I remember back in SoCal when I would see Asians driving around in a brand new, fully loaded Mercedes Benz & BMW’s while living in an apartment complex. They love to show off and live beyond their means! I could never understand 🤔
Most Filipinas loves to have everything expensive here in California. They also show off their wealth when going back home as well. My Filipina wife dressed nice and I would as well. When we went to her area back home, she was dressed like a millionairest, I wore jeans, a nice shirt, but was low key!! So, I would agree, that 97% of Filipinas/Filipinos, want their people to believe that they are living large. Most, are seriously struggling here, and some 2 BR apartments have 18 - 20 people living together!!
@@AllenLuedemann They really should get out of California and stay out of New York. Those two places are way too expensive. I would never live either one of those places because of the cost of living. In California the cost of a little house starts in the million dollar range. Why pay that kind of money for a little place? As I say, it is much better to look poor and have money in your pocket. You don't have to look like you are homeless but it is best to never to try to look rich. Most old rich money almost never looks rich. Treating people with respect, as in 'treat others as you would like to be treated' is important. It is different from respecting a person for who they are. Some people we treat respectfully but we could not respect them for themselves.
Also one thing I learnt here in Portugal, which of course is obvious, people need to know how to receive (nicely). If they don´t recognise generosity then you are an atm
Hi Paul, I finally got time to sit down and watch more of your videos, and I thought I saw a notification about John coming back? Was I seeing things or was it taken down? :)
Paul I absolutely agree that pretending to be poor weeds out the gold diggers. So " you can only have the small yacht babe I cant afford the big one" 😊
Respect must always be earned. Some confuse respect with civility. You can be civil to someone you don't respect, and you probably should be as a rule. But you shouldn't automatically respect everyone you meet because many will not deserve it. This also means you shouldn't expect instant respect from others because you may not deserve it.
It's kind of hard being a guest in the Philippines when some here are not respectful to others by nature. Especially with those who do not respect your retiree budget. Ouch.
There's different types & levels of Love.. and Respect & Love "are not necessarily 2 different things" .. If your looking for "Respect" or Love for that matter, look no further than "the mirror" ..
Paul, perhaps you can make a video on all things ID. Do you still have a U.S. license? How do you renew? Do you have a Phillipines ID? Etc…how do you drive? International ID? What’s best? I can’t imagine giving up a U.S. license
Hi @joeldchenoweth Thanks for the suggestion! We'll consider making an ID-related video in the future. For now, our focus is on daily life here. Thanks for watching!
Regarding the shoe segment, personally I think, if a date states 'those shoes are really cute', just agree or disagree: yep, they are cute' and leave it at that. Nobody has the right to expect a date to buy them stuff. If you want stuff, the answer is: get off your duff and work and save and then buy it yourself. Keep it simple.
In sales the women commenting on the shoes is doing a "trial close" to see how you react, the answer Paul suggested was perfect it shows you are not a tight wad but not just free with your money. After all isn't that what dating is about,an effort to find out about each other
I just read an article where some 22-year-old Playboy model says Leonardio DeCapio is too old and too weird for her. Not sure how that relates to this video, but I thought I would share that.
The foreigner has created the new filipina, especially the retired foreigners, when it comes to respect, however, your topic was well presented. Women learn from each other and will see what a foreigner can provide. She has learned the technique that if he does not give right away, she must be patient, afterall he is a foreigner, they have money of which, compared to what a Filipino earns to them is translated as rich. An older man will be more likely to give to her just to have her by his side and his reasoning as you mentioned, it's only a few bucks, but to her that is more money that she could earn in a month. On RUclips, there are filipinas who are earning more views than the foreigners and still through admission, looks to the foreigner boyfriends for an allowance. It remains...............she has what he wants, he has what she wants, the foreigner will learn how to manage his finances when he feels that need to provide financial boundaries.
Self evaluation tends to have either downward evaluation or upward contacts. Respect in that sense is when someone wants to gain information or affiliate which is the case when a foreigner from a developed country goes to a developing country which is a great self esteem boost. However if the foreigner trips up by giving information that is false once verified or after affiliation gets to be found out not to be a nice guy where the foreigner keeps saying no. So then its a pavlov dog kind of situation where one drip feeds. Although the alternative is if its a constant downward evaluation sense then its time to pack up and get out of the place.
This is a tough one for me. When I am dating a girl and she has a problem which can be fixed with relatively little money (example - a phone which needs a new LCD which will cost 3,500 pesos) my inclination is just to spend the money and fix the problem. But then, as you said, once they realize that you are willing to help, the requests start coming and they never stop until you end the relationship. As you said, the solution is not to make that first offer.
even in America rural values still exist , "putting on the dog " is considered putting on airs and is generally viewed as " trashy " behavior , even picking up the check is reserved for a tit for tat, head of family , or boss position , other wise people will supplant when your not around, we have wealthy people in our communities but they dont put on airs where they be seen inside the county line, they generally keep lake homes out side and store their sport cars there so that people with traditional values dont get offended
Hi @hayseedfarmboy Interesting cultural differences. Here, we value humility and simplicity, even among wealthy individuals. It's refreshing to see genuine folks living beyond material possessions.
It is always better to look poor and have money than to look rich and have no money.
