Decades ago, in '82, I went through security at Dallas international airport with 3 rifles in our suitcases. A big sign said report all firearms. The suitcases had already gone through the machine as I asked where & who to report guns to. I stated that we had 3 riffles and they reran the bags and had security posses the bags. They had totally missed the 3 rifles the first time. I wasn't comfortable with airport security then, and I'm not now either.

It's much better now though obviously. I think the worst aspect of security is still likely on the air side/ cargo side. How could they "miss" 3 rifles on an X-Ray Machine?

Apparently the Samsonite crossbracing disguised them a bit at the time plus the other solid objects in with them. When the cases were rerun the two young ladies really stared at the screen to be sure that I wasn't lying and that's when security took control of the bags. All three were 22 short barrel rifles.

That was in 1982. Security measures weren't as strict, then, as they are now.

Forgot about the 'title'. Air India 182 happened in June, 1985. The first 'bombing' shown in this episode was onboard Northwest 253, Christmas Day 2009.

Some conflicting facts here. If security is so tight how are people still getting guns past security screening? How are so many people getting onboard A/C without tickets? Security methods aren't enforced as they should be.

@@scootermom1791 I can think of a few ways a bomb could possibly get onboard a plane, or any sort of weapon.
1. Airport employees since they access the interior controls and plane.
2. Someone was to sneak in and plant something outside or inside the plane without boarding.
3. It can possibly get past security during TSA training, faulty system error, human error, or possibly be hidden very well which is very unlikely.
If someone was smart enough to separate bomb parts that are buildable on the plane (which has happened before) those small parts might not get flagged during security check and could make it aboard the plane. Also again very unlikely BUT these are all possibilities that CAN happen. Hope this helps
@@nevv343 good points. Of the scenarios you presented, I think negligent and/or nefarious employees would be the most likely to occur. It's interesting you mentioned the TSA training scenario. I was totally floored when I first learned about this flight and the other bombs that were supposed to go off. Employees were literally being trained on how to detect a possible bomb; scanned the luggage with a bomb; yet didn't check it out...just to be safe! There were so many things that went wrong due to employee negligence in the case of this flight and the other bombs.
Faulty detectors is something I hadn't considered, but it makes sense. I could see that happening - even with the high security standards in place now - for both bombs and other weapons.
As far as having separate components placed within their luggage and not being detected, I don't think the chances of that are as high as they used to be...as least not for bringing aboard guns. Bombs? Possibly, but after failed attacks from both the "shoe bomber" and the so-called "underwear bomber," it's not very likely.
However, instead of implementing reactive solutions to terrorism, Security needs to be ahead of their "game" so-to-speak. They need to have better measures in place to prevent any terrorist attempt to begin with. Idk how feasible that is, but thankfully things are safer than they were in the decades before the 9/11 attacks.
@@scootermom1791I appreciate that, and I agree with everything you said. Everything I listed is so VERY unlikely to happen. Crashes are more likely to happen because of human error, and even those type of crashes are very rare. BUT the unfortunate thing is that anything could happen. It could be a series of events that go unchecked & ignored which can lead to a terrorist attack. Recently I went to the airport and they had people training in TSA security. They told us if we had to get on a flight soon to move to a non training tsa line, since it would take longer if i didn’t. which is what I did. They have been taking procedures very seriously and those who are training for TSA security need every amount of practice they can get. Im thankful for the amount of security we have in airports, but unfortunately it took this amount of terrorism and attacks to get to this point. I’m always paranoid no matter how safe the area is, because now with the amount of security we have. The only thing we need to worry about is malpractice and pilot / human error.

Wrong title! You're mixing up the ATTEMPTED bombing of Northwest Airlines (Delta Air Lines) flight 253, which did occur on Christmas Day 2009, with Air India flight 182, which happened in June 1985 and resulted in the destruction of the plane with the loss of all onboard.

If atmospheric pressure is what triggers the explosion, why the hell wouldnt they put these suit cases ect through a device that mimics atmospheric pressure prior to loading onto the plane?
There is also the possibility of murder suicide by pilot such as the possibility like Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 - and - Germanwings Flight 9525 - and - possibly SilkAir Flight 185 - we all deal with stress everyday and pilots are human - just most unfortunate for the passengers

Can remember trying to get home with my junior brother (4yrs old) in January 2020.
We bought him a toy gun during our stay there. Unfortunately, we both had to travel alone without our mom.
We were held for long at checkin because of the gun, then at security. To make matters worse, they thought I was both a form of threat and a child abductor (because his passport was issued that he could only travel with a company, my mom).
He was later allowed to keep the gun, on condition it travelled as cargo.
As for the Visa issue, was resolved through the airline tickets confirmation.

It literally says on the Wikipedia page of this flight "Most of the victims resided in southern Ontario and were Hindus. Some of the victims were Sikhs; around 35 passengers were Sikhs from Greater Montreal"
