- How to weather a model tank without using expensive tools and products.
Model: Tamiya's rebox of Asuka's 1/35 scale Sherman VC Firefly.
The Sherman VC Firefly was a M4A4 modified to carry the new 17-pounder gun, as the previous 2-pounder and 6-pounders had not been effective against German rivals. The Firefly was so effective that German troops were ordered to prioritise the Firefly as a target in battle during the Second World War.
An extremely good kit with great detail and moving parts, but quite complex at times. Therefore I would only recommend this kit to more advanced modellers. I've found that subtle discolouration in the paintwork and minimal weathering has given it quite a realistic look.
This kit is actually moulded by Tasca (formerly Asuka), known as a manufacturer of superbly engineered and well detailed Sherman kits, and re-boxed by Tamiya.

Fantastic job! Well I am into miniature modeling and model railroads for many years (rarely military though)and I have seen many (!) a professional model with bad weathering. I usually find the airbrushing of dust build up too unconvincing, rust streaks too filhy and most of all: dry brushing with lighter colors makes almost everything look like rocks or icy. I find your painting and weathering very convincing. It all blends together extremely well. No worries: from what I have read and seen: even seasoned pros make huge mistakes (I am not one of these) and need to correct these. Your work is always top notch! Thanks so much for sharing!

Yeah it's a useful one, I always use it to neaten up canopies on planes :)
I should have said that I haven't sealed the model with varnish - I didn't want any discolouration or for it to disturb the washes, though I know it will make them vulnerable to being rubbed off. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and seeing me mess up a bit! :D

If you're looking for a new model to do, I would strongly recommend the new tool 1:72 scale airfix hawker typhoon, fantastic build, loads of detail, options for rockets, open gun cases on the wings, open cockpit and plenty of interior detail

Oh and actually the weathering isnt unrealistic at all if this was a sherman firefly used in Afrika it would represent the sand and dusty effect so it isnt unrealistic in that aspect

Awesome as usual Owen.! Looks amazing, the weathering came out perfect in my opinion. I see people talking about painting the figures, you should give it a shot. I paint 15mm and 28mm Napoleonic units which can be tricky at the start, but gradually it gets easier. But anyway loving the videos and can't wait for more planes!.

I really think you did a good job on the weathering. I especially like the restraint you used in adding chips to the model. Too many models are so over chipped they look like derelicts and not functioning tanks. I like the use of the watercolors and artist acrylics for the weathering. It has the look of a used vehicle with light dust. It is a really good job and I look forward to your next project.
I agree, on my Pzkpfw IV I added chipping to pretty much every edge - I thought it looked good at the time because I saw other people doing it but now I'm not sure haha! Thanks for your great comment, I appreciate it, and I'm glad you like the model :)
Some games workshop texture paint, Agrellan badland is amazing dabbed on the tracks and inside the track assembly! Looks so real after drying and drybrushing with some brown on top!

Your too hard on yourself, but when you take a hobby very seriously you try your very best. Luckily model tanks are not my main hobby. I admire your work tremendously. I would be thrilled if I was half as good as you. It takes dedication and passion for you to excel at a hobby you love. Mine is bonsai. Love your videos.
I just subscribed, after watching this 3 video series, what you do looks good. However I won't be able to watch as often unfortunately as where I usually live I don't have any internet.
I bought canopy glue for clear parts. It dries clear and looks very nice with canopys, windows, and lights. it's only about 3 bucks and sticks well. I recommend this for you cause PVA glue also leaves these tiny spots of foggy white not like cement but it still is bothering if you look real carefully.
The only suggestion I would make is to consider adding some 'bare metal' weathering on high traffic areas such as the hatches. This is a technique that is used a lot by aircraft modellers. They put the relevant metal color (I would suggest a gun metal/aluminum mix) under the main color and they either us maskol or a cotton bud to rub off the over colour to achieve a realistic effect. Not sure if that is of use to you, but I think you do a fantastic job with a paint brush and provide inspiration for those who can't afford an air brush. Keep up the great work with the videos and the modeling.

Mitchell Hogg Probably - if you're brush painting then it probably won't have much effect anyway. Painting and leaving the underside black will help though - I've left it black even on this scale

Your being too hard on yourself Owen. It looks good! Weathering in real life does not always follow modelling rules and reference photos cannot always give a true account of the real thing. You done good 👍
Thank you, I'm glad you like it! :) and yeah I should have paid more attention to where the Sherman's were in the reference photos - some of the ones I looked at where in Africa in the sand I think
@@quickkits There were no Sherman Fireflys in North Africa, but there were standard Shermans with the 75mm gun.
I think it turned out well. Ad ark brown pin wash along all the edges and recesses would make that the look perfect.
For the splatterd mud, have you tried using a toothbrush for it? Much stiffer bristles and better quality on them aswell, but you get more of a subtle result with an ordinary brush.

