I have Posterior Polymorphous Corneal Dystrophy, which is a rare genetic disease. Because of the multitude of lesions on my cornea, I have severe astigmatism and have never been able to see well with glasses or contact lenses. At the time, my optometrist had ever seen PPCD before because it was still fairly undocumented and I was too young to consider surgery, so he decided to fit me for scleral lenses as an experimental treatment. This is an interesting option for those of us suffering from severe dry eyes. Thanks for the tutorial! (P.S. Your co-host was pleasant and helpful, too.)
Great video!! I’ve gotten such dry eyes going through menopause that I can’t wear my usual soft contacts anymore. I have an appointment in two weeks for the sclera lenses! I’m so excited 🎉
I like the way you tell the story, thanks for the sharing, I have also keratoconus condition and my eyes are very very sensitive specially in the light❤❤❤❤❤
After years of pain (because of dry eyes which started with my graft versus host disease.) They finally gave me scleral lenses and man, since then i have no pain anymore. I can see much better again. I'm really happy with it. They do cost a pretty penny but they are worth it!
My eye doctor yesterday told me she wants to try this type of lens. I have palsy to left side of my face and left eye has a platinum plate in the eye lid to help it close. The plate sits closer to the inside of my eye. Do you think I can wear this type of lens with a plate? My doctor has spent 2 years fighting various eye infections and dry eye. That has settled down with the Xylitol eye drops. But my vision is extremely blurry and no corrected eye glasses has given me clear vision. She is thinking we should try this. Before I spend a lot down this path. I wonder what your thoughts are in using this with a plate ?
Can scleral contacts be worn after a corneal graft has occurred & fully healed with the stitch only being removed after a full 18months in both donor corneal grafts? I suffer with kc & have tried hard contacts in both eyes before resorting to the grafts & obviously couldn’t wear them either time. That however was 9/10 years ago that I tried a hard contact for the 2nd time before my latest graft as a last ditch effort before 2nd graft. I now wear strong prescription glasses having my lenses tweaked every 2 years. I’ve never heard of this option. I’m in Australia & under an ophthalmologist & specialist optometrist.
I would love to try these I wear regular + 5 in both eyes very bad astigmatism where do I go to get these can you wear them to bed shower how often do you change them?
These are considered a specialty type of contact lens. A lot of eye doctors fit them, some don't. You don't sleep or shower with them on. One pair can usually last at least a year, usually longer than that.
I have Keratoconus and severe dry eye to the point that my eyeballs are very very sore & tender to touch, my eyes also run and it looks like I am constantly crying. I tried scleral lenses and could see perfectly however due to the tenderness of my eye balls they were really uncomfortable, my right eye constantly pours of fluid and don't know why.
Are you doing any better with them? I can no longer get good vision out of my torics and my eyes are quite dry causing intermittent ptosis which I heard these lenses can also help with. I'd like to know more about these lenses but I'm afraid I'll be disappointed after spending so much and it will be another bust.
Just got my pair and it is incredible how well I can see now (-12 in both eyes). They are very comfortable, far more comfortable than even soft lens - I'm amazed.
I was going to say that, too. Sometimes happens to me. I live in the desert which is dry, but just take them out and really flood them with saline and replace them.
@@sele8403That's the brand that the doctor recommended to me, and I use it..Seldom do they get foggy anymore, if so, I just redo it..Best eyesight I have ever had.. As I'm thinking about this eye popping thing I am wondering if I don't pop my eyes out a little bit from time to time. I can't see my eyes but once in a while they do something funny and they feel weird. I can't blink properly and I kind of have to pop it back in which is never really an issue. It does it on its own and I just have to wait a few seconds. Weird. I hope this doesn't mean I can't get scleral lenses.
I have a severe stigmatism and severe dry eye and I just learned about Scleral lenses and the fact that your eyeballs get to swim in contact fluid all day. That sounds like heaven too me! I can’t wait to find out if my insurance covers this.
Is there a way for me to get a scleral lens without a Rx? When I was fitted for my left scleral lens, the doctor put a non-Rx lens on my eye & my vision was perfect
In a way..... between the lens curvature and the solution between the lens and the eye, this will have a refractive power built into those structures automatically. Sometimes when that refractive power is already exact for that patient, then there isn't a power needed in the actually lens.
