Not the way to do C/R Ian, use a net and keep the fish in the water all the time. I know you are old and have been fishing salmon since before the vikings raided there but still. Pls use a net :)
I normally carry my net on the Thurso as it is difficult to unhook fish in the water. I did mention that I had forgotten to take my net from the back of the motor I wasn't going to add this video to my efforts but was talked into it by others who had problems with C&R. Cheers Iain. 🥃
@@IainSB Yes but many that are readint the comment will learn to use a net because of it so it had a purpose and wasnt formulated to make you some kind of victim:)
I deserve all that is thrown at me. I wasn't going to add this to RUclips but was talked into it by some others. I knew that I was in for some finger pointing but it may let others see how not to do it. some places I don't use a net even if I have one on my back I prefer to unhook fish in the water as I have seen so many scales on some landing nets. once scales are removed from the fish it does stand a chance of infection in that area. I think it is all about fish welfare and I cocked up big time
And MrKveite1 your flies are tied from natural material ie say wool etc and not from slaughtered birds or animals that tie your fly, it really bugs me this, save the fish but kill to tie my flies for my sport. Yes Iain bring your net next time makes the job a lot easier.
It should never have happened like that Paul. I maid a right mess of the whole thing. I have left myself open to a lot of finger pointing and deserve it as I left my net up at the car park. that was the biggest mistake on the river Thurso Cheers Iain. 🥃
Thanks Shaun I had to work hard for that one but I should never have been caught out on the river Thurso without a net. it shows that on some rivers that a net is essential. Cheers Iain.
Thanks Duncan I am using a rio scandi short multi tip I always seem to fish with the floating tip and have had to replace it a few times . I also like to add a floating polly tip. I think my rod is an 7 weight but use an 8. Cheers Iain. 🥃
Good to see your perseverance pay off Iain, tricky to land the fish when your line is tangled, well done for not breaking the rod tip, and for righting the fish downstream, good to see it swim off!! Cheers Peter. More fish are coming, I'm sure. Midge net and repellent essential or the little devils will spoil your fun!!. As your film showed 2 weeks ago, with that big salmon on the Tweed, some good fish reported on the Findhorn too.
I had forgotten certain things Peter. I had a problem parking my vehicle as the farmer was unloading a large trailer. once I managed to head down over the bridge I noticed that I had forgotten my landing net , midge cream and head net. as I said in the video you would think that I had never fished before Cheers Iain 🥃
Shirt sleeve weather again Ian Nice to see a fish though. Tricky moments managed but main thing fish was back in the water. Thanks again for giving us an insight into salmon fishing trials and tribulations 😂
There are quite a few rivers that you are allowed to keep a fish or two Rodney and the river Thurso is one of them and if the river has a lot of salmon in them I like to take the odd fish home as I won't buy farmed fish. I did make a mess of returning that fish as I had genuinely forgotten to take my net to the river. I wasn't going to add this video to RUclips but was talked into it by other anglers partly to show how not to do things. I have broad enough shoulders to admit I made a complete rectum of proceedings and hope in the future not to be caught out. I do however on some rivers never carry a net as I prefer to unhook fish while still in the water as I believe that nets can remove scales from the fish and induce disease Cheers Iain. 🥃
That was good to see ....a fish.. and dealt with well despite the pickle you were in... Could have done with s good breeze on the water. The bar won again 😂🍺
Mr Mazo you are being very diplomatic with your comment I could have done with a good wind blowing upstream and a lack of memory block. I might have remembered my net and never ended up in such a mess Cheers Iain. 🥃
Extremely clumsy Tam I usually have my net wherever I go on the Thurso and I had a bit brain fade when I headed to the river . I bent over on the river bank but there was no one there to kick me up the bum Cheers Iain. 🥃
@@IainSB Ahh yes, that’s what I thought. I actually have the same rod, I was just curious what line you were using with it. I like yourself feel the #7 VersiTip doesn’t load it up enough. I also have the R8 12’6 #7 and that seems fine with the Rio scandi outbound body #7 which uses the same Rio replacement tips, so effectively its more or less a VersiTip with integrated running line. Tight lines 🎣
The river Thurso was full of fish James..... there were a few anglers that never did any catching after putting a lot of effort into their day Cheers Iain. 🥃
I think it was all my fault Brian what a mess I made of the whole landing and returning I wasn't going to edit this one but friends asked me to add it. Cheers Iain. 🥃
Great vid as always Iain, a net makes the job easier. You are a very experienced angler and a very good one.

@@IainSB That's why it's recommended to use a knotless rubber net for C/R as it doesnt have any edges that can remove scales from the fish:)

Great stuff Iain, perseverance paid off, impressed with the way you dealt with the fish, turning it over after release, something new for me. Thanks

Great video as usual, what line are you using , lovely scenery as well 😀👍👍

Well done Iain, and your kind aftercare to help the fish fully recover.
Nick from York
I did make a mess of it Nick but was glad to see the fish swim right way up. Cheers Iain. 🥃
Well done Iain that fish was nicely hooked and well dealt with. Great to meet a fish any day. 🍺
I did make a mess of that one Paddy and was glad to see it turn right way up Cheers Iain. 🥃
Waow, nice catch, congrats. Great video. Cheers 👍👊
Thanks Tommy the catch was good but the angler was useless. I made a mess of releasing and returning the fish
Cheers Iain. 🥃

Nice day on the river and at least you caught a fish, wonderful place to be and lots of little fishes but no bites, beer time now 🍺🥃
I T sent an email out and Hope to see you on the 17th usual place Beer o'clock 🥃
Shirt sleeve weather again Ian
Nice to see a fish though. Tricky moments managed but main thing fish was back in the water. Thanks again for giving us an insight into salmon fishing trials and tribulations 😂
the trials and tribulations were of my own doing I should have remembered my net Cheers Iain. 🥃
As most rivers nowadays are total catch and release I suggest that it should be compulsory to carry a net at all times when salmon fishing.

Nice one Iain... well done getting a fish in those conditions... if the clouds had stayed you likely would have got more action! Cheers James 🥃
Thanks James Its a pity I made a mess of the release but it swam of eventually Cheers Iain. 🥃

What rod and line is this? I know it’s an R8 Spey, but what version?
its a switch rod 7 weight John but I am using an 8 rio Scandi Short with a 5ft polly tip Cheers Iain. 🥃

You deserve a fish for all your efforts Iain
Thanks Burnie I deserved the fish but what a mess. as I said in the video you would think that I had never fished before
