  • Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has slammed Prime Minister Liz Truss for not turning up to answer his Urgent Question on the sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng.
Mr Starmer had called for Ms Truss to come to the Commons and answer the question in front of MPs, but instead sent former Tory leadership contest rival Penny Mordaunt.

@@KrypTehEdits Boris lied too much, and abused his power too much. In my country, Norway, he would have been forced to resign after it was revealed a private individual had paid for work done on his private flat. In Norway that would have been seen as taking a bribe. In Norway members of Parliament, including one party leader, one deputy party leader, and one first speaker in Parliament - the speaker of the full chamber, both of the two sub chambers have their own speakers - have all had to resign after it was discovered they had been asigned Parliament flats, despite they weren't supposed to. Two of them had withheld that they owned homes closer to Parliament than 40 k. The party leader had rented it out, and claimed to live with his parents in Kristiansand, and therefore applied for å Parliament flat when he got elected to Parliament. The speaker didn't give a specific reason, but it has later been alleged she was separated from the man she lived with at that time, and therefore felt she didn't have another home at the time, despite she still owned half the house she had lived in. The deputy party leader claimed to be living in a flat in Stavanger, but in fact lived with her boyfriend in Oslo. All three of them, within days, had to resign as leader, speaker and deputy leader as a consequence. Two members of Parliament were discovered to have committed fraud. One of them so seriously he was arrested by the police, and later convicted to jail. The other had secured himself free holidays by having a single quick meetings with a local mayor or politician at the Holiday spot he visited, so he could claim the costs and transport as representation and expenditures. All the things BJ has done, being fined for having broken Covid regulations his own government had implemented, taking a bribe (in Norway for a MP to have someone else pay for his private expenditures or investments would have been regarded to be corruption), appointing an MP to his government which he knew was under investigation for sexual misconduct, and worse of all: lying to Parliament. Had a Norwegian PM been caught doing that, that would have been the end of that government.

@@Tvjunkieful12 We used to have similar standards for honesty and integrity elected officials in Westminster until 2015. The Leave/Remain European referendum set a precedent that "truth is relative" in politics but it finally seems to have reached it's ultimate conclusion with the Tory party being snapped back to reality with astonishingly low polling numbers - they could realistically get less seats than the SNP if/when a general election is triggered.

    • @Tvjunkieful12

I wonder if the Tories are making more damage long term by not agreeing to an election now? Especially if the budget will contain large cuts in spending that will be disliked by a majority of the public. If the tories ignore the anger in the population, demanding an election, could that mean the 2024 election will have Labour and the Liberals as the two largest parties? So maybe the SNP will be bigger than the Tories? I imagine Mrs Thatcher would be apalled.lol

The cost of energy bills is the number one issue on most people's minds, whether they're currently choosing between heating their homes and eating or not... WORKING people with reasonably good jobs are facing financial ruin. This "government" gave a two year lifeline against the energy crisis, spent a few weeks bragging about it, and now today renege on their word, leaving many again facing disaster in 6 months time. The best the "opposition" can do is mock them and jeer. Why are we putting up with this from any of them?? None of them are fit to make decisions for us and it's time they were all removed from the job they clearly can't do... taking care of the PEOPLE of this country... it makes me sick.
