  • The 2024 NFL Draft is officially over & the Dallas Cowboys added 8 players in the NFL Draft, although none of them are a running back! Cowboys Report host Tom Downey breaks down each of the Cowboys draft picks and gives you his final draft grade for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys drafted OT Tyler Guyton from Oklahoma in Round 1 before taking DE Marshawn Kneeland, Center Cooper Beebe and LB Marist Liuafu in Round 3. Dallas did not find a RB on Day 3, but did get players like Caelen Carson, Nathan Thomas and Justin Rogers.

*LIUFAU has a nonstop motor. I see upside. Grade B
*CARSON was BPA in rd 5. Definitely a high IQ and heavy hitter. Never scared. Grade B+.
*FLOURNOY is such a fun player to watch and i see him as our Deebo Samuel. Grade A-.
THOMAS is a great value pick. He was a steal. Great depth piece. Grade B.
ROGERS was my best NT remaining. I think he makes the team and contributes a little this season. Grade C+

Where do you run to for starters?

  • @VTPSTTU
    @VTPSTTU 13 дней назад +5

    Thanks for the video.
As bad as the running back room is, the Cowboys have Mazi Smith, Osa Odighizuwa, and Carl Banks as defensive tackles plus having Chauncey Golston as a 'tweener tackle. The Cowboys have been pushed around in the running game. The big need for the Cowboys was defensive tackle, and they didn't address that need until pick 244. That's a sad commentary on how things went.
While the Cowboys might need a fast wide receiver, that need isn't as big because Prescott really doesn't hit long passes. I understand wanting speed, but taking a receiver who has had injuries and not played high end competition when the other needs are so strong seems foolish.
If I weren't trying to persuade Prescott to seek a trade, triple-dipping on the offensive line would make more sense. On the other hand, most of these seem to be developmental picks. That encourages me a little bit.
I see Nathan Thomas as a little bit of a pet cat, so I really like that pick.
    Individually,
    Tyler Guyton - A
Marshawn Kneeland - B- (only because the Cowboys are still full of edge players)
Cooper Beebe - A- (If he successfully transitions to center, he's an A. If he ends up being a guard and the Cowboys don't trade Zack Martin for picks, he's a B.)
    Marist Liufau - C
    Caelen Carson - B
    Ryan Flournoy - D
    Nathan Thomas - A
    Justin Rogers - B+
My overall grade is a C+. The Cowboys need to be a physical team on the defensive side of the ball, and this draft doesn't do quite enough to make them that kind of team.
Much will also depend on what they do with the UDFA class. If they made some of these picks in anticipation of getting some UDFA players and those players come to the Cowboys, this grade could improve. For instance, if they sign both Nathaniel Watson and Jordan Magee as linebackers, the linebacker room is going to look much better. If they pick up another good defensive tackle prospect as a UDFA, that will make the draft look better. Maybe they have a line on some UDFA running back who will be happy to join the team and can provide some help.

I don’t get your overall C+ grade. You only have 2 individual grades below that one C and one D. 6 grades above it A,A,A-, B+, B, B-. Your median individual grade is between B and B+ yet you drop the overall to a C+? Beebe could play guard and Tyler Smith could kick out to tackle while Guyton develops. Bass plays center perhaps. I guess time will tell, hopefully it will be good to us.