I'm hoping to get these for my dry eyes caused by mgd. I wonder do they make the eyes feel "normal" as in no dryness or do they just make them less dry? I also read there can be wettability issues in terms of the outside of the lens getting dry. Hopefully hydra peg works
That can be a challenge... the wettability issues. Luckily technology is making them better. I wouldn't say that they make your eyes feel "normal", but can definitely help the comfort and vision with certain types of dryness.
@@DrEyeGuy thanks. I guess the surface of the lens being dry doesn't feel as bad as the actual cornea getting dry? I'm hoping to be fit for a mini scleral. So my cornea would be covered but wonder about the exposed sclera of my eye which won't be covered. It.has a lot of redness but I read the sensations of grittiness, pain etc. Come from the cornea not the sclera.
The sclerals cover the whole Sclera (on the white part) and so the edges aren’t sitting on the edge of the highly sensitive cornea that has lots of nerve endings making small hard lenses uncomfortable.
Can you use gel tears throughout the day if you have scleral lenses? Blink Gel tears work best for me to make my eyes clear. Btw thanks for the awesome video
The preservatives in the gel drops may cause an issue with the lens after a while. There are preservative free drops and gel drops that you could use. Thanks for the comment!
I also don’t think any wetting drops will get under the edge of the lens, nor should they as you should be using sterile saline not to be contaminated by gel. Just my guess.
Hi , I just got my Scleral lenses for my dry eyes. I need to go back to get the vision adjusted however my eyes go very red when I remove them, even if it’s only been 5 hours. Is that normal?
Don you think Scalrels would work for someone with high astigmatism (too high for normal contacts), Congenital Nystagmus with a horizontal jerk and Optic Nerve Hypoplasia thats corrected to somewhere between 20/40-60?
Yes, scleral lenses are great for high astigmatism amounts. It may be a challenge to get them in depending on the severity of the nystsgmus, but definitely an option. The optic nerve hypoplasia would still limit your vision.
I made an appointment for scleral lenses. I didn't research what doctor I should see I just had my insurance send me a list and called the first guy on the list and made an appointment. I first heard about scleral lenses maybe a year go I'm not sure. I'm mostly interested in it for my dry eye but I have myopia despite laser surgery 25 years ago. I didn't know I wasn't a good candidate until after when I was still near sighted (Albeit a bit less near sighted) the next day after having the procedure done. I found out my eyes regressed some overnight. And I got dry eye and floaters to boot. Both are horrible. 25 years later and they haven't just "gone away" like the doctors all say they will. Yes, your brain gets better at filtering them out but that's tiring and in my case when I need to read something I get tons of eye strain. When I'm not reading anything it's a bit better. But I'm really hoping this can help my dry eye. And if I could see really well too that would be great. I like travelling to Asia and they are big on masks. My glasses fog right up - way more than anyone else wearing glasses as far as I can tell despite my best efforts. Anyway, I'm hoping this works out well. One reason I didn't try this sooner is the eye doctor RUclipsr "Doctor Eye Health" has dry eye which he talks about... and yet he doesn't use these lenses. At least not that he's said. If he doesn't use them then maybe they're not as good for treating dry eyes (or so I thought). But you never know until you try. It's not surgery so if it doesn't work out I can just not wear them. And be a few thousand dollars poorer but oh well.
Hi, I have a very early keratoconus on my left eye, and my right eye is not diagnosed, but the doctor said they should be monitored closely. Also, my vision is far better in my right eye compared to my left eye, but I have no double vision problem tbf. Only that glasses can't really fix my vision especially on the left eye itself. When using personalized scleral lenses, which are said to treat irregular astigmatism, what are my chances of achieving 20/20 vision on both eyes? Thanks
If you have an early diagnosis they should be looking at having crosslinking done on your eyes to strengthen the cornea, and slow the progression of the disease. Then you can look at scleral lenses. And they will work for you absolutely.
@DQyoutuber no problem. If it's caught early, that's really the best case scenario. It gives you the best chance to slow down the progression and stabilize it before it gets worse. I've had keratoconus for the better part of 25 years, and had a cornea transplant on my right eye. Crosslinking wasn't an option back then. There are many options these days to deal with it and still achieve great vision. I hope everything works out well for you.
