I got married in a retirement home 😂 my husbands grandfather was too ill to leave so we asked if we could do it there and luckily they agreed. Not only that it was a beautiful setting, all the residents made bunting, a cake and they treated me with such kindness whilst in their home. They enjoyed the guitar player and drank champagne with us. It was so special and even more so as my husbands grandfather passed 2 months later and we were so pleased he could be at our wedding regardless of anything superficial 👵🏼👨🏽‍🦳

I had my 97 year old grandmother at my wedding AND reception. She was so much fun! She literally closed the reception down with us and out drank, out smoked and out danced every young person there! She was a riot. I miss her. She was a true example of class (even if my reception sentence doesn’t make it seem that way) and she was so much fun.

They deserve love and happiness just like the rest of us. Your grandma sounds truly AWESOME in every way possible. I’m so glad you had those memories to look back on. Yes! This is it. The old folks know how to party. My great grandmother was in an assisted living home after she broke her hip. She was a pistol and would burn it up with her walker. All of the old folks would be getting down with hard liquor at dinners and parties. Mom and dad were having coffee a little shocked and the other oldies but goodies were like don’t you want a bourbon and coke. Good times. I miss my great grandma and my grandparents. All of them were wonderful people and I am blessed to have had them all as long as I did.

I would never want to be in a wedding with some of these look focused people anyways. My best friend asked to be in her wedding and due to my size it was hard to find a bridesmaid dress in the same color as the maid of honor with the time constraints. I told her I totally understood if she wanted to ask someone else because the day is her day. She told me she didn't care if I wore jeans and a t shirt what mattered is that I was able to be apart of the day with her. If your "friend" cares more about aesthetics than you, maybe you need a new friend.

I got married recently, one of my oldest and closest friends was a bridesmaid. Over the course of the year she discovered she had cancer and had to have treatment meaning she lost her hair. I was terrified my wonderful friend wouldn't be well enough to come. In the end she was and chose to wear a wig during the ceremony but took it off during the evening part of the wedding. she looked amazing both ways and was the life and soul of the party. I wanted to let her choose what to wear and just wanted her to be comfortable. At the end of the day it's more important to celebrate your day with people you love than fixate on how they may look. My friend looked so beautiful and i couldn't have gotten married without her.

    • @KatieBellino
      @KatieBellino Год назад +2

I am wondering if this will continue to go into fashion. It used to be that people bought a lot of presents for the bride and groom's place because people were married at a very young age and didn't have anything to furnish a house. Now, people often have already been in a dwelling either as a couple or in separate dwellings. They might have things that would be nice to upgrade, but help with wedding costs/party is in many ways more helpful.

At least i have reasoning for maybe not having my grandmother come to my wedding reception if it's any bit rowdy, if i ever get married and she's still around.
For 1, she works herself up into a frenzy for any normal holiday and somehow ends up at the emergency room by day's end. It's terrible, but we have bets for the 4th of july, thanksgiving, and christmas as to whether she'll be in the hospital and my mother has to duck out of family events.
2, she's sweet when she's not complaining, but now there's always something to complain about. I saw her for 20 minutes recently (stopped by to say hi on my way to an appointment) and she spent the entire 20 mins complaining about 1 thing. I don't even remember if she said hi.
3, she's not....dangerous per say. But it was only last week or so that she got up, took two steps, and went down, fracturing her arm and requiring stitches. There's nothing worse for a party than stopping because you have to call an ambulance because someone on blood thinners is bleeding out from a head wound from a fall.
Although i have a feeling deep in the pits of my stomach that she wouldn't even make it through the ceremony alright and that she wouldn't appreciate or remember it. It hurts that she's become so frail and that she's not really living in the moment anymore.

