I will always answer this question... yes I enjoy your channel
I love my Saturn. I still play it quite a bit. I did want to see more from the Pluto. It looked pretty good.
Yeah
Could you review the phantom.
@@zasandfan1922 that is a very good , playformer much like X-men 2 SEGA and SNES.
This lady is incredible, her journalistic capabilities especially, not to mention her editing, voice over and the speed at which she pumps this stuff out. Impressive stuff
Thought I'd heard everything about the Dreamcast saga, but had no idea that Sega and EA had both jumped in with 3dfx - gives EA's choice to not to support the Dreamcast a really fascinating backdrop.
I have the schematics for the 3dfx version - a friend worked for Sega Europe and when 3rd parry cleared out, the boss opened the cabinets, let them take pretty much whatever they wanted -cue my friend grabbing random bits, envelopes etc. When we got the 8 bin bags of stuff home, we opened one of the envelopes and it was the schematics for the 3dfx version. He’s in China and I have all his gear in storage so I probably need to go and scan all this in as he’s not coming back
Can you Release this Scans on the NeoGaf Forum?
How is this going?
I haven't heard from him in 2 years and his SM accounts haven't been touched in that time, so it's more a missing persons thing right now. @@MaxAbramson3
Sega management from the mid 90s onwards was a complete train wreck.. They dug thier own grave as far as im concerned. What a waste
they were competing with themselves, sega usa vs sega japan.
@@channelofstuff6662 As a Japanese company founded by an American, they were always doomed to have this identity crisis. It’s a damn shame that management couldn’t keep the internal competition in check, like a great basketball coach. Because they employed some of the best talent in the history of the industry during the 80s and 90s.
SEGA of Japan. SEGA of America had great management that was overridden by SoJ from 1994 on. That's when I left as a customer.
Wow. No wonder they stopped making consoles. Two competing hardware development teams would have worked out fine, if they had compared notes and combined the best features of both concepts.
SEGA dug its own grave with that nonsense
You all took the words right out of my mouth. Too bad SEGA didn't learn their lesson from simultsneously working on the 32x and Saturn...
Imagine producing the megadrive, the megajet, the mega cd, the nomad, the gamegear, master system, the multiemega, the 32x and the Saturn all at the same time in overlapping intervals at a time when their sales are dropping
SEGA back in those days was like Schizophrenia. I certainly don't mean to put anyone under any kind of notion of stereotyping in anyway, but Sega Japan's and Sega America's "Split"(Schizo) sense on how Sega(the "mind"(phrenia)) as a whole should move forward really did damage amongst their brand(mental stability). Which created a split minded effect on the stability of their company(the body of Sega). And now, they're a shadow of their former self(catatonia).
Sorry if what I'm saying may be a bit on the complicated side of explaining things. I admittedly have a tendency to use different ways of explaining certain subjects using different diminutives, logic, and other stuff to try make things well.......interesting.
Lol armchair engineering at its finest.
You know, semi-unrelated but with all the in-fighting and self-sabotage between SEGA Japan and America on basically everything, it's honestly a miracle the Genesis did as well as it did in hindsight.
And Sega of Japan resented the NA branch because of it.
Imagine if Sega did not flood the market with 32x and cd add ons in the states. What if the Dreamcast would of succeeded instead of becoming the Xbox.
Imagine being that kid that was constantly compared to the more successful sibling. That's Sega Japan. And instead of looking for ways they could do better Sega Japan resented Sega America.
The Saturn did better than Genesis...
in Japan.
Sometimes greatness can't be contained by human imperfection
The research, story and info is exceptional on this channel. Learning alot!
Western companies had a big standing investment in 3Dfx hardware, both for PCs and arcade applications. A major portion of the Dreamcast's launch and first year arcade ports from Midway were created on 3Dfx based systems. Not being able to carry over low level code was a huge setback. The use of Windows CE to ease porting of PC games that used the DirectX APIs helped a bit but was little comfort to companies invested in 3Dfx's own GLide API.
