In truth since the 1980s the game industry has never REALLY been in trouble. That is to say, every time it’s boxed into a corner... it just evolves and pivots.
Want to know when AAA gaming was REALLY in trouble? Xbox 360/PS3 era. Nothing but RTS, FPS games. Drab, depressing, sepia toned garbage. Unit spawn “strategy” games. Zombie and WWII overload.
Then guess what? Destiny. Overwatch. XCOM REDEFINED what turn-based, strategy, and FPS games could be. The entire industry pivoted. Everyone who grew up with SNES and hated all the FPS and RTS games were suddenly able to play brand new sprite based art like the SNES.
Is the industry in trouble? Not really. Just ready for the next evolution. It happens all the time. No big deal.

A portion of PS5 players simply just want COD, their sports game, Spider Man, MAYBE God of War and definitely GTA. I believe this is a good percentage of (but not all) PS5 owners, and their purchasing choices won’t be swayed as anything they aren’t already familiar with is deemed “lame” or seems weird to them. I only say this due to my real-life interactions with many PS5 owners in the real world.
It’s a little different in your niche gaming hub on the internet where people generally play a variety of things.
I am saying this because I think AAA developers are misjudging the market (once again). They are assuming there is a potential audience of a few extra million that isn’t really there.
I hate to say it but I think developers need to utilize their resources better so they can spend less and still offer interesting and attractive games.

2:59 IMO this is one of the biggest problems with the AAA industry. In the process of collaboration, one of the most useful tools a person has is, somewhat counter-intuively, *argument*. Arguing over creative decisions can be hugely constructive, especially in small teams. This becomes much harder when your team is in the hundreds of people, and basically impossible in the thousands. At that point, DEI makes no difference toward whether diverse voices are heard or not.

If there ever was a time when "think of the children" was valid, it's mega corporations hiring dubious psychologists to create things like worse and worse FOMO addiction. I was lucky as a kid that my mother understood video games since the NES days. I was telling her how things like battle passes work today, and if you buy the pass, and your child doesn't participate every single day on some of them, they're losing value on the purchase.

16:33, they the devs get 6 months to change formerly FIFA now EA 24 every year, and there are bugs going back many, many years even after they have changed the engine to Frostbite, it's still the same buggy AI as before. You are essentially just paying for the kits and transfer updates, they could just make one really good base game and then update it every year via a DLC model or Season Pass, but EA being EA they are greedy and that's why it's been this way since the very beginning from the Megadrive days.

I’ve lived through the entire history of gaming consoles. My gaming collection is quite massive. So many classics and memories.
I get more excited for a re-release or remaster than any AAA game.
I bought a new PC a couple of years ago and was excited to play a couple of new titles from favorite franchises. Once again I use a fully loaded gaming PC for mostly retro gaming.
Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Blizzard, Microsoft, can all suck it!
I don’t want your stupid game passes, your slow launchers, or to pay ridiculous amounts of money for your games that are not even fun.
I still enjoy playing games like Atari Adventure. A block slaying dragons and finding keys to open castles.
I have zero interest in GTA, COD, Minecraft, Sims, Assassins Creed, or any of these crap franchises.

For the longest time I was playing my mega Drive because I wasn’t really interested in modern gaming as much but then I got a PS4 last year to see if I could adapt to modern gaming or rather AAA gaming I tried God of war and I just couldn’t understand the story. It was boring to me. I just couldn’t get into it. It was the same with Gran Turismo sport. It’s just a shame that I never got to try the remake of shadow of the colossus by this point my mind was made up in choosing the Nintendo switch as I realised that AAA gaming just wasn’t for me and that I wanted basically what I was already playing but with quality of life features for modern audiences more importantly I wanted my games to be fun and the big end scratches that it for me anyway to cut long story short there’s a reason why I chose Nintendo over both Microsoft and Sony because of all of what’s going on Nintendo realised the long time ago that the diminishing returns of graphically advanced games along with the high development costs simply wasn’t worth it and Nintendo for saw this Malays with AAA gaming 20 years earlier but my question is everyone knows the poor state of the gaming industry but yet we continue to buy these games. The only way these companies are gonna listen is to stop buying their games and vote with our wallets. Anyway, great video as always, lady D, and I love how you tie to your videos as you know exactly how to hook your audience in already and please keep going with this new direction as I think it’s great because these things need to be said.

retrogaming is definitely also having an effect on sales of modern games. Then again, if modern games were actually still good, we'd be too busy playing the new games to go back to the old ones.
But I do feel I must raise a counterpoint to your remark that modern games are expensive: Nintendo 64 games back in the day would cost $70-80 whereas PS1 games would cost $40-$50. Considering inflation since the 90's, $70 at launch now is NOT that expensive.
That being said, I'm not spending that much on a game unless it's one I'm truly hyped for. (such as Paper Mario Thousand Year Door). I just wait for sales or until I can get it used for cheap. Or, you know, not play it. I'm also going full in on retrogaming once I'm done buying PS4 and Switch games. This is the last gen I'm investing in. They can keep their all-digital future, because I want to own my games. There are more than enough good old games I haven't played to keep me entertained for the rest of my life.

    completely spot on LD!!
the future seems very dark--this stuff isn't going away, isn't going to be fixed. on the contrary, the current model will be doubled down.
it will become increasingly clear to both corporation and consumer that the past of our cherished medium is a threat to its future. i expect a full-scale war on R*MS that makes the current situation look childish. humans have limited gaming hours and they must be monetized.
most of us play these silly things as a brief escape from reality but "photorealism" (and from that, unsustainable economics and all the problems you've outlined here) is pursued without end--and who could've predicted--yet another factor to make every game feel "the same."

gaming companies' staff who politicize every little thing and lash out at gamers for their products being critiqued are also a contributing factor for AAA failures [ and any entertainment in general ] along with access media and game journos. although not a game, "furiosa" is a perfect example. good movie but was mislabeled girl boss and after all the many previous girl boss shows people just got assumed this will be another so no one showed up. same with many titles in the gaming sphere.

