Why? Well it is obvious, because, despite being a Tory, he is absolutely DISGUSTED by the behaviour of the Tory MPs currently occupying, or, us Labour Party members say, temporarily squatting on the government benches. The Tories have reached an all time low in terms of the quality of people now joining their Party, which is now, in effect, DEAD, to all intents and purposes. I am not sure if people who have never lived in the UK fully understand just how poisonous, heartless, callous, criminal and corrupt the Tories in this country are. I call them the cancer within the British political system which needs to be cut out and got rid of FOREVER, John Bercow excepted. You have no idea how much the Tories HATE Bercow, they have tried on numerous occasions, to get rid of him as Speaker, simply because he does NOT allow the Tories to get away with anything, and it is only because of the support of the Labour Party and other opposition parties that he is currently Speaker of the House of Commons, and is going to retire, not because he has been bullied out by the Tories, at the end of 31 October. John Bercow left the womb chewing on a dictionary. Personally i love him for it; I feel we should all strive to hold a vocabulary that can convey nuance or exactness, not just to sound posh, but words are fantastic and should be used and understood. I also feel very deeply for our American cousins, who while being very highly educated, probably struggled to keep up with a duluge of parlance with which they probably had never tangled, but hopefully gleaned from context. It's a joy to think that John justturned up and spoke, and just assumed everyone would keep up.

He is an absolutely phenomenal speaker, and I mean that both in his role in Parliament as well as his diction and dictation. He is so incredibly well spoken. I truly have never EVER seen a more concise and clear Q&A session with a politician in my entire life. He speaks with such authority, and not without respect either. American politicians ought to take notes from Mr. Bercow on how to present themselves and how to respectfully debate with their colleagues.
Honestly, at a time when the British political class has collectively shown itself to be completely unfit for purpose, John Bercow gives me an immense amount of pride. I will be sad to see him go.

oh no worries .I have seen this before though and thought maybe it is done deliberately by way of contrast. Some of the greatest speakers I have ever heard have had a plank of wood in human form to introduce them. What`s more they do not seem to be able to shut up, like they actually think anyone has come for them. Maybe they are just taking their big chance.
No he surely does not and I am sorry I have missed any chance to see him in Parliament. Whoever takes his place will have some job to live upto and I do not envy them that extra burden in what will be a challenging task. From the candidates probably Lindsay Hoyle ,who already is deputy speaker would be my choice. Different style, less flamboyant and eloquent but softly spoken with a Northern accent that could have got him a bit part in Game of Thrones
Bercow only speaks when he is standing up, just like when he addresses the House of Commons as speaker! I wonder if he does that at home as well?! :-P P.S. Good talk and Q&A session, many thanks for the upload.
Well since he just found his wife was sharing the marital bed with his cousin he probably has a few things to say at home. Most hated Speaker ever in the UK
I doubt if he would survive long if he stood up against his wayward wife (Sally) and shouted 'order' before berating her for being so publicly sexually obliging to our travelling community representatives.
If he ran for Prime Minister, I'd vote for him no matter what Party he was in. He makes politics interesting, and I have spent 49 years of my life avoiding politics :)
"I am however conscious of one quite sensitive matter which your natural courtesy may disincline you to raise with me directly but which if unaddressed will lurk potentially from my vantage point perilously in the undergrowth and which I conclude therefore should be knocked on the head at the outset". Gotta love how Mr. Bercow says "let me address the elephant in the room". What a brilliant wordsmith.
I like it when he gives a verbal lashing to grown men in the chamber like they're children, of course, using only the finest words and phrases to embarrass them, only the way a highly educated, right honorable Englishman with an extensive vocabulary can.... 😆
Smart guy, well versed, astute, great orator !! I have to say the House Of Commons will more than likely feel his loss as speaker !! He was and is good at keeping people engaged !! And held their attention by having a sense of humor . When his colleagues walked into that chamber they must have felt included in the process to make decisions that affected their communities !!!! Glad to see him here in the U S at The JFK Jr. Forum! Their loss, our gain !!
You, my friend, are more than welcome to this sack of shit. We in the UK have had enough of his verbal garbage and unconstitutional actions as Speaker. Just because a Brit talks "posh", doesn't mean he's talking sense and doesn't make him the good guy. He is doomed as Speaker because of his anticts and will probably face public investigation and (I hope) prosecution subsequently. He is a pompous prick at best and a very dangerous political entity at worst. He believes that Parliament are the masters of the people, which has set him against many MP's and, of course, the very people of whom he speaks. Our unwritten constitution dictates that the People are the masters and that parliament serves. This detestable little dickhead says otherwise.

An outstanding oratorical display from Mr Bercow. However without meaning to sound overscrupulous, or to detract in any sense from the powerfully engaging and creatively masterful deployment of the English language, nor more importantly the overarching and uniquely valuable insights he delivers into subject matter of which he clearly has world-class experience and understanding, at 09:33 he uses the word, "Physiognomy", when in fact I do believe the correct word he was intending to use in order to fit the meaning and context of his message, is "Physiology". That is of course unless Mr Bercow is anticipating the affect of age being of such significant impact on his facial expressions as to pull his entire physical form into a reduced format, which would suggest a potentially disturbing series of occurances to which I expect Mr Bercow did not intend his audience to imagine.
This reminds me of the BBC radio program ‘Just a Minute’ where panelists compete to speak uninterrupted and without pause or repetition until the gong goes.
Most memorable speaker since William Lenthall in 1642. "I have neither eyes to see, nor tongue to speak, in this place, but as the house is pleased to direct me, whose servant I am here." To Charles I when he was asked to the whereabouts of certain MPs.

