Love your random stations G Funny you picked Gospel Oak, I know it very well as my Aunt lived just round the corner and in early 1960s this line had class 47s running on it withh separate compartment carriage. Also gas lamps still in booking hall. 😂
Very enjoyable documentary, G. Informative, interesting and very engaging. Please keep making these random station videos (and other videos too). Greetings from Australia.
There’s a lot of good history around Gospel Oak station. It’s the start of the GOBLIN, which is an abbreviation of Gospel Oak to Barking LINe. It’s one of the last lines in London to have been electrified, and up to recently, it was one of the least used lines in London… not today though!
Brilliant video G, nice to see the random station generator has brought you to Gospel Oak, the start of the GOBLIN line (its a shame theres no goblins there lol). That Hampstead Heath park does look beautiful but busy thanks to that day being hot and it was I was out that day doing stuff with my brother. I'll always be looking forward to the next random station videos. :)
Absolutely enjoying these random station vlogs, and Hampstead Heath is certainly one of the nicer parts of London. If you visit that part of London again, I think you would enjoy a walk along the Regents Canal
Awesome vlog G, I was expecting another day of Exploring Yorkshire by Train, but still an awesome video. Plus, never expected you're name to come up randomly.
I imagine random stations will disproportionately land you on greater London somewhere. If you want more variety, you might just want to exclude anything in a London fare zone.
If you wanted to avoid the Underground, you could have taken the Watford DC line to Willesden Junction, either from Euston, or change further north from a London Northwestern Service, then the North London Line.
One of my first jobs years ago was in Upper Holloway and I had to change at Gospel Oak. In those days the trains were diesel trains, was an unreliable service with no electronic boards saying when the train was due.
Great video - yes, please, more Random Stations! Congratulations on braving the Underground again, and finding Gospel Oak, which has its mention in literature: in John Buchan's 'The Three Hostages' spy thriller, and also - with Hampstead Heath - in R Austin Freeman's Dr Thondyke detective mystery 'The Silent Witness'.
Fantastic again G this is Always gonna be a good adventure with a random choice 👌I know Gospel oak very well on my trips along the North London line to go trainspotting at Willesden and old oak Common here's to your next adventure 👍😊
I was hoping that the random station generator was going to send you to Glasgow Central there where I live but hopefully you’ll get to visit another time 🤞 . Thanks for always cheering me up on a choooosday! Look forward to next week’s vlog
I first visited Gospel Oak around 1999! I as on a very grubby Class 313 from west Hampstead, when I spotted an elderly Class 110 DMU in the Gospel Oak bay platform, so I caught that to Barking. The Goblin was only hourly back then!
HI G Mancunian in excile here . Live in Northwood and my daily commute is Finchley Road , Finchley Road and Frognal, Gospel Oak and South Tottenham . Hampstead Heath is a great walk and views of the city 😊
If only you got the Overground from Euston to Willesden Junction, then change there for the North London Line to Gospel Oak. Much faster (and cooler) than the Victoria line to Highbury & Islington.
G - save the date for the launch of the National Rail map on Friday November 10th at Hexham Racecourse. Perhaps you might like to make a video and review the new map which you will find useful on your travels. There’s even lunch and some horse racing to enjoy. Interested?
Love the idea and the series, a little chaos can be fun. Lol, G on coach G to station G... If you did that here in Rio de Janeiro (same letter), you'd have two stations on the metro/underground, both are quite touristy, so no problems. On the trains (local rail) you'd have two others, that aren't even in Rio city itself (but in what you could call "Greater Rio"), I haven't been to either, but one up in the foothills of some mountains would be lovely to visit for a day or two. The problem there is there are very few trains a day, so timing is a pain. On the light railway (VLT) there's one stop, but nothing really touristy around, tbh. It's close to the "English cemetery", which my old Lonely Planet guidebook said might be interesting for a visit; but there's much closer stations (one in front I think!). Still a lot to explore here, I should get back to having a wander 😅
If you spend time at Gospel Oak you will notice how eastbound trains often arrive about 10-15 seconds after the departure of the "Goblin Line", condemning the commuter who wants to switch to an extra 15 minutes of waiting for very little good reason (which is annoying when a total London area commute can approach 2 hours duration each way). On a brighter note, Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill Fields are excellent places to spend time.