@@Sonnenanbeterin1991 My Nan was a party animal and was the life and soul. Everyone loved her and she was just the sweetest thing. She was in her 80's when she passed but she still enjoyed life till the end. It depends on the grandma I suppose, but if she's still happy and having fun then it's a deal breaker saying she can't go. I often spent more time at parties talking to my Nan and getting her drinks and nibbles than I did with anyone else. She was a lot more fun than most of the other family. At my sisters wedding she was as much the center of attention as my sister was, and my sisters new husband demanded a Nanna dance after the bride and groom dance. Nan loved it, and had a wonderful time. My sister didn't think it was weird or get offended because Nan was getting attention. The whole family had the same attitude. Not a bridezilla story, but more of a “maid of honorzilla” story. I was in a wedding once where the maid of honor lived in another country (we are talking across an ocean far).
Due to distance, she couldn’t help with any of the maid of honor duties (which is fine, we all pitched in and helped plan).
We all were told to go to this one dress shop to have our measurements taken for the dresses.
She sent her own measurements in via email and had the dress delivered to the bride’s home.
We all got the dresses in (after alterations) only like a week before the wedding. Unfortunately, due to the style of the dress, the way the alterations were done left most of us with dresses that ALMOST fit, but not quite.
    We all made due.
The day of the wedding, we are all getting ready with the bride, when the MOH tries on her dress to find it slightly loose.
    Not even noticeable.
She insisted that another bridesmaid (who she doesn’t know and who’s dress fit her) trade her dresses as it was a smaller size.
The other bridesmaid refused. Because…why would she trade? It’s her dress that fit her!
The MOH literally cried and threw a fit.
She was acting unhinged about a slightly loose dress on her best friends’ wedding day, a couple hours before the ceremony.
The bride was very calm and composed through it all, luckily.
    It was absolutely ridiculous.
She didn’t speak to anyone else the duration of the day. The most childish, dramatic encounter I’ve had with another adult

We had multiple things that went wrong at our wedding. My dress turned out to be nothing like what I thought it would be (long story) and there wasn't time to change it. My groom's relatives wore peach instead of going with the blue theme. The pearl necklace I was going to wear down the aisle broke before I could put it on. One of my bridesmaids wore different color stockings than all the rest. The preacher forgot to tell everyone to sit down after I came in so the crowd remained standing for most of the ceremony. An uninvited, mentally ill acquaintance managed to figure out where the wedding was and showed up at the reception.
You know what went right? I married the man who loves me and does all he can to make me happy, and I do the same for him. In the end that's all that matters. The rest is just window dressing. We've been happily married for 30 years now.

dress delivered unfinished the night before:
venue forgot to tell us when it was time to come down so the ceremony started super-late despite my waiting there an hour + 1/2 early:
our hand-picked & much- bonded-with celebrant flubbed like 60% of the ceremony:
the reception stylist delivered something majorly different than what was contracted + paid for:
both sleeves on my dress had ripped by the end of the ceremony:
someone decided to get clever against their instructions which pointlessly messed up the glass-stomp (but we just went again):
despite us keeping it very intimate 1 person _still_ managed to do something that made him dead to me when I learned of it the day after:
a family member showed just absolutely their whole arse to their new in-laws (socially, of course) all reception long so that they aren't fans since:
I was in terrible pain from a chronic injury _the entire long day from 9am makeup to 12am getaway car_ ...
Honestly, it seemed like the only issue we _didn't_ have was the security one, & I had been concerned about that. Grateful it didn't happen.
I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that nonsense.
But it was the happiest day of my life, & in the moment, up on that cloud, nothing else even felt real...
I mean, I _remember_ all the little roadbumps, as in remembering the events themselves, & my best girls still laugh about it, but I was just up too high for anything else to reach me emotionally, at the time.
I was like Futurama's Fry moving in caffeinated hyper-time, calmly shifting everything away from the fire, with a dreamy expression on his face in the midst of everyone else's total panic.😂
I was in the loving + supportive bosom of the most incredible women I have ever met, my sisters of decades, & making a promise so big it'd never originally been in my life-plan, to a _magical_ partner I knew I never wanted to live without.
I was terrified, + elated, & just completely swept away, & up against that incredible strength of emotion, I just _couldn't_ feel anything negative. Not for so much as a moment.
I had expected day-of stress, _prepared_ for day-of stress, but then when the stressful things happened, I found myself completely serene in the face of them.
      (Sweet deal, I know!)
It was such a vast, beautiful, meaningful, _special_ ritual of a day that I personally can't conceive of what goes through the heads of ppl who get focused on such an ephemeral detail as human aesthetic perfection, or ppl performing some perfect production where they're all LARPing as flawless, rich ppl for a day, to the point than conformity to the fantasy becomes of higher personal value than emotional authenticity, + connection, + _celebration_ , back in reality.
How do you lose perspective _that much_ ?
      SMH.
Sorry this got so long! I just wanted to let you know that I can relate. 🙂
I hope we one day get to say, "hey, we've been married 30 years," too.❤

