Great and informative video, Ashra! As a late self-diagnosed autistic, I never had to deal with ABA. However, while watching this video, I remember certain things when growing up that are similar to ABA. Mainly things that made me good at masking. Once I self-diagnosed about 4 years ago, I began to undo some of the masks I had. For example, being invited to social gatherings, I would say yes, because that's what I was taught, now I make the choice depending on if I will be comfortable at said gathering. And related having to stay for hours at a social gathering because that's the norm, now I will leave if I feel tired of socializing and not feel bad about it.

The irony is how often some adults tell their kids to, "Just be yourself" yet they seem unwilling, unable or unaware of the ways to accommodate their child's complete identity.

Careful with the lemons! I used to eat 1-2 whole lemons every day and ended up with a horrific ulcer. Maybe chase it with a therapeutic dose of Omeprazole to save your stomach. (I'm only allowed sour green apples now for my fix)

Head banging or similar harmful stims as far as i know are stemming from being unable to communicate thoughts or have needs met. These stims are based in frustration and in combination with not feeling the caused pain it is harmful way of communication

Besides iatrogenic harm, in ABA, the person being treated is not the client, rather the parents/educators are, and methods are employed (which we generally reserve for prisoners and lab animals) that violate the worth and dignity of the individual. This constitutes a moral harm. It is true that a minor has limited autonomy, but this is for the sake of the minor's well-being, not the convenience or embarrassment of their guardians and caretakers. One can use behaviorism therapeutically, but ABA is freighted with deeply flawed ethics and needs to be abandoned as a relic of a less enlightened age.