Hi all. I have keratoconus in both eyes. I am using sclearals for a weak. I expected to have a sharp vision at once but unfortunately I still have a blurry vision. The doctor said that my brain needs some time (a month or two) to adjust them. However, I cant find any other feedback and story like that. I am afraid that the lenses are not properly fitted. Anyone else having this kind of experience? Thanks in advance.
Yes, it took about 3 weeks for my eyes to adjust to the new vision. If you have concerns, definitely talk to your Dr because some contact brands have a warranty and you can exchange if it isn't the right one for you.
@@DrEyeGuy Yeah they fit them. I was curious about this because I asked the receptionist and she said the Eyeglass Rule does not apply to Scleral Lenses
@@DrEyeGuy ftc eyeglass Rule:requires that optometrists and ophthalmologists provide patients a copy of their prescription after the completion of an eye examination without extra cost.
@@ReyRakolta-fh4cv Ohh... I understand. Did they fit you in the scleral contacts and then finalize the prescription? If they finalized the prescription, then that is part of your record that you have access too. But, I will say this with scleral contacts. They are incredibly specific, parameters and design form the different companies. Unfortunately you can just shop around like you can for soft contacts or some hard contacts.
I had a contact lense trial 21 years ago. When the optician put the lenses into my eyes the first time I couldn't believe how clear everything looked. Unfortunately that was the only time I managed to get the lenses into my eyes. At the time I was living in a hostel and didn't have access to a mirror and I wasn't able to get the lenses into my eyes so I had to give up on that. I would love to give it a try again because the difference between wearing glasses and contact lenses is beyond a day and night change. Everything was so much clearer. But I'm nearly 49 years old and my prescription is -7.75 left eye -7.5 right eye.
just try and go for it , no one is too old for that , after almost 40 yrs wearing my soft lenses ( minus around 6,5 and 7 ) it's not a great feeling to wear glasses after my under eye bleph
there is problem with me I'm a keratoconus patient and i uses sclear lens for my left eye and it goes smoothly..but when i take that lens off there is red circle around my eyeball and it burns after taking it out for a few seconds...is it normal? ...what can i fo for that
Happens to me too. Definitely talk to your doctor, but for me it's like if you wear a scrunchie on your wrist all day, then when you take it off it's got a little dent in your skin and it's a little sore. The contacts touching your eyeball is just going to leave a little bit of an indent until your eye rests a little bit.
Yes, unfortunately right. They are some of the priciest contact out there. If you have insurance, it's worth looking into if you have medically necessary contact coverage... that helps a lot.
I just got scleral lenses, and after a couple of hours wearing them, they get foggy, or I can't see clear with them after a few hours . What could be causing this issue?
I'm desperately looking for answers and have watch many videos but none have actually answered my concern which at the same time, is making clear to me that the situation is in fact wrong. I recently got a scleral for my right eye (I'm also wearing a hard contact on my left) and vision is not as expected. It's like the prescription was wrong. I have a hard time focusing to read, and it makes me angry cause I was told that once I stick this in my eye I will be able to see perfectly. Well, not true. I can see much better with my left contact which is not a scleral lens. My doctor said that my eyes and brain have to adapt to the change but not only I'm not seeing (no pun intended) an improvement after a week of using it but I spend my whole day uncomfortable and dizzy due to the weird vision. So I wonder if I would really ever be confortable wearing this or if I would have to pay again to get a new one since I feel this isn't my fault, especially because it is too expensive. Every review I've seen explain how great the feel about the new lenses but in my case, I can't say I'm impressed.
When you went in for your follow ups, did they say that the power was ok? Sometimes contacts can make the "distortion" clearer as well. People that have corneal irregularities may have clearer vision with the lenses, but also notice the distortion the cornea causes a little bit more, if that makes sense.
@@DrEyeGuy Thank you for taking the time to reply. They scheduled me to a 2 weeks after appointment when they gave me this lens saying that by then everything would be fine but, again, it doesn't seem to get better. So right now I do not have ''an explanation'' of what could be wrong. I found odd that they let me go without an answer... but let see what happens when I visit next time.
