- A potential Labour rebellion over the calling of a ceasefire in Gaza may have been defused after Sir Keir Starmer was thrown a lifeline by the Commons Speaker.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle allowed amendments from Labour and the government to be voted on in an unusual move that caused uproar in the Commons on Wednesday afternoon, with one MP shouting: “Bring back Bercow!”, a reference to Hoyle’s predecessor, John Bercow.
The decision to allow Labour’s amendment means the party’s MPs, who might have been tempted to back a Scottish National Party (SNP) motion, will be able to back a ceasefire without rebelling - a move that could have caused difficulty for Starmer.

What he did today was do out of order, his clerk actually went public with the fact he disagreed with him. Bearing in mind the clerks are the experts on parliamentary procedure it casts his decision to allow the Labour amendment in a very dubious light..

When politicians say "this is a highly sensitive subjects on which feelings are running high...". What they actually mean is I know the issue is important to others but I couldn't care less. It's a way of subtly dismissing issues they are not interested in and/or opinions they disagree with.

It is surely time that we found a new way of selecting a speaker? The fact that they are chosen from a currently elected member of a political party surely means they will have a political bias - and it appears the last 2 in particular have demonstrated an inability to leave their own political views behind them.

Theresa May sought to break constitutional laws that were in place to stop kings from plunging us into tyranny. Boris Johnson would regularly openly lie in parliament and lied to the Queen, which would have been a guaranteed resignation in the past.
It's strange how he became biased when the Tories started to debase parliament.

It seems Keir Starmer pressured the speaker of the house, so it was reported in the media although Lisa Nandy MP keeps denying it. However without realising, she made some admissions on national TV (Channel 4), which provides more light about what really happened and more questions will be raised about the role of the Labour Party, i.e. Keir Starmer.

The SNP proposal was scheduled to be tabled.
The Labour proposal was taken instead and the SNP proposal was binned.
The two proposals were NOT the same thing.
