Hi. Thanks so much for your excellent video. I am a mum with children with special needs and I wanted to fix their Joy Con Controller by myself. I watched a few different videos but your video was the best, your instructions were very clear and easy to understand. I was able to fix the controller and now it’s as good as new. Thank you
Excellent, calm video! Ordered replacement parts for 5€ and did the repair following your tutorial. I now have a fully working Joycon once more, thank you!
Thanks you so much for your video. Calm and easy to understand. Given the reliability of the Joy Con's, this tutorial will be useful for people for many years to come.
Excellent video, in the end when I opened my joycon I noticed the ribbon cable wasn't connected at all. Reconnected it and now it's working perfectly. At least I have two spare boards if they do break in the future.
Thanks for this! I actually found doing the opposite to be easier... don't removing the charging cable, and do remove the battery tray completely. To each their own! Thanks again.
5:20 the black thing just pop off, how can i fix it? Can i like put it back? (I’ve already tried to stick kt back to the white part but it doesnt work.)😢
The clip is quite delicate and that is easy to do. I believe you can clip the flip-up bit back on (provided it hasn’t actually snapped) but you have to get the battery tray out of the way by unscrewing the other two screws. I can’t remember if any wires have to come out too. That will give you better access and you’ll be able to see better what’s going on - and if anything is actually broken.
I have an issue. At 5:20 in the video, that small ribbon cable holder came apart. I still have the small black piece but I can’t figure out how put back together.
I think the flip-up top, the black bit, should clip back onto the part attached to the circuit board. It might be worth removing the battery tray all together to get a good look.
@@paterpracticus I was able to repair the joycon with your tutorial! Minor thing, when I attach it to the switch, the switch doesn't detect it. I am able to connect wirelessly. I am not as good as you at DIYing but I thought I did a fine job at it
@@paterpracticusthat was the problem, wow you’re good. One of my screws is stripped so I’m going to wait for one of my mates to come take that one screw down so I can fix the process. You don’t happen to also know where to buy replacement screws? Thanks for all the help mate!
My SL and sync button was not working. Joy-con was always on and not going off. I thought I will have to change the flex cable like you did but just unplugging and plugging it back fixed my buttons. Thanks a lot for the video
is there any way of replace the battery trays? my joycon fell of and that black piece you show that holds the SL broke and i am searching how to fix it
Having trouble at 5:20 of the video. My black clip doesn’t seem to want to latch so the flex cable disconnects from the circuit every time I move my tweezers away, any suggestions?
Hi. This really is the hardest part of the operation. I suggest trying it out first without the ribbon cable and make sure the clip moves up and down properly. Then, when you try it again with the cable, ensure the lugs either side of the plug are properly over those either side of the socket. The plug only sits on top of the socket, so the clip holds it down onto the lugs, preventing it from pulling out. Hope that helps.
Great! Glad it worked. It was the second time I'd done it, so I was able to be a bit quicker than the first - and confident enough to film it at the same time.
Hello! I tried doing this on my switch because only the SR button had response issues. I just installed a replacement part and the issue persists. Only the SR button is affected. The joycon has not been dropped and has not suffered liquid damage either. What could the problem be?
Sorry to hear that didn't solve the problem. It is usually down to the fold in the ribbon cable making for a weak connection, but it could be a problem further down the line - perhaps in the socket on the circuit board. I suggest going in again and making sure there isn't any dirt or fluff in the bit where the cable plugs in.
You should be able to find them online. Try searching ‘Tri wing screwdriver’ or ‘Y0 screwdriver’. They are sometimes sold in sets specifically for this repair. Otherwise you may need to get them as part of a specialised screwdriver bit set.
i think i broke mine following this tutorial, the sl/sr and recharging ribbon cable holding things just dont work. my joycon is now trashed and im having a panic attack
I’m sorry to hear that. Stay calm. Then work back through the process, checking all cables have been plugged back in correctly. Can you let me know what isn’t now working?

@@paterpracticus i had two joycons to repair, following the tuto the first one took around 10 minutes (you didn't lie :) ), and the second one took less than 5 minutes. This is really one of my favourite youtube channels, your voice is so calming and you explain very well, you earned a subsciber :)
I just did this repair today as the ribbon on both my left and right joycon had torn where it folds under itself after I replaced the sticks. I found that there is a little recess under the battery holder where you can poke the ribbon cable into, so that it doesn't cause a firm fold. Its a bit fiddly to get it to go in there but give it a go.

Is the joy con charging? If not, check that the other cable (6:31) is plugged in properly. That might be also why it isn’t being detected.

I feel sure there must be, but not sure how. You could see if anyone is selling a faulty one for spares or repair on eBay and rob it of parts.