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding a few years ago and the couple had three grandparents still alive. The bridal party voluntarily decided to take that pressure off the bride, groom and their parents and 'adopted' the grandparents. Beforehand we decided which bridesmaid/groomsman combo would get each grandparent and at the rehearsal dinner we introduced ourselves. Day of we were their bff, checking in on them every 20 ish minutes, to solve their problems before they could even mention it to the bride, groom or their parents.
The photographs are taking too long? I feel ya, my feet are killing me too. How about I grab folding chairs for us while we wait for our turns. The music is too loud? Here let me move you to a table further away from the speakers. Drink getting a little low? Let me grab you another one. You're heading to the bathroom that is up a half flight of stairs with a walker? What a coincidence me too, I'll walk with you. Cold? I'll grab a jacket from one of the grooms men. Super long story about your neighbors granddaughters wedding and how the entire thing was trashy? Fascinating, tell me more. Really tired and want to go back to the hotel? Here's an uber and call me so I know you got back ok.
It was a little bit of work but it meant that my friends could enjoy their wedding without worrying about if their grandparents were comfortable. They were incredibly appreciative. TBH grandmas talk the best trash and I got my adopted grandma to do a shot of tequila with me.

The bride and groom responded to this and had explained they were having a destination wedding and had invited a selected number. They had reached out to everyone asking if they were still coming and the no shows were still saying yes. They sent a number of texts asking if they were still coming just before the big day and they asking anyone if they couldn’t make it to let them know. To all the bridezillas who want the “perfect” wedding:
When one of my high school friends married, we all flew out for the wedding; this meant the bridesmaids did not get their dresses until the last minute (having been ordered months before) and they turned out to be a disaster - wrong color that didn’t match the shoes, huge, puffy televangelist sleeves, wrong fabric. They did what the could (swapped sleeves for spaghetti straps) but they were still hideous. Mother of the bride was quite upset. They looked like a bad cover band for the Supremes.
At the church, the bridesmaids all hung their heads, shoulders shaking - MOTB thought they were crying about the dresses until we said, “Look closer - they’re trying not to laugh on the altar.” We then proceeded, one by one, to hand tissues to the MOTB (the suppressed laughter in our pew was exquisite - something anyone raised Catholic can attest to) - until the MOTB let out a huge cackle…
    Epic.
She started hitting us for making her laugh, which just produced even more sniggers. At the reception, we got the DJ to play Stop In The Name Of Love, and the bridesmaids gave an outstanding lip sync performance.
Until the day they died, the parents of the bride would roar with laughter when we recounted that day - that’s “perfect”.

He broke my heart and strung me along for a while afterwards... so I constantly teetered between devastation and hope. Our mutual friend's wedding was coming up and I envisioned this scene where I come in looking fabulous + the wedding vibes would rekindle our relationship. Again, I was 22.
Then, two weeks before, I found out he had started dating someone new and was telling all his friends she was "the one". She was also going to be attending with him.
I expressed my reluctance to attend the wedding to my friend as I knew I wasn't ready to see him with someone else. She scolded me and said I better be there. But I was just so heart broken. Also worth noting, I wasn't in the bridal party so although we were friends, we weren't 'besties'.
Then, a few days later, my gums and jaw began to ache and the dentist said I needed all 4 wisdom teeth out. They could have scheduled it for the Monday after, but I insisted Friday was good.
Now that I'm older, I have zero regrets over not putting myself through that.

