Ms Haugen is a Harvard graduate and an outspoken and courageous woman. I'm a retired Medical Laboratory Technologist BS, certified MT ASCP. I joined Facebook on 3 separate occasions and I finally decided it was a steaming pile of excrement filled with boasters, bullies and fools. I use my phone only to converse with friend and family members. If RUclips is a social media site the it's the only one I'm a member of but it is not on my phone. Thank You Frances Haugen for your efforts to protect the world's 60% of Facebook users.

@Turtle Club When Facebook shut down I lost my immediate connection and communication with my classmates and can't communicate on whatever we need to do for a group project ._.) Here in the Philippines, Facebook is literally the cheapest communication we can afford. Our data packs are specifically for Facebook because we use it most. I can't video chat outside of Facebook because it's expensive for me. I don't have a laptop because it's expensive for me. Facebook shouldn't be shut down completely, it should be TONED down. And you should learn that not everyone may have the same situation as you.

We have seen this first hand! Cut our kids off from internet use and only 3 days in we are seeing an improvements in them. It’s amazing to actually see first hand how much social media really effects a person.
Or instead of just hiding them from the emotions and the world that they feel from it, TEACH THEM about their feelings and guide them through it. As adults theyre going to run into the exact same emotions of the internet and social media and will have no idea how to deal with it.

I deleted my Twitter account about a year ago...still use Facebook to communicate with family.
I did the same. Probably a year and half ago. So much hatred and negativity. Don't miss it one bit.
I came to this conclusion a while ago, I’m normally a very chill guy but the amount of time and effort spent arguing with strangers on the internet had reached and all time high for me I had to take a step back and ask myself is this using your time wisely.
I end up framing my comments in such a way that I don't leave much wiggle room for arguing. Another thing is I refuse to go back and forth with anyone that isn't respectful. You can tell who is trying to learn and understand and who isn't.
The best thing you can do is just simply stop using Facebook
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Share the video and raise awareness.

I quit Facebook cold turkey about 5 years ago. And I am a bit surprised that I didn't really miss it at all. I never got onto Instagram. My life and well-being is much better now.

Let me tell you something about whistleblowers, when they are on the cover of mainstream news and glorified on a prime time show, it’s call a staged hit. Look at her frown, pay attention to the programming. Real whistleblowers are shunned, paid off, or worse, killed. This woman is being glorified for the wrong reasons, even if she is right.

Exactly. This woman was probably mad that she couldn’t get a higher position to truly change Facebook the way she saw fit. At the end of the day tech companies want to keep the engagement and bring as many people to the platform, while remaining as profitable as possible.
Facebook is a reflection of human nature
The best thing you can do is just simply stop using Facebook. Nobody needs it. I can't even count the number of people I have seen over the past year devolve into posting non-stop, angry content. When you click on it enough, you get caught in a feedback loop of seeing nothing else except anger-inducing content. The only way to break the cycle is to simply get off and leave the platform for good. My life has genuinely improved since I stopped using it over the pandemic.
There you go! That is how a free market works! I don't need anyone to dictate what media I consume. Nope! I will die on that hill!

What you consume online is almost just like what you consume for food. YOU can choose what you consume and spend your time on. I personally deleted most of my socials and haven't felt more at peace 🙏
I didn't have to delete any of them, I simply don't use them, sometimes for years at a time. lol Some people are like alcoholics, though, and can't have a few sips and set it down and walk away until 3-5 years later when they have another lone cocktail.

@@mcfrisko834 I personally have a small family so having their phone numbers is enough to reach them. Maybe keeping your account but deleting the applications or logging off if one notices they're spending too much time or catching up on too much unhealthy bad news could work as well.

I deleted my profile in 2018. Had it for 4 years and got tired of everybody whining about everything. Nobody needs to know what is going on in my life everyday. As for making young people self conscious, it's doing a great job.

