    Scleral lenses can serve many purposes. Most people wear scleral lenses if they have a corneal irregularities, like keratoconus. The benefit of scleral lenses is that it provides a constant fluid reservoir for your eye, like keeping your eye in a bath of solution. This making scleral lenses one of the ideal contacts to help fix and treat dry eyes.

    I’ve been wearing RGPs for 30 years. I’ve been experiencing a lot of discomfort, as well as blinking the lenses out of my eye. I have a lot of correction and astigmatism, and have lost lenses at very inopportune, sometimes hazardous, times. I am not a candidate for laser correction.
    I’ve been fitted and eagerly await my new scleral lenses arrival by the new year. They (contact lens staff) seem to think I may have been a bit nuts paying out of pocket as I don’t have an eye disease (meaning insurance won’t cover), but I’m hopeful this lens will enable me to comfortably wear lenses for years to come.

    I wear mini-sclerals. They are not as huge as some of the others. I have Cogan’s Microcystic Dystrophy aka Map Dot Fingerprint Dystrophy in both eyes. I also get frequent recurring corneal erosions. I am still new to mini-sclerals and we are still working on the fit. I find they are fairly easy to handle and my symptoms are better controlled. My lenses are Hydra-PEG coated which make them super comfortable.

    Hey doc eyeguy. I am from germany. Thank you for your amazing Videos. Do you thing it can work by Okular rosacea?

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  3 года назад +1

      Guten Tag! Danke! Ocular Rosacea affects and causes inflammation of the eyelids and causes problems with the meibomian glands. Sclerals can help with the dry eye symptoms, especially if your eyes are dry enough to cause keratitis or inflammation on the cornea. But, you would still be dealing with the eyelid problem... and depending on the person, the scleral lenses might irritate the eyelids further. So that's a tricky one. If you have corneal issues from the dryness, then I would give it a shot.

    I have over a dozen pairs of scleral lenses that I've tried. They're insanely expensive to buy and even more to fit them. I've spent thousands of dollars to try and get a pair that work, but unfortunately I had to give up because they just wouldn't fit right. It really sucks because I can see so well with them, but even though all the measurements say they're a perfect fit, they still give me a bad headache after a couple hours. So now I switch between glasses I can't see well with and RGPs with frequent eye drops.

I also have bumps on my eye from Lasik surgery. Then at the end of the day when I take them off it feels like I’m literally ripping the cornea out of my eye. the only treatment I’ve tried is with restasis. That seem to work but my current Eye doctor doesn’t like it. I didn’t know about omega threes I’m going to look into taking some. Also I’ll have to start carrying my solutions around that way I can refresh the solution halfway through the day.

    And how much oxygen do they allow to pass thru?
    Thanks ...

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  2 года назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for the comment, and great question. Yes, scleral lens material does let oxygen through (dK value). Most materials range between 100-150 dK, which is actually pretty good, and along the lines of good soft contact lenses. But other things play a role in oxygen getting to the cornea with scleral lenses, like contact lens thickness, and tear exchange within the fluid of the lens. But all in all, scleral lenses have come a long way improving the oxygen that gets to the cornea.

      @@DrEyeGuy Thank you very much for the reply and info. What's your take on sclerals for post lasik patients?
      I've had lasik (huge regret) and have regressed to -2.00 , have severe dry eye and higher order abberations. Pointless surgery for me, and left me with complications. I was not counseled on the fact that this amount of regression could occur nor of the fact that complications could be permanent. I was told 99% chance glasses never come back (I now know this is not accurate). I was not counseled properly by my provider and based my decision to proceed with lasik off of untrue information.
      In any case I stick to glasses now, but vision just isn't so great as it was prior to surgery with contacts/glasses. I read sclerals give great visual clarity and are used therapeutically for certain eye conditions. I was hoping to try some to wear here and there if I did not want to wear glasses or just wanted better vision (esp at night and low lighting), as well as helping with dry eye.
      But i'm just concerned because I don't want to have any more issues with my eye and thought that putting a lens (of any type) would reduce both oxygen and natural tears to the cornea.
      Any thoughts would be highly appreciated. Thanks...

      Hard to say.... the redness could be from a fit issue, maybe it's too tight. Tear drops can help, you will want to use drops that are approved for contact lens wear, like Refresh Relieva for contacts. Usually it's better anyway to take the lens out, use drops and get fresh saline solution.

    Yesterday I got fitted for sclerals for severe stigmatism and severe dry eye, to the point I can’t drive at night, cause of the lights glaring and my eyes getting blurry as they get fatigued. After having them in for about 30 minutes my eyelids started feeling so dry they started stinging and making me nauseous. My eye doctor says it should go away after I get used to them, but I’m so afraid of spending $1100 and this continuing. I did have to put them in 3 times, because the tech wasn’t catching that there were bubbles, so I’m hoping it was just eye fatigue, but my eyes felt so much better on the way home after they were out. Is this normal? Can you tell me if I’m making a bad choice or not by getting them? Also they barely went past the iris of my eye, I kept thinking they looked too small, but eye doctor said they were perfect, do you think they should be bigger?

    I started wearing sclerals about a year ago.I was one of the "dead enders" where nothing else worked for my mgd caused dry eye. A few weeks ago when removing them at the end of the day I found it more difficult than usual and must have abraided the corneas resulting in infections in both eyes. I have recovered but am reluctant to use the sclerals again fearing a repeat of the injuries. Is this possibly a fit issue? The lenses helped a great deal. with the dry eye symptoms.

    Hello after maybe 6-8 hours with them on and if I’m at a gathering my family members will ask if I’m going blind it’s cause they see like a blue tint or cloudiness ? Also when I take them out my eyes are bloodshot of course I don’t wear them as often as I should due to laziness so I just wear my glasses ‘ but if they are going to get all cloudy like that for so much $$$ that I paid for them what should I do to avoid that issue of them getting cloudy ?

      It sounds like you might be dealing with something called "mid-day fog". There are some tricks and tips to help with that. A common one is to put a few drops of Celluvisk in your scleral lens when you fill it up with your saline solution. Different saline solutions can also make a difference. I'd recommend joining the 'My Big Fat Scleral Lens' facebook group. There is a lot of support there, as well as tips to help you out.

I had dry eye problems even back then and eventually offfered to try the new soft lens but couldn’t remove them because my eyes were so dry. I’ve only recently heard of scleral lenses.

    I am on day 2 of scleral lenses for my keratoconus. My eyes are drying out really bad pretty quickly after like a hour or 2. It looks foggy or something and gets really uncomfortable. I need to find drops before I can wear these all day...

    I have scleral lens however I constantly get mid day fog and there has been so many times when I get mid day fog 4-5 times a day. Sometimes it starts happens 30 min- 1 hr after insertion. Being a student, it’s really difficult to maintain so I’m not using them as much as I want. :(
