Our society would be so much healthier without social media.
Our world would be so much better without addictive drugs and alcohol, ice cream, cholesterol, trans-fats, and lack of exercise. We all know how to limit our intakes of those things to maintain healthy lifestyles. However, when it comes to limiting internet access, including social media, our inhibitions go out the window.
We shouldn't punish people who use Social Media in healthy amounts by taking it away, just as we don't punish people who enjoy fast food once in a while by banning fast food restaurants.
The problem isn't social media, it's our societies lack of self control and discipline.

I had not seen her on 60 minutes, and only caught the last 1/2 of hearing. Her spontaneous articulate answers impressed me at first, kinda reminded me of ACBs answers during Supreme Court confirmation hearings. After spending more time with the whole deal, it seems she only has 3-4 different well practiced answers to the same 3-4 obvious scripted questions, and too many recommendations for what congress needs to do. Unless she turns up on some long form, unscripted forums answering tough questions about her background, and how this all came to be, I will withhold judgement on her merits.
High time parents raise their children and get them off and out of this toxic environment!

I am a therapist and to this day I don’t know 1 boy with eating disorder when it comes to anorexia & bulimia. Boys have a compulsive disorder such as drinking too much coke, over eating (because in the U.S. large plates are used at home and in restaurants.

this was one of the best hearings i ever sat through. it was so refreshing hearing a compassionate well spoken person talk about how facebook has become and insufferable monster and it needs to change. it was also so refreshing hearing politicians from all sides put their agendas to the side and come together and want to try to tackle this problem. i can't believe i actually sided with ted cruz but here i am.. what a wild ride its been the last few days with this subject.

There’s an eye-opening documentary on Netflix called “The Social Dilemma”. The best part about it is that it features industry insiders: software developers who were developing a guilty conscience because they knew what their algorithms were doing to harm teenagers, cause political division, and weaken Democracy.

8 years ago from now, two of my family members got into an argument on facebook about some political debate and they literally turned against each other and seperated our family to half. Still today we don't see each other and talk that often it makes me sad because i used to spend time with some of them. Those big forces try to divide us and we should be aware of this situation that all social media including here, RUclips, is toxic. We should either learn to pick content what's healing and positive to our life or limit our usage if we cannot close all our socials.

Frances Haugen was Product Manager on Google's Civic Misinformation Team. This unit supposedly dealt with issues related to democracy and misinformation. She also later worked on something she refers to as 'counter-espionage'.
Haugen is clearly much more than only an employee with a conscience who just wants to help children and young people.
Yea she is a democratic operative. The point of all this is to create a government agency that gets control over social media so they can censor anything and anyone they want at anytime. She basically said it.

I like watching hearings on CSpan…I used to like Washington Journal. I enjoyed when they read the daily headlines and aired interesting interviews. I stopped watching it though bc I got so tired of hearing all the call ins. I just got tired of hearing all the mini partisan rants about the same, tired, topics.
Hello, I’m doing a project (actually this project is for cspan) on whistleblowers and I have a question. Was Frances Haugen not charged with anything because there’s nothing to be charged with, or did she get protected by a law? I can’t find anything on it so I now have to ask.
Anyone here feels she is being praised for doing the same thing Snowden did and is still being persecuted for?
I thought the exact same thing when Blumenthal praised her for hopefully empowering other whistleblowers in the tech world to come forward.
But they're going to use this to whip up the public into a frenzy about how the government needs to have power over facebook. Then while the government is trying to figure out how to rollback the negative impact to the kids, they will also be able to determine what is misinformation and control the narrative on one of the major platforms that has "allowed" misinformation to be spread about any number of topics. They will also be allowed to see all activities of the Facebook users: posts, messages, comments, pages visited, videos viewed, apps linked to facebook account and data that is tracked. But they'll probably stay within the bounds of what was initially intended like they usually do..... Snowden detracted from their power, she's giving them a platform to expand it.

She isn't trying to censure anything. Facebook itself censures by not showing us posts in favor of the posts that will go more viral. Her idea is to let our feeds be based on time, not Facebook's manipulative algorithms. So the posts come into our feed based on who posted first. I like that idea better.

No one wants to talk about the elephant in the room, which is the fact that Facebook and other corporations do unethical things because they are required to provide ever-increasing stock prices to their shareholders - and they must do that quarterly. If we really want change, the requirement for quarterly reporting should be changed to annual reporting, and we should eliminate day trading. That would force investors to evaluate the long-term viability of a company before investing, and it would give companies some breathing room to make structural changes when needed. I’m by no means letting Facebook off the hook, but the fact is that they aren’t able to make the structural changes this woman is talking about without temporarily affecting their stock price, which would cause many investors to dump their stock. We also need to limit the amount of stock options executives can receive - they should work for a salary just like the rest of us. CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos behave unethically because they are motivated only by the stock price of their companies - so they do whatever is necessary to keep the stock price high no matter how unethical it is. THAT’S THE TRUTH NO ONE WILL TALK ABOUT.
Facebook issue is not just an issue concerning Americans, it concerns everyone, globally. Obviously, Facebook’s market is waaay healthier outside US.

I do wish that the dialogue had focused more upon the life-threatening dangers of the entire eating-disorder complex, potentiated by social-media platforms, not just anorexia. Binge-eating, with subsequently abrupt fasting. Bulemia. Hydration derangements involving beverages of high caffeine content, advertised on the self-same platforms. I am often horrified by what I see youngsters buying at the corner store near me.

