When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
In this watercolour and ink demonstration I use my normal urban sketching techniques and palette to show you how I paint and sketch people and animals in a simple and effective way. People and animals can be daunting or challenging, but if we break them down with a full simple tricks, tips and hacks you'll soon find you'll be confident and enjoying sketching anyone!
It's only relatively recently that I've started to have the confidence to enjoy this kind of subject - animals and human figures - in my watercolour art, and in my ink urban sketches. And suddenly, when you decide to just go for it a whole world of possibilities opens up. So don't be like me, be brave :)
One of the most important things I always talk about is that everything, no matter how complex, is just a series of shapes! This works for humans, figures, faces, animals, alapacas, EVERYTHING!
Don't get overwhelmed by the details, just break it down and make it simple.
On top of this, if we do a few little measurements, and check on relative proportions or positions of different lines we'll soon have something we can be proud of.
Remember - art isn't supposed to be like a photo (unless, I guess, you want it to be!) so it's doesn't have to be perfect. We just want to have fun, right?

Thank you for this tutorial. It was a great reminder in drawing people or animals to look for the shapes first. Simple stuff but so important to work that out then the rest of the proportions start to fall in to place. 👏👏👏
