Sega was so young before it's console died. It would be cool to see Sega make a comeback and one day we could see a Modern Sega console. It may be far-fetched but it would be cool.
I would like to see a Sega console comeback but they've been out of the market so long that they would need to redevelop again from the ground up and introduce developers to a whole new development environment. I guess it would be too expensive for a gamble.
Sega can't afford to compete in console hardware.
Xbox obviously has the backing of a trillion dollar company. Sony and Nintendo are both much, much, much bigger tha Sega now.
It costs hundreds of millions (if not over a billion) dollars to r&d, market, launch and support a console nowadays. Back in 1994, Sony put $200M in marketing behind the PS1.

@@fattiger6957 I think Microsoft you should have bought Sega instead of bought Activision Blizzard really. Microsoft could have invested in Sega just as they invest in Xbox although then again they don't really invest in Xbox, invest more in Windows PC Games Studios. Although it would be interesting to see if Microsoft could grow Sega into a beast if they had their own console again.

Sega is pretty much a mid-level publisher now. Even Bethesda was bigger when Xbox bought it.

This so screams Neptunia game reference. I love it because it just shows how that game series is somewhat accurate while they make fun of the gaming industry.
I fell for that april fool's joke and I distinctly remember the dark helmet "FOOL YOUUUUUUU!" voice clip played when I went to the website. XD

Neptune concept came out too late. Had it came out in 92 or 93 with no release of the sega cd as a high end cart console competing against the neo geo. It would've worked and better. Also, sega can used its hardware on a standalone sega cd or cdx like duo console.
It would've increase revenue in their struggling japanese market. Also, give enough time to developement a better performing sega saturn hardware releasing a year later or two.

Yes, definitely instead of being an add-on for the Genesis and no Saturn on the way, the games on 32xCD could've been a great challenge to compete against PS1
If only Sega of America and Sega of Japan had had a unified vision, they could've made the 32X/Neptune successful as the budget option for the 32-bit/64-bit era. The Saturn could have come a few years later in a different, more powerful form (probably something akin to the Dreamcast). For me, the incredibly solid 32X port of Virtua Fighter is evidence enough that the 32X could have worked really well with developers who were dedicated enough to making it work -- similar to what we've seen with "impossible" ports like Doom Eternal on the Nintendo Switch.

Ah yes, the Neptune... what would have been, and SHOULD have been, what we got as the 32X. Although... Genesis 32X? I mean, while not inaccurate, I'd have an issue with the name.
I love everything you do. The Neptune was a system I SO badly wanted! Such a shame it never came out b
It could've been an incredible budget option for the 32-bit/64-bit era, and it would have given consumers sensible options. Already have a Genesis? Buy a 32X. Don't have a Genesis? Buy a Neptune to get a Genesis and 32X in one. People who already had a Genesis would have a cheap next-gen upgrade, and people who had never owned a Genesis would have a next-gen console PLUS instant access to the entire library of Genesis games.

@@deepblue8143 not that i wasn't a fan, or that i think she should limit herself to a finite subgenre, that being said, there is something nice about going back to ones roots, i don't really dislike any of her content, but for some reason, learning about the consoles i miss, is very satisfying.

I wanted the Neptune for the same reason I got both versions of the Sega CD and Virtual Boy a bit after they came down from Launch Price, my love for electronics and a piece of history. Never got it though since my family trashed all the games and consoles I had while I was deployed through the ARMY in South Korea and never got back into collecting. My inner child fawns at the background display of console goodness
Man the Sega Neptune would have been a much smarter release for Sega, then release a 32x type device later as their "budget upgrade". What if?

@@CalebByRamen dunno guess if there was no major hiccup they'd partner/merge with Microsoft and it would be Sega Sony and Nintendo down the road? Dreamcast was a forward thinking console for it's time.
Really cool vid! There is a video from Macho Nacho Productions, where he builds this console, he 3d printed all the parts, it looks awesome!
On the plus side, if someone's intrepid enough and willing to put both a 32X and a Genesis at risk one can get a third-party Neptune shell and parts kit from certain sources (IIRC it's 3D printed rather than injection molded, but supposedly really high quality) and convert the pair into a singular Neptune. Macho Nacho Productions and Long Island Retro Gaming, among others, have videos showing their experiences doing the process.

