he has 206 in Sydney against that mighty aussies. Has other 10 test hundreds (including one at Lords too ) to go with 4 hundreds in odis and usually till gavaskar asked him to open he used to play 8-11 so his avg went down as far as career avg in test and odis are concerned. And he avged 41 plus as opener which is as good as 55 in this era side he faced, Marshall, akram, Younis, akhtar, garner, Bishop etc in their prime. And those days 60 strike rate was good since it's slowish scoring one day matches. And including his 151 wickets in tests and 129 wickets in odis. You have a very fine cricketer. Also WC 85 winner (player of tournament) Wc 83 winner. And his career ended prematurely at 30 since of a knee injury surgery. Then won ranji trophy with mumbai in 1993 . Has hit six sixes also. In one over. Then Commentry gosh. one of the finest people. Yuvi six sixes, 2007 final, 2011 final they still call out in his voice. Then team director and coach also. 71 years we didn't win border gavaskar series in Australia, and we won under his only 2 tours to Australia there, both we won and leading in English 2-1 . Wc 19 semifinal, wtc final, cT 17 . We reached the Knockouts quite brilliantly. Just because of whole battingcollapse on the big day you can't blame him only . And what is wrong when he drinks??? Is only him who drinks in the whole cricketing community in world ???? Also he is 60 so sleep and all will come ,during matches why you have to blame him for that also. Ravi Shastri was amongst the finest. He played hard on and off the field. He never bothered to cultivate an image with the press. Hence there has always been a subtle encouragement to malign him. The true test of a player is what opinion his teamates and competitors have of him.
It was always positive be it an Imran Khan or a Shane Warne or Viv Richards.
Now that he is doing a great job with Team India with Virat Kohli people still crave for a "Kumble" because Kumble is the "all good who can do no wrong" front bench student of the class while Shastri is the back bencher.
Just to add, Kumble has been an IPL coach without world breaking success. Nothing to deride the great man (Kumble) but to put things in perspective.

I don't agree with some of the things Rahul Mankad said, like "larger than life character", Shastri was an extremely staid and risk free player. No-one though can doubt his sheer guts and courage. He had his moments, like the 200 vs Shane Warne & co, his 6 sixers in an over, his 1988 championship trophy and some others.
In focussing on his batting where he was a hardworking Mt Average at best, we lost a possibly world class attacking left arm spinner. It's easy now to poke fun of his opening in one days but those days we had no better. To conclude, Shastri punched well over his weight in batting and was a collosal under achiever in bowling.
One bit of trivia. Shastei's grandfather was an Ayurvedic physician in Mangalore and was my GG father's family doctor.

He become a far better test player than odi player, he was the worst in odi's as opener , come on 43 of 102 balls, ppl would pray that he gets out, but he was the best test opener in overseas conditions of his era and he was a wonderful bowler, tall and lovely action

As a test player he wasn't that bad. He was not that great but in 80s did everything batting in all positions, bowling as needed, being substitute etc. May be team saw him as team man and even after sunny retirement played for A while. He scored 11 test 100s of which 7 came overseas against some tough bowling of the time and at that time all openers from India struggled including siddhu (who did well from early 90s and was called as strokeless wonder in the beginning and he turned around in 87 cup). His odi batting declined from 1988, became way too slow cost crucial wc match in 1992 but on his day he won few matches one in Sharjah and then with bowling vs Australia and Benson and hedges cup. He gets more criticism probably because of his views and free spirit kind of attitude. Cheers

Correction other than gavaskar openers struggled. Srikanth did well for 2 or 3 matches and till 86 or 87 shastri opened because no options were available. I am not his fan but his contribution in test matches is not that poor

he has 206 in Sydney against that mighty aussies. Regardless what you and all haters tell about him. He will remain a LEGEND.

People have now forgotten that he was a very good bowler and a decent batsman and above all this, he still is one of the best commentators to emerge out of India.
