Many fans of the Carry-On films consider Charles Hawtrey to be one of the outstanding members of the cast, this curious little man in goggle glasses with a thin quirky look - often receiving third billing, with only Sid James and Kenneth Williams in front of him - but was it enough for Charles?
In this video we will explore Charles Hawtrey’s beginnings as a child star of the silent era, a performer in Revue, and a regular in the popular Will Hay films but what really happened to this extraordinary actor - how did he go from working closely with Vivien Leigh the wife of Sir Laurence Olivier - to becoming a belligerent recluse in Deal on the Kent coast, where his jolly high camp flamboyant personality gave way to resentment and alcoholism.
I take flowers to Mortlake Crematorium the final resting place of Charles Hawtrey who was scattered on the rose bed - and we will take a walk through his life to discover more about the man with an unusual style of comedy brilliance built on a foundation of talent, ego, eccentricity, and notoriety.

His delivery of "Oh Hello" is supreme. He always made me smile and was a hugely talented English comedian. He, alongside Kenny Williams, has to be treasured. Thank you for keeping his name alive and remembered. He was one of the greats.

You asked about The Army Game which was on TV in the late 50s early 60s the others I can remember the was the short Actor Alfie Bass,Harry Fowler, Michael Medwin and Bill Frazer who played Sargent Claude Smudge with Alfie Baseremember

I read that he died a broken man and at his funeral none of his 'friends' came, the only one who was there - was the crematorium cleaner and few complete strangers.......what an appaling end to such a wonderful career. So very sad🙁 He lived life alone and ended it............alone😔

@@johnhamilton2213 Charles Hawtrey - A Flamboyantly Wasted Life 1704pm 1.9.23 my parents had them on tv when i was a child - the carry on films. i'd sit and watch - if it was raining outdoors but........................................................... i was just left frowning. i stil sit and frown, even now. i did try to watch the carry on screaming film. made a point of sitting down to see it. recall some people talking about it when it was first shown on tv. i thought I'd missed a horror film. it's the back end of soft porn cartoon humour or the barber's shop dad's and lad's mentality. all that supressed sexual angst........................................................................................................maybe.................................... different era different humour, they say. i couldn't get my head round on the buses, either. though i can tolerate George and Mildred and likely lads and citizen smith etc etc.... dunno. maybe dirty postcard humour isn't my cup of tea....? i mean people have had ample opportunity tio get to the effin point regards a great many things. thank you for allowing me to get my inconsolable and, seeming, inexplicable misgivings about carry on films off of my (ooooo, errr) chest.... pete and dud summed it up when pete suggested i dont arf fancy your one and rushing round to give her one..... which is gettin' to the point and is sooooo refreshing, dont you think re: humour? so the next time you get into an argument with a contrary type tell him that bedroom ceiling could do with a bit of plastering - see, as i did, his face drop...

I will ask - how random are your choices, with reference to scrutiny? how much do you edit out? how studiously researched are these skits? I was wondering how interlinked are the lives of these people re: who they worked with, who they associated with, who employed them etc? at the end of the day it's either hawtrey or milf chat... I never visited the Norman wisdom pub... but if cranky maladjusted hawtrey drank about Walmer and deal, I think I had a few pints in the pubs he would have frequented. was told to light the fire in one pub. was served a free pint in another etc etc... Nice place, Kent. beware the poisoners, though.................................................. and pickled eggs.

I love the carry on films. They evoke the britain of yesteryear, the seaside postcard humour, and British life and sense of humour, sadly all gone now. It’s a tragedy what has happened to britain in the last 25 years.

There’s a lot about British Life in the era of Carry On that we are well rid off. Too much nostalgia with rose tinted spectacles over idealises the past
Charles Hawtrey was one of my favourite actors in the Carry On films, the one where he was in a hospital bed being visited by his pregnant wife, maybe Carry On Doctor, he had all the pregnancy symptoms, so funny.
Yes, I remember that one. Your comment has me giggling with the memory of that image of Charles experiencing his wife’s pregnancy. I loved all the Carry On films and all the Carry On cast 💞😂😂😂
Clearly his sexuality was the reason for his seclusion and with a high and mighty it was inevitable he wouldn't be popular with folk. However a legend in his own right.