@DrEyeGuy Hey there. So I wanted to check back with you since you were kind enough to reply last time to let you know that I ended up going to the doctor again and it wasn't a great visit. I was told that this is probably a matter of time for my brain to adapt. In my message, I forgot to include an important point. I got a cornea transplant 10 years ago and thank God I never had any further issue. My vision was not good but was far better than it was before the surgery. I was then unable to use the hard lenses I used before because, the ''scars'' or something didn't let that lens sit well and it would always pop-out from my eye. So, long story short I have not wear any typo of lens on that eye for years. The doctor insist that this is the reason why I'm not seeing well right now as my brain is processing ''this new information'' I was told to comeback in the next few weeks with no promise that this would work. This is very frustrating because I haven't notice any improvement since I started using them, so my patience is on a test here. I feel like the explanation makes sense but in the other hand, it is funny cause I can still remember how he made jokes and created this hype for me having a ''4K vision'' to now, tell me that this vision is good considering my history. I mean, what!? Couldn't you just tell me this is going to be a long process from the get go? I can't think I'm the only one which have not wear lenses for a long period of time who then tries a new ones and feels weird and not comfortable. I understand that every patient is different but... anyways, I apologize for my long comment. Thank you for reading!
You should try them..I have keratoconus, and had cross-linking surgery, was fitted with these lenses...I can't see the E without my lenses, but have 20-20 with these lenses...
Would you rather do liquid stem cell therapy drops daily 3xs a day for life at $384 a bottle per month for life and that doesn't really resolve the problem? My cornea specialist Says I can do contacts but will Not write it in my medical chart for the ophthalmologist to prescribe a contact. I only have 1 eye that needs correction. I'd personally rather go back to a scalera contact and feel/see better than waste money for Big pharma.

Only if they fit them. Usually it's an optometrist that is fitting them, but im sure there ophthalmologists out there that fit them as well.
@@DrEyeGuy Yeah they fit them. I was curious about this because I asked the receptionist and she said the Eyeglass Rule does not apply to Scleral Lenses
@@ReyRakolta-fh4cv What do you mean by the "eyeglass rule"?
I checked out the cost of these lenses. Holy crap they’re expensive. $500 to $1000 PER LENS. Yikes
Yes, unfortunately right. They are some of the priciest contact out there. If you have insurance, it's worth looking into if you have medically necessary contact coverage... that helps a lot.
My gas permeable is 400 dollars KCis expensive
I just got scleral lenses, and after a couple of hours wearing them, they get foggy, or I can't see clear with them after a few hours .
What could be causing this issue?
Dry eye
its a request can U make a video on palinopsia
That would be an interesting video to make... I'll put it on my list. Thank you for the idea.
That me All of above
I wouldn't be willing to pay almost anything My vision is like 2,300 in one eye and 2100 in the other sorry for all the comments
Wendy...we like comments! The channel likes comments!!! It's all good!!!!
You can comment as much as you want!
@@leandroelias3015 dang, sorry to hear that. I'll still hold on to hope that things will get better for you.
@@leandroelias3015 Curious, Has there been an improvement after a month?
I was quoted $3500 for a Scleral lense.
Of course he did not see it !!! I know there are different degrees of eye problems, I cannot even see E on Snellan chart.
You should try them..I have keratoconus, and had cross-linking surgery, was fitted with these lenses...I can't see the E without my lenses, but have 20-20 with these lenses...
😂that story!!!!
Haha! Crazy stories in this one.
These lenses sounds like the same hard contact lenses I first started wearing 40 yrs ago, just much more expensive.
No. Not at all. They rest on the sclera, not the highly sensitive, nerve packed cornea.
We're they as big?
Contact lenses have most risky devastating Risk and its called Acanthamoeba keratitis, You aware of that doctor? i wouldn't want to wear it
Yes I have, that's why doctors and patients need to know the proper hygiene with contact lens use.
🤣
😂😂😂
Lies dont do it money trap!!!!
Don't do what?? Wear scleral lenses?
Would you rather do liquid stem cell therapy drops daily 3xs a day for life at $384 a bottle per month for life and that doesn't really resolve the problem? My cornea specialist Says I can do contacts but will Not write it in my medical chart for the ophthalmologist to prescribe a contact. I only have 1 eye that needs correction. I'd personally rather go back to a scalera contact and feel/see better than waste money for Big pharma.
Problems with my vision for years. I have a drawer full of glasses. None worked. Discovered severe dry eye with pitted corneas, caused by autoimmune disorders. New scleral lenses, but extremely hard to get used to because my my deep set small eye opening. Vision awesome with lenses, but they coat over with eye “goo” so quickly. Trying various fixes, but worth the effort for sure.
