I had never fished the Brora before Dennis and since adding these Two videos a lot of anglers have asked me not to add any more because they want to keep it for themselves I can understand why Cheers Iain 🥃
I had never given the Brora an any thought because I hadn't heard anything about it Paul. I would love to have the opportunity to fish in the summer with the same hight of water. Cheers Iain 🥃
Hi Iain, hope you got another line for your rod , what a gorgeous piece of water you had there the wind certainly blew the line about a bit , but still you had a few sea trout none the less. Great viewing Iain and tight lines on the next trip. 🍷Steve.
Sorry I never got back to your last reply Stephen . I have been a bit busy and trying to squeeze a bit of fishing in as well . I will have a look at buying the airflow line . There were a lot of sea trout in the river and I think that if I had worked the fly a bit quicker then would have gone for it . I was hoping for a salmon but not to be Maybe next trip 😉. Cheers Iain. 🥃
The Salmon appeared to be going past us and heading upstream Paddy. I think that there were 10 caught on the upper river the week we were there for our two days Cheers Iain. 🥃
What a lovely river thats is plenty of sea trout in there for spring time good sport lack of salmon tho like my local river severn flogging devon minnows for hours. Tight lines Ian love your videos 👌🎣
I think that the salmon were traveling past without stopping Mark. The upper river had 10 fish that week . we were unlucky that we never got a fly in front of a fishes nose. Cheers Iain.
It was my first time splashing about on the river Brora and would gladly go back for another cast or two. I meant to say before that I enjoyed your video on the Tay and enjoyed the way the Kelt was returned safely Tight Lines Cheers Iain. 🥃
Thank you Mitchel I had to tear myself away from the river in the evening . the worst part was driving for 4 hours to get home . I was lucky as Russ had the steering wheel. Cheers Iain. 🥃
Another cracking video Ian , that's a gorgeous river maybe if there wasn't so many salmon farms off the coast there some of those sea trout might have given you a proper bend in the rod , keep em coming mate
Thanks Tommy I had so much fun and the weather was kind . this years it has been so cold with a biting east wind . it lets us know that spring is here Cheers Iain. 🥃
That river would fish really well for XXL sea trout late at night, that’s how we caught our brutes in Loen and Lærdal at pool tails . Shallow fast moving water Amazing river Iain would love to join one spring. It is a real possibility as I have close family in Bergen We could fish 20 hrs out of a 24 hr period with a 4 hr rest period 2 pm - 6pm in most rivers
You have some fantastic water to fish Schevo. The Lærdal has a great reputation . years ago we came to Bergen on a family holiday and I had the operunity to fish near the Hardanger Fiord and also for trout near Ski Great memories. Cheers Iain. 🥃
one of the other anglers said that he had one on that was about 4lb Christopher I wasn't that lucky the biggest I had was about 3/4 lb I am sure that come the summer the sea trout would be all over 2lb Cheers Iain. 🥃
the reel I am fishing with is a J W Young 1540 Raf they were one of the cheapest salmon reels on the market . I know of several anglers that fish with them and never had a bit of bother . I have had the small Paul ware and was able to get the part to repair very easily and only cast a couple of pounds. My reels are around 40years old and still;l sound as good as the day I bought them Cheers Iain. 🥃
Iain I've this question before around the line you used and you suggested Rio Scandi short multi tip but the question I don't seem to know is, do you also have a Rio shooting line as part of the setup? Also any recommendations on a fly reel for an 8# rod
I use the cheapest running line I can find Stevie. Most of the ones that I have are mill end and I think that I paid about £7.99 and thought it a good price and bought ten of them. I have bought expensive reels in the past and most of them are in a drawer covered in dust. I prefer a reel that can hold a lot of line and is heavy enough to balance the rod. It makes it a lot easier to cast if the balance is right and the reel acts as a pendulum to assist in the effort to load the rod. I think that is why I tend to go for the old heavier reels. Another point I would like to add in. the mix is I usually have a line size heavier than stated on the rod. usually line weights go up in 50 gram increments and over the tenth of a fly line this is not very much added to the body of a fly line . 50 grams is the weigh of a 5pence and over the length of a line is very little but can make a bit of difference to loading the rod. For instance some of my 7 weight rods I use a 9weight line and it suits the rod and loads it without causing any problems I am fortunate that over the years I have accumulated a lot of lines and can mix and match to get a good result for ease of casting and getting a better distance I hope this helps Cheers Iain. 🥃
I am quite fortunate to have had the opportunity to have fished for salmon for a long time and collected a lot of tackle that I use at different times and rivers . on the trip to the Brora I was using a Sage 12.9 TCR which is possibly 25 years old . I have the cheapest running line I could find £7.99 the shooting head is an airflow rage compact 10/11 with a Rio 10ft tip `. Spending a bit of money for a lesson with a casting instructor for an hour or two is well worth it. I know of lots or people that can cast of both shoulders and cover the water a lot better Cheers Iain. 🥃
Lovely days fishing that Iain... you are now the Seatrout King!🎣🫅👍 Cheers James 🥃
It was unexpected James never having fished the Brora or heard that much about it it all came as a pleasant surprise
Cheers Iain. 🥃

Lovely looking river. Crazy how many sea trout were shoaled up there.
I think that I would have caught a lot more if I had made the fly move quicker but wanted desperately to catch a Brora salmon.
Cheers Iain. 🥃
Looks a beautiful river to fish. Good to get some sport with the seatrout for you though.
I had a great time and Josh did the organising You will need to watch the next video that I am editing at the moment Tobby Tight Lines Cheers Iain. 🥃

I don't think that I had a single iron on while at the Brora Cheers Iain. 🥃
