Have you ever worn scleral lenses?
Have you been told that sclerals are a good fit for you, but you're nervous about trying them?
Had a lasik surgery 17 years ago, vision got worse in the last few years, tried so many soft contacts that were very comfortable prior to surgery but now NOT 😭 Was told Scleral lenses might be a better option yet my regular eye doctor says if I feel that soft contacts are uncomfortable, then scleral lenses will be even worse. Don’t know who to believe. I have astigmatism in one eye only, feel discomfort in both eyes. I would appreciate any input from you.
Sclerals are often fit as a dry eye treatment or post-LASIK so I think it should be a viable option for you.

@@liandiaz9127 it will depend on where you have them fit and your insurance coverage. There are plans that cover medically necessary contacts in full. Out of pocket I’d guesstimate the fit at lenses will be $2-3k? Again super variable. I’ve heard of it being more and less than that.
Hello, I’m having starburst vision at night due to LASIK done in 2018, and was potentially looking into getting these lenses but here in uk it’s hard to find optician who does this. Do you have recommend? Thanks.

I have been suffering from vision problems for the last 6 years and the glasses have not helped me. I have lost my job and I can't work because I can't study. My doctor told me he would put on a sclera contact lens. My life has really changed and I am very happy now.

I just got scleral lenses and I love them! I was diagnosed with Keratoconus. I've had crosslinking done in both eyes. My left eye is significantly worse. Before the scleral lenses, I was seeing 20/200 at BEST! Now, I see 20/20. I am amazed at how well my vision has improved. However, it is not perfect. I do have some double vision in my left eye that can't be corrected (it's funny, as my sight got clearer, so did the double vision lol). I am hopeful I will be able to fix it with intacs sometime in the near future. As of now, I will enjoy the drastic improvement. These lenses are awesome!
I do have one question about them. What do you recommend for dry eyes with scleral lenses?
I can feel my eyes get dry after a few hours and I would like to get at least 12 hrs of wear without discomfort.

Hi Dr. D, how do i know through my vision if my astigmatism is regular and irregular?
I started wearing sclerals a few months ago. They are so much more comfortable than corneal rgp lenses. My only complaint is they fog up on me a lot . It was hard to find a doctor who knew a lot about them, I was lucky enough to be referred to a specialist that accepted my vision insurance. They were covered 100% as medically necessary. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I’m amazed at how well they work and how comfortable they can be.

My Dr. said that if they fog up, there might be too much space between your eye and the scleral lenses. This should be corrected by new lenses with a different shape. I'm not a professional, just passing on the information!

I have kerataconus .do we all need transplants ? I use scleral right now and have scarring .when would I need a transplant .I’m at 20/40 corrected
I have grain Corneal dystrophies ... a very rare condition and I’m going blind. Like it make you feel like you’re looking through fog and in the sun it’s almost impossible to recognize a persons face that’s directly in front of you. Would these lens help me in anyway possible? I seriously don’t want to get surgery. Please help.

Hey Dr. D. Thanks for the video. I’m a post-RK patient with 16 incisions on each eye. I have significant vision fluctuations where my vision is good to poor as the day progresses. To combat this side effect and act as a corneal brace, I went into RGP lenses back in the 90s, but switched to soft lenses in the 2000s with great success. About two years ago I started to suffer from vision fluctuations associated with dry eyes. My question related to scleral lenses is that since they are vaulted, would that likely mean my corneas would fluctuate from good to bad as if I was not wearing lenses in those lenses since they are not bracing the cornea?
You just brought back a memory. I once had a patient whose RK caused their prescription to fluctuate wildly. At the time I prescribed different glasses for every few hours. Now I’d do a scleral for sure. With adequate vault, the corneal fluctuations would not be an issue as the scleral allows for the corneal changes. I do think you’d have a more consistent visual outcome regardless of how much your cornea fluctuates. Great question!
I love my scleral lenses. One of the best decisions I ever made was to get scleral lenses.
I had transprk before 6 month and my optical zone is less than my pupil dialating at night i have 20/20 vision in day but night i see halos and glare i did topography there is no dcentralazation and not much aberration but my pupil is dialating more so is scaler lenses will correct this please reply i am really waiting for your reply
I tried the hard lenses to correct astigmatism. They were just too uncomfortable.
Apologies in advance for the long comment, I really don’t know where else to ask. Within the last 8 months, I’ve had a feeling of pressure/heaviness/aching on my upper eyelids after working for 1/1.5 hours on my computer, which I do a lot at the moment for university online studying and it's becoming unbearable, normally leading to a tension-like headache every time and being extremely uncomfortable in general. I originally thought it was Dry eye and have had 4 IPL sessions in order to try and fix this. Even after having good results in terms of conjunctival staining reduction and oils flowing better/dissipating over the eye better, this feeling persists. I am -5.75R and -6.00L. I’m quite sure at this point that it’s not my dry eyes and I feel a bit lost. I was wondering if you knew/heard of anything like this and could Scleral lenses help? Maybe it’s due to myopia? Someone I know online has the same problem and had an ophthalmologist say “because I’m highly myopic, my eyeball is longer and puts pressure on my orbital area, explaining why I keep feeling tightness in the region of my upper eyelid”. Could a Scleral lens fix this? Many thanks in advance.
I am not sure the cause of this for you. Is there a dry eye specialist in your area? I would recommend getting evaluated.

