The best way to stop them from killing games...is to not buy them. While I agree for the most part, most young people have not been taught what capitalism or "Common Law" is in government schools. You have the right to sell products under the Common Law provided that they don't use force or fraud and fully inform the buyer of dangers that the seller is aware of that a reasonable buyer might not be. Selling you a product under one set of terms, then depriving you of what you just bought, is illegal under civil law. Tragically, we now have 150 federal regulatory agencies creating 185,000 pages (as of 2016) of regulations that people have to contend with, all because most of the public is only vaguely aware of how our civil and criminal courts are supposed to work.

Instead I contacted Konami who explained that I had not purchased a game disc put a software license, and as it was not the software that was defective but the disc, they were not going to send out a replacement.
The Konami representative insisted that it was my right to demand a replacement disc from Game who apparently knew that they had to oblige.

It's happening with Amazon Prime Video also, a movie I purchased was removed from my library and in its place was the option to buy or rent the same movie again, if game publishers don't want gamers owning a digital copy of the games, then they should stop using the words "buy or purchase" as they clearly mean transfer of currency for property ownership. But even if they went that far, I have no intention of ever renting a game or a movie, a lot of my games since PS3 era are digital downloads, but if I really liked the game, I bought it twice so I have a rather large collection of never opened PS3, PS4 and PS5 game discs.

This is why it's so important that people's digital purchases are treated exactly the same as physical copies and why we must force them to use precise language when selling or renting copies to the public. Unfortunately even back when games were all released physically those games came with a page at the back of the manual that stated that what you were buying was a license to play it. A license that they could revoke at their discretion. Of course back then without the consoles being internet connected that would have been difficult if not impossible.
Nowadays though with practically every game needing a patch (or nine) and consoles being internet connected coupled with some games just being the license key on the disc or cart with the rest having to be downloaded it's a more feasible option for them to revoke access now.
The biggest reason for all of this is consumers putting up with the companies tactics. Period.
The best and easiest way to eliminate customer unfriendly tactics is to stop supporting the companies doing it. The biggest obstacle to this are all the consumers who just shrug their shoulders and put up with it.

As someone who works in software/IT industry and aware of some of its history, I'd want to act surprised, but unfortunately I can't. Business models of "leasing" things and services have been the norm in business-to-business tech since the mid 20th century and it was a matter of when, not if, that this made its way into business-to-consumer operations. For better and for worse, the internet greatly accelerated that.

There's a reason that retro emulation portables exploded in popularity as well as collecting retro cartridges and investigating if a game runs offline online before purchasing.
Now a days, many games have little to no data on disc (most of them being made by Ubisoft), making physical copies useless even in the long run. Also games with drm or always-online dependency on a server to even get past the press-start screen that turn discs into bookmarkers or dead data on hard drives. There's also the outrage of consoles themselves depending on servers to even run physical discs that CAN run offline because of the greatest trojan horse in the industry (trophies/achievements). I've been complaining about this ever since consoles became online-capable in the ps3/360 era.

This was always going to happen with online only games. Considering how large displays are nowadays, what's so bad about still having a local multiplayer mode on split screen? Even if servers are turned off, you'd still be able to play it with your family or friends so long as the game doesn't need to log in each time you run it.

    • @gman3901
      @gman3901 3 месяца назад +1

They mostly phased out split screen multiplayer during the era of PS3 and Xbox 360. Online multiplayer took over because it made more money. Local multiplayer requires one TV, one console, one game and enough controllers. Online multiplayer means each player requires their own TV, console, game and online subscription.
They don't want us to have local multiplayer, and gamers supported this decision with their wallets.

I was avid gamer and used to buy new consoles normally day of release. I stopped at PS3 because where I live I cannot recieve fibre/broadband Internet and big data DLC/updates killed it for me, so digital download only doesn't interest me whatsoever. These days why would you first buy a game which is technically unfinished then be expected to pay more for extra content let alone the micro transactions ?
Also I don't believe in buying media unless you get a physical copy (disc or cartridge). This is because if bought a game then completed it/didn't like, I would want to sell or exchange for something else, this you cannot do with digital copy only.
Great vid Lady Decade, your great collection looks more valuable than ever!

If a game is dependent on having a server functioning or whatever, and one day the official servers are going to go down and thus make the game unplayable, I say that publishers should be good sports and allow users to have their netcode and make their own private/unofficial servers so those that CHOOSE to partake can do so for as long as they like. Just throw out the usual legal jargon about doing so at your own risk, etc. and let any Average Joe run his own server out of his home. Of course, I'm sure that wouldn't happen because the publishers have to have their money, but it's saved other games from obscurity, like old-school Phantasy Star Online. Of course PSO still has single player mode, but it's definitely more fun with a group, and there are a lot of dedicated fans with their own private servers. This whole debacle is a slippery slope, but it highlights some really shady practices in the gaming industry...and as someone who grew up as a gamer kid, I feel like it's definitely worth standing up to companies that want us to just accept that titles are vanishing.

I felt a little comfortable buying only single-player games, until Ubisoft removed all the access from Might & Magic X and it's DLC. Thankfully, the backlash made them restore que access, but still, there is no way to prevent this from happening even if you buy physical copies only. After all, the material does decay over time and on more modern consoles they could even block physical mídia with updates, which would always lead to emulation and jailbreaking being, for now, the safest way.

I'm perfectly happy with my older consoles, cartridges, and discs... for as long as they still work.

Im glad there are more people who see things the way I see thing sin gaming. I never liked online only games and service games especially when its a game that requires you to have other people to enjoy it. ALL games of ALL genres should have options and choices for how one wants to enjoy them. All game should have both online and offline functionality and modes to play with like games use to have. And I never liked it when a game stops getting support and then gets shut down after instead ofjust letting us still play the game or I dont, make offline variants of those games if youre going to shut down the online for it so we can at least still play them and let the community find a way to connect via online. And also I cant STAND when they delist games. Thats why I buy ALL of my games physical and thats why I hope that any game I want has a Complete edition of that game so I dont have to worry about any missing DLC/add on content, and game patches missing.

On top of all of what we see here in this grand video, what has been suggested by Mark Kern of Diablo 2 and World of Warcraft fame, AS WELL AS the sailing of the Seven Seas of the net. I think we might want to see if its plausible to perform a class action lawsuit of the entire industry that requires a shift to where whenever a company desires to no longer support a title themselves that has a necessary online component that we're allowed without retribution to set up fan-compiled servers to keep these games alive. Something that could also be a further business opportunity for that company that I don't think they realize they have a capacity to have. I mean they could sell the assets needed to do specifically that.