So he even knew how my kids would be handled. Got to the wedding-tons of kids. Then my SISTER asked me why my kids weren’t there. 😂😂 I told her we were informed they weren’t having kids at the wedding. She was not impressed.

The greatest gift my son and daughter-in-law ever gave us - marrying at City Hall, with each of their best friends, then coming over to our house the day after and saying "We're married."
No guest list. No money spent. No smiling and pretending to be happy to see people I don't know or like. No stress. Just a great daughter-in-law!

I pretty much did this when I got married the second time. My first wedding was mostly forced upon me, I literally woke up the morning of the wedding and my first thought was “there’s always divorce” - should’ve listened to my gut! Anyway, marrying someone I loved and was my best friend we both decided that a big wedding wasn’t something we wanted, why get into debt for a party? So we didn’t tell anyone, made excuses for our mums to meet us at the registry office (both our dads have passed) and told our kids we were heading to a different family members wedding and told them all literally 2 minutes before we went in - then had a nice lunch in a fancy restaurant - then invited our siblings to our house for dinner and drinks and told them we got married that day. Wouldn’t change a thing - had the wedding we wanted, zero debt, no stress and no drama.

Actually, it was a good move on the parents part. That daughter would probably just ordered whatever she wanted, now she has to make choices. Not only whether to delay the second home to spend the money on the wedding, but to limit the wedding to how much has been saved for the second home. The parents know they do not need a second home, they have set her up for life, so they don't ever have to feel guilty about not paying for the wedding.

I’m so stunned at how petty people get over their wedding day. I was so chill at mine. All I cared about was getting married. I wanted a beautiful day, but mainly I just wanted to get married. I told my bridesmaids a color I was hoping they could wear, and let them all pick their own dress because I wanted them to be comfy. I couldn’t afford to pay for them to get their makeup done so I told them if they wanted to pay to get it done that was fine but I also told them they could do it themselves if they wanted and do whatever look they liked. Same with nails and hair. I bought their shoes and gifted them each a bracelet that was handmade for them. Two of my bridesmaids went to breakfast with me that morning, then we went to the church and got ready. I had hired an MUA to do my hair and makeup, but I couldn’t afford to pay her service for everyone, so my bridesmaids (who were more than fine doing their own hair and makeup) hung out and got ready in the same room as me. None of them knew each other but they all helped each other with hair and makeup. It was such a fun morning and is a memory I cherish. I truly loved just having them there with me. I also (being on a budget) made their bouquets myself with my MOH from artificial flowers we got at Joann’s. And they were beautiful. I can’t imagine asking a bridesmaid to pay for their bouquets. So tacky. Overall my wedding was beautiful but quite simple. Somethings really didn’t flow like I’d planned. But I didn’t care. I just wanted to marry the love of my life. The whole experience cost $6,000, which I thought was a ton but weddings are so expensive that it didn’t go as far as I’d hoped. And that was fine. I get wanting a beautiful day, but if you can’t afford it, don’t do it. Weddings are about celebrating love, not being so petty that you hurt feelings and alienate people.

My wife bought the marriage licence, as I was out of the country until the wedding day. (Very long story.)
The two witnesses took us for a wonderful meal afterwards.
My first wedding had a reception, although not overly expensive.
The difference was that I didn’t really feel part of my first wedding. It seemed to all be about other people, and not just the bride.

This is just my take on weddings, so here goes. If you keep the wedding small, inexpensive, don't spend thousands on a dress you're only wearing once, etc., have a nice, but again, small reception, then you can have all the money you saved on what is really important. A house, a new car, new furniture, retirement, etc. It's the life you start AFTER the wedding that is important. Not all the glitz and glam just to get a piece of paper that states your union is legal. Again, this is just my take.

    • @KatieBellino
      @KatieBellino Год назад

I agree. Go nice, but don't spend $20k-30k. That is ridiculous. You can make it happen for a budget of about $10k and still have a decent wedding with all of things people are used to seeing. If you are willing to DIY a lot of things, you can go even cheaper.

