  • I hope you enjoy my first longer form documentary style video. I've been wanting to make this for a while. If you’ve seen any of my videos here, you'd have noticed that I’ve been playing around with the Carry on films.
While I was editing these films, looking for clips, and watching cuts again and again, I really started to see what each actor brought to the series, appreciating of their comic skill, timing, and their unique contribution to the ensemble cast.
A particular stand out for me was Charles Hawtrey.
This video isn’t about Charlie’s life, we know he was a complicated, and somewhat tragic figure.
This video is about Charlie’s Carry On journey.

Thanks. A great reminder of Hawtrey's unique persona. I love his line as a pivate detective in Carry on Loving - "Subject left Cock Inn" !

Charles Hawtrey was a great actor, but obviously he struggled with his personal life, it can't have been easy living in those days for him, a shame as he was a very funny man.

no arguments there, he was certainly a troubled man.

Brilliant video. What on earth was going on with Hawtrey in that final shot, obviously you slowed it down, but it seemed especially creepy. Did you use AI for interpolation?

Thank you. Yep heavily slowed down, a hasty job using premiere's optical flow. I liked the slightly creepy look.

So many of the carry on cast are considered eccentric, but I wonder if damaged is not a better description. I dont mean that in a bad way of course, I mean in terms of the laws of the time, and studio culture.

      That's a really good point. I think you're right.

@@Doctor_Random Pushy mothers, violent fathers seems to be a trend. For Charles, as a child actor in Will Hay films, I wonder what demands producers made. The casting couch was a thing of course, was a thing still in the last decade, me too etc. To me, demanding top billing for what is now a pittance in todays money, might be more about wanting recognised for other sacrifices made.

Charlie was so camp he made Kenneth Williams look like John Wayne But the carry on movies were never as good after the producers foolishly fired him and replaced with inferior character actors...