I love the fact that Kenny Williams called him a Slut!
Also in later life he lived in Deale, home to the Royal Marine band. When his flat caught fire he was found stripped in the arms of a young bandsman! 😂❤😅
He also did a lot of work for childrens charities. He was a lovely man- a founding father of Camp comedy.
I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up gay in a time when it was shamed as a sickness that was punishable with prison for practicing, but I have to wonder whether he was also on the autistic spectrum before high functioning autism was recognised. He was certainly very talented and I will always remember him the most in Carry On movies.
Thank you so much for your comment - I agree, I think there would have been more going on for Charles and it is possible that he was autistic but it's difficult to say without a medical diagnosis - it was awful era in terms of being gay - Charles had a lot to cope with while being in the public eye, including his mother's dementia - while also trying to earn a living and sustain a career x thank you for watching xx
In my eyes Charlie was a star. I loved him and Kenneth Williams in the Carry On Films.
Both men were never given the credit or recognition they rightfully deserved for the great talent they possessed.
My daughter shares her Birthday with Charles Hawtrey albeit 102 years apart.
Farmer - "Have you ever been with my daughter before?"
Hawtry - "Actually, no. But if the offer still holds..."

Exactly the same could be said of Kenneth Williams for similar reasons. Neither had anything in life except their mothers and their sexuality, this in an age when self-hatred was expected of homosexuals, who were then treated as criminals. It is interesting that Barbara Windsor was a good friend of both, and both despised the Carry On films which were the source of their fame.
I keep coming back to this episode, because it is such a joy. Poor Charles was such a bizarre gentleman, even so you showed his memory respect and dignity.

My wife met him in Welshpool when she was young (in the early 70's). She said he was lovely and nothing like the media reports on his angry drunken behaviour. But as I said, she was young. He had many demons but who hasn't? Nice presentation and a cracking summary … thanks
It's very sad to hear that Charles was so happy on-screen and lonely off ,when you watch the carry ons Charles had a presence on these films and would be missed if he wasn't in them and he deserves just as much credit as Sid James and Kenneth Williams ❤

Charles Hawtrey was the best actor in the carry on films.
In my opinion, Joan Sims deserves that accolade - Belle, in Cowboy, the prudish girlfriend in Camping. She was so under-rated and under appreciated.
Lived in Deal for many years, nobody had a good word to say about him. Sad really.

He rather comes across as someone who thought very highly of himself, felt thwarted by the lack of stardom, and considered the rest of the cast of Carry-On to be utterly beneath him. The episode of him dressing extravagantly on the beach and mocking the locals in Deale sounds like he didn't want to admit that he was slumming it in front of forner colleagues.
Lots of comedians have sad lives...They are good actors and are just playing a part...Thank you Charles Hawtrey...

It seems some actors can lose their true selves after playing many roles. After all, who is one, when one can wear any cloak they choose?
Many thanks for this. I remember him right back from his Army Game days. (There are DVDs available, but check the details before you buy as he wasn't in the later episodes.) Way back in the 70's, a mate of mine was out and about with the lads in Sheffield and as they passed the Grand Hotel, Charles was spotted walking up the steps of the main entrance. One guy shouted out to the others and pointed. On hearing his name, Charles turned, smiled and shouted "goodnight boys".

Beautifully made. Suffering with a horrible Covid bout I have been forced to isolate and watch endless movies and turned to the “Carry On” series of my youth which was spent in England. I’ll never forget watching CH in “Carry on Nurse” (I think) and wetting my trousers watching him conduct silently to some classical music he was listening to! Very nostalgic all this. I left England for good in 1995 and now live in NZ but I still miss the England of my childhood and youth…

For me Charles was always my favourite Carry On actor. Without him the films were lacking something vital for me. I feel sad that he didn't have a happier life as he brought so many laughs to others.