This was a very interesting presentation, particularly the Q&A portion. It's very welcome to see and hear a professional politician who is capable of sustained qualitative discourse. I would also observe, if I may, that even though Speaker Bercow was unable to praise Harvard Univ. enough, to the point of suggesting that Harvard is the finest academic setting to be found anywhere, I would simply remind him that Cambridge University - in his own UK - has contributed more, thus far, to the shape and development and overall awareness of homo sapiens than any other single institution on the entire planet (not to mention that Cambridge U. has also produced more Nobel laureates than any other single institution). It is not the role of Parliament to govern; that is the Government's job. Mr Speaker Bercow has facilitated this change of roles by various unorthodox means, aided and abetted by the recent UKSC judgement on prorogation. By virtue of a minority Government's inability to govern, and the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011, Parliament is currently holding the Government hostage at its pleasure. Previously, a Prime Minister could force a General Election, giving the People the opportunity to fix such an impasse. Not so now. This might be of interest to students of what is now the former Westminster system of governance.
It is the job of the Government to govern but the job of Parliament to approve (or not) the legislation proposed by the Government, and to hold the Government to account. Decades of insurmountable majorities for Thatcher and Blair meant that Parliament's role was largely ceremonial and recent Prime Ministers have gotten it into their heads that Parliament is simply there to rubber stamp their legislation. Bercow has spent the last ten years trying to ensure that Parliament (the elected representative of the people) is able to do the job it exists to do and is paid (by the tax payer) to do.
Please don’t leave Mr Bercow , you are the best. It will be so boring to watch House of Lords/common without you You are the best and make it very interesting to listen the debates at the Parliament.

It ruled totally unlawful. But Johnson's not going to resign. Analysis by various talking heads predicts NO to a vote of no confidence for fear of ill timed general election (allowing no deal brexit). That BoJo will carry on stymied by parliament in his attempt at brinkmanship with the EU and therefore will only get a shit deal. He was trying to grab the EU by the balls and now our unwritten constitution has peeled his pale stubby fingers off their short and curlies. UK voted to leave the EU. That must be delivered. Now it will be delivered 10 years down the line when UK is no longer UK (minus Scotland, achieving a united Ireland) and is the legal term "England and Wales". Which sounds like a weird country to me. Like Trinidad and Tobago and just as significant on the world stage. We will be so reduced economically (business and capitalism has only so much patience and no sentimentalism) that by the time of brexit we'll be so desperate we'll accept anything or rather think "is this the best we can get? We may as well stay." And then we will but without the enormous privilege and advantage we previously had.

Listening to a pundit on the Radio later among the suggestions as to what happens next were …. As you said.. The Government could move a vote of no confidence in itself to trigger a General Election. The opposition would not support this and be in an unprecedented position of supporting the thing they oppose.Wierd times. A Government of National Unity could be formed.Led by Ken Clarke apparently. Not seen since the Great Depression of the `30`s or earlier with William Pitt .Let`s hope they have to wear period costume. Mr, Bercow is a walking dictionary -Wikipedia. Queens English language properly executed. What a great mind and orator.
Tom Riviere He’s a brilliant mind.
And an anti-democrat (as in Perikles not the US political party).
Didn't take him long to mention his labour party friends.
He is a sociopath, they can do it.
@Nikiforos IV Fokas: Pericles strengthened democracy in Athens by paying public officials. Pericles expanded the empire by building a strong naval fleet. Pericles rebuilt and beautified Athens. Athenian democracy, art, and architecture set standards that remain influential in the world today.

You will, perhaps, be surprised to learn that there are, in fact, smart people in the USA. Foreigners imbibe too much American pop culture and acquire a regrettably inaccurate perception of the American intellect.
I agree with your view on his linguistic talent. Looking around the UK for the most part you'd swear that Darwin and his evolutionary theorem is massively incorrect.....

So should British politicians, in fairness. I couldn't think of a better ambassador for Britain's greatest institution.

Honestly, at a time when the British political class has collectively shown itself to be completely unfit for purpose, John Bercow gives me an immense amount of pride. I will be sad to see him go.

True, and I didn't mean to be rude... But even without Bercow, this gentleman's stage presence could be outshined by a cauliflower.

Some of the greatest speakers I have ever heard have had a plank of wood in human form to introduce them.
What`s more they do not seem to be able to shut up, like they actually think anyone has come for them.
Maybe they are just taking their big chance.
In that case, it worked... Not that Bercsy needed the help. :)
The beginning was the definition of "Say the line Bart" meme

Glad to see him here in the U S at The JFK Jr. Forum! Their loss, our gain !!
You, my friend, are more than welcome to this sack of shit. We in the UK have had enough of his verbal garbage and unconstitutional actions as Speaker. Just because a Brit talks "posh", doesn't mean he's talking sense and doesn't make him the good guy. He is doomed as Speaker because of his anticts and will probably face public investigation and (I hope) prosecution subsequently. He is a pompous prick at best and a very dangerous political entity at worst. That is of course unless Mr Bercow is anticipating the affect of age being of such significant impact on his facial expressions as to pull his entire physical form into a reduced format, which would suggest a potentially disturbing series of occurances to which I expect Mr Bercow did not intend his audience to imagine.
