The South African boy seemed to succeed at everything he did. He started in the family business of hair salons but knew it wasn’t his dream. He moved to the UK to pursue acting instead. Comedies weren’t his first roles, but they were where he truly shined. The Carry On team noticed and asked him to join when Ted Ray left. He stayed on for 19 films and got top billing in 17 of them. He was one of the main draws to the series. Viewers flocked to see him play lovable, womanizing rogues.
Sid succeeded after leaving the team. He continued acting nonstop until years of drinking and smoking caught up with him.The world was shocked when this major name died in a way befitting of his legacy. He collapsed on stage due to a heart attack. The audience thought it was part of the show, but it soon became much more tragic.
Sid is remembered fondly today, and critics have changed their minds about him. He’s been honored in films and an upcoming documentary. His commemorative plaque was even stolen to protect it.
Despite these honors, there are dark spots in his legacy. He was unable to avoid the darker sides of the world of fame. He essentially became obsessed with them in a way that affected him and his family forever.

''Moved to the UK in December 1976?'' ...I think that was supposed to be 1946..He really was not moving much after April 1976.
That (1976) got me also
You are right ,I saw the carry on films in the 50s and 60s.
There’s being witty and there’s being shitty....
I think your one is on the smelly side 🙄
😂😂😂😂
They make mistakes like this on purpose to get players to comment my man, welcome to the dark side Luke.
Loved 'Bless this house'...funny man indeed
There will never be another Sid. RIP and thanks for all the laughs
I'm only 68 but l certainly remember those days. He always knew how to make you laugh. I wish television was the same these days. The world would be a lot better place with his wit. RIP.
It was the writing.
You're ONLY 68!?
I admire your stoic optimism.
But then; I'm only 74 ... and counting.
I don’t think the Carry on Films would’ve been so good without Sid. He kept the series so popular so much he was my favourite out of all the stars.
Agreed he was the daddy of them all in the series
i grew up watching Sid James and he always made me laugh! and not many folk had that ability. i do miss him but at least i've got my fond memories of him and he still makes me laugh - there was only one Sid James - a true legend - respect.
Bless you Sid. As a young man in the seventies I had an obsession with Barbara Windsor too. Can’t think why.
My favourite Sid moment was that line from one of the carry on films where Joan Sims says she would invite him in for a tea, but for the neighbours. To which Sid replies "its not worth it just for a cup of tea" then as he's leaving he says "bloody neighbors". I loved that.
Carry On At Your Convenience(1971)
Favourite memory was as Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond in Carry On Up The Khyber.
One of our favorites too, you've got fine taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
@@FactsVerseUK This is a fascinating channel and I remember most of this content. How about a look at some classic British dramas like The Main Chance, Callan, The Prisoner, The Power Game, Public Eye, Man In A Suitcase, Danger Man/The Prisoner, A Family At War, Upstairs Downstairs? There was also a kids program I was fond of called 5 O'Clock Club.
He always played himself in the carry on films. He allegedly also pioneered product placement in the carry on films, secretly without the producers knowing. He did this by contacting a manufacturer telling them that a new carry on film was planned and offered for a fee to plant one of their products in the film.
A talented actor/comedian who was very uniform in his delivery. Hancock brought out the best in him.
Hancock was talentless.
Galton and Simpson as they wrote it, surely.
Great feel good comedy. I thought he was an Australian. D'oh!
He was an Israeli.
Loved his cheeky laugh and sence of humour.always delivered a great performance.R.I.P.
The dirty laugh for sure. Never heard another quite like it. Even as a kid seeing his work, it seemed obvious that he was playing himself.
Personally I think Hancock's Half Hour was the best thing he ever did. The chemistry between the two clashing personalities was a magical formula.
He's pretty good in a small role in the Ealing comedy "The Titfield Thunderbolt" as Harry, the traction engine driver. Pretty sure he has a role in another called "The Lavender Hill Mob", but as you say, playing as himself, always with one eye on some new money racket in Hancock's Half Hour is brilliant 😊
Hancock was so unfunny.
@@JamesRichards-mj9kw Unfunny to those who don't get him.
@@TallSilentGuy He was just an unfunny closet case.
@@JamesRichards-mj9kw You certainly have a way with subjective truths and unsubstantiated allegations, don't you? 🙂
Great era and Great artists, Rest in Peace Sid.
1:05 he moved to the UK in December 1946 not December 1976.
3:23 the Carry Ons didn't start until 1958. Sid James was in them from 1960-1974.
5:28 Ronnie Knight not Robbie Knight.
🤔👍 Yes, but let's not let the truth get in the way of a good story !......
Never heard of a film called Trapseasy 😂
I know there are a lot of things wrong. FactsVerseUK always seem to get quite a few of these things wrong.
@robinburn4974 He should have said TRAPEZE.
Absolutely loved him in the Carry On films, That laugh of his always had me in hysterics, so funny 😄😄
RIP Sid 🙏🙏
His character made the films!
One of the best characters ever, I salute you Sid.
Ronnie Knight was Barbara's husband. NOT ROBBIE!
