Restoration of Nintendo Switch with No Power - Console Repair

  • In this video I will restore and repair a Nintedo Switch that won't turn on. The screen is also very scratched so I wil replace the digitizer too. The switch is already suprisingly old console and since it has already new version (OLED) available and swtich 2 is getting released soon, it's about time I make a video about the original switch.
I start by removing ton of screws. Nintendo is already using ton of different types of screws to bend the rules of right to repair. After removing the screws and gaining access to the mother board I test the charging IC with a multimeter and since that seemed to be fine I figured the problem is likely with the USB C port, because the console gave no signs of life when charging. The issue could be something worse but when I had removed the motherboard I could see the USB C port was damaged.
To replace the USB C port I bought a new port (link can be found bellow). I used a heat gun to remove the old port and aluminium tape to shield some of the parts near the port. I used first 380 °C for about a minute or two to heat everything up and then I turned the heat up to 480 °C until the part came loose. The part will fall off with a little tap. There's no need to use any force, it will only damage the board if you try to do so. After removing the part I checked the contacts were ok and soldered a new port in. After the port was heated up I checked the contacts looked soldered correctly. Some of teh pins are under the port so I can't see if those are soldered, but could check it with a USB C test board before you plug it in be 100% sure you won't cause any damage.
Next I replaced the digitizer since I was replacing the digitizer I didn't need to be careful with it, If you are going to put the same dugutizer back on, you wan't to be careful when beding the digitizer and working around the ribbon cable. Finally I cleaned the parts from dust and replaced the old thermal paste.

3:20 Bud that is not how you check if theres an issue with m92. you dont measure across the caps, you put your BLACK probe to ground on either the metal shield above the APU or on the case of the USB port, then touch the caps with the RED probe on each side to test for shorts, if only 1 side beeps then its not short

It's pretty rude to scrub the Ducktor's butt before you brush his teeth with the same brush! 😆
I am not too familliar witht he insides of a Switch - nice video. It makes me wonder how much dust in in my launch-day unit's fan!

Long time subscriber. Love each and every video. With that said, I have one question and one suggestion. Most fans have a cover held in place with 2-3-4 tiny screws. Removing the cover allows for a thorough cleaning of the interior and blades. Have you heard of ArctiClean 60ml Kit 1 & 2 Thermal Grease Paste Compound Remover and Purifier (on Amazon)? One drop of remover would have dissolved the thermal grease and two drops would have purified the surface. The kit is awesome. Once you try it your only regret will be not discovering it sooner. Thanks! 👍👍👍

My brother and I bought our Switch back in December 2017, and I can confirm that it is in a very bad shape. Sometimes, it won't turn on. The joy-cons won't connect to the console, and the Wi-Fi connection is awful.

Pretty rich to call this a proper "restoration" not only did you swap the boards, but you also re-used the old adhesive when swapping the digitiser for the screen. I imagine you struggled with the port swap, admittedly they're not easy however as long as you keep rotating your heat gun when heating from the bottom, you won't melt the plastic on the port. I am usually a huge fan of your videos, but people will notice stuff like this.

@@mups4016 if you look between 4:14 and 13:34, the original board has a different shade of green, and the port is a factory one after its allegedly been replaced.

Hmm for a Switch that is 7 years old, it really wasn't in that bad of condition. I was expecting the controller buttons and stick not to work very well due to 7yrs of use. Screws probably missing due to prior maintenance work on it, they just were not advanced enough to to figure out why the device didn't power up. I love how you make short work of repairing devices. Meticulous 💅😎

I don't even have a Nintendo Switch. I've had a Nintendo Wii since Christmas 2010. I've been too loyal to it to settle for any other console. But my top three most favorite Switch games to watch on RUclips are:
1st place: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
2nd place: Monster Hunter: Rise and Sunbreak
    3rd place: Luigi's Mansion 3