Regarding the story with no-show guests, it's not always about the money, it can be about the guest count too. My fiance and I are only having 40 guests attend our wedding, and it has been difficult to whittle the total guest count down to 40 without making anyone important feel left out. So if we had two guests simply not show up, that would be annoying because we could have invited someone else in their place.

The father of the groom will take his son for a fitting and pay for the suit, the mother of the bride will pay for the dress (which is an evolution of giving her own dress, as that was done before). And the food is most often done by both families in-house. Everything else (the location if it's not on private familly grounds) the rings the honeymoon, bedding for the guests etc are paid by the couple.

She flat refused the reception because “those are for young folks” so we had a special cake and punch reception right after the ceremony at the church where we cut the wedding cake and folks could mingle while we did photos. Long story short she spent $300 on the wedding, including her dress and it was wonderful. They had it outside at a nature reserve in front of a gorgeous little pond and the dressing was semi casual. You could even wear jeans, as long as you had some form of blue and or whit on she didn't care. We even got to bring our 3 legged lad with us.( he got to dress up with a white bandana🐶!) I've been to a few wedding and theirs by far was the best. My point is that you don't have to break yourself to have the best day you and your partner will never forget. You have a blue dress you like, with shoes you have to go with that? Great, wear your dress and shoes. Doesn't matter what color blue, I love all blue colors" For food, big ass buffet. Different types of ethnic food with some meat and some veggie for everybody and it all costs the same no matter who shows or doesn't show. It may be a bit ghetto but if some stuck-up person doesn't like it than they should not have RSVP'd. I'm always of the mindset that the wedding shouldn't be that expensive because the money should be saved for the marriage. The wedding is only one day. The marriage is (or should be) forever. 🤷‍♀️

My great grandmother went to a lot of weddings and receptions in her 80s and 90s. She never drank, but she still had fun, she danced with guests, watched people, ate dinners, even stood in groups to try and catch the bouquet. She did catch it once, and people kept asking if she would marry her male friend. She and they had fun with it. Older people can be really fun at receptions. That one bride who wanted to exclude her future husband's grandma, I hope she changed her mind and let grandma come to both wedding and reception. I have a feeling that marriage didn't last long.

All I cared about my wedding is that everyone had fun. Boy did we. My bridemaids even picked out their own dresses. They were beautiful. This was 1980 when most bridesmaids dresses were hideous. Real mean about the niece. Heartbreaking.

Ignore any woman who goes with the, "bride's way, bride's day" or "happy wife, happy life"... or anyone who tells you to get rid of a beloved pet if you want to marry them. if they can't compromise during the wedding, they'll never learn. You can also tell a lot about a woman by the engagement ring they chose. the more expensive they want the engagement ring, the more you should nope out of the whole wedding

I was thinking that they've already funded her wedding by sending her to college so she could get a good job, as well as buying her a house and car so she doesn't have to "waste" her pay on those things. Like, all her major expenses are already taken care of. Sure a second home would be nice but maybe that's a good reason not to have a huge expensive wedding.

My husband and I couldn't afford a huge wedding. Know what we did? Invited a total of ten people, made our own decorations, rented a small but gorgeous banquet hall at a local Greek restaurant, and just got silver rings that were roughly sixty bucks. In total(including my dress) was about 2,100. We wanted to backpack around Asia(and did for six months!!) for our honeymoon, and wanted to concentrate on saving for that. No regrets.