Hey dr pls help i have opacity in the center and scars due to cxl ..its burning when i use phone or watching tv and i feel like something inside my eye ...my dr told me u have to do cornea transplant .. i have tried scleral lens its amazing gave 20/20 .. but im afraid of This burn and dryness that ive told you before

Got diagnosed with Keratoconus at 16. Had the cross linking procedure at 22 and moved from soft contact lenses to scleral this year.
How's your vision in the sclerals?
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD Well its my first time seeing 20/20 since 16, almost 24 now. I feel less irritation, less loss of focus from environmental effects *wind etc* and clearer than i did with kerasoft lenses. I also feel a little more at peace knowing my cornea is a bit more healthier because it isn't in constant contact. I used to have a hell of a time, keeping my vision clear because the soft lenses would come off center, especially in the wind and cold. Its a complete change.

@@XxTheMedicxX99 Hi jimmy, a reply can be very helpful from you. I'm a kerataconic person and what to shift from rgp to scleral lens and also going to buy them this month. So my question is do we need to remove sclerals for every 4 or 6 hrs? or can i use it all day long for 10-12 hrs?? and if so Will it cause any problem.
@@shashanksunny6292 I like having a pair of glasses as back up, I cant see well with em but its enough, they are a nice break. Ill usually go 10+ hours at a time. Good eye drops and if you feel discomfort it can't hurt to take em out and clean.
I have a question, can scleral contact lenses be a good choice for someone with higher order aberrations (HOA)? My optometrist is unable to correct my left eye with glasses. I can see 20/20 with pinhole but everything is a very blurry 20/40 without pinhole in that eye even with lenses correcting for myopia and astigmatism. I have had my eyes checked out by an EYE MD and everything seems normal and healthy... but that eye sees very blurry. I have never had corneal wave mapping done but my doctors and I suspect I probably have a HOA.
If the HOA are corneal sclerals would vault over the irregularities and potentially give better vision. However sometimes aberrations are elsewhere in the optical system - lens, for example. A scleral won’t be able to fix that type of aberration. Does your topography show any corneal irregularity when they map your astigmatism?
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD I haven't gotten it mapped to confirm that it is a HOA and I am not sure where you get it mapped. Not all eye MDs do the mapping. My eye MD doesn't. I do have a question for you though do HOAs sometimes disappear on their own or do they tend to get worse over time?
Hello, I have been wearing scleral lenses for the past 4 years, recently I got my new lenses and I can feel the lens in my eye and it feels very uncomfortable around the edges of my eye. I haven’t worn my right lens for over 3 months after a previous injury. I got my new right lense today yet it feels uncomfortable, why is that happening? I have keratoconus btw
Could be the landing zone/peripheral curves need to be adjusted. Hard to say obviously without knowing your eyes and what was fit. Definitely let your doc know!
I just got told I have astigmatism I told the Dr that during the summer months I really have a hard time with pain in my eyes to were I got to pull over bc the pain in my eyes make it to were I can't c bc my eyes close tight even at night

Yes. This lens is much bigger. Wider diameter, and rests on the white part of your eye as opposed to sitting directly on the cornea. THey can definitely be used on post-LASIK irregular corneas.
Hello! I am a 3rd year mechanical engineering student and I just got my Corneal cross-linking procedure done 15 days ago and my doctor has suggested me to try out the hard lenses now. What is your opinion on that? Would RGPs or Scleral lenses suit me better as per my profession in the future?
First, I will say that either will be a good choice. I have numerous patients in both RGP's and sclerals with a variety of jobs. I have electricians, surveyors, and a plumber in sclerals and they like them because they don't pop out. However, RGP's when fit well stay put nicely as well. Most doctors are moving toward sclerals in general over RGP's because they vault over the cornea entirely and allow for the cornea to change slightly and not require a new fit. There is some room for change under that scleral lens. Ultimately, your topography and corneal readings will determine what is going to fit you the best. Best of luck to you!

Great video. I have RGP LENSE. I randomly get extreme pain and redness in one of my eyes. Do you have any input on how I can resolve this issue?
It really depends what is causing it....lens edge? Overall fit? Dryness? No way to tell without seeing you. Definitely have your doctor take a look!

Really difficult to say without knowing your cornea and your case...I'm sorry!

What does the process of getting sclerals look like and how much does the whole process cost?
It usually requires several visits to the doctor o make sure the fit is perfect, so it's not the fastest process in the world. It also isn't what most would consider cheap, but that's going to vary greatly depending on which office you go to, how many follow ups you need, and what kind of correction is needed. Remember, sclerals are completely custom fit to your exact eye anatomy and prescription needs.
What would cause your scaleral lens to cloud up after putting it in?
There’s a few things that can cause. Fit is a big one. If they fog after wearing for a bit, one trick to to change the viscosity of the solution in the bowl of the lens. Try a preservative free artificial tear mixed with your scleralfill. Ask your doctor which one might be best. This has worked for me with patients before but I had to work with them to find the right artificial tear and mix of saline to artificial tear.