I had started suffering from an eating disorder, I became anorexic. I didn't know why, I couldn't figure out why I was obsessing over my eating and size. I was getting on fb, thinking I was up there for just 10 minutes at a time but I'd realize it'd be an hour. And I would be irritated my kids or anyone would try to interact with me when I was on it. I felt this anxiety all the time when I had fb. My anxiety levels have dropped tremendously since I did the permanent delete. My husband also deleted his. He has a smart watch that tracks his blood pressure and heart rate. His heart rate has literally dropped 20 beats per minutes since deleting his fb and he almost never got on fb so that is just mind blowing

The best thing I ever did was delete my Facebook and instagram accounts. I don’t spend time with my head buried in my phone anymore but just enjoying every moment of life.

Same here Facebook was real pop in high school for me and I just hated the toxic aura it had every time I would get on I deleted when I was 19 and just said yeah never again.

FB was only ever good for one thing..getting into contact with people from my past in which I had lost contact with and had absolutely no other way to find them. Besides that..it's useless.
I agree with you but will add one more thing: I find out about more local events and businesses through FB than any other platform including the local newspaper. Event planners don't have to pay FB to post an event, unlike posting an ad in the newspaper. I wish it wasn't true but it is. If you go out of your way to not make it that, you will see a wide range of different opinions and stories and media in your feed. You train the algorithms with your Likes and Dislikes and what groups you join. Just something to keep in mind. I didnt want an echo chamber, so in my timeline I see everything from Communists to Nazis, evangelicals to atheists and everything in between. -Both Republicans and Democrats, -anarchists, agorists, libertarians, etc, so it is possible, but takes a bit of effort. And for most people would probably be more challenging, bc who wants to see posts by people they disagree with? I do, so long as those people let me challenge them, in a constructive way. Where the widest range of opinion is allowed to be expressed is also where the most learning take place.

My profile options/data was often altered. I then discovered that Zuckerberg was over Facebook, that was it for me.
Every account has a pixel installed in it, basically artifical intelligence that learns your behavior. This pixel feeds your data to their system and throws you in a bubble where you are bombarded with the same information over and over again making you belive that the information you see is the only true information and we all know that in order to learn you need to see the other side of the story.
And they all do it. Including RUclips. We're all living in our own bubble. It's no wonder positions are getting more and more extreme and societies more and more polarized.
Thank you. I quit Facebook and Instagram. Instead, I devote time to volunteer work, bringing people into yoga and meditation, leading group practice. Our mental health is precious, please let us make it a priority. :)

Been off FB for a few years now. Get on from time to time to check in, but immediately regain that dizzy feeling of scrolling. I'm pretty much done with social media as a millennial. I'm too absorbed in real life, studying, adventure, and expanding my career to give a crap about maintaining a social media face anymore. The peace that has come along with this decision is expansive. Everyone should try it.

My response was why don't you just call me and we do it together rather you sitting at home watching me doing it? Life's way too short to spend time watching others have fun or just being angry.
Best thing I ever did was remove myself from all social media in back around 2013. I always am asked why I don’t have any social media. I always said I don’t need others to know what I’m doing and I don’t need to know what others are doing. Best move I ever did in life.

I haven’t had Facebook for nearly 10 years, or Instagram in nearly 5 years. I can say my mental health has been spared because of that decision. They are both incredibly toxic platforms and I don’t know how people are okay when they’re so active on them.
@@familylifetoo9541 truthfully I was too. I remember deactivating my Instagram & deleting the app and thinking I’d be back immediately the next day. And the next day I went to open it and it wasn’t there and I felt relieved. Like a weight had been lifted. I’ve never looked back.

I had two bad experiences with FB. The first was some man, during the protests called me a mixed breed something or other. We had an exchange and he posted my home address and phone number on several pages and groups that were, lets just say not inclusive of all people. It took several days (close to a week) with over 20 people complaining about it to have my personal information removed while these people were threatening to come to my house.
The second was a photographer that use to take pageant photos was arrested for child pornography. Well, I received a call from some officers asking if a photo on his page was of my daughter. It was. It was a photo where he was standing above her and you could see down the front of her dress. Again, she wasn't the only one. he also had undressed children on his page. These photos stayed on this mans page for weeks with 100s of us filing complaints repeatedly. We received canned messages saying that they had to prioritize complaints and that this was not a priority.