Re: Wedding couple insisting parents to pay
Ok so firstly, be lucky your family helped you out with all of those free things like house, car, etc. Most ppl dont ever have that luxury. While sometimes it is traditional that the parents of the bride pay for the wedding and the parents of the groom pay for the rehearsal dinner, its never been a REQUIREMENT. Parents can rightfully choose what they wanna do. They helped you get a debt free start into your adult life and seems you're doing well for yourself. Some people dont even have a first home so maybe that second home can wait if you really want your smashing wedding.
I think the only thing this couple can do if they wanna be any more ungrateful is suggest that they'll elope 🙄

Talk about "entitled". The last bride who was saving for their SECOND house didn't want to pay for the wedding. Good grief. My daughter and her husband informed us they were "eloping" and we gave them a nice check, waved goodby as they drove off and heaved a huge sigh of relief. Did I miss seeing my only daughter get married? Yes. However, the stress we avoided was a good trade off and they had the wedding they wanted, in a vineyard in California, barefoot and casual. We sent out announcements afterward. That was 11 years ago and 3 grandbabies ago. Guess it worked.

I couldn’t have cared less about how much money my parents spent on a wedding and I didn’t care much about it being a “perfect” day. My parents were there, I was in Mom’s gown from her wedding, Dad gave me away. My husband had on a new suit that didn’t match the groomsmen. It was all great!
I lost my husband fourteen years ago. It was our marriage that counted, not the wedding.
I would have been happy with our civil ceremony we had before our church wedding because it turned out my husband was too young to get married in our state. He had a birthday two days later but by the time we knew all the invitations were out already.
      A memorable day for sure.!

Anyone else remember when a wedding was making a commitment to the person you love, in front of family and friends? Unfortunately were some special people physically missing from our wedding, though I’m sure they were there in spirit. Stop being so egocentric about weddings, share that special time with those you love as you don't know how long you’ll have them. Weddings should be about celebrating love and not showing off.

She called the day before to say she had car issues. We found out later she was only a few streets down from our house (6 hours from her house, 1 hour from wedding location) at a drug dealers house. She had apparently been bitching about us which tipped the dealer off that she was related to my husband who he worked with.

Even those who intend to show up (such as myself) would decline bc a celebration should not include a business tactic to minimise monetary loss or increase monetary gains.

I can’t believe these brides-to-be! I always thought it was traditional for the bridesmaids to pay for their dress and shoes, and throw some sort of “modest” bridal shower or kitchen tea. That’s it. I could never afford the outrageous demands these women are putting on their friends/family, nor would I want to. My brother married into a family whose culture was much different from ours in terms of cash gifts…etc….for the happy couple. We just stuck to what was normal for us, and that’s all the bride and groom expected. No drama.

I feel you!!! Only in my case it is my older brother and sister. Admittedly I was a A-1 screw up in my teens. After my mom passed away as a kid I kinda went hog wild. Drinking and getting stoned daily. My mom was a control freak and extremely judgmental. And my dad was a really kind hearted guy. He tried as he may to stop my bad behavior. But realized I wasn’t going to quit until I was ready and forcing treatment would lead to nothing but my anger and resentment. And me possibly going in on harder drugs. So he just let it go and instead just gave me unconditional love. He refused to hand out money. And I knew it was futile to even ask. But when I went clean at 20 years old he let me do it at home. And my sister and brother both told him it was a sham. And that in a month or less I would be back at it. That was 24 years ago. And I haven’t smoked or drank since. But they are still waiting on the other shoe to drop and me fall back into my old habits. I saw my brother at Walmart cashing a check. And he actually said that I was dead to him. And he got out of line just to avoid having to be near me. The weird thing is I never did them wrong. I was good enough to babysit for them and give my sisters kids rides to school. But I wasn’t invited to her second wedding and they returned my wedding invitation. But showed up for the free bar and food.

I've been in about 5 weddings... I paid for all of my dresses and shoes, but I've never had to have my hair or make-up done... maybe just up vs. down for hair... and the bride always gave some kind of bridesmaid's gift, like matching necklaces or the such. My cousin even gave all her bridesmaids an individual choice on dresses. She picked a designer (not crazy expensive) and the color black and let us pick which dress fit our personality and bodies. :)

My parents helped with our wedding because they wanted to and we were grateful for that. One of our friends paid for the DJ as a wedding present. We were in our 30’s when we got married so we didn’t need a whole bunch of stuff to start life together. So we did a honey moon fund instead of gifts and just asked folks to give what they could towards different parts of that.