In the mid 60s Charles was often seen in Wimbledon riding a ladies bike with a basket on the handlebars. Wearing kaki shorts, long hooped socks and a flamboyant shirt. Looking please with himself if someone recognised him. But riding off with his nose in the air if anyone approached him. We all assumed that he was living in Wimbledon, as a lot of actors did at that time.
A truly troubled soul yet once if front of the camera you would never know how this man suffered from his demons. A talented actor and a true star of "Carry on" I have the complete Carry on set that I watch weekly. As a rule I never watch documentaries about the actors personal lives as I want to remember them for their screen presence. But you did a wonderful job of presenting Charlie even though troubled in a beautiful compassionate way. Thank you

Charles Hawtrey, despite his peculiar and abrasive personality offscreen, will, I'm sure, be remembered forever with great fondness.
I remember watching the Army Game in the 1950s with my father an ex Army man and it was very funny at the time. It featured many army conscript jokes that the ex conscripted soldiers at the time all understood and loved .

Lovely balanced review of his life. It's a shame that his off-screen persona was so contrasting to the on-screen one, no-one should pass away that alone. But yes, let's celebrate the entertainment value of the chap we saw on screen, he was one of a kind.

His life parallels that of Kenneth Williams. Both died alone and in mental torment. He was a product of the times. The experience of gay men back then was the same as that of Oscar Wilde, half a century earlier. Hiding behind a facade, terrified of exposure, no wonder so many gay men were actors, they had done it all their lives.
Police officers used to visit public toilets in plain clothes to entrap gay men. Imagine that happening today....
Alan Carr, Tom Allen, and many others proudly proclaim their sexuality, back in the 50's and 60's that would be professional suicide and risk a prison sentence. No wonder their mental health was so precarious

As it's 65 years since the Carry On series started, BBC Radio 4Extra had a full day devoted to them, with old interviews, anecdotes, clips, CVs. Charles was not mentioned in glowing terms though, as noted here. It's a damned shame that none of the cast received residuals, as the films became popular worldwide, year after year, and the producers must have earned £Millions.
( My very first date, aged 14, was going to see Carry On Camping! I think that's the only one I ever saw on the big screen )
He never got over Will Hay passing in 1949, will made him in his films and radio later and thought fondly of him, don't forget he also starred in Good Morning Boys & the goose steps out with will
Charles Hawtrey , a star who instantly provided movie magic to every scene , his chemistry was infectious and our laughter was his reward . His cameo appearance in the movie 'What a Whopper' (1961) is an absolute gem .

Although Charles didn't get top billing in the carry on films and elsewhere,he in many peoples minds stole the scenes in everyone he was in,and whether he came to despise the films or not,the fact is he brightened up peoples days whenever he appeared. 😂
I was very lucky to meet him when I was a young child when I was around 7 or 8 year old. His flight from Prestwick had been delayed. He had visited a hotel I was at with my mother when he walked in. I recognised him from TV and went across and asked him for his autograph. He was a true gentleman and gave his wonderful smile and gave me his autograph. He was so polite and friendly.

I absolutely loved the Carry On films as a kid and still do! Charles was ruined by alcohol sadly. Kenny Williams has some things to say about him in his fantastic diaries 😊

They were - although Kenneth complained about Charles in his diaries - but then he complained about everyone 😂 Kenneth also visited Charles in Deal - and Charles claimed that his favourite people were Kenneth and Barbara Windsor. x
Charles enjoyed his life unlike Kenneth repressive nature.
The close relationship Charlie had with his Mother mirrors Kenny Williams and his Mum.
Likewise jimmy Saville.

I couldn't care less about his problems, personal life or dislike for others. The guy was and still is an acting legend amongst us fans. Growing up watching characters and shows/movies involving Charles Hawtrey, Sir Norman Wisdom, Leonard Rossiter, Steptoe & Son, Laurel & Hardy, On the Buses and George & Mildew wre my best memories from childhood. Great video, shame you didn't have a clip of his singing that you mentioned.

@@heli-crewhgs5285 He/she meant "George and Mildred", a spin off comedy from "Man About The House", starring Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce. "Mildew" is a type of mold, and was the nickname given to Mildred by George's dodgy friend (who's name I can't recall) who was played by the brilliant Roy Kinear.
So sad a talented actor was so exploited. He was a star as soon as he opened his mouth ....
Charles was a supremely talented actor who worked hard & achieved highly. A tortured soul & phenomenally lonely. Ironic that he brought so much laughter & happiness to millions.

Charles was also a terrific Piano player. A short example can be seen in the "Pub Scene " in "Passport to Pimlico".
I'm amazed more use was not made of his talent.

