I lived in Deal at the time he was resident. A friend of mine became a close friend of Charles. My friend Anthony had nothing but praise and admiration for Charles. However Charles was seen a somewhat colorful but distant character amongst the Deal residents. I believe he lived in one of the old fisherman’s cottages at the north end of Deal.

Hawtrey lived in a top floor flat close to the centre of Deal. I know, because my then girlfriend who lived in Deal pointed the flat out to me. Yes, he was very rude to admirers who approached him on the street. He would entertain men from the barracks in his flat causing complaints because of the noise they made..

A very talented man unafraid to act out his characters that were considered by many to outrageous. He brought pleasure to millions and it is sad that he died lonely and yet to be fully appreciated.

I've read a number of comments in the past, from people who knew him. The general consensus was that he was not a very nice person in real life. I think, in fact, that this shows a little in his acting roles, which often show a somewhat waspish undertone to his roles. It's such a shame as I think that he was an underrated actor. I suspect that it was the less pleasant parts of his character, rather than a lack of acting ability, that held him back.
It is somewhat ironic that he turned his back on his working class background, yet had, it is said, a penchant for "rough trade". I wonder if that was the result of an insecurity in his social standing, which made him want to be superior to his "partners".
He was a truly complex man who gave a great deal of pleasure through his acting, yet seemed to have little pleasure in his own life.
    RIP Charles Hawtrey.

I don't give a damn about his "effeminacy" so called. He made me laugh over many years and films. I respect him for his comedic ability. His end truly saddens me.

Well, John Lennon mentioned him on comments that were tagged on to the Beatles song Two of Us. I didn't know who he was, now I do. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Hooray. Came to say the same. Nothing worse than a polished American who never knew of the guy reciting lines from a script. Cold and means nothing.

You have to realise that at the time homosexuality was illegal and the law dealt harshly with them. This led to many brilliant actors living hidden and lonely lives. There is often pathos underlying their performance. So sad.

A school friend was in panto in Glasgow with him, said he was rude, aggressive even swearing at the children, so let's not look at those in the past with rose coloured glasses on. I always thought of him as I would Jimmy savile.

So in other words you just dislike him and you’re wrapping it in something else. He is not remotely anything like JS. He has never been accused of anything. How disgusting a comparison. Whether he was nasty doesn’t mean he assaulted people.
