Interesting list and good points, but please include more gameplay previews or at least the box cover for each game. I had to constantly pause and Alt+Tab to search for those myself.
Hiya! Thanks! We completely agree with you on the B-roll. However, we both have full time jobs and do this completely pro bono so sometimes there just isn't time :(. Particularly in the case this video which fell between birthdays and holidays. In this video we had 12 different games, and just the set up alone would have likely taken multiple hours, not to mention the time taken to film B roll and edit it in. We included all the B roll we could grab and title cards for every game to help identify it, but it obviously wasn't enough based multiple comments, which we're gutted about.
We do usually pull out the games from underneath the table when we do these more informal videos but of course for a list that we’ve kept secret from each other, it doesn’t really work 😅 noted though and we’ll try to see what we can do for next time!
Great content as always! A couple of new items on my shopping list (Polis, Rebellion and 1960 in this case). Found your channel when looking for a no-nonsense review of Oath a couple weeks ago and I've probably consumed hours of it by now. So I figured I'd jot down some more to show my appreciation! The scripting and strcuture is terrific, makes for well-flowing videos full of relevant information. Regardless if a review or a list like this. You guys are great hosts and complement each other really well in perspective, which makes content like this better (banter is good too!). Makes for some of the best of this type on RUclips, in my view. Thank you for taking the time to make and share these videos!
Well, we certainly recommend those! Thanks so much for subscribing, it really means a lot to us, and we're just glad we've been helping you find games. All the best!
Great list and I’m off to the game shop now to get a couple of the recommendations. You should check out the 2-player edition of Agricola. It’s a no-luck, resource-focused euro, but you’re done in 30-40 minutes. Good fun. Can you do a list of recommended games to play with friends who don’t play board games?!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy them! Thanks for the recommendation too. That's also a great video idea, will add it to the list. Got a lot of reviews to get through first though.
Great video as usual. I need to seek out Caper : Europe. A few of my favourite two player only games are. Raptor, Just discovered Paris: The city of lights with the Eiffel expansion (Highly recommended), Hanamikoji, Greedy kingdoms, Just purchased Great Plains. But my all time favourite 2 player game is Crokinole. Looking forward to your next video. Which Whisky will you have on the table for your anniversary video 😉. 🎲🥃🇬🇧
I've heard good things about Paris, maybe I'll check out the SU&SD review! Thanks for the other recommendations too...would love to get a Crokinole board at some point. Well, that will be the only one we have at the moment, Laphroaig ;). Funnily enough I have a better Whiskey bar currently back in England as people keep giving them to me and I can't bring them home!
Nice lists. Glad to see Polis on there, even if I never win as the Athenians. I also really like War Chest, which is an abstract version of Undaunted: Normandy, with coins instead of cards, and no dice rolling.
Great video. Off to find Caper: Europe. Any thoughts on Polis vs.Khora? I know one is 2p only and the other is not, but how do you decide when to choose one or the other? Thanks.
Have you guys played Spirit Island? I know you're not big on co-op games, but I'd still recommend it. It surprised me how much I like it, and it would fit really well in your two player games not specifically made for two players videos.
We have indeed! We like it enough, but I think like you say we just don't gravitate towards picking co ops. What's funny is it gives me (Farrell) the worst AP of any game, and I don't suffer from it usually. We also don't include many coops in those videos just because coops inherently scale well so they usually aren't an issue if you only have 2. Anyway, we have been wanting to get it back to the table recently!
If you have not tried it, I would also recommend Targi. Easily one of my fav 2p only games. Lost cities is very light but a common quick play, as are Jaipur and Conspiracy:Abyss Universe. I haven't played Undaunted yet (I want to) so harder to say for sure, but you might like Memoir 44 also.
Targi is one we have on the list to try or look into, as is Lost Cities! Always wanted to try Memoir 44 too, but not sure if we'd like it as much as Undauted mechanically. Thanks for the great recommendations though!
I would second Ken’s suggestion of Targi, the best modern two player game IMO. Lost Cities is also good, though may be a little light for your tastes. Mr Jack Pocket is excellent, a lot of game in a tiny box. Kahuna is also good. Two relatively new games which are both excellent are Blitzkrieg and Caesar. Thanks for all your work on these videos and don’t get too down with the negative comments. As a suggestion to save you some time, perhaps have the actual game boxes offscreen and just pull them into view while discussing them. Polis and Caper: Europe are a couple I need to check out.
Really great list guys, and channel, thanks. Glad to see there's a few new to me entries here. Caper should be delivered to me this week, looking forward to that even more now. Love Undaunted and Watergate. What would you rate the replay value of Mantis Falls if you have a minute? Thanks again!