The scene in “don’t lose your head” where Hawtrey ascends the scaffold with a dirty laugh, then delivers a couple of killer punchlines.
That scene is comedy gold. Right up there with Hancock, Sellers, Only Fools and Fawlty Towers.
He was brilliant - and I believe in that film he had Joan in constant fits of laughter! She found it difficult to manage her scenes and not lose control lol xxxxx

I know its petty, and im probably wrong, but sounds more like Sid James. He was the dirty laugh specialist. Hawtrey makes the joke about reading the letter later. But it doesnt matter. Im a pedant. Its interesting how times have changed really. In todays times he would have been #me too'd as a peado. Thankfully the media was much less sensationalist back then. And social media certainly helped.
I have been meaning to find a Charles Hawtrey doc for YEARS but have always got bogged down with the crap of the modern era of nonsense. Yet, somehow, this thumbnail popped up to remind me?! INCREDIBLE!
I always found his concentration levels jarring and yet at the same time part of his likeability. By that I mean he CONSTANTLY looked at the camera as if reading his lines below or looking for affirmation that he was funny. He was funny NO DOUBT!

I had a chance to speak with Peter Rogers not long before his death and after we had concluded the business we had been engaged in: he sat and told me stories about his dealings with certain members of the 'Carry On' team. He claimed he absolutely detested most of them and evidence of this was to be found in the casting decisions made during the late 1960's and into the 1970's, with the parts written for the actors deliberately and viciously lampooning their real-life weaknesses and foibles. Charles Hawtrey's role as Dan, Dan the Lavatory Man in Carry On Screaming was one of these. For a man whose fortune was made working with these staples of British comedy, his attitude horrified me.

Great video! Fair and balanced. Charles Hawtrey was obviously an introvert and extremely shy. Such people are misunderstood by almost everyone as they mistake this for aloofness, which it most definitely isn't. That combined with homosexuality and alcoholism, it is amazing that he achieved what he did.

I wonder if Hawtrey may have been an undiagnosed Autistic? His quirks and social awkwardness would point to that possibility.

@@johnmc3862 Many performers and comedians in fact can be quite shy and withdrawn in normal life. I've made my living as a full-time university lecturer and part-time instructor, and am and look confident and talkative in front of a class, but can be inhibited in day to day exchanges. I am not of course an actor or comedian but often feel in my element before a class or crowd.
My mum and dad took me to see my first carry on film in 1969 , Carry On Camping . I was eight and I was hooked on the films after that lol.
I love those films . Its true that behind a clowns face many a tear is shed.
I thought Charles Hawtrey was brilliant, and I still do.
It seems the more amazing and funny the character the sadder the private life , Kennith Williams being another brilliant and funny soul.
I still watch them now as a pick me up if I feel down.
I watched them with the family growing up too - very happy memories! And I still turn to them for a pick me up as well - you can't fail to laugh - they were brilliant - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it's greatly appreciated! xxxx
Carry on Camping has always been my favourite.
I’m afraid to say he reminds me of myself during a stage I went through where I knew I could unintentionally offend any more sensitive folk I talked with, but got so tired of staying in, being picked on, or apologising, that I decided to be boisterously irreverently honest to all, and friendly only with the ones who laughed (usually the more naive/young).
It wasn’t till late in life that I was finally diagnosed with autism, and understood where I lacked the ability to empathise with certain others and how that might cause offence.
I wonder if Charles was just undiagnosed?

1988, I was 8 years old, I never knew he died that long ago, I enjoyed the carry on movies as a Child growing up in Ireland.
Fascinating and wonderful tribute to Charles Hawtrey.
Can't believe no family or friends attended his funeral.
Too many Men are too attached to their Mothers, look at Elvis Presley , he went off the rails after his Mother died of Alcoholism not helped by the fact he was in Germany and she couldn't bear it.
Some Mothers really need to cut the Apron strings and encourage their Son's to mix with other kids and make friends. Living with your Mother as an Adult is never good and I don't mean that in a bad way because you'll always be treated like a Child.
I do agree with you but I have to say I was unable to find many details of his relationship with his mother growing up - what was apparent though is that young Charles was actually quite popular and would have the local children in his garden when he was very young and he would sing, act, dance etc - put on plays with them too - so it's hard to identify where it all went wrong for him xx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre The drink probably didn't help much especially in later years and probably made him depressed as excessive alcohol can do, perhaps he suffered from severe depression which was never treated.