The cost of living skyrocketing makes me want to punch a hole in the wall. Shouldn’t that make you angry too? I know it does to me because some places in the world living is unaffordable! It angers me to no end and makes you question who’s setting these precedences. I always thought living is expensive (not everywhere thankfully) because f**k you! I can imagine the population of smaller or more affordable areas rising because of it.
Another thing I want to ask, if video games are able to get away with a $50K or less budget, why can’t indie animation do the same?😢

I remember some 20 years ago when the industry bragged about competing with Hollywood as if it was a good thing, comparing yourself with an industry that's notorious for overspending and unclear accounting practices that led to coining the term "hollywood accounting" was a sign of the times to come. Nowadays failing in a single game can mean closure for a studio.

I've been buying games at $20 and under since 2016 now I rarely buy games at full price now and I've never bought a single game at $70 or higher at launch. The only games I buy at full price are indie games or lower budget games with lower price tags. And F pre order and F always online games and F sports games. They make companies want to make billions every time they release a new game without putting in effort.

herer is a question no one asks
when does anyone have the time to play the high volume of games?
ultimately so many games being released makes the point there is not enough time and its really delusional if you think you have a future without flopping cause ultimately games are games they are not life

There are thousands of unique indie games that just don't sell well.
If you want to make creative games, you can't really make them triple A with massive budgets.
You have to make lots of smaller games & hope that a few of them are hits.

I still play sf5 because at least i can play most of my favorite characters on it and easy to navigate the menus. Sf6 is pain in the ass my kids created an avatar on my account that is embarrassing to look at and capcom wont even fix that for me they said i have to play and earn the credit thing to make the changes wtf i never ever been this disapoint in a game purchase before and from a franchise i love. If companies could only give triple a service to the customers of triple a games maybe people would buy more of their products.

I gave Fortnite a try after Harmonix developed a music game into it. It also installed the BR so I gave it a chance. The zero build battle royale game is surprisingly good. It actually plays well, is fun with friends and the… ladies actually look great lmao.
The microtransactions are cosmetic and you can unlock them by playing. The most surprising part was that the ”battle pass” system isn’t linear like it is in all other service games. You collect stars from playing matches, and spend those on a catalogue which opens up as you play the game. You can pretty much just open that catalogue, and unlock what you want. I’m pretty the free pass gives you 500 coins per season (10 weeks) and you need 900 for a paid catalogue. The paid one contains 1500 IIRC, so you can get most of the content for free without a ton of FOMO. You do go through it fairly quickly if you like the game. And if you don’t…. Why are you even playing???
The game’s obviously not perfect, but it’s surprisingly good. Especially the Zero build mode without all the adhd building which turned us older fps players away from the game back when it was released.

The gaming industries greed has caused me to spend far less.
When games cost £35-40 I bought all my games new & full price.
Now they demand £60-70 I always wait until they come much cheaper. I buy all my games for £20-30, and I'm far more likely to buy used.
I'm now just used to waiting to buy new games.
Indie games get bought new, the AAA games go on a list to buy when on sale.

There's a really interesting business book called Blue Ocean Strategy. It discusses ways to be innovative and swim in a blue ocean. This is in contrast to a red bloody ocean where all competitors are doing the same in an effort to get a piece of that pie. I think this explains the AAA industry well. They're all trying to build live service games instead of being innovative and actually creating compelling experiences.

  • @SIlverbullet108

I think in the end, many of the AAA industry problems come from having so many executives that don't give a shit about games or even despise them and are only here to make quick big bucks. In the end, making games is sustainable but what is not sustainable is expecting shareholders to get their quarterly profit increase forever. I agree we're probably looking at big reset in the form of a gigantic crash of AAA games in coming years.

Prescient commentary. My most enjoyeed games after Tears have been classics and Indie; as that's its own genre now. The MSM has utterly lost all credibality. Native ads, all that blarsh. Like you said, we want a fantasy, not necessarily DEI and representation. The people who made the industry what it is are now being marginalized, cause we're getting older. The Industry knows there are more people who have known nothing but what the Game Industry is now than what it used to be. You will own nothing and like it! And there are people who actually defend this idea. I get games are more complex; that said, the teams are huge now compared to teams of 10 to 15, but you bought a piece of property you own and there weren't revisions generally speaking.

There really wasn't that much innovation during the 8 and 16 bit eras. There were so many games that were just reskins of other / previous games. Look at the capcom's horizontal scrolling beat em up arcades. A lot of companies also copied ideas from others and made more or less the same game on a different engine with new characters/models.
