  • You have damaged your carbon bike and need a fix? I like to show you easy methods to repair carbon bike frames. In this video I have to fix a chain stay and I have to clean and prepare the frame for an SRAM eTap. I close cable guide holes with carbon fiber rods and laminate the chain stay with unidirectional carbon fiber to fix the damage caused by the chain.

    Thank you for posting this video, I had some chainstay damage but had it repaired by a "professional" and recently my chain took another bite out of the chainstay. Found out the previous repair was not very good. I was expecting to see carbon but saw a lot of bondo and carbon. I used your same techniques from this video and had great success. I tapped the repair with a coin afterwards to check for solid adhesion and thorough epoxy wetout and found no dull thuds. Just as you say, a pretty easy repair to do at home. So thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips, very appreciated and helpful! (My paint and clearcoat work leave much to be desired, however..)

    Martin, I am using your excellent tutorials to repaint my 2008 Cervélo RS frame. When I took the components off, I noticed some damage to the BB caused by the chainring rubbing on the fame. Your tutorial on how to repair this damage is extremely well done and provided perfect instructions. Thank you for taking the time to create this instructional videos and for posting them for all to see and use.

    Have just sent a frame away for repair, but with these tips might just try myself next time. The shrinking tape and fast-set epoxy are great tip.
    One question with resins - are the slow set epoxies more durable than the quick set, or just useful for different things? I repaired my hockey stick a few years ago and was advised to get the slow setting epoxy as it cuould withstand more and would last longer.

    - use a wood glue utility brush instead of ear swab
    - mount a heat lamp bulb or two in a ceramic socket to ceiling above workbench to aid in epoxy wetting out CF, works great aircraft composite project
    - put layer of dacron peel ply on top of finished layup then cover with shrinking tape, when dry and peeled off has nice mat finish

    I have the same issue on the same area in my frame but mine looks like more structural damage (chain got stuck, I got pissed off...the rest is history) to the point that the carbon can be moved by putting pressure with the finger. I suppose that's not a DIY job...well put it this way i wouldn't be very confident going down hill knowing that I stuck some small pieces of Carbon myself....,😰.
    So the new frame is coming. Good thing is I have seem your DIY paint job and it's gonna look great! 👍

    This was absolutely the best DIY video I have seen yet! Ausgezeichnet!! Just out of curiosity... could you use body filler on minor scratches and areas where the damage is too small for the tape or do you just use the resin?

    • @dbrassell1
      @dbrassell1 2 года назад +1

      When I've done this, I mix the epoxy, then cut small pieces of carbon fiber (roughly 1mm long) and mix it with the epoxy. Then apply to the scratch/ chip. Not really for crack in the carbon, but more as a filler. It sands, primes and paints well. Not sure if this the best way, but has turned out well for me

    Excellent tutorial! The only issue I seems you should be using a much slower curing epoxy - slower cure rates ultimately mean longer polymerization chains, which makes for a much stronger epoxy and therefore repair.
    Using a fast cure plus heat does not lend itself to good long term strength of repair.

How do you know how much paint/epoxy needs to be prepped around the existing damaged carbon area in order to obtain a strong enough bond with the new carbon/epoxy being applied to maintain the strength needed, especially in high stress areas like the bottom bracket? And, do you try and match existing carbon fiber properties like low vs high modulus when making repairs?

      Besides reference to UV protective resin, i've read folks using "marine-grade epoxy resin" and other resin's that were suppose to be stronger, which was not a 1:1 ratio? I can see the benifits for a fast resin, as you mentioned.

    Hi Martin, thanx for uploading such great DIY tutorials. I‘ve discovered a crack on my fork‘s steerer tube (RockShox SID World Cup) and want to fix it with unidirectional HM prepregs. As I‘m very good in fixing various things, I‘m pretty confident of doing a decent job. But I have two questions: when it comes to baking it in the oven, I‘m unsure how the resin, which holds the stanchions in the crown would react at temperatures around 120 degrees Celsius. And can I compress the carbon layers sufficiently with heat shrinking tube instead of heat shrinking tape as I don‘t have to apply any additional resin? Thank you very much in advance🤘.

    • @ETOE
      @ETOE  4 года назад +1

      Use what ever you think suits for you. Why would you use so much heat? I see no need to use so much heat to cure any resin.

      @@ETOE Oops, I‘ve just noticed your reply…three years later 😂.
      Thank you for your reply. In the mean time I managed to fix it with Toray T800 UD Prepreg. And although being a quite humble guy, I have to admit that I‘m pretty proud of the result.
      I managed to build an isolating door for the oven, where I could stick the steerer tube through, so only the tube got exposed to the heat.
      Now I‘m fixed and made some other accessories for my mountainbike, like a carbon fender for the fork and a copy of the frame holder for my mini pump.
      Thanx again and I‘d love to see more of your carbon repair videos.

    Great content, subscribed!
    Can you go more in depth on how to fix a carbon frame, with materials details including type of carbon fibre and type of epoxi resin, maybe fix a downtube or a chain stay close to the aluminum piece that holds the hub (With time and use they start to separate and need a rebuild)
    Cheers mate!