    • @VTPSTTU
      @VTPSTTU 13 дней назад

@@dr.markevers8331 Thanks for a good question. Essentially, you are asking how the whole can be less than the sum of the parts. I don't pretend that I can give an answer with which you will agree, but I'll try to give you my thought process and to some extent what I suspect many fans will be thinking.
Many of us would like to see the Cowboys make a statement. Mr. Downey has often complained that the Cowboys don't seem to be going in any particular direction with their choices. Some of us would like the Cowboys to admit openly that the Super Bowl window for this team probably doesn't open until 2026 or 2027 and that the team will make choices aimed at developing for that time. Others want to see the Cowboys do everything necessary to win a Super Bowl right now with Dak Prescott as the quarterback. To do that, they need to extend Prescott in a way that will put off his big salary cap hits into the future. They would then use the cap space to sign good free agents and build a championship-caliber team around him. Many of us would like to see the Cowboys send a message that this team is going to be physical. We may lose, but we won't be beat in the trenches. Many of us look at individual areas where the team seems to be weak in the big games and want to see a real commitment to improving those areas as they apply to the big games.
I don't think this draft sends any particular message. Justin Rogers may end up being a pretty good defensive tackle, but addressing defensive tackle at pick 244 doesn't send a message that the Cowboys are going to have a powerful run defense in the big games. Justin Rogers is not likely to give the Cowboys an inside rush that will pressure quarterbacks. No one expects him to be an upgrade over Jonathan Hankins. He's a Band-Aid over a weakness. Marshawn Kneeland should help in run defense, but he's not likely to play all three downs because he's not a good rusher. If teams are passing on early downs, we're accepting that we won't get much rush on them. He's a replacement for Fowler and Armstrong, but they weren't major contributors. Again, he's a Band-Aid on a weakness. No one really sees Marist Liufau as a future great linebacker. The Cowboys need linebacker depth, but they also need linebacker excellence. We don't know whether Trevon Diggs will return to his previous ability after his injury. Eventually, we'll have to try to pay DaRon Bland. Caelen Carson is a good piece to put into the pipeline, but I'm not sure that this pick sends a message. The Cowboys have a bunch of wide receivers who need to develop from their day 3 or UDFA beginnings. Ryan Flournoy may be faster than most of them, but he's never played against great competition and has an injury history. Even at pick 216, a defensive tackle combined with the Rogers pick at 244 would have sent a message that the Cowboys are going to become a powerful defense. On the other hand, if the Cowboys wanted to send the message that they are going to surround Prescott with talent now for a win now, they would have grabbed a better receiver earlier in the draft. If they wanted to send a message that they are going to win now, they would have gotten a running back. The offensive line picks seem to send a message that the Cowboys are going to get rid of mediocre offensive linemen, but two of them being more developmental guys seems to suggest that the Cowboys are planning for the window to open later than for them to make a run now.
Maybe this draft will make sense later in the summer. Maybe I'm more negative because last year's draft seemed to be full of bad decisions.I just see this draft as less than the sum of the parts right now.

Everyone just need to stop crying about them not drafting a RB. Look at the games that you were embarrassed by the opposing running game, they fixed those issues in the draft. They improved on O-line which would help any of the RB run better….dont forget about options at UDFA as well.

I remember as some of you do the Redskins went to the Super Bowl and had injuries at the RB position so they went out and found a RB off the streets and game into that game running for 200
    yards.
Yet the real reason he was able to do so was because of that offensive line they had which was one of the best in the NFL. So prioritizing the OL was and is very important I still have reservations about the center spot though because they can still look at some of the HBCU players available pool which none got drafted and may find a stud at the position...

B .... Guyton n Beebe are solid picks, they both will be anchors on the o line immediately along w Smith n Martin should make Dallas line one of best in the league n Thomas In the 7th was a great value pick ... 2 areas I felt was needed to address n could have been very easily accomplished w out reaching was of course Rb n Wr ... Dallas rb depth chart is by far worse in the league n outside of Lamb where is Dak goin to go w the ball a wr or 2 would have been very helpful .... there was several Rb on the board 3rd round or later that would have been better then what Dallas has at the moment in the back field. I personally would have liked to seen em go after Jaylen Wright, Bucky Irving, or Ray Davis w 3rd ... at Wr 4th round n later we could have chosen Luke Mccaffery, Troy Franklin, or my personal favorite Johny Wilson out of FSU he has great size n length n toughness n even Brenden Rice towards end of draft ....

Did i hear you say no speed at receiver but Flournoy has it. We have a receiver now that has more speed that Daks arm can throw to and thats Turpin. Flournoy cant stretch the field if Dak hangs onto the ball to long and Flournoy gets out of Daks range. That has happened to Turpin a couple of times. Dak has always wanted to see a receiver wide open before he throws the ball and that hurts when trying to stretch the field. Even some Dallas DB's have admitted that.

I’m wondering if they are trying to get both Zeke and Dalvin Cook. I actually love this draft class a lot but that’s no surprise. Will McClay is the only front office guy I see as being the most competent, and it’s not even close. I’m not so big of Kneeland. Feels like Taco Charlton 2.0.

I don't have an issue at all with their running back room. They've got Deuce Vaughn, Rico Dowdle, Zeke, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. My educated guess is they will probably add another back to this room before the preseason. Let's get ourselves out of panic mode. This will probably be a committee backfield, and that means fresh legs. Stopping the run is our highest priority, not running back.

I give our grade a solid C, I don't believe in passing on better talent to get multiple picks of lesser talent, and our 1st Rd pick is very raw and we need someone to step in and help year 1, then Beebe I think is our best pick. Also I don't like not taking a RB with one of our 3rd picks...very disappointing because Dak like most QBs plays way better with a good run game. But let's hope all the picks turn out better then we think..let's go cowboys!!!