Love it G. What a brilliant way to visit areas you would not normally go to, a random generated place. Not a bad place to go to and so plesed you discover Hampstead Heath. Does seem strange seeing you out and about down here in the south. Thoroughly entertaining as usual, great vlog G, keep up the great work, Ray xx
Great vlog G, now this time I had heard of Gospel Oak as I actually did ride part of the Gospel Oak to barking line last month. It was exceptionally hot that day I went out filming too and I was struggling with lack of shade at some stations! I enjoyed watching as always.
Mm one can no longer now actually get a thru ticket anyway to here, but it would, for moi, have been funny if yr generator had brought up say Galway or Gent..!!
You'd never heard of the Gospel Oak to Barking LINe, aka the Goblin? (albeit now it goes to Barking Riverside) Loving this series so far, and it gets you to new places which is always nice.
This is fantastic. I think suburban railway stations are often underrated, people just see them as something functional but there's often a lot to see. Especially at junction stops like this one.
i really enjoyed watching this ive never used Gospel Oak but ive stopped there maby once & ive ridden loads of the London overground 285s & im still looking out for the pride livery one & ive now been on a few refurbished Pendolinos since ive been up North & im loving them & they are Ace anyway awesome vlog keep up the awesome work & ill look forward to hopefully seeing more stations down south
Yay Random ! Hampstead Heath is lovely, lived in that neck of the woods for a couple of years many years ago. Maybe you could change your randomness to include a station density.
@@GLovesTrains Stations per area (I just invented it.) I would go into more detail, but my brain is a bit old and rusty. Your videos are wonderful and a breath of fresh air.
A vlog G. The random generator is a great idea, looking forward to seeing where you go next. The last time I was a Gospel Oak (about a year ago), there was a nice cafe on the platform.
Being from the north id never heard of this either until a few months ago, its not too far from my partners house and useful for changing on trains to stratford, cool station and cool content, gonna drop a sub
Just found your channel, love your vlogs... Can you clear something up for me... If you have a Poo in Crewe, do you have to have a Wee in Leigh-on-Sea... Keep up the good work anywayz
Definitely some potential here G for a spinoff series. You could do three series here by visiting stations beginning with letters from three particular words and phrases which we are all used to from your videos in GLovesTrains, Knickers and Squishy Boobies
The Goblin Line (Gospel Oak-Barking Line) should have be renamed as Gobrlin (Gospel Oak-Barking Riverside Line). Since the line has been extended to Barking Riverside since it opened in 2022 along with the new station as well at Barking Riverside. And it’s nice to see you doing London. 😁
Never been on an underground - always intend to go on the Glasgow one at some point in the future. You couldn't have asked for a better day for that day out - it was glorious! Where next?
I’ve had an idea for visiting a random station. If you’ve ever heard of the word game Scrabble why not simply pull out three letters and see if it corresponds to a station.
Many years ago I used to sometimes ride the North London Line from Broad Street to Richmond and back on a Sunday afternoon. There was a proper signal box at Gospel Oak, Gospel Opal No. 2 I think it was. One night there was a fire in that box in which the signalman on duty at the time sadly died. I don’t know why he wasn’t able to get out in time. For some time the points were normally fixed tor the main route, and manually moved for the rather infrequent freight trains running through towards Barking. A new signal box was later provided in a sort of metal box, but I think the line has since been re-signalled. I can’t remember exactly when this was, probably some time in the ‘80s.
Ive heard of gospel oak but i have heard of crewe and London euston, I can't remember if I ever told you about my story on the Victoria line when they pulled a passenger emergency alarm?
Welcome back down south! I’ve never stopped at Gospel Oak but I’ve been through it years ago before they had a decent service! Great video and I hope your trip home was good too :)

You should've changed at Milton Keynes Central, gone to Harrow & Wealdstone and then changed at Willesden Junction.
@ChilternTransportProductionsAh but most of the Manchester services don't stop at Watford Junction!
It's great to see someone challenging the stereotype of a trainspotter !

I didn't know our Calder Valley units got down to London! I always thought it was 105 Craven's units or ex-Blackpool 104's!
Love Gospel Oak as a filming location, well, I did when it was the Class 172s over on the Goblin Line
Gospel Oak is a great place, especially if you travel a few minutes further to Camden.
And Gospel Oak is (roughly) where Michael Palin lives.... pity you didn't see him!