The base green was already weathered before you started. That looked really cool. How did you achieve that effect with the uneven greens? It seemed like the best work was done before you started the video. All you really needed was a little chipping and to apply some mud effect to the tracks.
Turned out nice in the end! Have you ever thought of doing one of these kits up with the figurines?
I've thought about it - I feel I need to teach myself how to paint figures first before I feel confident teaching others, which is why I never put them in. If I did I think it would make the model look more unrealistic as I haven't practised figures much :) Anyway, glad you like the result! :D

I've never tried a tank before, which kit would you recommend?
In my opinion Brands like tamiya and hobby boss make great tanks I would take a tank from one of those Brands its best to start with 1:72 thats the easiest and one of the most fun scales

Hey Owen, just a tip with dusting. Try chalk pastels, they can be scrapped with a sharpe knife and it comes out super fine. Then just apply with a large brush.
That's a good tip, thank you! :D I was considering doing that but decided against it as I'd have had to seal the model with varnish and I always find that makes the chalk go funny... I should have done it though :/

Great video! I liked what you did with the tracks :) My Tamiya 1/35 Cheiftain Mk.3 should be coming tommorow, do you have any tips? All i have is Tamiya paints (acrylic [almost all colors]) and brushes, and regular tools :)
Thank you, I'm glad you like the tracks I was quite pleased with them :) I've not built the Cheiftain but some general tips would be don't do dark washes (for example I think this Sherman would look quite unrealistic with a dark wash) and make use of the good colour reference photos that are available. I think subtle discolouration in the paintwork will make it look realistic, so maybe work on that?
Well i'm not that good at painting but i can still do it, i'm not so sure on how to make washes but i think im gonna save that for another build that's not too expensive :D I will definently be doing some different colors around the whole thing, but it is a desert theme so i gotta be careful :)
TeamLockybros You could use water colour paint or use my chalk wash technique - these can be removed with water if you don't like them. Or yeah, just save them for another build :)
Well i don't have any watercolor but next time i go to HobbyCraft i will pick some up, i dont wanna ruin my expensive kit with that :) I just get a little/less expensive kit and try them out on that :) Thanks anyway :P

possibly not as recent documentary showed a Canadian standard Sherman hiding behind a wall got him from close range ; though a British Firefly certainly got the other 2 Tigers with him
Another great model! I was just wondering, this particular model and some other models that you have done in the past come with some crew members but you never seem to add them. Is that because you don't like painting the figures?
Yeah I don't think I can paint figures well enough - if I added them I think it would make the model look more unrealistic. However I do plan on trying in the future, I'll just have to teach myself first before I can feel confident to teach others :) Anyway, glad you like the Sherman! :D

Hi Duncan, there are lots of reasons I don't use an airbrush so I won't cover them all, the main reason is that I want this channel to be inspirational and show people what they can do without much equipment/money spent. I felt there was a gap in the RUclips modelling community as most people use airbrushes :) Thank you! :)

As I haven't tried lots of different manufacturers I can't really answer your question sorry, but I know Humbrol and Revell acrylic and enamel paints are good as they are designed for brush painting :)
I was at a mall and saw a model kit brand I had never heard of Atlantis-Models. They seem to specialize in cheap models. The model was of the IS-2/JS-2 Heavy tank. The plastic is basic, has an unnatural sheen to it. Tracks are almost impossible to put them together, mine ended up breaking if you try to connect two end pieces. So I started thinking. What could I do? I have an idea of doing a rusted and long abandoned tank left in the snow.
I figure this way would allow me to have the tracks broken look more fitting and also be able to get over the cheap looking plastic. So I have been looking at good ways to "age" the tank. I thought I could give it a dark green colored paint color to show the age of the tank, then add a rust coloring around the vehicle, then finish it off with added a snowed on effect to the tank. I was also thinking of bending the barrel of the tank a bit to make it look a bit more decrepit.
Have you had any experience doing any type of aging like that?
it looks great but many of the Sherman tanks had rubber shoes mounted on the front of the tracks certainly the one in the Imperal War Museum maybe just some models as there certainly was a great variety of versions
Looking at the pictures of a Sherman in the Bovingdon Tank Museum the tracks are similar to your model and look metal in appearance . It's rare you can ruin a tank with weathering because most finishes can be removed . observing them closely WW2 tanks are very rough ( particularly the T34 ) so a bit of texture or rough paintwork ; wouldn't be amiss . though it is very frustrating when something goes amiss near the end !
A diorama with a versus with the Panzer iv would be great
I know! :D When I bought the kits a good few years ago I had a plan to do another tank battle animation... but I don't have time for things like that any more haha!