We've played Mantis Falls a fair few times and not tired of it yet! One of the great things is that it's a game that develops the more you play as you learn the cards and strategies. Also because it's social deception, the thrill is of the unknown, which is there each game.
Interesting list-I only have twilight struggle. Wondering if you’ve played Mandala, Subastral, schotten totten, unforgiven-the Lincoln trial, Hanamikoji. I think they are mostly lighter and shorter than the games you mentioned- but I especially like Subastral and Mandala.
-combat is better with rebellion expansion - yeah 1960 is better game for me than twilight struggle - i dont like undauted dice + deckbuilding is way too lucky for my taste - summoner wars is always underated for newcomer eye - need polis, mantis fall and curious cargo in my collection wishlisted - i will try caper on tabletopia
Does anyone know the name of the 2 player game played across 3 boards, you have to try and knock your opponents pieces off the board, you only have one piece on each board. Think it is quite new.
It's a scratch map so different colours are for different continents (and another color for un scratched) but it is several years out of date at the moment because of the hassle of taking it out of the frame!
@@BoardOfItReviews Oh, cool! I was trying to figure out why so much of the world was that dun colour; what could Russia, all of Africa, and South America have in common? Why is most, not all, of Canada included? ...but with your answer it makes perfect sense. :)
Haha yes to be fair all of Canada could be scratched off as other countries aren’t broken down into provinces or regions, but Canada is on this map so I’ve kept within the dotted lines when scratching off 😅
I like your ideas but I think your videos are missing B-roll of the games you are talking about. Some shots of the setup and components would go a long way
Thanks! Are you talking about specifically this video? As usually our videos contain lots of B-roll! Unfortunately this is something we can only do in our spare time as a passion project since we both have full time jobs, so setting up and getting B-roll for videos like this where we talking about 10+ games can be rather tough, particularly when you consider how long 12 individual set ups would take let alone the B-roll! We did get an amount of B-roll for this video, but unfortunately we've been abroad plus it was one of our birthdays so we didn't have time to get it all. Thanks for the comment though, and we'll focus on trying to get more for videos like this in the future if it will help :).
@@BoardOfItReviews I also came to comment the same thing about B-roll. I get that it takes a lot of time to set up/edit, and it's perfectly understandable why you choose to exclude it. I think B-roll would make for a better video, or you could even just splice in parts from your review where the game is showing :)
@@Liszka0 Nice to see you again! No we completely agree, but we also did do as you suggested for this video - included B-roll from our reviews for the relevant games :)
@@BoardOfItReviews Yeah I saw it later :) It's just that after I think the first two that didn't have any B-roll, I just immediately treated the video as a short podcast :D
Hi! I'm not sure we follow completely? Giving a complete in depth overview of each game would likely double the length of the video, making it even harder for people to find the time to watch. We also do have B-roll on many of the games (although not all, which we would have preferred, but this week we were abroad so didn't have the time to get new footage for 10+ games 😪)
@@BoardOfItReviews I mean a list of all the games discussed at the end, or showing the name of the games in the time bar during discussion, or showing a photo of a game when discussing. That way I could scroll through it quickly and only focus on games that are potentially interesting to me.
@@marshallq A list of all the games at the end is a great idea and I think we'll likely do that in the future! The issue with showing the names in the time bar is that some people want to go through and be surprised, while others just want to hear about the games they are interested in and nothing else, and it's hard to reconcile the two because to do the latter you spoil the former. We also do have title cards pop up on each of our picks with the title of the game, designer, etc. so you should be able to scan through and see those :).
@@BoardOfItReviews I would also like to second marshall q's comment, I unfortunately don't have the time to watch through all of the video and it would be nice to have a list somewhere, perhaps in the description of the video.
As we've already said, multiple times, we both have full time jobs and do this completely pro bono. We literally don't have a patreon, don't ask for money, and we only have ads because we got big enough that RUclips ran them without our consent. We literally do this to help people find games they love and to interact with the community at the cost of hours and hours of our time. In the case this video fell between birthdays and holidays, and we had 12 different games. Just the set up alone would have likely taken multiple hours, not to mention the time taken to film B roll and edit it in. We included all the B roll we could grab and title cards for every game to help identify it, but it obviously wasn't enough based multiple comments, which we're gutted about. That said, less B-roll than you'd like doesn't mean we're "narcissistic" and it is pretty horrid to use that as an excuse to insult people and tear down their efforts to help others. Feel free to watch any of our reviews, which is our main video type, and are full of B-Roll.