It's also better than to look rich AND have money.

I don't know what's going on with my life Paul you just took another 10 minutes and 19 seconds from my life from my day what's wrong with me I've been doing this for years watching your videos.... How's your father doing Paul.. he has a big birthday coming up I hope you're back there for it..
Hi @christophermeaney5485 Thanks for watching! Dad's doing okay, we'll be thinking of him on his special day.
100%
Welcome new crazy people🎉
Damn Paul, watched an old video with you in it, from I think two or three years ago. You look 10 years younger now!!! hahahaha, Obviously enjoying life there.
Hi @mxlarge6915 Thanks for the laugh and the kind words! We're loving life here indeed!
Hey Paul, you hear alot today about hiw people deserve respect. In my opinion, if you want respect, you must earn it!
Nobody deserves anything. Especially these days. It’s one of the biggest problems in the US.
Hi @markleaman8313 Well said!
Now this video Sir is a very good one, I hope the folks coming here see it and understand. I do immigration for these guys that come over here for a fiancee or spouse and you cannot believe how many of them are very rich and have nothing but money at least that is their story, Until it comes time to do the I-134 affidavit of support and we need to see their tax forms and get an employment letter and the bank letter only to find they flip burgers at burger king and have been on the job for 6 months.
She said "I really like that style of shoes" !
I said to the sales girl "do you have those in men's size 13, I could use a pair" .
Hi @kmilton1593 Thanks for watching! We ended up getting them for me, they're super comfy!
Treating people with respect, as in 'treat others as you would like to be treated' is important. It is different from respecting a person for who they are. Some people we treat respectfully but we could not respect them for themselves.
Hi @susanneashton1340 Well said! Respect can take many forms.
Also one thing I learnt here in Portugal, which of course is obvious, people need to know how to receive (nicely). If they don´t recognise generosity then you are an atm
Hi @user-gq5kc1ow7k We've experienced that too - it's amazing how a small act of kindness can go a long way!
It all goes back to Mrs. Hermading's kindergarten class for me...The Golden Rule. Well, and my parents of course.
Old Dog came up with the phrase
"REAL" expacts.
Refering to forigners that are :
Respectful
Expats
And
Loving
Pretty much sums it up ❤
AGREED 👍 😊
Hi @-goldfinger2695 Love it! That's a great summary of our community!
Hi Paul, I finally got time to sit down and watch more of your videos, and I thought I saw a notification about John coming back? Was I seeing things or was it taken down? :)
Hi @surfdaze Yeah, John's return video got taken down by mistake. He'll be back soon, though!
Paul I absolutely agree that pretending to be poor weeds out the gold diggers. So " you can only have the small yacht babe I cant afford the big one" 😊
Hi @Alexinthephilippines Love it! We're all about being honest and authentic here. Thanks for sharing!
Of course.Voltaire.....your wants stop when the rights of other people start
Respect must always be earned. Some confuse respect with civility. You can be civil to someone you don't respect, and you probably should be as a rule. But you shouldn't automatically respect everyone you meet because many will not deserve it. This also means you shouldn't expect instant respect from others because you may not deserve it.
It's kind of hard being a guest in the Philippines when some here are not respectful to others by nature. Especially with those who do not respect your retiree budget. Ouch.
Hi @clarkgaither Well said, I couldn't agree more. Respect is indeed earned through actions and character.
Do we deserve respect? No. The basic upon which we're on pedestal is this 50X exchange rate! It's really unfair to them & us spiritually.
Great video and great topic Paul! I am trying to figure out how many couch covers you have lol 😝
Hot fun in the summertime.
Hi @oliviar267 Three, counting the one on our favorite spot!
There's different types & levels of Love.. and Respect & Love "are not necessarily 2 different things" .. If your looking for "Respect" or Love for that matter, look no further than "the mirror" ..
Hi @enzos711 Wise words, thank you!
Money doesn't buy respect. You have to earn it.
Hi @timoybaker Well said!
After all isn't that what dating is about,an effort to find out about each other
Hi @reflect4627 Thanks for sharing! We'll keep it real and straightforward on our channel!
Good insights on the filipino culture...please share more😊
Hi @kitkatz9984 Thanks for watching! We'll keep sharing our experiences with Filipino culture.
Respect is good😊 You will always be a foreigner, but still "act" like a guest the best way you can.
Hi @watersbey25 Thanks for the advice! We'll definitely keep that in mind.
Hi @valeriek5020 Appreciate your thoughtful insight on cultural dynamics here in the Philippines!
Hi @italogiardina8183 Thanks for sharing your insightful thoughts on self-evaluation and respect in our community!
Hi @pcabraham2580 Understood the importance of setting boundaries early on!
even in America rural values still exist , "putting on the dog " is considered putting on airs and is generally viewed as " trashy " behavior , even picking up the check is reserved for a tit for tat, head of family , or boss position , other wise people will supplant when your not around, we have wealthy people in our communities but they dont put on airs where they be seen inside the county line, they generally keep lake homes out side and store their sport cars there so that people with traditional values dont get offended
Hi @hayseedfarmboy Interesting cultural differences. Here, we value humility and simplicity, even among wealthy individuals. It's refreshing to see genuine folks living beyond material possessions.