Thanks Ben! I'd recommend you get some flock and clump foliage packs to make the grassy areas more real, and gloss varnish the water a lot. Also make sure you have quite a few very fine brushes for painting the figures :) Hope that helps

I've built an Italeri Spitfire in the past and it was good, I'll have to try another one some day. I recommend Humbrol or Revell enamels or acrylics because they are designed for brush painting, stay away from Tamiya acrylics as they are designed for airbrushes and apparently don't go on well with a brush.

If you want paint to go into corners it's a must to have a smooth (gloss) layer to put it on!
The way I dry brushed it (I assume you are referring to that?), even with a gloss coat it wouldn't have made a difference as the paint is too dry to run :)
+Quick Kits Oh, sorry for not specifying, my bad: I meant at the stage when you made the dust effect at the front (and everywhere else) of the tank. Capillary action does never work on a matt surface!
Btw you should try pure pigments mixed with thinner to make dust effects. When the thinner has evaporated you brush it of with ease where you don't want it. Then you can leave it as it is, or spray some varnish over it.

Is umber/sepia better or black wash for aircraft? And will my white primer work for models? Cause it's the only colour I have, I could buy more. And I don't know if the primer is intended for plastic or models
White primer should be fine so long as it's thin. Wash colour is down to personal preference - for me, maybe a dark grey with a bit of brown?

Tommy Lakasi If I were you I'd go down to an art shop and buy a set of chalk pastels (make sure a black, brown and white is included) and then you can make washes of whatever shade you like (see my video on chalk washes). If you want to buy a vallejo wash I'd say perhaps go with the dark brown?

What thinner/enamel ratio do you use?
1 part thinner to 7 parts paint, or less (so sometimes 1 part thinner to 4 parts paint)
I think what happened to you with the upper hull is why I personally prefer oil based weathering techniques as if you are unhappy you can take a straight off.
I agree, oils or chalks. I don't know what I was thinking using acrylics haha! :D

The gunpla I ordered arrived 2 hours ago, and the sprues are soaking in warm soapy water... So yes there'll be a gunpla video up some time next year! :D Do you have any painting tips? Should I paint anything before assembly?
Quick Kits nice! What kit did you get? I usually assemble the whole thing to better plan out my painting scheme. Then I take it apart and paint individual pieces or constituent pieces. Depending on what I have in mind. 👍
Here's one of my builds. The 1/144 HG Barbatos Lupus. Just changed a bit of the color scheme and added some light weathering, although I think I overdid it on the bat. I don't really put rust effects on these things, since mobile suits probably don't rust.

Jonathan Gapay It's an EXIA kit. I've assembled it and now taken it apart to paint - I think I'm just going to paint the skeleton and make it a darker grey, then apply washes and some chipping to the other parts. Thanks for the link to the photos, very inspirational. Yours look amazing!
Quick Kits Cool! What grade is it? Careful when painting the joints, and parts were there's a tight fit between parts. They tend to scrape off the paint.
The paint alone for this model must be at least £100. If you include kit this tank would cost a fortune to build, I understand that you build a paint collect over time if the leftovers are saved but as a beginner it's beyond my reach. Are the photo etched part included in the Tamiya kit?
So, Poly Cement cab glue the rubber tracks?
I think on most of them you can but not Revell and Airfix kits... but I'm not sure
I'm super late but if you read the instructions it should say how to bond the tracks together. :)
Just a quick tip: sag your tracks a bit more. You can get away with it in 1/72 but not in 1/35. Overall not bad at all for your first 1/35 model. Overweathering as some call it can be problematic. The trick is to weather a model in stages i.e. take breaks between each stage so you can step back and evaluate before going bonkers, weather the whole lot in under an hour then start counting casualties.
Ah the Sherman Firefly's tracks didn't have any sag, but on my Panzer IV I could have added a bit, yes :) and it's definitely a good tip to take breaks, like I did this over the course of a week with a day in between things to evaluate them - admittedly I should have taken more breaks haha! :D
You're right about taught tracks. .Here's the catch though: Sherman's tracks are taught but it's beneficial to give the illusion of 'weight' i.e. some form of gravity illusion. Mind you, I'm nitpicking really. Nice build, definately better than the Shermans that I've built in the past.

eh, mabye for washes and the odd bit here now there but enamel or acrylic are ideal for main coats :/

You can't paint a whole model with watercolour, it just won't stick. You need enamel or acrylic modelling paint - save the watercolour for washes like I did :) Hope that helps! :)

Well it's certainly a good choice! I have the M41 Bulldog by Tamiya that's currently my favorite model I've made, they make great kits!

Nice model, its good that You decide to no varnish the model. Often modelers destroy all the hard work with flat coating & ect.

Another problem with watercolours, especially cheap ones, is that many are not lightfast. Some commercial art galleries do not sell watercolour paintings because of this. Sennelier have lightfast colours in their range but they are expensive.