Sid had a heart attack due to a photo finish at the 2.30 at Cheltenham
1946 he moved to England / he was a great comical genius loved to watch him as a kid with my family ,way back when people sat around a table for lunch ,dinner etc ,never be another Sid James xx
Cohen funded the murder of British civilians by Lehi and the Irgun.
That video took me back 😢thought of our mom and dad as me my sister and our parents always watched Hancock's ha ha half hour loved it ❤
Bless this House was great. Also, Man about the House, with Richard O'Sullivan was also fantastic.
They were unfunny garbage. People watched any unfunny racist filth when there were only 3 channels.
All the top tier Carry On's starred Sid, in my opinion. Up The Khyber, Cleo, Abroad, Doctor etc. The exception is Screaming which he wasn't in
There was a film I really enjoyed. Which sid was in called, hell drivers .
It was garbage.
I remember that, didn't it have Stanley Baker in it?
@@StickyBud9395 yes. You're right 👍
@@StickyBud9395 Awful, stupid film.
Yeah that was a good film.
Old Steak and Kidney what a character he had all vices.
He wasn't a barber but a ladies hairstylist , his agent advised him to keep it quiet as Sid always seemed to play spives,
So many memories of Sid as a child growing up 👍
"Moved from South Africa to the UK in 1976 when WW2 was over?"
This video is well researched. So well researched that there is a shot of Cape Town at 0:29 when Sid James was born in Johannesburg. You also don't mention the fact that once he became a star, he returned to SA to make a movie called TOKOLOSHE.
He was a larger than life character who was definitely a womaniser a gambler and sometimes a drunk, but he had a way of making us all love him and forgive his faults and now we greatly miss his laugh and smile once he had departed this world. He would have stood no chance in this cancel culture WOKE world, I'm just so glad I was one of those who enjoyed what he did, and even thought the WOKE brigade will no doubt write him out of history, who cares,? I know which reality I would rather live in.
He punched pregnant women.
You can’t even punch a pregnant woman any more without being called a racist.
@@JamesRichards-mj9kw ,
He struck (not punched) only TWO pregnant women, and they were both in a relationship with him.
You make it sound like he goes around punching random pregnant women! Stop being so wOkE!! /sarc
@@StevenGreenGuz Cohen punched pregnant women on a regular basis.
The 'Woke Brigade' might WELL write him out of THEIR history!
They're in NO position to write him out of everyone ELSE'S!
Really he moved to the United Kingdom in December 1976 , That would have been a miracle as was dead by then having died several months earlier,
As with all the 'facts' in FactsVerseUK's contributions, it's often not factual. I'm reminded of one where a TV programme called 'Zee Cars' was mentioned. In English it's ZED Cars, why on earth an American thinks he can pontificate accurately about British entertainment, about which he obviously knows virtually nothing, is beyond me!
Yanks no doubt know all about "NIXON OF DO GREEN " LOL
"Trapsezee" 🤣
It's very unusual to hear that his age of death and at that age is no age to die at well I think all the carry on films he did were brilliant he seemed to fit the bill in and on the film's there's one that stands out and that's carry on up your convenience and his role was sid boggle and when he had that budgie winning the horse races in the paper and he goes to work with a new car and good clothes on that day well missed sid James good all rounder in the carry on films.😊
Cohen had almost died in 1967.
I don't ever remember Sid James as a young man. To me, he always looked old no matter what I watched him in. I think it was his craggy looks that made him look old to me. I grew up watching Sid James, as he was a big part of my life back then.
Get the facts right lol😅
Sunderland:
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave…
His "laugh" spoke volumes about him.
Apparently Sid moved to the UK when he was already in his late fifties.
Hardly, he was only 62 when he died, granted he did look about 85.
I love sid james he was a very good comidian it the carry ons i loved his cackles and laughs also the sneaky looks miss him r i p 😢😮❤
Knight was "connected", but Babs had background.
My fav memory of sid ,was playing the part of dick turpin highwayman ,carry on dick most people think its the funniest of ,all carry on films 😂
mickharrison9004
It was hilarious, Sid playing two parts and all.
can anyone tell me who got top billing in the other 2 carry on movies?
Well made but what was the dark obsession?
How can this be called "Factverse"?! You talk about Johannesburg, you show a picture of Cape Town. You talk about Kroonstad, you show a pic from Jo'burg. Best of all, you claim he moved to London in the year the war ended (1976!), when he was already dead!
Exactly same end for tommy cooper .
They lived a similar life style.
I remember that, I watched it the night Tommy Cooper died, thought it was part of his act at first, then realised when he didn't move, It was serious, Very funny man 🙏🙏
RIP Tommy Cooper 🙏🙏
@@user-pv4kl5zz3y yes all very sad the way they both went ,what we do know is with today's comedians the same won't happen ,not built the same and will be well out of it before there ends .
@@HektorBandimar yes for sure they did as also did many people in society back then ,was a different world a much better one .
mickharrison9004
And Leonard Rossiter ,sadly.