Should have just used Vulkan ;)
Man these videos are always amazing and learning about these other consoles are interesting because I only knew of the main ones such as the Genesis, Mega Drive, and Saturn. This Black Belt was truly something I never heard of!
sega was so busy competing with itself it forgot the rest of the industry
It would’ve been interesting to see what the Blackbelt was capable of and how it ran compared to the Dreamcast.
you could just throw a voodoo 1 into a windows 95 with a 233mhz pentium computer and see for yourself lol.but in reality since I own a powerVR gpu and a voodoo 1 the voodoo 1 is hands down more powerful.I would pay a good chunk of money for a black belt dev kit if it could run the normal dreamcast games
Sega made the right choice for the Dreamcast, it came the next gen Arcade system and was so much more advance then there system 3, which think the Black Belt was aiming for. Sony's high advertising and stunt campaigns, which Sega could not afford, was Sega downfall. 😭 Long live the Dreamcast ❤️
@@KJW648 the vr chip it uses is actually much less powerful then a voodoo chip.I own both of these cards for the pc and the console would have been much more capable with a 3dfx chip
@@kyles8524 We will never know. We do not know which chip was into the console. We do not know if it was really the pc chip or maybe just custom chip much weaker than their pc counter part. Hardwise there was nothing wrong with the Dreamcast. The marketing was the problem and the over hype from the Sony side of things concerning the ps2.
@@kyles8524 The 3dfx early chips was basic and only covert 3d graphics, not like there voodoo cards which was a full graphics card. 3dfx also announced that they where development for Sega, even though they where told to keep it silent, this pissed off Sega big time. I own both on pc and worked on arcade machines. Great to have first 3d graphics card chips, but there graphics where " soft ", VR was sharp and detail, then the days of Nvidia 👍 who bought 3dfx and dumped them straight away, only keeping "SLI" .
Awesome video! I learned a lot!
As always stellar content. Bravo Lady Decade.
wish sega would make another console, dreamcast will always be 1 of my favourite systems so ahead of its time and the software was optimised, unlike the Saturn which lets face it was a massive no2 only knew 1 guy that owned it
I bought one second hand solely to play Saturn Bomberman, which is basically the only decent game that system had to itself. Lol.
I owned a Sega Saturn and it was brilliant.
@@dannywholuv What are the best games? I found about half a dozen good ones it's a very small library.
I do like the hardware though, has a cool feel and look to it except that stupid memory card.
I mean that plain sucks lol but the console and the gamepad are fairly nice. Saturn Bomberman is literally the one I Play :D
@@DailyCorvid Street Fighter Alpha 2's best port was on Saturn... really though, the Saturn's 2D fighters were all best in class, but since the PSX could play ports that were good enough and many devs were willing to experiment with 3d games, it was an easy choice for anyone who played other types of games. The PSX library was way better than the Saturn in general, at least if you didn't speak Japanese.
@@DailyCorvid Legend of Oasis, Panzer Dragoon series, Dragonforce series, Shining Force 3, Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx, Guardian Heroes, Albert Odyssey, Shining the Holy Ark, Dark Savior, Three Dirty Dwarves, Die Hard Arcade, Capcom's arcade ports like Dungeons and Dragons and Xmen Vs Streetfighter, Nights into Dreams, Astal, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Lots of Shmups and 2D fighters especially if you get into the imports and other imports like PuLiRuLa, Princess Crown, Warriors of Fate, Nekketsu Oyako (clearly inspired by streets of rage), Waku Waku 7. Also prob my favorite version of Earthworm Jim 2 (having the cd soundtrack and the sega saturn controller) but every version basically plays the same. Soviet Strike, Herc's Adventure and Warcraft II got a lot of play for me but also on other systems. Some people like Shinobi Legions for it, but I think it's hot garbage and plays like crap personally. I mean, you may not like any of those games listed either though lol. Everyone's got their favorite genres and most will agree that if you like Shmups and 2D fighters, Sega Saturn had a lot.
Very cool channel! Lady Decade is my new fave creator!
You're awesome thanks for being very informative 😊
If anyone from the west has ever lived in Japan. I mean not a holiday actually lived there and with what we know on the Nissan Renault scandle and how the Japanese authoritys handles that you wouldn't be a Sony or playstation fanboy.
Not arguing with you, just curious what you mean by that?
I am very interested.
You are amazing. Thank you for this channel.
If the Dreamcast included a DVD player it would've competed with the PS2. Similar to the Genisis and Super Nintendo. Because It had some great games.
Yeah that underpriced DVD player that was the PS2 definitely destroyed all the competition. Even though the Gamecube was more powerful they too screwed themselves by not just using a regular DVD. Liked the PS2 but even compared to the weaker Dreamcast it's visuals were just awful and muddy looking. Shit even the Code Veronica port to PS2 looked worse then on Dreamcast.
A controller with a second joystick too.
In the Beginning that's all PS2 was good for! But Dreamcast ran into Bottle a Neck of sorts! GD Rom vs DVD Storage for Games was a Massive disadvantage in the Long Run for Sega! Example Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City for Example! How Many GD Rom's would have made up those games? One of My favorites on DC (D2) takes up Four!
@@dustineffler7658 Xbox 360 can compete with Playstation 3 with Dual Layer DVD only , so it was possible for Dreamcast with GD-ROM to compete with Playstation 2.