It’s the right time now for US to put a new policy on social media’s platforms. America live forever.
Having written algorithms myself and a long time programmer.. None of these algorithms and manipulation is necessary. If we want a better "user-experience", and targeted advertising, we can do that ourselves. It would be easy to have our own software tool on our own device,, privacy protected (BY LAW). Monitor our own activities into a edit-able file. We then have a question and answer on our file / software, so that we can choose what we are actually interested in buying, and hone our own shopping / personality profile. Websites wanting this data, can auto-request, and we can enable or disable our submission of our own file. This will actually create better profiles. (Currently, I almost never get targeted ads that are relevant to my lifestyle or buying preferences, they are usually out of my price range, products that I already bought, etc...)
SOLUTION: Make FB a "Utility," like ATT and Verizon. (FB: Charge say $20/mo. to users for use, abolish the advertising and revenue from such, which eliminates all these issues about steering kids towards bad commodities). Let We the People KEEP our very important FIRST AMENDMENT! Regulate FB under the ORIGINAL Section 230 in 1996--which says the platform can be sued for deleting people/content, but NOT for any content they leave up.

They are for the government though because they can't track you, having an anonymous account is like having a burner phone. Misinformation isn't the problem at all, it's Facebook censoring and favoring certainty political agendas and being in bed with one political party is a HUGE problem, way more than stating a non-fact lol. We do not need more government regulation, we just need social media websites to follow constitutional laws, not create more laws. they should just follow the laws we already have, and we should remove section 230. Maybe we should boycott all ads on these media platforms. If we like a product etc.. that is posted in advertising, go to that website directly (after we log out). I know everyone needs to make a living, but this is the only way to stop this abuse.

Frances Haugen sounds like controlled opposition. Free speech, but don't talk about the bad things in life! If you truly believe in free speech, then you allow the good and the bad, both the pros and the cons about life. This is not to say cracking down on bullying is a bad thing, but to what she is saying, her type of 'free speech' where you can only show the home and gardens niceties of one's life would make it impossible to talk about the problems she speaks about with bullying and mental/physical problems in any real or productive manner. That is what we already see today when you get fact checked on posts regarding alternative views around COVID and the vaccine, where you can't talk about the alternatives because it is deemed harmful. Well, what if information on bullying or anorexia was treated in such a manner, or flat out told that you can't post about these things because they are deemed unhealthy conversations not allowed on FB? On top of that, the politics of the Democrats is decidedly authoritarian, so that they don't like opinions that are contrary to theirs, and thus consider opposing views as 'fanning the flames', or even disagreements of policies as akin to 'bullying'. This leads to a terrible precedence where if you have a view that is different from the majority party in power (at the moment Democrats), then you can be labeled in incendiary terms as being bullies, trolls, and worse things.
As for the aspect of friends and family becoming at odds with each other, even to deciding to not talk to one another, part of that is because when people air their views on FB, they leave themselves open to the scrutiny of others. People have issues when it comes to looking past what they expect of friends and family. If one believes that because their family votes Democrat that it means that everyone is lock step in line with the DNC political party platform, they may be sorely mistaken. We can see that there are divisions in the DNC, just as there is, or has been a big tent in the GOP. Party politics can be very divisive, regardless if family and friends all are of one party or a mix of parties and political ideologies that aren't easily expressed or understood in the two party system we currently have in our politics in the US.
And yes, I do think the political quashing at FB is problematic. Having mostly moved to Minds for more serious conversations beyond the home and gardens of the 'nice' posts FB allows without fact checking and taking down because it's too controversial, I can say that being on a free speech platform is much more freeing and allows for better engagements. People already don't like FB because of issues of privacy and selling our information, and being somewhat a spy and psyop playground for various government agencies, not to mention the tweaking FB does personally. Also, the 'dangerous' content is highly subjective. Democrats push that white supremacy is the biggest issue out there, and for decades have tried to take down conservative media, so much so that conservative media either leaves, or is kicked off RUclips as a result of this witch hunt that associates conservatives with white supremacists. Yet Antifa, BLM, and other groups that are associated on the left often appear to get a pass, even when they are actively calling for violence and plotting illegal activities on FB, Twitter, and even sometimes on RUclips. The far left gets a pass on calling for drone attacks against conservatives, even implying genocide of holocaust horrific acts against conservatives. There have also been found actual terrorist groups on the left actively promoting their own rallies and planning their own terrorist plots on social media, and some of those groups still remain active regardless. Why? It appears they are shielded by the left, that they are the approved terrorists or strong arm of the left. And while there has been little crack down on the riots and events that led to taking over of city blocks for an 'autonomous zone', or burning down and looting businesses, as well as attack on a federal building, all these things seem to get a pass by the left, and the mainline social media like FB, Twitter, and RUclips seem to allow. It's also ironic hearing Democrats claim concern with the equity of race, etc. while also defending CRT, which has led to modern segregation in schools, shows how out of touch with reality they are.
Censorship often seems one sided, that it's all about weeding out conservatives that are being labeled as either far right or outright white supremacists in a time when political polemical rhetoric on the left is calling long time liberals that don't embrace neo-liberal, social democrat, or liberal progressive ideas and agenda 'far right'. When the far left can control the conversation and the narrative, that's just as bad, if not worse than anything the far right could do. After all, Stalin and Mao with their far left communist/socialist ideals led to the massacre of millions more people being killed than Hitler managed to do. Again, part of that was because liberals chose to be apologetic, rather than critical of the crimes against humanity because they were at odds with their narratives of then DNC trying to be the free speech party opposing the GOP's McCarthyism. Now, the left is doing things McCarthy could only dream of. And now you want us to trust the majority left political power to do the right thing and not use cracking down on FB as a way to increase their power and quash conservatives and others that don't fall in line with leftist ideologies and agendas? Sorry, but no. I don't trust this lefty government that wants to force people to take a vaccine or else lose your job, and destroy your life because of pandemic politics and power grab. The DNC is drunk on power and demands more. They are like FB in that regard, so how can anyone expect them to have a fair and balanced committee on this?
