  • DirtFish went to Wales to sit down and chat with the man leading Toyota's charge this season. Step forward Elfyn Evans.
    It’s one of the most entertaining and revealing interviews ever with the Welshman. We talk about how he went from being too slow in a Nissan Micra (his words) to fronting the Toyota team. We ask him about his favourite sandwich and the WRC’s new points structure. He reveals his favourite Tom Jones song and his innermost thoughts on what he watches on television. Want to see more? Let us know!

    On the surface, there is no fundamental difference between the WRC of today and the WRC of the past. So, some _really_ big problems had to have arisen for the WRC - a series that was seeing Group B crowds both long before and long after the days of Group B itself - to be so down in the dumps. The problem with this working group, as ever in modern professional motorsport, is that they don't seem to want to engage with the real solutions to rallying's current problems.
    It's not "Sunday driving" that's making the WRC increasingly easy to miss: you can barely tell the difference between the fastest and the slowest Rally1 cars as is because they're all FLYING. And manipulating the points system to make title fights more of a toss-up is just a cheap trick NASCAR would be proud of (not a compliment).
    From an outsider more acquainted with circuit racing, one suggestion: allow more variation in how long the rallies and their stages are and bring back the night stages. No two rallies should seem alike, and they should all, at their core, be endurance tests. They don't all need to be complete marathons, but there should be some, and frankly the Safari Rally won't be deserving of the name unless it's 1000km long, like it used to be. Size directly correlates to spectacle, and a rally that goes from one border to the other and covers absurd distances over punishing terrain is an inherently spectacular event. A rally should be a journey, not 300km of dashing in and out of the service park.
    There isn't an Audi v. Lancia movie happening because Group B was a singularly special class. No, Group B - like Group 4 before it and Group A afterward - simply had the good fortune of existing in the time period before rallying started to abandon what made it unique. Shorter, more homogenous, less like rallying and more like regular old circuit racing with extra steps. It still stands out, but there's a reason the past gets so much more respect than the present.
    The WRC loses something intangible but irreplaceable the more it tries to be like everything else: a sense of adventure. Cars aside, that's the key.

      I come from a circuit racing following too and when I was looking up this year's WRC calendar, I noticed all the rallies are pretty much a Grand Prix distance. It seemed odd to me they were all almost the same in length. It also occurred to me then that what F1 completes in an hour and a half, WRC takes 3-4 days to complete. Yes, terrain is tougher, slower speeds, they travel more than 300km in total to connect between stages, but even with all that it made WRC look a lot less impressive than it really should be.

    Excellent interview, Elfyn is right on the new points system, it's rubbish. I was never keen on the powerstage points in the first place. However the obvious solution is that the 5 power stage points are awarded for fastest over ALL of Sunday and leave the rally win at 25.
    But as Eflyn and other posters say, that is not the biggest problem, only 8 top line cars is.
    How come Fiat runs 2 F1 and a WEC team, but has no presence in the WRC. Similar story with Renault and Pug. Biggest mistake with these cars was the FIA supplied Hybrid.
    Second big problem, to many similar events, Poland, Latvia and Finland back to back is stupid. Why no Aus or NZ, it's false to call it the World Rally Championship.
    Dirtfish can dream away about a US round, it'll never happen as these cars are not sold in the US. Same as so few follow Nascar in Europe, they are irrelevant (t)here.
    Maybe the FIA president should ask the people that matter, us fans what we want, because in the case of the WRC and F1 it is clearly rubbish. Thank god for the WEC and Ferrari's win last June.

      Crowd-pleasing idea, but falls apart when one looks at the situation in detail. The hatchback segment doesn't have many cars left in it to begin with, and all of them have turbocharged inline-4 engines (or the odd inline-3).
      There is no such thing as a revvy, 9000 rpm sport compact anymore - even Honda's moved to turbos since the FK2 Type R - so a modern class of F2 kit cars is a no-go. And given the large, relatively diverse fields of genuinely fast cars in R5/Rally2 fields these days, I'm not really sure what it could learn from the early 90's WRC that would be of any use.
      This isn't to say that bringing naturally aspirated machinery back to rallying is impossible. It's just going to have to come from a different class: R-GT, which everyone forgot about because the droney turbo-4 Alpine A110 is the only car present.

    What an amazing interview! A guy that talks so little, but clearly has a lot to say when asked in a right way and when he's feeling comfy. Well done.
    Also, completely agree with Elfyn's views on the new points system as well as the idea that Rally2 should become the new Rally1. The new points system is the daftest thing in the world and will cause more damage to WRC than all other rule changes in the last 30 years combined. And I personally find rally2 cars boring and certainly will never watch them live. What a way to kill a sport, complete morons running rallying these days.
    Anyway, thanks for a fantastic interview. Would be amazing to see something like this with other drivers too...

    The future of rallying is definitely a tough question since manufacturers are continuing to move towards massive pig SUVs as their main product lines. It's absurd that these SUVs are always marketed as "outdoorsy" and "rugged" but are totally unsuitable for the basis of the most outdoorsy and rugged motorsport. I hope legislation will swing against SUVs and we'll see a revival of real cars. That aside I think the biggest issue is that the promoter needs to make better highlights available to the public on RUclips. I always get people asking me where to find highlights and they are never satisfied with what's available. People want to see longer highlights that are easy to find on their feeds.

      @bett431 7 месяцев назад +6

      The Puma is an SUV(which is the big advantage of the space-frames that everyone forgets btw, manufacturers can scale down SUVs into competitive rally cars) and I m also not sure if a format change really helps, because in the end a f1 race is less than 3 hours, you cant shorten a rally to something a fan can watch on a sunday afternoon anyway. An after-movie for each event, followed by the live power stage might help more.

    • @Rallyman2222
      @Rallyman2222 7 месяцев назад +1

      Using silhouette SUVs will kill the sport. They’re too big, rally cars are small to medium sized nimble cars. Rallying will lose all its fans if that happens, but sadly I can see that happening.

    • @Rallyman2222