I lived in Dover and heard from locals that Charles Hawtry was disliked by people and that he was very rude and insulting. Having always loved watching him in the Carry On films, I found this hard to believe but watching your excellent video, it's obvious he was an almost jekyll and Hyde character. I also worked at Buckland Hospital for many years making this whole video of real interest to me.
"The Carry On's" are a Great British Institution made when comedy was funny. I still watch them today and roar with laughter. All the cast were perfect for the characters they portrayed and Charles Hawtrey was one of the best.
I'm nearly 70 now and can remember Charles Hawtrey in films from my childhood.
He was great! He did so much more than just the Carry Ons xxxx
Those Carry On movies lit up my childhood 😂...watched with my dear Dad...the first person I ever saw laughing through tears😂😂...great memories.

Hawtrey had a massive chip on his shoulder a very unpleasant man. He never got over that he'd not be ahead liner like Sid James and Kenneth Williams. He was never going to be other than supporting cast and that's what his problem was. His mother was always making out he was going to be a major star. He was also a horrible drunk who was unpleasant to anyone who went near him.

And he did have a sad ending but he’s brought me many smiles along with the rest of the actors in the carry ons

Loved the Carry On Films. He was right up there with the rest. My daughter who is 33yrs old always puts a Carry on Film on when she is a bit down, but it has to be one with Charles in it, or she won't watch it. Lovely story telling as always. Thanks.

This is an excellent retrospective. Thank you. To be frank, Charles was one of the better performers in the Carry On line up. A strange looking individual, who looked right at home in the farcical, outdated world of innuendo and tired old jokes. Sid James in drag was not a patch on Charles Hawtrey playing it straight. This brought back some happy memories..
In the early 70's I was a dancer with the Elwy Juveniles at the Gaiety Theatre in Rhyl where Mr Hawtrey would visit the cast ...
( Aubrey Philips, Paul and Danny Denver,Georgina Staples,Dot on the organ and Roy Rolland to name but a few...)
We were always given strict instructions not to speak to him or ask for an autograph.
He appeared quiet,eccentric and polite.

We are what we are. To me, this man was very funny in the Carry On's and was a much needed cog in that team of funny people. If you can make people smile n laugh, you have a gift, which he had, despite what was happening in his life. He gets a 🥇from me.

My parents and use to go to see The Carry On Movies beginning the summer I turned 13. Charles Hawtrey was hilarious! My heart goes out to him for all the suffering he endured.

Very nice presentation on dear Charles Hawtrey ...a complete one off film comedian in his singular style. Very bad that the Carry On team including Charles got no royalties. Those films went on for years supporting British TV.

Grew up with the Carry On movies; together with Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey always was the true core and heart of them.
Before watching, I had no idea at all, what kind of life he actually had. It is so terribly saddening . This wonderful artist has gifted my younger self so many joyful evenings in front of the television. He should have had a more joyful time on this Earth himself.

Fabulous tribute to a comedy legend I came to adore during my childhood in Ireland watching and laughing with my family in the many Carry on movies that we watched multiple times through the years, you were always top of the bill I in our home Charlie along with Sid, Kenneth and Barbara RIP to them all and RIP to real comedy which seems to have passed away in recent times also.

I have to say I can’t name a modern comedian that comes anywhere near the likes of the Carry On cast and others from that era - I think there are too many rules and regulations now for them to be truly creative and funny ❤

Thanks for this video. Charles Hawtrey is one of those old British actors who are in danger of becoming forgotten to time. I always loved his appearances in the Carry On films- Mr Widdle being one character and of course the famous line in Carry On Camping "I can't get my pole up" As kids we fell about laughing at the double entendres.

Until I saw this video thumbnail on RUclips I had forgotten about Charles Hawtrey, however his photo bought back many memories of how funny this brilliant actor was.
He may have been strange in the extreme at times... but boy, he was funny. I loved his silliness in all the "carry ons"... and i still miss his character. Gay or not, i loved his antics...and still do. Rest In Peace PTE Widdle ( carry on up the khyber).