They needed to wait one more year which is what Sony was doing in order for the manufacturing costs of DVD to come down enough to make it viable but the Saturn was bleeding too much money for Sega to wait not to mention that 10 million lawsuit payout
The Saturn was the best selling in Japan and thanks to that, we get 1107 games and even with the n64 the Saturn was in front of Nintendo in Japan ( more sold consoles). I know, many thinks that I am blind and love too much the 32 bits but for sure numbers don’t lies and we get some of the best rpg, shmup and fighting games on the Saturn, the Dreamcast wasn’t the same success in Japan and we get only a few ( but amazing) rpg.
Last but not least, shenmue that was on development for the Saturn was build for the stock Saturn without any add on enhancement.
I remember the black belt in early 1997 in French magazine, great memories
I like the Saturn better than dreamcast
The Saturn's tenure as the bestselling console in Japan was very short lived and driven almost entirely by Virtua Fighter. Sony was very smart about understanding the inventory problems of the Mom & Pop stores that then dominated the Japanese game market and offered them the ability to place orders weekly for fulfillment the following week. This was a huge improvement to their stock management and being able to react quickly to hits and turkeys among new releases. Although Sega had been using optical media for a while, they hadn't really overcome the mentality formed during over a decade of mask ROM products that required orders to be made months in advance. That could put shops in a precarious position if they over or under ordered a title, as their next order would be fulfilled until after the game had faded from hit status or was universally known to be bad.
Optical media cost no more for small orders than large orders and a production line could quickly change the files and image being placed on the discs. Mask ROM manufacturing is extremely lethargic by comparison. Thus Sony big win for the Playstation wasn't just in the content but in offering the retailers a better way to do businesses and thus lead them to recommend Playstation to their customers. A few years later everybody understood the full implications of optical media but in the mid-90s it required a new way of thinking about game manufacturing and distribution to fully exploit.
@@epobirs Best Selling 'Sega' console in Japan.
Awesome contents!
I'm not sad at all we didn't get the blackbelt. The dreamcast was and still is I consider one of the best consoles ever
Same, love the PowerVR2 and it was ahead of its time, however, by working with 3dfx with no intention of actually using their GPU and political maneuvering to keep competitors from working with them, Sega soured a ton of western developers. They should not have led 3dfx on in the first place.
@@madhatter8508 Sounds a bit like 3DFX signed a crappy contract tbh.
Yes it is I'm glad Sega Dreamcast was my first game console in 1999.
@@haraldhimmel5687 Sounds a bit like Sega lied to and defrauded them, which is why Sega had to pay out tens of millions of dollars in a court settlement and the Dreamcast fell flat on its face after gamers watched Sega screw yet another party who had misplaced faith in them. Everybody who saw the 3dfx deal fall apart knew exactly how 3dfx felt because we felt it with the Sega CD, the 32X and the Saturn
@@theshield1613 was amazing think i had it before ps2 n xbox was first time playing online on a game console

I had a Sega Saturn. It was awesome. Being able to play some great arcade titles at home.
Thanks. Loving the videos as a retro gamer. Keep up the good work :-) PS, what's that music from at the end, it's driving me nuts as I know it, but cannot place it!
Loved the Saturn. The summer of SEGA 06, Sega rally, Daytona, pandamonium, Ikaruga and zero gunner!🕹️👍
Same same same.
House of the dead! What a game!
All playable on series X aka the Dreamcast 5
Saturn Bomberman is literally, the only exclusive game that system ever had but they didn't make the most of it. That alone could have been a system seller. Too busy measuring dicks with the Japanese!! Lol. Clear who wins that battle.
Typical though Sega are absolutely clueless when it comes to business, and did the same thing to the Dreamcast - which is a shame because the hardware was pretty cool. But how did they encourage sales of this amazing new console?
By rushing it out the door £100 overpriced with barely any games, and even less good ones. What wasted potential. To be fair though, Sega never made great consoles they always played the "other guy" in gaming. No ambition., the opposite of ALL the other players even Nintendo.
And Nintendo are the WORST.
PowerVR Kyro with it's tiles rendering technic was far superior than the 3Dfx muscles and could stand longer in the 3D competition that was at this time. Plus the colors of 3Dfx were a bit off compaired to the vivid colors of a PowerVR. PowerVR Kyro technologies still lives today in 3D acceleration of most smartphones thanks to the MALI graphics. 3Dfx technology has been bought by Nvidia and was finaly used in the "Dreamcast 2" that Sega was preparing with Microsoft: the Xbox 1.

