Calvin are a big help to hundreds of us. Both of you caution us to leave the US behind, remembering that a lot of it is inside us.

I love your perspectives and your videos. I appreciate how you show the people and the culture. At 44 with the option to retire at 45 year old. Im very intrigued by the minimalistic lifestyle. Quite possible, ill be reaching out soon for a good living space to fix up

Really great video, cant agree more, its so affordable to live their, almost anyone one with a little ambition can create a online income and live their. I have the time of my life when I am living their, on less than 1k, and have been doing so sense my thirties, I will soon be back so enjoy your insights and videos, thanks.
Excellent video! Really opened my eyes to the fact that it will take some time to adjust to the cultural shock.
Also the difference in the food culture will take some adjustments from what you're saying
Now, as for the "trolls", and their comment on your sunglasses, you can simply laugh at them spending "mucho" dollars to get something that do exactly what your 90 peso glasses do. A fool and their money are soon parted.
In some future videos i would love to find out more about the food culture and possibly info on your food choices as they may be more in line with my own tastes.
Thanks for everything you do on this channel,
Cheers

New subscriber here. Love your video's! More power to you if you can thrive on a small budget. Myself with my asawa have a much higher budget due to wanting imported foods, going out to eat frequently, wife having a huge budget for the market and gas and upkeep on a truck. Love that you respond to all the comments and looking forward to your next video.
Thank you Randy. There is nothing wrong with a big budget here. That's great because your money does go a lot farther here. Yes sir!! Good to see you again my friend. The cooking video incoming soon

Agree with this post. Food vid coming Darrell ???? Wow can't wait. And also show the food you like on the outside as well.
It is though a weight is lifted off your shoulders when you get rid of stuff that you've been holding onto. Then your new journey can begin...

Mr Brown you made my day. Thank you

Great video Brother! Looking forward to your next one.
I'm working on it now my brother!!
You soon find you don't need much for true happiness and a balanced life, certainly not " things " that often just become a liability rather than enhancement, love your choice of lifestyle with experiences over materialism and time to emerse oneself in a culture different than our consumer based Western lifestyle, keep it up ❤
Thank you Dennis. Your comments are always nice to see! Thank you again my friend!

I've always liked butcher shops, farmers markets, and Fair food...any Ray Bans I've ever owned disappeared somehow. $1000 a month will allow a person to survive almost anywhere in the world, but in the Philippines, that makes you middle class, with all the comforts. Great vid.
Exactly my friend!!
Thanks for the video. I agree, in that you make your life better or worse depending on your attitude.
Yes thank you Larry. And part of that point is you don't know what's waiting for you until you're here a while. Hey that's a good topic for another video. Thanks again my friend
thx.
YW!
Awesome video, great discussions.
Much appreciated!
Hi there. I grew up in Linda Vista and graduated from Kearny. I miss going to the Family Fun Center in Clairemont.

Exactly!! And all plentiful and fresh daily
Just curious to know why you'd wear a touque/hat in the tropics ?
Next week I will be returning to have a 3rd Skin cancer removed. I have a large head ( 7 7/8)and it's the most comfortable hat that covers my head including my ears.
Less stress and minimalism is just what i need in life and really looking forward to a diet video, as a bodybuilder who eats a high protein healthy diet its going to be a challenge to try and find the ingredients for that in PH.
What exactly will be hard to find?? I will check for you. You can order some supplements on line

Yes patience, patience, patience while driving here in Angeles City. I Tell myself I'm not going to work or anywhere important so what's the hurry.
