  • Senior ministers launched a furious attack on the Speaker of the Commons this evening, accusing him of breaking parliamentary protocol to help Labour avoid a rebellion over Gaza.
In a serious challenge to Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s authority Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the Commons, suggested he had undermined his independence and “inserted himself” into political row in a way that had broken “long-established” parliamentary conventions.
Hoyle was forced to apologise to MPs, saying: “It was never my intention for it to end up like this.”