What is funny is that each time in the video it is mentionned that 3dfx was at this time a leader in 3d on PC we see footage of Duke nukem 3D which never used 3dfx technology to run on PC 😅

Your voice reminds me of BITS on Channel four in the early 2000's. Thanks for this channel.
I heard about Katana and Blackbelt but they were only codenames for the Saturn and Dreamcast or something. You explained it.
neither Katana nor Blackbelt were codenames for Saturn, both were codenames for Hardware that was considered for the Dreamcast. Katana won because 3DFX blabbed to the public about Blackbelt which broke their NDA with SEGA

Just found your channel. Love the one on Sega. They are sitting on a gold mine of game that should be on every piece of hardware there is. So many cool arcade games need a remaster. And I bet they would fly off the shelves
Hi Lady D!! Loving your content!! So glad I found you!! 💜
How many damn consoles did that company try to make?!
Thats exactly what happened,3dfx announced it was going to be in the upcoming sega console and leaked details about it and it pissed Sega off so they went with PowerVR.I actually read this in a magazine, one was the details in a 3dfx magazine and the magazine that always came with demo discs for the pc i forget what its called had the article about it going with a powerVR chip
The back of the Saturn had a port for the VCD that already had an unreleased accelerator card developed for VF3. Considering the power of the PowerPC at that time and the 3 million polygons per second that the voodoo card was capable of rendering, such a piece of kit could have used the ram, controllers, CD-ROM, and power supply of the Saturn and gotten them to market two years sooner with Dreamcast performance. What's more, SEGA wouldn't have lost the Saturn in the japanese market.
my favorite: Dreamcast /ps1/ps2/gamecube/snes
Even if the Black Belt wouldn't have performed as well as the Dreamcast; Having developer support is extremely important for a console's success. I would bet that if we got the 'Black Belt' console instead of DC, that Sega's console market would've lasted a lot longer than it did. Possibly even could still be present today.
IDK sometimes prototypes dont make it for a reason. The Dreamcast was a fine console with a decent lineup and got pretty much killed by Segas constant mismanagement. 3DFX was a big number in the late 90s but pretty much died shortly after, so who knows how big the gap really was. I kind of doubt they didn't even bother to compare their consoles. The infuriating part IMHO is that they wasted all those resources on a separate console just to kill it off.
Well Sega wouild have at least 10 million more in their pocket that they didnt need to pay out via lawsuit
It's handy that fellow RUclipsrs put videos like this together. I remember I use to use search engines to look up history on video games by putting bits of information together from countless online forums and small websites I'm sure died out a long time ago : )

My understanding is that EA would not develop for the DC if they were putting out sports games.
Kind of curious if Microsoft hired away many of the former Black Belt development team after they left Sega. The timing of the Black Belt's demise coincides pretty closely with the development of Xbox.
MS originally approached Sega to use their namesake to market the Xbox. Both companies were very close at the time. This is evident in the DC having Windows CE.
Dreamcast had a fairly robust web browser for the time. And, after Sega went exclusively third-party they continued the partnership with MS by releasing Panzer Dragoon
Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, Shenmue 2, Crazy Taxi 3, Toejam & Earl 3, GunValkyrie and more.
Xbox was actually developed around use of Microsofts DX10 graphics API, hence the term X in the name (Direct X box). Microsoft just licenced out all the games, same with Nintendo when they bought Rare. Good move MS.

I can’t express how insane it was to walk into a store and see a Saturn just SITTING there for sale with no warning. It was baffling. I
So, here on YT there is a video where the Power VR2 is directly compared to Voodoo 2. As it's been a long time since I watched I can't direct people to it, but I remember the results perfectly, the Power VR2 comes closer to Voodoo 3 in terms of raw performance. The bottom line is that yes, the Dreamcast was the right choice in terms of hardware, but perhaps the wrong choice in terms of consequences.
Black Belt would almost certainly have been based on Voodoo 3. It was a shipping product for PCs in early 1999, before the Dreamcast would have gone to manufacturing. Voodoo 2 would have been suitable for early dev kits but it's unlikely Sega would have used the dual chip arrangement required in the shipping console after the debacle of the Saturn's design.
@@epobirs The Dreamcast was released in late 98 in Japan. Meaning it probably went into mass production in mid-98 and had already at least working prototypes in early 98.
I believe that hardware specs aren't as important as software library, and I have a hard time picturing the demise of Sega's hardware division if PC games could have been easily be ported over to their new system, especially considering that the US president was hell-bent on shipping a console equipped for online gaming.
Great video as usual, please try to mention in this series of cancelled projects whether a prototype is known to exist with any collector :)
Good video, I thought I knew the Sega story, but clearly there was a lot more to it!
