    Hay All, A few Updates
At 4:27 I state Blheli32 runs on 16 bit mcu, I misspoke and its 32bit as shown in the chart and stated later. Please accept my apology on the talko error.
    The BLHeli_32 Situation
Hi everyone after a load of questions I thought I would share some concise info as well as answer some of the questions I have received.

Today the situation is the developer behind BLHeli_32 has decided to cease trading with immediate affect and will no longer continue to provided licensing of new product based on BLHeli_32.
My understanding of the process for this was each esc was licensed by the manufacturer as it was flashed and then that esc remained licensed for its life. This license was not transferable or purchasable by end users and the manufacturer of the esc payed the license on a per unit basis.
As such as of now no manufacturers can license any further production of ESCs with BLHeli_32 firmware.
Technically as I understand it manufactures could actually flash new ESCs with BLHeli_32 however without the license the end user would have no access to BLHeli Suite configurator or the ability to change settings. You would be stuck with a stock ESC. There is a lot of other unknowns on this route and it would also be going against the conditions of the BLHeli_32 license regardless of them stopping trading.
Here and now the situation is this only affects new esc manufacturing that was going to use BLHeli_32.
    Current Users
For users of ESCs currently flashed with BLHeli_32 nothing has changed. Your esc will still work as it did before. You also still have the ability to download BLHeli Suit and even update the esc firmware (for now at least.)
Your ESC will continue to work as it did before and there is zero need to take any action on your current purchased BLHeli_32 based products.
Today there is also likely a decent stock of pre-licensed BLHeli_ 32 ESC in the retail supply chain around the world and it’s safe to purchase these as it’s the same as any esc you already own. This stock will obviously start to dwindle fast as there is no new production however there is no known risk today purchasing existing stock.
It’s also worth noting that ESCs running BLHeli_S are not affected by this as that is open source and no license is required.
    The Future
Moving forward It’s very likely you will start to see manufactures move 8 Bit ESC production over to Bluejay from BLHeli_S simply as it’s easier to market them as an alternative to BLheli_32 with RPM filtering ect.
32Bit ESCs will continue and AM32 is the natural path forward with a number of manufacture such as Skystars already being well onboard with a number of AM32 products in the market place already. For others not already in the AM32 stable it may take a little time for things to settle as they look at their options and new products to filter through as manufactures, I suspect personally there will be a scramble to get onboard with the AM32 project but again this is down to each manufacturer to decide what they do next. The options are fairly limited but let’s see.
Today no one needs to rush out and do anything, your current gear will work fine. There is zero need to try and flash your esc with AM32 and in-fact I would strongly advice against it as it’s a complicated process with some risks.
BLheli_32 was very much the go to for manufactures and users for a number of reasons however that does not mean it was the best option. This will be a blip in the road however it will be better for FPV in the long run as it gives a big push for ESCs back into the open source world.
    On a final note.
There is a lot of comments on why this has happened and as I stated in my video I would have preferred to have seen BLHeli_32 open sourced rather than closed down however it should be remembered that this is the work of a company, it’s closed source and their IP, their time and effort has gone into this and just saying to open source is is a massive over simplification of the situation.
We do not know the full background to this change of direction and the developer involved may have been left with no choice but do what has been done. It’s complex on many levels and while we all have opinions we should remember that the world has changed a lot in the last few years and the drone industry is feeling the heat from many directions and this one of the biggest signs of that yet.
Sadly I also think it’s not going to be the last.
    Mad

I think AM32 is a good choice for new development of ESCs, in the future. BTW, I notice some semicondutor company like Geehy Semiconductor can offer the total solution for ESC, based on AM32 platform. Highlight cost-effective solution, comes with the MCU and pre-driver together. I'm going to try and test their solution.👍

Very strange situation indeed. Normally IP assets (including license agreements) usually go to the creditors, shareholders, or other stakeholders when a business shuts down. These assets could also be sold, licensed, or abandoned (i.e., become part of the public domain). If the business did shut down, without being sold, then would be effectively abandoned, as a non-existent business would not be able to enforce. I'm not legal expert, just my understanding. Lawyers would need to review the license agreement(s) to understand the implementations. It may not necessary be what BL_Heli_32 owner(s) have implied in their communications. Just a weird situation.
Regardless, the sudden notification without consideration to the impact to hobby community is justification to seek alternative open-source software to have a dependency on.

Open sourcing it properly would take some time. They may choose to do that. Though if they are scared to sell it, they may also be scared to provide it open source. Despite the exemptions for open source in the export laws. They probably legally could, but they may be afraid to take that risk. We shall see. We don't actually know yet - in a week or two or three they may have an open source presence set up.

Now the ESC was made for vehicle use only, but the original version was for aircraft. This is the main reason I only stick to R/C surface use only. BLHeli should've implemented a kill switch to their firmware knowing too well drones are being used in such manner.

    Remember this hashtag #ruiningthehobby ?
I'm disgusted. One has to imagine that BLHeli AS is going to stay in the business but with military contracts rather than hobyists.
The decent thing to do would be to release the code under an open license so as not to leave all of their customers high and dry, but.
BLHeli AS needs - as a minimum - to release unlocked versions of their firmware binaries so people who have supported them can continue to use the products they have paid for.
Current stock may be fine - as long as it doesn't have a buggy version. The firmeware upgrader goes off to some licence server.
TBH I have the same fears about Flydurino/KISS, Fettec/Alpha and KISSFCFC/KISS Ultra.
I would like to see all propietary firmware/hardware manufacturers to commit to some kind of succession plan - such as a commitment to open source code/designs in the event the companies can not for whaetver reason continue with their products.
I have payed a considerable premium to support from the KIss family and BLHeli32.
I feel like those organisations should support their users.

Unfortunately they can't open source it right now because of export concerns. All regulatory frameworks concerning export of arms consider publishing source code a form of export. This is why Ardupilot devs are adamant about not supporting military uses.
IMHO BLHeli_32 devs are trying to be more Catholic than the Pope, but given harsh punishments for export violations it isn't that surprising.

My first experience with AM32 was unfortunately a pretty bad experience. Skystars KM55A stack. I believe I received a defective unit but it took me hours to eliminate every other possibility and a month after buying it to go into one of my builds I still havent been able to fly even after dropping it off at the shop I bought it from. Luckily I’ve got my BLs and older 32 Builds still kicking! I’m willing to give them another go but I’m going to wait till it’s a bit more mainstream

So does this mean all BLHeli firmwares are dead, including BLHeli_S?
It's an odd decision to make when it won't stop the use of BLHeli (the firmware is already out there) and the alternate is something open source that the EU have even less control over. It's like saying 'you have to stop making car tyres' because RU happened to use them instead of making their own. Now that means they can/will just use another brand or make their own relatively easily. So all that is achieved is that you siphon less money away from RU and you lose your chance to have firmware level access to every RU drone in the air. Genuis 🙄