Loads of date-related errors in this, which makes me question the validity of the whole clip.
he also got warned by a london gangster for going near the gangsters mrs. who was also in the carry on movies and later eastenders, oh whats her name? Cockney, blonde hair.
1976? Syd appeared in radio and tv productions during the 1960's in the UK he was in Hancock's half hour and all kinds, you are incorrect about '76 sunshine
1976?
Yeah.He moved in with Robbie Knight...:)
Husband 'Robbie Knight' = Ronnie Knight.
The voiceover speaker would do well to SLOW down ... just because you can't SEE commas/pauses, DOESN'T mean they aren't THERE!
It's computer generated. Maybe even using AI given the errors in these videos.
I heard somewhere he was a bad gambler which ,as many know is a very grim and wired vice ,which damages you most with loved ones turning gamblers into , compulsive liars and lose respect of everyone such a shame ,when he died hardly had a penny which considering what he did should of had a fortune .
So Sid James moved to the UK in 1976? The same year he died. Did he move to the UK before or after he died?
B.S. He would have moved to the UK a long time before 1976.
"Top billing in 15 Carry On films from 1955 to 1960"? Uh?
He’s life even seems like a carry on movie on roids 😂
thats her Barbara Windsor.
We didn't ask to know these personal things about actors back then. Not our business. Still don't want to know. The sound is off as I write this. RIP and thankyou to all of them.
...interesting 'script' written here............................. The Wikipedia page is identical............
'Small Back Room', a Michael Powell film, not 'Small Black Room'
His obsession wasn't dark. She was blonde.
Sidney
At 1 minute 3 seconds: 'he moved to the UK in 1976 after WW2?! 🙄 Facts, you say?
if he was born in 1913 and moved to uk in 1976 how come he appered in films in 1947
Trapsezee? You mean Trapeze
That 1976 date is a bit off.
ANOTHER MISTAKE GOT TOP BILLING ON CARRY ONS FROM 1955 TO 1960 BAD RESEARCH
"Moved to England in 1976? " Did he move in with ROBBIE Knight?
😅
😊
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse UK?
He was never really a boxer, how come all famous people pretend the were boxers when all they ever did was spar a few rounds in school. Probably the managers saying it will help the cv
Yes he was, and quite a handy one.
@@bwilson5401 He wasn’t, do your research, loads of actors say they did boxing etc to enhance their cv.
@@bwilson5401 Academy Award for best script. From that moment on Sid appeared in a number of impressive films and was eventually offered a starring role in 'The Square Ring' in which he played the owner of a boxing ring. It was one of a number of films that Sid used to propagate the misconception that he had, prior to his showbiz career, earned a living in the boxing ring. There's no doubt that Sid was quick with his fists whenever it suited him, but in reality he'd never been anything more than a bar-room brawler. Still, the legend was good for the image.
I think your date of him moving to UK. In 1976. Is wrong. He was here a lot sooner than that
Trap-ze-ze.
He punched pregnant women.
Oh come on. Who hasn’t punched a pregnant woman at least once? It’s a known fact that their pregnancy hormones make them like it - Google it.
@@ManGoatHamburger Cohen should have been prosecuted.
moved to the uk in 1976??? thats wrong
He became involved with barbara windsor which didnt
Help his marriage!
Especially when Babs other half was a notorious gangster.
So many mistakes switched off quite early.
Cohen admitted punching pregnant women.
Just wish an American wouldn't make a video of a British actor.
Barbara Windsor wasn't married to Robbie Knight but Ronny Knight. So many so-called facts are wrong or omitted.
Cohen was an Israeli.
WHAT??? He moved to the UK i n1976 ?????? Utter Bollocks!
Can’t even get dates right never mind besmirching a great talent with a click bait title.
Oh vey
Overstuffed with stock footage.
If you’re going to make a presentation then get your facts right.
He moved to the UK in 1976 when his time in the war was over??? What??? He was pretty much moved to England by the 1950s where his acting career began. He died in 1976. This is very badly researched.
I doubt it was 1976 !! More like 46 !!
hey, you got your fact wrong, Sid Moved to England in 1946, not 1976 as you state in this video. You need to take this video down and give real factual information, not false information. do you fact checking not once but twice, okay!
" Moved to the UK in December 1976 when the war was over" at 1:05......I think not
DON'T RECOMMEND CHANNEL ✅
he was a creep
How can you take these seriously when they can’t even get the facts right. 1976???? He DIED in 1976 !!
1976? if ya cannae get this right , how can I trust anything else on this feed? 2 /10 must try harder.
I have respect for the man and his family but as a comedian he was weak.Bless this house ,bless us all as bad as on the buses.Rising Damp was more my cup of tea.
Clueless click bait
Never liked him.
You must hate him, to bother to come and make a comment on someone you didn't like, if I dislike someone I don't bother commenting.
@@StickyBud9395 Cohen often punched pregnant women.
@@JamesRichards-mj9kw If that's true, he was a horrible person.
Moved to the UK in 1976? He'd been famous in the UK since the 1950s.
fubbish
Get your facts straight. Dreadful video.
