For most people there is no need to worry, if their ESC currently works fine then it will keep working fine until they break it and then they can replace it. Buying BLHeli32 ESCs just now isn’t a bad idea either, they will still work fine but you will just have to use the firmware that is on it. BLHeli32 has been well polished and usable for a long time and most people don’t update their firmware anyway unless they have an actual reason to.
The bug you described that causes one or more of the ESCs to not arm after a crash, affects freestyle pilots as well. In fact, I would argue it's significantly more problematic when you crash on a level or rooftop of a bando that is not accessible and you are unable to turtle mode. That's the moment that pilot will not want to use 32.9 ever again.
Yup. I've had to hop a few 6' fences to retrieve a quad for that reason. I thought the esc was slowly dying from all the crashes. Didn't even register that it could be firmware related
11:06 I have to disagree with Ian's ending conclusion to BLHeli32. I know Mad's Tech is staying there is no good reason to flash AM32 to an existing BLHeli32 ESC. But frankly, there is a good reason to flash to AM32... The fact is, and he said it in the video. IF on 32.9 racers were reporting about the ESC refusing to re-arn after a crash. If on 32.95 or 32.10, leave it on BLHeli32. IF on 32.9, then absolutely flash it to AM32 and have the confidence that you will be able to re-arm the quad after a crash and bring it back home or at least get it out of a tree etc.
I recieved a couple of new Foxeer F405 V2 Reaper 55A stacks a few weeks ago, checked both ESCs yesterday and revealed that they run latest 32.10 BL32 firmware. This is awesome.
Hey, thanks for the information. I hope you're right and this isn't a joke. I've just ordered this stack from the Foxeer shop. Because I need 32.10, because 32.9 apparently causes problems with 3D mode. And I probably only have BL32 ESCs left in the box with 32.9 that I wanted to install this summer. I would have done that earlier, but it says 32.9 in product page. But the product description can't have been updated, because ESC FW version is not that important anyway...
@@Sugalime3D_FPV hopefully someone will come up with a way to flash the ESCs without using the configurator, it shouldn’t be difficult as they are common microcontrollers anyway then all you would need is the binary file to load onto it. If it is already possible to flash them with non BLHeli32 firmware like the alternative he mentioned then it will absolutely be possible to flash other BLHeli32 versions if someone can find or dump the binary.
@@Sugalime3D_FPV WARNING!! I just ordered this stack straight from Foxeer and the ESC came with a weird old prototype version of BLHELI32. It shows 31.8.4 Prototype in the configurator.... and... I can't change any settings. I emailed them to see what's up with that, but it's not looking like this will be a good option.
I believe that they should not sell unsupported devices of any kind or at least sell them at a massive discount I just bought a foxeer 65a Esc before all of this and haven’t even gotten around to installing it very disappointing but thank you always for your great and up to date information
I have several BLHeli32 ESCs. They work, but I did have what I believe was an electrical storm come through here because I had flight controllers forget which wat to spin half of the motors, forget several other BF settings, and I had an ELRS receiver stop connecting to my radio until I reflashed the firlware on the receiver. I also had my radio lock up & stop working until I reinstalled EDGE TX. I haven't tried all of my ESCs since then.
Thanks for all the info, Ian! 😊 I hope more people jumps to the AM32 boat, to work with them and make it easier. Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
just tested my newly built drone with blheli 32, right after arming, the motors spun with full throttle, I was lucky my hands weren't close to the drone! [update] just checked the blheli version, it's "proto 31.9.1" please if you have any info regarding this version, let me know please 🙏
I decided to always wear special gloves when connecting the battery to 3.5-6 inch copters. Fingers are damn important ! Because of your last video, this video and because I myself once had an unexpected spin up of the motors (without propellers) with BLHeli_S, see my video " 3DmodeFPV | Don't make this mistake ". More scenarios of a possible unpredicted spin up...: A crash when the quad got a bit wet, that can happen. Also, if you still make the mistake of connecting the battery with arming, despite double arming security. Even more dangerous for me because I use spring centralized throttle gimbal because of 3D mode. And in 3D mode the gimbal has to be in the center for the arming. That means only two buttons keep me away from an accident...
I want to try ESCape32, that is why I ordered a AM32 ESC few days ago (they are cheaper than BL32). The " ESCape32 vs BlHeli_32 - Motor Startup Compariso " video that you can find on the internet made me curious as a 3D mode pilot. Fast and linear spin up and fast direction change is important in 3D mode FPV. As you can see in the comments in the video, ESCape32 was developed specifically for this. Because the developer didn't had a firmwares for his RC excavator for fast spin ups of the motor. In the FPV University video, Pawel says that some pilots have told him that they like ESCape32 better than AM32. So I'd love to see that others try it out, so we can discuss it.
Everyone talks about stops, but a stop can be interpreted in two ways: 1) Temporary stop or 2) Permanent stop. As far as I can see, BL32 can come back if the war ends... The question is, will AM32 and ESCap32 have enough time to get to the same level by then ? Because it's clear that AM32 and ESCape32 is free compared to BL32. But maybe BLHeli company has realized that AM32 will now catch up and every manufacturer will switch, so a comeback will be difficult and probably impossible. So you can really say that BL32 has been stopped permanently.
It should be possible for someone to make an offline flashing tool anyway, all you need is the binary file and access to some programming interface which is the only bit that may make it difficult. If people can already use an ST link to flash AM32 on BLHeli32 ESCs then it should be easy to do so using the STM32 programmer, that should also mean it is easy to flash the latest BLHeli32 version if people can get ahold of a binary, possibly from using the programmer to dump the binary, unless BLHeli did anything to prevent this. I also wouldn’t be surprised if manufacturers have tools to flash the ESCs just from a binary and they likely have that binary for lots of versions of their ESC, so if that could somehow find its way onto a public platform then that would be very beneficial.
It’s happed to me 32.10 has a bug 32.09 has never had a problem but if you listen to the start up tone you will hear something is wrong one of the esc tone will sound 10 to 15 sec off/ late unplug the battery or motor will slow ramp up. In the goggles it will say RPM filtering and it will not arm. hope this helps. Happens on RDQ 32 bit esc
Has anyone checked the 32.95 hex test files before? Hypothetically, I know how to bypass license verification, but it's time-consuming and I would like to know if it makes sense

In this moment I literally froze for 3 seconds and was very grateful I had pre-arm set and I walked away with a face that day. Gonna make sure it’s on every build from now on.

Is the locked bootloader something that BLHeli could have dealt with before they shut down? Could they have unlocked it with a firmware update? If so, it would have been nice of them if they had done so before closing the doors and basically locking all esc's to whatever version they were last flashed with. Especially if they have no further business interest in it at all.
Potentially however this is a complex situation and I specifically stated clear of the why in this video however we beleive there have been some strong legal sanctioned placed against them as as such they were unable to do anything.
The biggest mess is that they didn't actually give us a chance to do an update. Then I would have changed my priorities to do the updates...