It would have been awesome if the Sega Neptune (aka Sega Genesis/Sega Genesis 32X 2-in-1/Sega Mega Drive/Sega Mega 32X 2-in-1) was not canceled. It would have been awesome to get the Sega Neptune instead of the Sega Genesis 32X/Sega Mega 32X add-on for the Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive.
Even if it's not a real device it's good for reminiscing of those days when we were young.

Sega Nomad was a handheld that actually played regular sized Sega Genesis games. Battery life was like 45 minutes lol.
Sega can finally release the Neptune in Mini form- 20-25 more Genesis games, 10-15 32X games & 5-10 more Sega CD games. All of us geeky old gamers would love it & pay decent $ for it. That'll warm us up to the Saturn & DC Minis. If Sega had not released the add-on 32X & had gone with the Neptune from the start (backward compatibility, only 1 set of cords needed & it looked really cool), I think their presence in the hardware market would've lasted at least a few years longer

Neptune could only have worked if it was priced comparable to the eventual Genesis 3, as a budget option. Admittedly it would have avoided the cabling nightmare of connecting a 32x to a Genesis

The criminally underused Sega CD "PlayStation 0" graphics chip was what really marked the end of the arcade giant in the console business. The constantly changing confusing roadmap, just pissed off developers, casual gamers, retailers, small game sellers, the gaming press and gaming enthusiasts. I remember people asking why. We should pay a $160 for an add. On they couldn't do much that the existing CD-ROM couldn't. We would later see that the game's on the 32X were mostly terrible rushed affairs. After 3 years on the market, Sega hadn't run a single commercial, showing off the dozen or so games that actually used the ASIC-DSP for scaling, rotation, warping, nor 3D. Those of us who'd been promoting Sega. For years we're now mocked and ridiculed. Forgetting scammed by the company. 90% of people insisted that the $300 albatross could only play grainy FMV "games."
Just imagine how many amazing games could have been made for the CD had SEGA put those 32X resources into pushing that hardware.

Sega 32x was a good concept on paper but in execution not so much
I never realized the Neptunia games were based on a real thing.
I think that the Neptune could have actually worked as a stop gap between the Genesis and the Saturn.
This is assuming that they didn't release the 32X or SegaCD and also delayed the Saturn launch
...And another very interesting video on a strange console.
Its worth remembering with the 3DO is the structure in that platform worked (multiple hardware developers who may or may not be releasing software) that the sales price had to be high. Sony/Microsoft/Sega/Nintendo et al know if they sell you a console they will make money selling you software so they can reduce their margin on the hardware (or even sell at a loss if neccessary). 3DO hardware developers didn't have that luxury.
So I don't think its a fair comparison point to use.
Sega in the 90s reminds me of Commodore in the 90s.. Excellent hardware. Excellent software. Awful managment.
Note: I am not saying that all the managers in either company are crap. David Pleasance and the Commodore UK management appeared to be decent managers. As did the management at Sega USA, but those in charge of them didn't appear to know what they were doing.
Commodore international just couldn't do marketing, so their products didn't do as well against the competition as in the UK. As for Sega, what the hell were they thinking? The Saturn and 32X were released at almost the same time, into largely the same market. Sega were competing against themselves.. This is never good for a company.
I'm still kinda salty, that it never released. It was an awesome looking console. 32X wise... Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, and Doom... Those are pretty good conversions. Not much else, was good, for the 32X. The 32X cartridges are pretty damn cool looking, too.

In a parallel universe Sega not Nintendo became top dog. Honestly if not for the piracy issue on the Dreamcast, Sega would’ve won that console war and would possibly still be making consoles to this day.

Not really lol. Nintendo spends the most on R&D. Since they’ve gone the safe route, their decisions have been much smarter.

The Sega CD was horribly mismanaged. With the sprite scaler capabilities, why no Super Scaler games? I guess in that timeline we also all bought FM Town Martys and Microsoft bought Nintendo, so maybe we should be thankful for how everything shook out.

Saturn RE 1 Was AMAZING just when I needed it. A world that we didn't have 70s 80s were JAPANESE GARBAGE and then American garbage They got rich and my generation got ripped off but I got a saturn CHEAP and all CD and found RE for $10 in the middle of the night and the middle of ATLANTA SOUTHside old railway area. But it was worth seeing the original railway area SOBER
