It ate brakes. It was all i had and i was grateful as hell my parents helped me with it. It was my prom limo
No shit, swear to God, my internet went out and the video paused on permanent "loading" wheel at exactly 1:23, when the "loading" screen was on. I sat and watch for a minute because I thought it was just a really well done edit.
randomdude 4014 Yeah it's roots trace back to the Mercedes Engine that Nissan/Datsun had the license to reproduce. Funny how it all works out though because Mercedes also use Renault engines in their baseline cars like the A-Class
A friend bought a 510. It was a cool little car. Idiot drove it into a ditch coming back from a bar near the cottage. He had it for 5 months! Schmuck! 🙂
My mom had one of these when I was a kid. I dont remember it ever actually running. It was green with what looked like cregor rims and faded purple tint this was back in the 90s
My mother at one time owned a brownish Datsun 510 wagon! It was nice! I wish she still had it! I would have bought it from her! We need Up to Speed episodes on the Thunderbird, Torino, Ranchero, Riviera, Cressida/Avalon, and the 442!!!!
Back in the 80s my girl friend's step-dad had one of these and I loved driving that thing. Meanwhile my step-mom had just bought an 81 Celica hatch. That was sweet but the 510 was more aesthetically pleasing.
I went with my dad to get a wagon to help us move from Cali to Oregon in 1983. The car was navy blue and looked better than the green paint and wood-paneled Ford Pinto wagon we had. Every time I think of when my dad sold that navy blue datsun 510 wagon, after we arrived in Oregon, I weep. Doggon it, Dad. wth!? Years later, in high school, my first vehicle was a ford truck. A '68 F100, inline 6 cylinder and a three-on-the-tree manual transmission. That's the vehicle I was taught how to drive a manual trans. My second vehicle was the '80 Datsun 210 4 door sedan. And I still wish I had a 510. Third, I had a first gen (1977) Toyota Celica GT (not a fast back. It had a trunk in which the fuel tank took half of the space in.) I had the Celica in 1994.
You wasted all your time with the history of Nissan/Datsun and forgot mention anything we need to know about the *510*. Here's some important stuff you left out. The 510 has a semi trailing arm rear suspension that with body roll in corners it actually steers the car from the rear wheels. In 1970, Mister Katayama hired Peter Brock (the guy who designed the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coup) to start a race team for Datsun. Developing the 510 race platform, BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises), with driver John Mortan, they won two consecutive TransAm Manufacturer Championship titles competing against Alfa Romeo and BMW. The little 510 showed Europe it was the hottest shit, and proved the BMW 2002 was actually the slow man's 510. In fact, when the 320i came out, it copied the 510's four headlight grill and that's still BMW's plagiarized trademark to this day. The 510 is the OG Japanese tuner that ignited the whole JDM craze. Do your homework.
We need an everything you need to know about an Australian icon. A car that encapsulates the very essence of racing in Australia. I had a 510 for my first car. It was black on black in red. Gas was in the 28-32 cents range. I bought gas with change found on the floor, sofa and cigar box savings coins.
kunying007 Datsun was withdrawn for export market by 80s when it was decided that all Nissan product should be sold as Nissan. The name do return in 2013 as a name for budget brand in developing country like India and Indonesia.
Surprised he never mentioned anything about it's success in the Trans Am racing series, which also helped Japanese cars find their place in the American market.
One of these days you've got to do the Pontiac Fiero - it was a great car with crazy potential but is the perfect example of getting the GM treatment in how it was developed and how it went away.
The 510 was indestructible. My friend had a ‘73 510 he bought for $200 back in high school in ‘95. He drove it down a frozen plowed farm field about 50 mph I thought we were going to die. Drove up and down a frozen massive spillway ditch with boulders. It ripped the tire right off. You could not kill it. My friend was an idiot beating that car
For the past 6 months I'm asking in the comments for 240Z, today I saw notification that there is new video by the Donut Media and the first thing I saw was Datsun, I was soo happy!! But then I saw 510... -.- I know he talked about it in the 350Z/370Z video, but he only mention it, there is a lot more into the history of how this care was made, as Nissan didn't wanted to make it in the first place. At there is "Wangan Midnight" of course!! :)
Be interesting to see something about cars such as this Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, Corsa, Vectra, Astra etc. Massively popular all over the UK, I'm sure all of Europe as well. Yes they aren't "exciting" cars but they're doing something right to sell so well. Interesting to see how they came about & how they became so popular.

Nissan/Datsun was great till they joined Renault Mitsubishi.
Payam yazdi I agree, but they did it to save themselves from a financial crisis
Plus it helped Renault develop an actual supercar for once not develop fast hatchbacks
Isn’t the L series of engines based on a Mercedes design?
